The summer atmosphere is 

fantastic and really pleasing to 

the Costa Blanca is busy 

with the holiday season. 

Hopefully we can get 

through this year’s summer 

with some enjoyable times. 

However, the excitement of 

the holidays are here with 

people enjoying everything 

that Spain offers. 

However, not all are welcoming 

the heat. Quite a few people are suffering 

the high temperatures and humidity. 

Also, beware of the “downsides”; yes too 

much sun, not enough drinking water 

and too much alcohol, all can spoil your 

holiday. Although “al fresco” eating on 

the summer days and evenings can be 

quite relaxing and enjoyable. 

For those born from August 1st to 

August 22nd, they are members of the 

Leo zodiac signs. As one of the zodiac’s 

most attention-seeking signs, a Leo can 

most likely be identified as a most natural 

“star”. People born from August 23rd to

to have to change around the home.

must choose. Either she takes over

How hot weather affect

Extreme weather can wreak havoc on 

your health — sunburn in the summer 

and flu in the winter, for instance. Hot 

and cold weather also can worsen the 

wearability of contact lenses, 

leading to discomfort or 

even infections. 

You may even 

have wondered

advice to ensure 

the weather doesn’t 

rain on your parade as a 

contact lens wearer. 

Hot weather / heat 

Since we tend to spend more time outdoors in 

warmer months, it’s vital to make sure you’re 

not exposing your eyes to harmful UV rays. 

Therefore, you might consider wearing contact 

lenses with UV protection, particularly during 

the summer. 

In addition, you should always wear 

polarized sunglasses when you’re outside, 

regardless of whether the thermometer shows 

90 degrees or 9 degrees. 

To avoid the sting of sweat in your eyes, 

consider wearing an absorbent headband or 

frequently wiping your brow with a towel. 

Your eyes and your contact lenses will thank 

you for it. 

Don’t fear intense heat 

It’s a myth that contact 

lenses will melt in your 

eyes if the summertime 

heat is bearing down 

on you or if you’re 

standing over a 

barbecue grill. 

Plenty of contact

goggles before hitting the water. 

Care for your contacts 

To promote eye health whether it’s sunny, 

cloudy, rainy or snowy, properly clean and 

store your contact lenses. 

How do you do this? Follow the 

manufacturer’s recommended schedule for 

changing your contacts (daily, monthly and 

so forth). 

Look into daily disposables 

One of the best ways to guard against eye 

issues regardless of the weather is to inquire 

about a prescription for daily disposable 

contact lenses (if you’re not already using 

them). 

A fresh, clean pair of daily contacts can 

reduce the likelihood of eye irritation or 

infection. 

Give your eyes a rest 

To minimize weather-related problems, take 

a break from contacts — a few hours before 

bedtime, for example — and wear your 

glasses instead. 

Also, be sure to get enough sleep; this can 

ease eye dryness and fatigue. 

Perhaps most importantly, don’t wear your 

contacts while you’re sleeping, since this 

can increase the risk of developing an eye 

infection. 

If you have any doubts, contact your eye care 

provider or optometrist.

WHY DROWN NOT BY DROWNING 

BUT BY IGNORANCE 

It is always sad to read of deaths by drowning. 

Such tragedies are common but many die 

not through drowning but through lack of 

knowledge. 

Even poor swimmers can stay afloat for days 

so why do some perish within a few minutes 

of getting into difficulty? Many will panic on 

realising they have overstretched themselves 

or are too far from the shoreline. They quickly 

become exhausted and nature takes its course. 

Water education, including swimming lessons, 

should be an as natural part of a youngster’s 

upbringing as is road safety. The first priority 

is to know one’s limitations. If you want to 

test yourself swim along the shoreline, not 

away from it. Be aware that undercurrents are 

fast-moving underwater eddies. It is possible 

to escape them if you hold your nerve. An 

undercurrent will tug at your legs; by using the 

backstroke you will bring them to the surface. 

It is difficult to see a person’s head from a 

boat’s deck. Take with you a brightly coloured 

flotation aid or hat. Even if you are unconscious, 

you will be spotted more easily. 

When in trouble our instinct is to swim to the 

nearest shoreline or riverbank. It is needlessly 

exhausting if to reach it you need to swim 

against a current or tide. The currents will 

usually deposit you on or near the banks further 

downstream. All you need to do is make sure 

you stay on the surface and go with the flow. 

Flipping over onto your back is almost as good 

as wearing water wings. 

Swimmers, especially those in trouble, 

needlessly struggle to keep their heads clear of 

the water. It doesn’t matter if your face is in the 

water for 55 seconds every minute: you need 

only 5 seconds to replenish your essential air 

supply. Conserve your strength and consider 

your options. Constantly practise drills on how 

to react to difficult situations. 

Remember freshwater is less buoyant than 

saltwater; more effort is needed to stay afloat 

in reservoirs, rivers and lakes. Cold is a killer: 

Lakes can look inviting, especially on a hot day. 

A little way out or just beneath the surface it is 

as bitterly cold as it is in mid-winter when you 

wouldn’t dream of going for a swim. Heat loss 

impairs muscle movement and induces heart 

attacks, which is why people drown in placid 

lakes. 

Familiarise yourself with the location before 

you do anything foolish. If your legs become 

entangled in underwater weeds you can usually 

free yourself by propelling yourself downstream 

using your arms. 

You wouldn’t run around a road wearing a 

blindfold; why leap or dive into the water when 

you cannot see what lies below the surface? 

Every year people die or are crippled by 

plunging into underwater hazards. 

Check the water’s banks and walls and avoid 

places where you cannot clamber out? Never 

swim without an exit strategy. If you are a 

parent teach your children by example so that 

water safety becomes as natural to them as does 

road safety. SAVE LIVES BY SHARING THIS

Car Scrambling at age 8 

DAVID MOORHOUSE. 

On the slope of a hillock standing near 

a school-buildings a crowd of us 

gathers to participate in car-scramble 

racing. 

It is the season of Monsoon and the muddy 

race-track is challenging, to say the least.... 

perilously narrow, sharp bends this way 

and that, steep gradients, stomach-churning 

obstacles.... and no rules, no umpire to ensure 

that the races are fair or equal. 

This is a Car Scramble Festival “Himalayastyle”.... 

each of us participants is the proud 

owner of a “Dinky” toy car that will be 

propelled around the tortuous course by 

sheer strength of hand, agility of limbs and 

body, and aggressive determination.... the 

Scramble can truthfully be described as an 

“each for himself” contest! 

By the time the Scramble ends no car 

remains unscathed.... all are scratched,

The Pink Lions of Modena 

They really do catch the eye as one walks 

round the outside of the Romanesque 

Duomo of Modena (construction begun 

during the 11th. century) and its famous 

(leaning) Torre Ghirlandina. At one point along 

a side-wall there is a rather small entrance with 

a shallow roof over it, the roof being held up by 

pillars; at the foot of two of the pillars sit two 

stone lions, each one with front paws stretched 

out protectively round a delicately-carved, 

little lamb. 

Both lions and lambs are carved from pink 

stone.... as an artist I am struck each time I/we 

visit Modena by their colouring! 

There is something very special about that 

“pink”; delicate, yet strong, vulnerable, yet 

enduring, weather-beaten, yet eye-catching.... 

an unforgettable “Magic” Travel Moment! 

By the way, there is a nearby Galleria with 

restaurants and bars where the weary traveller 

can rest and relax, absorbing the atmosphere as 

well as the ongoing creativity of Modena. 

On one occasion, we visited an Open Market 

(close by the Piazza del Duomo) to buy 

samples of Modena’s world-famous Balsamic 

Vinegar.... I love its taste to this day!

August 1, 1838 - Slavery was 

abolished in Jamaica. It had 

been introduced by Spanish 

settlers 300 years earlier in 

1509. 

August 1, 1944 - Anne Frank 

penned her last entry into 

her diary. Keep on trying to

1955) was born in Lochfield, 

Scotland. By accident,

August 7, 1990 - Just five 

days after the Iraqi invasion 

of Kuwait, President George 

Bush ordered Desert Shield, 

a massive military buildup 

to prevent further Iraqi 

advances. 

August 13, 1961 - The Berlin 

Wall came into existence 

after the East German 

government closed the 

border between east and 

west sectors of Berlin with 

barbed wire to discourage 

emigration to the West. The 

barbed wire was replaced 

by a 12 foot-high concrete 

wall eventually extending 

103 miles (166 km) around 

the perimeter of West Berlin. 

The wall included electrified 

fences, fortifications, and 

guard posts. It became 

a notorious symbol of 

the Cold War. Presidents 

Kennedyand Reagan made

T.E. Lawrence ‘of Arabia’ 

(1888-1935) was born in 

Tremadoc, North Wales. He 

led an Arab revolt against 

the Turks during World War 

I and served as a spy for 

the British. He was killed 

in a motorcycle accident at 

Dorset, England, on May 19, 

1935. 

August 17, 1998- Bill Clinton 

became the first sitting 

President to give testimony 

before a grand jury in which 

he, the President, was the 

focus of the investigation. 

This resulted from a 

sweeping investigation of the 

President by Independent 

Counsel Ken Starr as well as 

a private lawsuit concerning 

alleged sexual harassment 

by Clinton before he became 

President. In the evening, 

President Clinton appeared 

on national television and 

gave a speech admitting he 

had engaged in an improper 

relationship with former 

White House intern Monica 

Lewinsky. The admission

August 26, 1883 - One of the 

most catastrophic volcanic 

eruptions in recorded history 

occurred on the Indonesian 

island of Krakatoa. 

Explosions were heard 2,000 

miles away. Tidal waves 120 

ft. high killed 36,000 persons 

on nearby islands, while five 

cubic miles of earth were 

blasted into the air up to a 

height of 50 miles. 

August 31, 1997 - Britain’s 

Princess Diana died at age 36 

from massive internal injuries 

suffered in a high-speed car 

crash, reportedly after being 

pursued by photographers. 

The crash occurred shortly 

after midnight in Paris inside 

a tunnel along the Seine 

River at the Pont de l’Alma 

bridge, less than a half mile

I 

have to admit that I have not only 

reached, but outlived my sell by date, 

you know the Biblical estimation of a 

human life on earth? I did read that when 

the actuaries calculated the age for 

checking out for purposes of 

the old age state pension 

in Britain, it was sixtyseven 

for men, (and a 

couple more for the 

odd woman who 

worked), only two 

years on from 

retiring. We all 

know that’s not 

an average these 

days. If they are 

still around, they 

would be astounded 

at so many ninety 

plus still receiving 

monthly payments. 

I’ve lived in nine different 

countries, (yes I know I said 

it was eight a few months ago, 

but I counted again using more fingers), 

visited a further forty-one – not counting 

airport transfers – and while it’s not as many 

as a lot of people, at my advanced age it’s 

very easy to become confused. 

So, when I retired, I got bored after about 

ten minutes. I’d loved my job and leaving 

Africa it made sense to sell my company to 

start a new phase of our lives in Spain. Not 

speaking Spanish and my advanced years 

made it impactable to start up again. I’d 

been a scriptwriter for radio and television 

and it was a natural progressive step into 

directing and then producing a wide range 

of programmes from dramas, to 

adverts, educational series, 

promotional and .. I could 

go on and on. 

My clients ranged 

from international 

banking chains, 

to national 

supermarkets, 

charities, local 

and national 

government 

and… I could 

go on more here, 

but I’ll spare you. 

Have you 

experienced the 

embarrassment of 

chatting to friends when 

you suddenly remember, 

for example, the name of the film 

where Marilyn Monroe stood over the 

hot air grating (at least I hope it was at least 

warm) and shout it out? Everyone stares 

at you. Uh, sorry, wrong conversation, a 

different group of friends, another occasion. 

That’s why you see wrinklies like me on the 

mobile phone at dinner. We’re not checking 

our emails or messages, but filling in the 

gaps in our memories. At the same time, the

Marilyn Monroe?” 

When I first became a lady of leisure (I 

won’t mention here the cooking, cleaning, 

shopping, washing, ironing, scrubbing 

etc) I decided that I had better get as many 

memories down on paper as quickly as 

possible before I forgot who I was, where I 

had lived and what I had done. 

I made copious notes, unearthed a few 

letters home, checked out some of the videos 

I’d brought with me and sat down to write. 

It took three books, one a personal record 

and two about my scribbling career. I’m so 

glad I did because they have been a useful 

‘go to’ for these articles. I seldom talk about 

experiences in social circles, so many are just 

not believable. 

There are lots of people with amazing 

stories to tell, and I always urge people to 

write them down. They are part of living 

history and so many wonderful events will 

be lost for ever. 

Our stories are just as important as those 

of the celebrity culture. When I was filming 

in Kimberley for the library services, they 

proudly showed us how they were recording 

oral history from the San (Bushman). We 

met elderly folk who could neither read 

nor write, but could hunt an animal for 

days, survive in the most arid of regions 

and practice customs unknown to us. They 

told of the persecution from other African 

tribes, how they were not free to live as they 

wished and how modern life was destroying 

their world. It was a humbling experience 

and one I will never forget. It brought 

home to me that my western education and 

experience would serve me little if I was left 

to survive in the wilderness. Yet these gentle 

people have more wisdom and harmony 

with nature than I can only dream of.

THE PRESENCE OF GOD 

THAT WE SEE 

I searched for God where I thought I would find, 

His spirit of love as a ghost, 

A presence beyond the borders of man, 

Yet a friend who was closer than most. 

For Christmas was coming, the old would be new, 

When darkness gives way to the dawn,

In a church, in a garden of rest.

The Fiesta is part of the Spanish way of 

life and most fiestas have a religious 

or historical origin. In Costa Blanca 

surrounding areas the local patron saint 

and the Moors & Christians are usually 

the inspiration for a day off partying. The 

celebrations have singing and dancing and 

everybody has a jolly good time. 

Fiestas are financed in part by the Town 

Hall and in part by both local businesses and 

the local people themselves. 

Each town has a Fiesta to honour their 

patron saint. The fiesta in fact wends its way 

over 10 days of celebrations. Men and women 

wearing colourful traditional costumes 

parade through the streets, there are brass 

bands, open- dances. 

Spain is world renowned for its rich 

cultural history, so elegantly celebrated 

in the hundreds of different fiestas and 

festivals held around the country every year. 

Each fiesta is celebrated to the full by eager 

townsfolk and tourists alike, with gusto and 

fervours enthusiasm, and the Moors and 

Christians fiesta is one that is certainly a date 

to put in your diary. 

Many years ago, in fact over 600 years ago, 

Spain was a Muslim country and was known 

as Al-Andalus, largely inhabited and ruled by 

the Moors who were North African in Origin. 

The religious difference of the Moorish 

Muslims, in stark contrast the majority of 

Christian kingdoms throughout ancient 

Europe led to a centuries of long wars, battles 

and struggles for ideology and for land. 

A long battle was aged against the Muslim 

rulers, led by the combined military might of 

Aragon and Castile, who sought to capture 

Spain from the Muslim Emirate of Granada. 

The city was the last outpost of the Moorish 

forces and its capture and subsequent 

expulsion of the moors brought an end to 780 

years of Muslim control in Islamic Iberia. 

There then followed a mass expulsion of 

the Muslims who were banished to Northern 

Africa, with the remaining ones who stayed 

behind, forced to convert to Catholicism or 

face death. These people were known as the 

“Moriscos”. 

This is the key and the reason, to all 

celebrations of the “moros y cristianos” as 

they are known here.


What happens during a Moors and 

Christians fiesta? Although the fiesta is 

celebrated in many parts of Spain, for the 

Costa Blanca the fiesta is one of the most 

important days of the year and takes a 

tremendous amount of planning for this 

visual spectacle to come to fruition. 

Months are spent in planning the wonderful 

costumes, practising the march and the 

“battle” and choosing the best music to 

accompany the participants who strut, pose 

and dance to entertain the spectators along 

each parade route. 

The various enactments of the Moors and 

Christians across the Costa Blanca primarily 

represent the capture of each town or city 

by the Moors and the subsequent Christian 

reconquest. 

The gaily dressed towns people that take 

part in this festival are based in 2 opposing 

(but friendly) groups known as comparsas. 

Half of them are the Muslim “moros” and 

half represent the Christians. The streets 

throng for several days with people wearing 

outrageous and flamboyant costumes 

loosely inspired by Medieval clothing. 

The Christians often wear lots of fur, 

metal helmets, and armour. Many also 

either ride horses, or fun fake guns, 

adding to the amazing spectacle. 

Each party within the parade is often 

accompanied by live music, drums and 

lots of noise! 

In stark contrast, the Moors wear 

ancient Arabic styled costumes, carry 

curved swords called scimitars, and some 

of the more enthusiastic members of the 

respective fiesta committees even get to ride 

through the town on real camels or elephants! 

The climax of this spectacular fiesta is 

the fake battle where they re-enact the 

overpowering of the occupying Muslins and 

their subsequent expulsion from the town. It 

really is a fiesta worth seeing and happens in 

many towns up and down Spain, at different 

times of the year. 

When does the Moros Y Cristianos happen? 

The dates of the fiesta are different throughout 

the Costa Blanca and normally relates to the 

specific time period in which that particular 

area or town was liberated from Muslim rule. 

For example if you are planning a holiday 

in Denia, the fiesta usually runs around 

August time , but if your holiday this year 

is in Calpe then expect the fiesta to run from 

end of October, but the celebrations in most 

towns run along the same theme. 

The Moors and Christians fiesta is a very 

important one for Spain and if you are 

planning an interesting holiday this year on 

the Costa Blanca, it is well worth including 

this on your itinerary.

PUBLISHED WRITER? 

Few who become famous in the 

creative arts set out with the intention 

of making money. Attracted to their 

chosen pursuits their reward is to see, feel 

or hear their completed work. Those who 

do become rich were likely surprised at 

their good fortune. 

Becoming successful as a writer doesn’t 

necessarily mean adding much to one’s 

bank account but it’s nice if it does. True 

satisfaction is to see and hold their finished 

book. Writers are elevated to a social 

standing that money can’t buy. 

Writing a novel is not difficult. Simply 

by using your imagination and natural 

creativity you have probably written a score 








of novels already in the letters and emails 

you have sent. 

My advice to writers is to choose a 

subject that they are familiar with. It will 

make the writing experience easier and 

more enjoyable. 

Creating characters is part of the fun too. 

We recall Pinocchio the puppet who was 

created by Geppetto the woodcarver in a 

Tuscan village. Neither character existed 

other than in the imagination of the writer 

Carlo Collodi. When writing my novels 

my characters became real people to me 

and hopefully to my readers. 

Begin with a general plot but don’t put 

your writing in a straitjacket or it will 

confine you. When I start on a novel, I 

have little idea of its ending or how it will 

develop. Inspired by the unfolding story I 

find the story leads me as it unfolds. 

Writing is far easier if you use your 

laptop rather than a pen and pad. You 

can be as creative as you wish whilst 

constantly revising your storyline. 

Sadly, many a good story remained 

untold because the novice writer lacked 

confidence in their writing ability. In fact, 

most published authors lack the ability 

to write to retail standards. This is why 

writers engage a book editor who adds 

pace, space and grace, improves dialogue 

and provides flair and flow. 

Otherwise known as a ghost-writer 

your book editor will correct and enhance 

content and dialogue whilst adding flair 

and flow. He can, if you wish, increase the 

size of your book. 

A typical Mills & Boone novel is about 

40,000 words long whilst the average novel 

is likely 70,000 words in length. Rest when 

your story stops being fun but do aim for 

at least two or three thousand words a

Whining on 

with Steve 

To begin with I would like to talk a 

little about the glasses we chose to 

drink from and why. 

An obviously very important part of a 

good drinker’s armoury is the glass and 

each wine suits a specific glass for many 

reasons, the relevant glasses are pictured 

and the principles behind each are as 

follows. 

The Bordeaux glass is the tallest with 

broad base, large stem holding a large 

bowl that taper towards the opening. 

This glass allows for a greater x amount 

of oxygen to contact the wine and the 

wider opening makes the wine taste 

smoother, bringing out the fruit flavours. 

This is the glass for your big bold red 

wines. 

The Syrah glass is slightly smaller than 

the Bordeaux with a narrower opening 

that helps soften the harsher flavours and 

spices as the wine hits the mouth more 

gradually. Ideal for medium to fullbodied 

reds. 

The Burgundy glass is shorter and 

wider, the wider bowl helps the transmit 

the bolder aromas and flavours to the 

correct part of the tongue, again allowing 

more oxygen contact with the wine. 

For whites like Sauvignon Blanc for 

instance, a long stem narrow bowl glass 

thinner with less capacity than that of 

a red allows a minimum amount of 

oxygen, to allow you to fully inhale the 

concentrated aromas. 

The Chardonnay glass is the opposite 

to that of the Sauvignon, again a large 

bowl allows a larger surface area to 

interact with the air so as to release the 

oak and tannins present in the bolder 

more full-bodied whites. 

Champagne and Cava will be covered 

in a later issue as different situations 

prevail. 

As we are now into August, most 

people will prefer the lighter white wines 

to drink in the summer heat and in Spain 

a good Rioja Blanco is a great place to 

start. Made predominantly from varieties 

such as Viura, Tempranillo and Garnacha 

Blanco, Chardonnay, or Sauvignon Blanc 

these lovely wines come in four styles. 

Joven is young with no oak aging. 

Crianza, aged for 12 months with 6 in oak. 

Reserva, aged for 24 months, 6 in oak and 

Gran Reserva aged for 24 months, 6 in oak. 

As you would expect the young wines are 

fresh and citrus based, whilst moving up 

the age and price scale they become more 

bold and complex as the aging process 

brings out a more rounded combination of 

the oak/fruit maturation. 

Albarino, the main grape for Rias Baixas 

is a particular favourite of mine, these 

lovely Galician wines produce a great pale 

medium bodied citrus wine that is a perfect 

accompaniment to a lovely fish dish. 

Godello grapes are most often found in 

the northwest of Spain and again Galicia 

produces some lovely wines using this 

variety, mineral rich wines which can age 

really well and improve over years. A good 

pairing for chicken, risotto and chilli spiced 

dishes. 

Verdejo is exclusive to Rueda which has 

gained its own DO status and this lighter 

though still citrus wine is for me a good 

lunchtime white. 

Garnacha Blanca is the white version 

of the hearty Red Garnacha and is 

found predominantly in Rioja, Navarra 

and Aragon. This grape produces a 

Chardonnay like, rich creamy wine often 

oak aged appearing deeper in colour with 

notes of vanilla and cinnamon, this wine 

works well on its own or with sweet dishes 

or deserts. 

Valencia and Murcia both create some 

lovely whites with Denia the home of some 

good producers Bahia de Denia amongst 

them. 

A fine way to while away a sunny 

afternoon by the pool is to slowly sample 

a crisp verdejo before popping down to a 

nice restaurant for a plate of Turbot with a 

fine Garnacha Blanca.

After the sunshine comes the rain. 

I often think that we have an 

obsession with the temperature 

and the weather forecast. If I had paid 

more attention to the weather warnings, 

however, I would not have said adios to 

a large sunshade, which recently took off 

from my terrace one night; and shattered 

in my neighbour’s garden. However 

we do live in a temperate climate, and 

personally there is something about the 

changes of the seasons that I really love. 

When I was a small boy I announced 

to my Mother one day that in the future I 

would be living in the Country where the 

Palm Trees grew. 

Wisely, my Mother advised me that 

there were several Countries in the 

World where this could be! However, 

as I discovered Ibiza as a teenager, I 

soon realised that it would be Spain. 

As I arrived in Ibiza Town I announced 

to my horrified friends that this was 

the Country that I would die in. It was 

a macabre comment, but like many 

poignant things I have said in life, it will 

probably, inevitably, be true. 

Every Winter I am out looking for the 

early appearance of Spring. 

Endless trips to Jesus Pobre to see the 

blossoms and I still look for signs of the 

continuity of life amidst the spectacular 

flora of Spain. 

Then the neglected garden gets more 

than its fair share of rain and sun and 

CALENDAR 

Spring really is here, yet again. 

In the late Spring I am looking for the 

signs of an oncoming Summer because 

then I can live life with a house in which 

every door and window is open. I can 

potter in my terrace garden, and wait for 

various plants to show their true colours 

once again. This means that finally 

Summer comes and the watering begins. 

Nothing beats the smell of the water 

hitting the herb garden, where a waft of 

fresh basil, thyme and sage punctuates 

the extension of a lengthening, warm 

night. So too the treasures of colour 

appear in the closed buds and nature is 

generous once more. 

Now that we are in the midst of 

Summer I find myself counting the weeks 

that I have left of the idyllic sunshine 

filled days in my mountain village. The 

entire year merges triumphantly and 

inevitably, marching on from season to 

season. 

Come Autumn, and I will one day have 

to grab that blanket, knowing full well 

that one day soon I will be in my pyjamas 

and clutching a hot water bottle. I don’t 

care that the nights are dark because I can 

put on a sweater, light a candle, and I am 

cosy once more. 

Finding contentment isn’t easy if you 

have a complication that prevents you 

from enjoying what you have. We all 

have varying levels of complication 

as a part of our lives. Problems aren’t

problems from the very point of finding and 

applying the solution, however. The rich 

pattern of life comes from living it, and from 

being content with what you have. In every 

life sometimes the rain falls, and don’t we 

know it? 

Time has taught me to appreciate better 

what I have and no longer do I have to 

yearn for what I could have, or mourn for 

what I never had. 

Where’s the sense in that? 

Spirit is a daily comfort to me, always 

by my side. Faith may not pay the ever 

rising electricity bill or help with the 

Christmas shopping, but it does see me 

through times when I need that extra 

help, and understands me if I forget, in 

Summer euphoria, the things that I should 

have remembered. Like a constant and 

faithful friend Spirit has lifted me up when 

I am on a downward path and reassured 

me whenever I have doubted or been 

misunderstood. A friend is a friend for life 

because they have the power to understand 

you, the wisdom to advise you and the 

love to share into the bargain. When the 

going gets tough then the energies of Spirit 

increase to facilitate and to protect. 

This is a differing World, and it is 

becoming very rapidly a cause for concern 

that we face changes and difficulties. 

However, if you see the challenges that 

are being met, and you are part of the 

future, then whatever comes next is going 

to be dealt with somehow, someway and 

sometime. Often I am told that the best of 

times is now. If that is really true then let’s 

get on with it, whatever it brings us!

Erectile dysfunction, also known as 

impotence, is the inability to get 

and maintain an erection. 

It is a common problem especially in 

older men. It has been estimated that 

half of all men between the ages of 40 

and 70 will have it to some degree. 

Why does it happen? 

There are a range of causes for erectile 

dysfunction. These can be physical or 

psychological. 

Physical causes include: 

• Narrowing of the blood vessels going to 

the penis which is commonly associated 

with high blood pressure high 

cholesterol or diabetes. 

• Hormonal problems. 

• Surgery or injury. 

Psychological causes include: 

• Anxiety 

• Depression. 

• Relationship problems. 

Erectile dysfunction sometimes 

only occurs in certain situations. You

may be able to get an erection during 

masturbation, or you may wake up 

with an erection but are unable to get 

an erection with your sexual partner. 

If this is the case then it is likely to be a 

psychological cause. If you are unable to 

get an erection at any time then the cause

Erectile dysfunction can also be a side 

effect of some medicines. 

When to see your doctor 

You should see your doctor if you have 

erectile dysfunction for more than a few 

weeks. The condition may be the first sign 

of a more serious health condition such as 

heart disease. 

Diagnosis 

Although it may be an embarrassing 

subject to talk about, it is important to go 

to your doctor to get a diagnosis so that 

the cause can be identified. 

You will be asked questions about 

your symptoms and about your general 

health and lifestyle, your blood pressure 

will be taken. If you have symptoms 

of an enlarged prostate a digital rectal 

examination may be performed. You may 

have bloods taken for blood sugar and 

cholesterol or hormone levels. 

Treatment 

It is treated by tackling the cause of 

the problem whether it is physical or 

psychological. 

The narrowing of the arteries is one 

of the most common causes and your 

doctor may advise a change of lifestyle, 

losing weight to try to reduce your risk of 

cardiovascular disease as well as helping 

with symptoms. 

Sometimes medication is given to 

treat the narrowing of the arteries such 

as statins which reduce cholesterol and 

medication for high blood pressure. 

Medication such as Viagra can be used 

to manage erectile dysfunction in at least 

two thirds of cases. Vacuum pumps that 

encourage blood to flow to the penis and 

cause an erection are also very successful. 

Psychological treatments include 

cognitive behavioural therapy and sex 

therapy. 

Overall, treatments for erectile 

dysfunction have improved significantly 

in recent years. Most men are eventually 

able to have sex again.

A Different Life

In the dining room my grandson sits at 

the table wearing his headphones. He 

concentrates on the screen in front of 

him and taps away on a keyboard. He is 

occasionally interrupted by his 

sister who is trying to link up 

with a colleague on her 

computer. She is worried 

about a patient she 

saw yesterday who 

needs to have 

modifications 

made to his 

custom built 

wheelchair as 

his condition 

deteriorates. 

Today both 

of these 

grandchildren 

are working from 

home. 

The house is 

quiet - the kitchen 

my domain. I cooked a 

“full English” for the 3 of 

us earlier this morning, and 

am now preparing the vegetables 

for our evening meal. There will be 5 

of us to eat at around 7 p.m. when my daughter 

has returned from work and her boyfriend has 

walked round to join us. 

It really is “all go”. Never a dull moment. 

Next week, both of the grandchildren currently 

in the house with me, have their graduation 

ceremonies on consecutive days in different 

cities.; 

They both got First Class degrees and now 

have exciting jobs. My grand-daughter moves 

into her new house next week so that’s yet 

another cause for excitement and organisation. 

Tomorrow, it’s the weekend. The eldest of 

the three siblings will be arriving with her 

fiancee for the “family meal”. We will all sit 

round the table together for the first time in 5 

years. I can hardly believe that those precocious 

teenagers I last saw in 2017 have become such 

accomplished adults. 

What different lives they all 

lead. And how very different 

from mine - at home in 

Spain. I don’t have a 

computer, or even 

the Internet, and 

sometimes have 

to turn on the TV 

to find out what 

day it is. I can 

do what I like 

when I like. 

How different 

it is here where 

I have people 

around me all 

the time. How 

wonderful. And 

how exhausting. 

Never having 

been to this house 

before, I have been on a 

voyage of discovery - setting 

off on my walker each day in a 

different direction. I must have walked 

miles this last week and, so far, neither of my 

fake hips has complained. People are friendly 

and offer to help when they see me with my 

walker. It surprises me how upbeat the general 

feeling seems to be. It’s true that most of the 

town centre, as I remember it, no longer exists. 

Everywhere shops are boarded up. I find I don’t 

know how to cope with the electronic devices 

in the Supermarket and have to seek assistance. 

My cash is not acceptable as it is apparently 

out of date. I have to find a High Street Bank to 

exchange the money. A challenge for another 

day when I continue to explore the very 

different life I have here in England on my two 

week holiday.

Crepes 

I am not trying to be “posh” when I use the word ‘crepes’. British people use the word 

‘pancake’, but this is very restrictive as it makes us limit this simple, amazing product to 

‘Shrove Tuesday’ or ‘Pancake Day’ and the use of sugar and lemon. 

The French have used this very same recipe for centuries - firstly by the peasants who 

always had basic flour in the kitchen and a chicken or two outside. They could produce a 

quick, simple nutritious meal in minutes. As to the filling - I always told those USA members 

who attended my cookery classes “you are only limited by your imagination.” 

BASIC BATTER. Make it from 4 oz. plain flour (the cheapest Spanish flour is OK) to which 

you add a pinch of salt. 

Beat 2 large eggs with 7 fl.oz. milk + 3 fl.oz. water. Slowly incorporate the liquid into the 

flour to make a smooth 

batter. 

Then add the “secret” ingredient I learned from Delia Smith years ago - 2 tbspns. melted 

butter (or marg.) 

You can make up a 1/2 quantity if there’s only you - or use 1/2 of the batter to make a 

Yorkshire Pudding. 

No need to rest the batter, unless you want to. 

METHOD. Melt 1 tspn butter with 1 tspn oil in a small non-stick frying pan (or omelette 

pan). 

When hot, pour off the excess and tip in 2 tbsns. batter, swirling it around to make a thin 

layer. Watch it carefully for a minute or two, then lift the edge to see if the crepe is 

starting to brown on the underside. Flip it over for another minute or so. You may have 

to sacrifice the first one if it sticks, but don’t be upset, just bin it and try again. You’ll 

soon get the hang of it and can then vary the size and thickness of the crepes to suit 

yourself. 

THE FILLING. 

1. Chop some button mushrooms and fry them in butter with lots of chopped garlic and 

parsley plus salt and pepper. 

Spread the crepes out on a surface and divide the filling between them. Roll them up and 

arrange side by side in an ovenproof dish. Spoon over a sauce of your choice (Bechamel 

+ grated cheese - or even a thick mushroom soup made from a packet). 

2. Any thick sauce you would use with pasta. (Bolognese is particularly good - or tomato + 

pesto if you are vegetarian). Then grate cheese over the top of the filled crepes. 

Cover the dish with clingfilm and put it in the fridge until you want to reheat it, either in the 

Oven or Microwave. ENJOY.

Hi Folks 

Here I go again saying how hot it is but 

it is expected in August and it is 

Spain but I still complain 

every year woof woof, pant 

pant. 

As you can see from the 

photo Alfie won’t leave 

my side keeps cleaning 

me but it is a bit hot for 

this but I am easy going 

and let him do it. 

Well what a hot summer 

so far? I am being cooled 

down by my cooling collar 

and jacket. I felt so hot that 

I had to wear the jacket to cool 

me down quickly as I was becoming 

uncomfortable with the heat. I wear my 

cooling collar most of the time and so does 

Alfie. We are so pleased with our collars as it 

has really helped to keep our bodies cool. Plus 

we have a cooling mat. I also have another 

collar to help my rheumatism. It is a magnetic 

collar and I do not have any aches in my legs 

now. 

Bentley won’t have anything around his 

neck. Even a collar he just lies down and will 

not move he stays in the shade all day and 

has a daily long swim. However, he has felt 

the heat this summer. At first he wasn’t keen 

on wearing a collar so he has had a haircut 

and uses his cooling mat but enjoys a swim. 

Whereas as you can see from the photo Alife 

this year has ventured to put his paws into the 

pool. He doesn’t like a swimming pool but 

wanted to try and get his toy out of 

the water so he put his paws in. 

I cannot swim so I enjoy my 

back legs spread out onto 

the cold tiled floor, so my 

stomach is being cooled 

down. I really cannot swim 

I fell into the swimming 

pool one day and sunk to 

the bottom and stayed there 

until I was rescued. I even 

bark when I see a tap running 

with water as I am scared of 

water. Bentley after his swim does 

enjoy jumping onto the sunbeds and 

rolling around until he is dry. So all the towels 

go everywhere but Bentley isn’t bothered he 

carries on regardless. I trot off, as I think he is 

being silly. 

I do hope all my furry friends take note of 

what I am saying “You Must Drink A Lot of 

Water” so you do not dehydrate and try and 

stay out of the mid-day sun.

Australian singer, actress and 

activist. She was a four-time 

Grammy Award winner whose 

music career included five numberone 

hits and another top-ten hits 

and two number-one albums, If 

You Love Me, Let Me Know (1974) 

and Have You Never Been Mellow 

(1975). Eleven of her singles 

(including two Platinum and 14 

of her albums have been certified

With global sales of more than 100 

million records, Newton-John is 

one of the best-selling music artists 

from the second half of the 20th 

century to the present. 

In 1978, Newton-John starred 

in the musical film Grease, that 

became highest-grossing musical 

film ever at the time and whose 

soundtrack remains one of the 

world’s best-selling albums of all 

time. It features two major hit duets 

with co-star John Travolta: “You’re 

the One That I Want” – which is 

one of the best-selling singles of all 

time – and “Summer Nights”. Her

Newton-John, who battled breast

cancer three times, was an advocate 

for breast cancer research. She also 

was an activist for environmental 

and animal rights causes. 

Newton-John was born in 

Cambridge, England, to Brinley 

“Bryn” Newton-John and Irene 

Helene. Her father was born in 

Wales, to a middle-class family. 

Her mother was born in Germany, 

and had come to the UK with her 

family in 1933 to escape the Nazi 

Regime. 

Newton-John was the youngest 

of three children, following her 

brother Hugh a medical doctor, 

and her sister Rona, an actress who 

was married to Olivia’s Grease 

co-star Jeff Conaway (from 1980 

until their divorce in 1985). In 1954, 

when she was six, Newton-John’s 

family emigrated to Melbourne, 

Australia. 

She also appeared on The Go!! 

Show where she met her future 

duet partner, singer Pat Carroll, 

and her future music producer, 

John Farrar (Carroll and Farrar 

later married). In 1965 she entered 

and won a talent contest on the 

television program Sing, Sing, Sing 

“. She was initially reluctant to use 

the prize she had won, a trip to 

Great Britain, but travelled there 

nearly a year later after her mother 

encouraged her to broaden her 

horizons. 

Newton-John recorded her 

first single, “Till You Say You’ll Be 

Mine”, in Britain for Decca Records 

in 1966. 

Newton-John released her first 

solo album, If Not for You in 1971. 

In the UK, the album was known as 

Olivia Newton-John. The title track, 

written by Bob Dylan, was her first 

international hit. Her follow-up 

single, “Banks of the Ohio”, was a 

top 10 hit in the UK and Australia. 

She was voted Best British Female 

Vocalist two years in a row by 

the magazine Record Mirror. She 

made frequent appearances on Cliff 

Richard’s weekly show It’s Cliff 

Richard and starred with him in 

the telefilm The Case. 

In 1974, Newton-John 

represented the United Kingdom 

in the Eurovision Song Contest 

with the song “Long Live Love”. 

The song was chosen for Newton- 

John by the British public out of 

six possible entries (Newton-John 

later admitted that she disliked 

the song). Newton-John finished 

fourth at the contest, held in 

Brighton, behind the Swedish 

winning entry, “Waterloo” by 

ABBA. 

Encouraged by expatriate 

Australian singer Helen Reddy, 

Newton-John left the UK and 

moved to the US. 

Newton-John was appointed 

Officer of the Order of the British 

Empire (OBE) in the 1979 New Year 

Honours and Dame Commander 

of the Order of the British Empire 

(DBE) in the 2020 New Year 

Honours for services to charity, 

cancer research and entertainment. 

Newton-John’s career soared 

after she starred in the film 

adaptation of the Broadway 

musical Grease in 1978. She was

her Tomorrow experience and 

concerned that she was too old to

Newton-John’s Australian accent 

by recasting her character from the 

play’s original American Sandy 

Dumbrowski to Sandy Olsson,

Grease became the biggest boxoffice 

hit of 1978. The soundtrack 

album spent 12 non-consecutive 

weeks at No. 1 and yielded three 

Top 5 singles for Newton-John: the 

platinum “You’re the One That I 

Want”) with John Travolta, the gold 

“Hopelessly Devoted to You” and 

the gold “Summer Nights” with 

John Travolta and the film’s cast. 

“Magic” was Newton-John’s 

biggest pop hit to that point (four 

weeks at No. 1) and still ranks as 

the biggest AC hit of her career 

(five weeks at No. 1). The film has 

since become a cult classic and the 

basis for a Broadway show that ran 

for more than 500 performances 

beginning in 2007 and was 

nominated for four Tony Awards 

including Best Musical. 

In 1981, Newton-John released 

her most successful studio album, 

the double platinum Physical, 

which strongly reinforced her 

image change by showcasing 

risqué, rock-oriented material. 

The success of Physical led to an 

international tour and the release 

of her second hits collection, the 

double-platinum Olivia’s Greatest 

Hits Vol. 2 which yielded two 

more top-40 singles: “Heart Attack” 

and “Tied Up”. 

After a nearly three-year hiatus 

following the birth of her daughter 

Chloe in January 1986, Newton- 

John resumed her recording career 

with the 1988 album, The Rumour. 

Both the single and the album 

faltered commercially as the nearly 

40-year-old Newton-John seemed 

“old” when compared with the 

teen queens. 

Newton-John was primed for 

another comeback in 1992 when 

she compiled her collection, and 

planned her first tour since her 

Physical trek ten years earlier. 

Shortly after the album’s release, 

Newton-John was diagnosed 

with breast cancer, forcing her to 

cancel all publicity for the album, 

including the tour. She received 

her diagnosis the same weekend 

her father died. Newton-John 

recovered and later became an 

advocate for breast cancer research 

and other health issues 

She was a performer on the 

1979 Music for UNICEF Concert 

for the UN’s International Year of 

the Child televised worldwide. 

She was appointed a Goodwill 

ambassador to the United Nations 

Environment Programme. 

Newton-John was listed as 

president of the Isle of Man 

Basking shark Society between 

1998 and 2005. 

In 2008, she raised funds to help 

build the Olivia Newton-John 

Cancer and Wellness Centre in 

Melbourne, Australia. She led a 

three-week, 228 km walk along the 

Great Wall of China during April, 

joined by various celebrities and 

cancer survivors throughout her 

trek. The walk symbolised the steps 

cancer patients must take on their 

road to recovery. 

In 2002, Newton-John was also 

inducted into Australia’s ARIA Hall 

of Fame. 

In 2015, Newton-John was 

inducted into the Music Victoria 

Hall of Fame. 

On 2 November 2019, Julien’s 

Auctions auctioned hundreds of 

memorabilia items from Newton- 

John’s career. The sale raised $2.4 

million. Newton-John’s Grease 

outfit garnered $405,700; her 

pants and jacket were purchased 

separately by two different 


billionaires. Sara Blakely, founder 

of Spanx, bought Newton-John’s 

black skintight pants from Grease 

for $162,000. The anonymous 

buyer who acquired her famous 

Grease leather jacket for $243,200 

(£185,000) returned the item to 

her and said: “It should not sit in 

a billionaire’s closet for countryclub 

bragging rights. The odds of 

beating a recurring cancer using 

the newest emerging therapies 

is a thousand fold greater than 

someone appearing out of the blue, 

buying your most famous and 

cherished icon, and returning it to 

In 1968, Newton-John was engaged 

to but never married Bruce Welch, 

one of her early producers and 

co-writer of her hit “Please Mr. 

Please”. 

In May 2017, it was announced 

that Newton-John’s breast cancer 

had returned and metastasised to 

her lower back. Her back pains had 

initially been diagnosed as sciatica. 

She subsequently revealed this was 

actually her third bout with breast 

cancer, as she had a recurrence of 

the disease in 2013 in addition to 

her initial 1992 diagnosis. With the 

2017 recurrence, the cancer had 

spread to her bones and progressed 

to stage IV. Newton-John 

experienced significant pain from 

the metastatic bone lesions and had 

spoken of using cannabis oil to ease 

her pain. She was an advocate for 

the use of medical cannabis, her 

daughter Chloe owns a cannabis 

farm in Oregon. 

On 8 August 2022, Newton-John 

died from cancer at her home in 

the Santa Ynez Valley of California. 

She was 73.
