west end of the grandstand.

Courtesy golf carts are available during 

the State Fair. They are free to ride and 

anyone can ride them. 

The carts are located at all gates and 

at random places around the fairgrounds 

as people need them.

SD Farmers Union Day 

Join us for Farmers Union Day at 

the South Dakota State Fair Saturday, 

Aug. 31. South Dakota Farmers 

Union (SDFU) will host events 

throughout the day celebrating the 

family farmers, ranchers, and rural 

communities from across the great 

state of South Dakota that they so 

proudly represent. 

The day will kick off at 10:30 a.m. 

on the NorthWestern Energy Freedom 

Stage with Insuring a Brighter 

Tomorrow Scholarship Presentation 

sponsored by Farmers Union Insurance 

Agency. Incredible high school 

seniors will be awarded scholarships 

totaling $25,000 to put toward their 

college education. Five individuals 

will then be presented their Rural 

Dakota Pride Award. These individuals 

have made a lasting impact on 

their community through their volunteer 

work. SDFU believes it’s these 

volunteers that make a community 

strong. 

Highlighting the day of activities 

will be the annual Farmer’s Share 

Luncheon (limited number of meals 

available) located in the day sponsor 

tent near the NorthWestern 

Energy Freedom stage from 11:30 

a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In comparison 

to the retail price of the meal, $10, 

attendees will pay just $0.30 for a 

meal that showcases the farmer’s 

share on retail food dollars. 

From 1 to 2 p.m. on the North- 

Western Energy Freedom Stage, 

Farmers Union will host a panel on 

the Future of Hemp in South Dakota. 

At 2 p.m. is the Farm Safety FFA 

Quiz Bowl Championship; four FFA 

Quiz Bowl teams will compete for 

the championship title. It’s designed 

as a fun way to teach high school 

students about safety on the farm or 

ranch. 

Farmers Union will also be displaying 

their new interactive Farm 

Safety Trailer on Third Street in front 

of the Dakotaland Museum. The 

trailer will give visitors the opportunity 

to learn farm safety with power 

take offs, grain bins, and down power 

lines. There will be ATV simulator 

demonstrations three times a day at 

11 a.m. and 2 and 4 p.m.

DPS Share the 

Road Day 

The South Dakota Department 

of Public Safety is back for a fourth 

consecutive year in the Day Sponsor 

Tent on Sunday, Sept. 1. This 

year’s theme is motorcycle safety - 

whether you are on the highway or 

on the street near your home, be a 

safe motorcycle driver. Slow down, 

watch for others, and wear the proper 

safety equipment. Be ready to 

“share the road” with others. Also 

in the tent will be educational programs, 

games, the chance to renew 

your driver’s license (two address 

documents required) and of course, 

Tommy the Turtle and the ever popular 

Highway Patrol police dogs. 

Staff will also be giving away free 

DPS hats and visors! The goal of 

DPS Day is to highlight all the ways 

the department works to keep the 

public safe. Stop by and see the 

staff of the Department of Public

for South Dakota State Fair 

The South Dakota State Fair 

invites classic car and antique 

tractor enthusiasts to take part in 

the Classic Car Show and Antique 

Tractor Show sponsored by Stan’s 

Inc. on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, 

Sept. 1, during the State Fair. 

Classic Car Show 

The Classic Car Show on Saturday, 

Aug. 31, is a chance 

to look at classic cars 25 years or 

older. Sherwin Linton will host the 

show from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the 

AARP Centennial Stage. 

Awards will begin at 4 p.m. with 

trophies awarded to first through

The Antique Tractor Show sponsored 

by Stan’s Inc. on Sunday, 

Sept. 1 is a display of antique tractors 

from around South Dakota. The 

show is open to all antique tractors. 

Sherwin Linton will host the show

Centennial Stage.

diapers on his family’s ranch, started 

training ponies at the age of 10, and 

trained his first horse at the age of 13. 

Since then, he has become one of 

the top horse trainers and clinicians 

in South Dakota and throughout the 

Midwest. 

Over the past few years, Rodney 

has instructed many horsemanship 

clinics and demonstrations for all ages 

and riding levels. His unique training 

style and sense of humor have made 

him a sought after horsemanship clinician 

throughout the United States 

and Canada. 

He is the first and only 5-time 

champion of the Crosswinds Ranch 

Colt Training Challenge that is held 

at Michigan State University every 

Spring, and has won multiple Ranch 

Horse Colt Futurity competitions. 

He has become known for creating 

a relationship with his horses to 

produce extremely supple, well-mannered, 

and responsive horses that are 

capable of many disciplines.

2 Rare Pioneer tractors to be displayed 

Two rare Pioneer tractors will be 

displayed at the Antique Machinery 

Exhibit at the South Dakota State Fair. 

Making its first appearance is a 1919 

Pioneer Special. 

Of the three known to exist in the United 

States, this is the only one that still runs. 

It is exhibited by Irv and Mark King of 

Artesian.

Making its third appearance at the 

State Fair is a monster 30-60 Pioneer 

Tractor. 

It is one of approximately 10 existing 

in the United States. It was bought new 

by Edgar and Harry Knox of Alpena, at 

the State Fair in 1910.

Leader and front man of the

Boys of Summer celebrate the history of the Red Wilk Construction Bull Bash

Since 2005, the late August 

stop on the Tuff Hedeman 

Bull Riding Tour has launched and 

funded many professional bull riding 

careers. Huron, South Dakota has 

been the site of grand comebacks, 

tragic and heartbreaking career 

endings, and in some years it has 

set the pace for the next season, positioning 

the bull rider to win a World 

title. 

In front of a boisterous standing 

room only crowd, year after year the 

azure blue colored sky seems to 

stand still for a breathtaking sunset 

as Tuff Hedeman and the boys enter 

through the center gate. 

There is no doubt that with 14 

years of pro bull riding on the record 

in Huron, hundreds of thousands of 

dollars in cash has been awarded. 

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 

1,000 times the chute gates have 

opened for bucking bulls of the year, 

veteran and rookie cowboy athletes 

alike. 

With a passion for the South 

Dakota State Fair, Red Wilk decided 

in 2001 to get the ball rolling on 

bringing stand-alone bull riding to 

the fairgoers. Since 1986, Red Wilk 

Construction has been a corporate 

partner of the South Dakota State 

Fair. In 2001, the Fair discontinued 

the PRCA rodeo held annually, and 

Red decided to take on the task of 

bringing professional level bull riding 

to the Grandstands. 

“The South Dakota State Fair 

means a great deal to Red, and he 

and our family are very happy to be 

a part of the fair,” said Jenny Wilk. 

The Bull Bash has grown over 

the years from a few hundred fans 

attending to over 5,000 people that 

come faithfully on Wednesday and 

Thursday night to watch the Tuff 

Hedeman Bull Riding Tour. 

During the first two years (2001- 

2002) it was first produced by a 

company in Utah. For the following 

15 years, CBR produced the event 

with Tuff Hedeman commanding the 

chutes for CBR. In 2017 Tuff Hedeman 

Bull Riding evolved and took 

the reins. 

“I knew there was a need for it 

and I knew the people would love it,” 

said Wilk. 

From the first year until 2012 the 

annual two-day Red Wilk Construction 

Bull Bash consisted of two days, 

with two rounds each day. In 2012 

the format changed to the threeround 

sudden death format on day 

two which guarantees bull riders 

prize money in each round if they 

ride their bull. The riders earn additional 

money for each ride, and the 

event culminates in a sudden-death 

final round of four riders with a winner 

take all scenario. 

Red Wilk first produced bull riding 

at the Fair in 2001, but the traditional 

Red Wilk Construction Bull 

Bash began its run in 2005 with Tuff 

Hedeman in front of the chutes. Wilk 

began the centerpiece of the event, 

the American Hero Award in 2003. 

Being a Vietnam Veteran himself, 

he knows the importance of honoring 

Veterans for the sacrifices they 

have made for their country. Over 

the years, Red has honored 100 

plus Veterans from South Dakota. 

“The sacrifice these men make 

for our country is how we are able 

to do what we do today, right here in 

this very arena, and it is our honor to 

stand down and be part of this great

people of Huron, it is has reached 

legendary status… to bull riders, 

stock contractors and most importantly, 

the fans.

the history of the Red Wilk 

Construction Bull Bash and their 

path to a piece of South Dakota and 

bull riding history: 

• 2018 — Tristan Mize, Bryan, 

Texas: Debuting at his first Tuff 

Hedeman Bull Riding Tour, 21-yearold 

Tristan Mize found his way to 

the winners circle to accept the custom 

created trophy belt and check 

from Tuff Hedeman and Red Wilk 

for the average title on one ride. His 

88 point domination of Jeff Harris’ 

bull rider favorite, 277 Dirty Little 

Secret eventually won him the title 

He bucked off 21Z Gray Cloud (Burruss) 

in the Shoot-Out. 

• 2017 — Koby Radley, Montpelier, 

La.: NFR qualifier, CBR Year- 

End Horizon Champion, IFYR World 

Champion. After forty-one outs and 

nine qualified rides, it was the Louisiana 

cowboy who was the only 

bull rider to cover two during the 3 

round event. Radley was 84.5 on 

JC Knapp’s Uptown Funk first then 

89 points on L33 Tamale (Harris) in 

the semifinal round to eventually be 

declared the average champion and 

winner in 2017. 

• 2016 — Taryl Smith, Litchville, 

N.D.: NFR qualifier who rode 3 for 

the win including Shoot Out Round 

match-up J908 Outside the Box (J. 

Jaynes) for 92 points. He advanced 

from 1 to 2 on Commanche Moon 

(7Rocking X) followed by 89 points 

on Flab Slab (Jaynes) in the second. 

• 2015 — Sage Kimzey, Strong 

City, Okla.: Zero rides in the Shoot 

Out round resulted in the event average 

title for 5-time PRCA World 

Champion, CBR World Champ, and 

5-time NFR qualifier Sage Kimzey 

who rode JC Knapp’s salty bull … 

93Pepper in the second round for 

90 points and the win. 

• 2014 — Corey Bailey, Paris, 

Tenn.: Corey Bailey carries the average 

title from 2014 with 92 points 

aboard Evil Kneivel (JQH) but zero 

rides scores during the Shoot Out 

thus pushed the prize purse to the 

following event. Corey would launch 

a good career from Huron and become 

the 2018 IPRA World Champion 

Bull Rider. 

• 2013 — Aaron Pass, Dallas, 

Texas: NFR qualifier Aaron Pass 

won the Shoot out and event title 

with a 90.5 on 117C Booger Red. 

He advanced with 88.5 on 265 Myspace. 

• 2012 — Ardie Maier, Timber 

Lake: NFR qualifier, member of the 

$1,000,000 earnings club, and the 

oldest of the trio of bull riding Maier 

brothers, Maier was the comeback 

kid in 2012 after ending 2011 CBR 

season in the hospital at the yearend 

finals. Maier was 89 points in 

the Shoot Out on Chin Music (Dakota). 

He advanced on 89.5 points 

aboard Buffalo Hump (Talbert) and 

91 on Sandy Bob (Talbert).The only 

native South Dakota bull rider to 

ever win the Huron Bull Bash title, 

Maier is a beloved member of this 

community. 

• 2011 — Clayton Foltyn, Winnie, 

Texas: CBR World Champion and 

NFR Qualifier. Foltyn was one of 2 

to cover both bulls for 172 points. 

He earned the title with a pair of 86’s 

on 732 Notorious (McGuire Cattle) 

in the long round and 564 Big Stuff 

(Berger) in the short go. 

• 2010 — Scottie Knapp, Edgewood, 

N.M.: NFR Qualifier. The 

fans remember Kenny Westrope 

who was as 91.5 on Bucking Bull of 

the Year Double Scoop (B. Cooper 

Bucking Bulls) in the final round, but 

it was Knapp that won the average 

with two rides. 87.5 on CyberSpace 

(B. Cooper) and 91 points on 92 

Walk the Line (Berger). 

• 2009 — Cling Craig, Mena, Ark.: 

An NFR qualifier who won both 

rounds with a 90 on Secret Mind 

(Shippy) in the long round and Walk 

the Line (Berger) 91.5 in the short 

round. “He did his job and made it 

look easy, it was the essence of a 

good bull rider, the win was a result 

of his emphasis on the mental 

game,” said TV broadcaster and 

8-time World Champion Don Gay. 

• 2008 — Steve Woolsey, Payson, 

Utah: NFR qualifier who earned the 

title with 89.5 points on 23 Like Mike 

in the Championship Round. Woolsey 

advanced on Hugh with 86.50 

points in the long round. 

• 2007 — Bonner Bolton, Odessa, 

Texas: CBR World Champion 

and PBR premier tier rider. The current 

fashion model Bonner Bolton 

won the event in 2007 on PRCA 

Bucking Bull of the Year, HO3 Biloxi 

Blues when he brought the crowd to 

their feet with 91.5 points. He rode 

47 Scorpion for 86 pts in the long 

round. Bonner later was a contestant 

on Dancing With the Stars on 

ABC. 

• 2006 — Jay Dunford, Menoken, 

N.D.: After two days, 102 outs and 

30 qualified rides, Jay Dunford was 

declared the winner with 173 points, 

narrowly edging out Bonner Bolton. 

He was 88 points on 007 Bond 

James Bond (Berger) and 85 points 

on 903 Blue Chip (Berger) to win 

the first round.

started in 2013 by Red Wilk. Being a 

Vietnam Veteran himself, he knows

Pulling Association (OTTPA) was 

formed in 1982. OTTPA is the premier

of pulling in over 50 cities from Texas 

to South Dakota. 

The OTTPA has 14 classes and 

250 competing vehicles. 

The Outlaw Truck and Tractor 

Pulling Association (OTTPA) in 2016

will celebrate the crowning of 

a new Miss South Dakota State Fair 

at the State Fairgrounds in Huron. 

The pageant, a preliminary to the 

Miss South Dakota program is open 

to young women ages 17 to 24. 

In addition, a teen competition 

will also be held during the pageant. 

Miss South Dakota Outstanding 

Teen is open to young ladies between 

13 and 17 years old. 

Two titles are open for Miss — 

Miss State Fair and Miss Wheel Jam 

and two titles are open for Teen — 

Miss State Fair Outstanding Teen 

and Miss Wheel Jam Outstanding 

Teen. 

The Current Miss State Fair and 

Miss State Fair Outstanding Teen 

will reign over the fair with crown 

and sash until Monday, Sept. 3. 

The new title holders will be “in 

waiting” wearing only their sash and 

will regin during the 2019 South Dakota 

State Fair. 

Contestants will arrive on Friday 

by 6 p.m. Interviews will be held on 

Saturday morning. Host homes will 

be provided to contestants if needed.

Pegie Douglas, S.D. Country 

Music Hall of Fame CD of the 

Year Award winner, will showcase 

some of the Badger Clark writings 

that she has put to music (Badger 

Clark will be inducted posthumously 

in 2019 as well). 

For her biography, Douglas writes, 

“My parents were from the prairie 

near Faith, South Dakota. They 

moved to North Carolina where I 

was raised. Now I live in South Dakota 

full time and am a retired special 

education teacher.” 

Douglas said she discovered 

Badger Clark, South Dakotaʼs first 

poet laureate, and fell in love with 

his poetry. 

She created a musical/educational 

program called, “The Life and Music 

of Badger Clark,” and founded 

the band, “The Badger Sett Band.” 

They perform at Custer State 

Park and around the Black Hills, and 

have released 2 CDs. 

She composed music for 15 of 

his poems, and performs at Cowboy 

Poetry Gatherings, libraries and 

museums in South Dakota, North 

Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, New 

Mexico, Montana and Wyoming. 

She is a scholar with the S.D. Humanities 

Council Speakers Bureau, 

and also performs bluegrass, country 

and original music.

venue. By day, the Midway Roadhouse 

serves as an area for fairgoers

fairgoers can enjoy everything from 

acoustic musicians to jugglers. By 

night, it transforms into an outdoor 

concert area, providing a fun beer

it to Hollywood for the Emmy 

nominated competition show, American 

Idol, she has won numerous 

singing competitions including Dakota 

Star.

Deach Koch is a singer-songwriter 

who hails from the big 

city of Gann Valley, South Dakota. 

Deach has played at numerous 

venues throughout South Dakota, 

entertaining the crowd with his

Brandon Jones is a fun, exciting 

entertainer with powerful 

vocals and great group of musicians 

backing him. As a group they like to 

have fun bouncing around different 

genres of music, while still making 

everything seem a little country. 

Predominately a country/rock cover 

band with their own originals sprinkled 

in, they love to shock you with 

crazy covers you wouldn’t expect 

from a big bearded guy.

2011 brought change to this 

once young and strictly cover 

band musician. A stint of hard living 

and drinking got Weston kicked out 

of his own cover band. Determined 

to rise above and find purpose to 

music, and with a lot of help from his 

then girlfriend, now wife Jill, Weston 

has become a staple in South Dakota 

Country music. 

Sobriety, hard work, small doses 

of humor and a little faith have taken 

him a long way.

time. It all started in Wilmot, SD, 

where Greg was raised on the family 

farm. While in his teens, Greg 

became determined to make singing 

his career and spent the next 

eight years competing in numerous 

talent contests throughout the Midwest. 

His first break came in 2001, 

when Greg performed in Branson, 

Missouri, and was offered a permanent 

spot on the Doug Gabriel 

Show. Greg moved to Branson and 

performed there for 10 months while 

he recorded his debut album “I’m the 

New Man.” Through a mutual friend, 

Greg was introduced to Minnesota 

native Dennis Morgan, who now resides 

in Nashville, Tennessee. Morgan, 

a member of the Country Music 

Hall of Fame, has written more than 

20 number one hits for artists like 

Faith Hill, Reba, Ronnie Milsap, Rod 

Stewart and many others. Believing 

in Greg’s traditional, yet, unique vocals, 

the two worked together to record 

Greg’s second album, “I Owe 

You One.” 

One of Greg’s favorite places to 

play at is the South Dakota State 

Fair. Over the years, he has enjoyed 

singing on the 4-H stage, performing 

with Sherwin Linton and the 

Cotton Kings, the Freedom Stage 

and even opening for Chely Wright 

at the Grandstand. Greg loves the 

State Fair and has not missed one 

since he was 5 years old.
