RED CROSS TO
THE RESCUE
Grandfather runs over
wife and grandchild
by Simon Russell
A 21 month old child is in
hospital in a “very serious
condition” after being run
over by her grandfather’s
car in what appears to be
an unlucky accident.
The incident happened in
Cuenca and the girl’s grandmother
was also struck by
the vehicle and has suffered
several injuries. She was
holding the toddler in her
arms in the courtyard of
their house when it appeared
that the car lurched forward
after being started by the
grandfather. Both victims
were transferred to the Albacete
General Hospital the
woman by ambulance while
the girl’s injuries meant that
a helicopter was used.
Did the earth
move for you?
A Red Cross patrol boat and
helicopter saved the lives
of two people who had fallen
into the sea at a remote
part of the Denia coastline
last week.
The pair were part of a
group of youngsters who were
walking at Cova Talla when
they were dragged into the
water by a freak wave. They
managed to cling to some
rocks but were unable to get to
The overturned car at the scene
A man involved in a spectacular crash
in Denia town centre on Sunday evening
was found to be three times over the legal
alcohol limit, the authorities have
confirmed.
He was going at high speed at the entry to
Plaza de Jaume 1 near the Casa de la Cultura
when the vehicle flipped and hit four other
parked cars, badly damaging them all.
shore and others in the group
contacted the authorities.
Despite the rough sea conditions
- the red flag had been
flying on many Denia beaches
- an inflatable patrol boat
and two lifeguards quickly
reached the scene. A second
vessel soon arrived as well as
the helicopter.
SIXTEEN children have
developed ‘werewolf
syndrome’ after taking
contaminated medicine
in Spain.
The youngsters have
hypertrichosis - hair
growth throughout their
bodies - after taking a formula
tainted with minoxidil,
an alopecia remedy.
The Agency for Medicines
and Health Products
ordered that several
batches of omeprazole
from Farma-Química
Sur SL, a Malaga-based
pharmaceuticals company,
be taken out of circulation
on July 11th.
jumped in the water and managed
to get the victims to the
relative safety of a nearby
cave. A third guard then took
the land route and guided
them to safe ground.
One man was treated for
abrasions at the local health
centre but his condition is not
serious. The rescuers were
praised for their bravery in
the dangerous conditions.
Triple trouble for
smashed driver
Despite it being 9pm with plenty of people
still around, fortunately the cars were the only
victims in the smash.
The driver was shown to have a blood alcohol
level of 82 mg/litre against a legal limit of
25 mg/litre - 3.3 times the limit.
AN earthquake struck the
Marina Alta at around 10 in
the evening last Wednesday
night (21 August).
The quake was felt by
many people in Javea, Teulada,
Denia, Benitatxell and
Pedreguer, prompting a number
of calls to the authorities.
While there were fears that
the rumbling could have been
anything from a gas explosion
to a car crash, there have been
no reports of any damage to
property or injuries to people.
The Geographic Institute
later confirmed that the earthquake
measured 2.8 on the
Richter Scale and had its epicentre
in Poble Nou de Benitatxell.
Tremors are relatively
common on the southern Costa
Blanca and Murcia - where
a number of people died in one
such incident in Lorca a few
years ago - but are rarer this
far north on the coast.
THE damage human activity
is doing to our seas,
not just here in Spain of
course but globally, is well
documented.
However Australia’s Great
Barrier Reef may be getting
help from an unusual
source – a floating island of
rock. The “raft” made up of
millions of pumice stones
has been spotted in the Pacific
Ocean and measures
about 150 square kilometres
(roughly the size of Birmingham).
Pumice may be familiar to
people as the rough stones
Floating rocks to
replenish reefs
by Simon Russell
sometimes found in bathrooms
that people use to
smooth off skin or remove
stains.
It is actually made up of
volcanic dust mixed with water
which then hardens and
often floats.
This enormous field of the
stuff is believed to have come
from an underwater volcano
and is due to end up off the
coast of Australia and, with
luck, eventually sink and
help replenish the vanishing
Great Barrier Reef.
