Tony Farrugia realized at the age of 18 he must have inherited his
grandfather’s natural physical strength when he lifted his first car.
Keeping the family tradition alive, he also practices the
family art of steel bending.
Q: Tony, how do you workout to build or
maintain your level of strength?
A: I’ve never trained at a gym or with
conventional equipment, although I
once tried and successfully overhead
lifted a 105kg dumbbell. I lift with brute
strength and little to no technique. I
first started training by lifting stones
like my grandfather used to do when
he was alive. He was abnormally strong
and well-known in Malta’s capital city
of Valletta back when they had stone
lifting competitions there. But I never had
specific training for lifting.
Q: What are some of the objects you have
lifted?
A: I’ve lifted hundreds of different types of
cars over the years. I’ve also lifted heavy
things like vans, stones, safes, skips, giant
tires, giant logs, pallets…and people! I
think one of my most impressive feats was
flipping a 885kg car over. I weigh 115kg.
I once lifted a small truck weighing over
3 tons total weight from the back end, so
over 300kg in the hand.
Q: Do you stick to a particular diet?
A: I like eating and drinking lots of milk!
I’ve never taken any supplements such
as whey protein or creatine. I’m very antidrug
and won’t even take supplements.
