When I get up in the morning and
Parkinson’s disease says stay in bed….
I listen to my spirit which says GET UP!!
The mind is the most powerful tool that
we have. If you can’t envision it in your
mind, it’s not going to happen.
How do you manage stress, which as we
all know only contributes to illness?
I had a very nervous childhood. My best
friend was my dad and he was fifty
years older than me. When I was 10,
he was 60 and battling cancer, and I’d
cry at the end of the driveway waiting
for him to come back from treatment.
When I was 15, I started weightlifting
after watching WWF and was inspired
by people like Hulk Hogan and Rocky.
I trained my body naturally and never
took a drug in my life. I created my body
with my mind. I’d close my eyes and
envision it and then get to work at it.
Stress is all in the mind. It starts in
the mind and it ends in the mind. But
unfortunately our bodies become a
product of the stress. Our muscles
tighten; our hearts race and we just
can’t get a good workout.
To combat stress I listen to my music
that I have been listening to since
I began working out at 15…ROCKY!
When I hear those trumpets, there’s a
part of me inside that comes alive! I
don’t know what that part is, but I know
it’s a good thing because it made me
the man I am today!
I believe that strength is
90% in the mind and
10% in the body.
How challenging is balance with
Parkinson’s? What works for you in
improving it?
Balance is a big thing when it comes to
Parkinson’s disease. It’s called postural
instability. When I walk my arms are
in front of me, and I appear extremely
stiff and I am also slightly bent
forward. The best exercise that I find
for balance is putting my back against
the wall while maintaining an erect
straight posture. This in return keeps
me straight and distributes my weight
equally throughout my entire body.
Also, walking is very good because it is
extremely natural and something that
all of us are built to do, and do a lot of!
