INVESTIGATIONS are continuing 

into the death of 

a flying instructor based 

at the Spanish Air Force 

academy at San Javier, 

after his C-101 plane 

crashed into the waters of 

the Mar Menor on Monday 

morning. 

No possible reasons have 

so far been given for the 

crash, with Air Academy 

investigations hampered by 

the fact that the plane had 

no black box on it. 

The C-101 is used for 

training purposes by the 

Eagle Patrol (La Patrulla 

Aguila), which is the Spanish 

equivalent of the RAF’s 

Red Arrows display team. 

Commander Francisco 

Marín Núñez was an experienced 

training officer at the 

San Javier base, with over 

three thousand flying hours 

under his belt, of which almost 

half were in the C-101 

plane.. 

The crash was reported 

at 9.38am, and the Defence 

Ministry reported that Commander 

Núñez managed to 

eject before impact, but his 

death was confirmed shortly 

before 1.00pm. 

Shocked eye witnesses saw 

the plane crash into the sea, 

and a strong smell of petrol 

became quickly noticeable, 

as access was shut off to the 

La Manga area beaches at 

Galúa, Monte Blanco and 

Entremares, where aircraft 

debris washed ashore..

The star-spangled ladies from the company 

will be performing an opening tap 

dance routine as part of the Reach for the 

Stars show which is a mixture of dance, 

song, and comedy. 

San Fulgencio’s Cardenal Belluga Theatre 

will see three performances between 

Thursday September 26th and Saturday 

September 28th, with curtain up at 

7.30pm. 

Tickets are priced at just eight euros, 

and all the proceeds from the shows will go 

to local charities.

BEACHES 

THIEVING has been dramatically reduced 

from San Pedro del Pinatar’s 

beaches, according to the local police. 

The changes have been brought about 

by the town creating a specialist beach 

unit three years ago, and Inocencio Sánchez, 

who leads the unit, says that theft 

rates have now been slashed by up to 90 

per cent since 2016. 

Unlicensed hawkers who often sell fake 

goods have also been targetted by the 

beach unit.

THOUSANDS of people 

lined the streets of Torrevieja 

last Saturday afternoon 

to see the start of one 

of the world’s premier cycle 

races, La Vuelta. 

The 2019 event opened with 

a 13 kilometre team time trial 

event, which began from the 

city’s famous salt flats, with 

the starting ramp made out of 

salt, and finishing in in Torrevieja’s 

port area. 

The race then moved to a 

couple of stages further north 

in Alicante Province on Sunday 

and Monday, before going 

out of the region.

What you should expect from 

a good financial advisor? 

Reduced pension options for non- 

UK residents. 

I have been advising in Spain now 

for over 7 years, and during this time 

have seen many changes to pension 

rules. The biggest change by far 

was the introduction of Pension 

freedoms in 2015, where people 

now have the option to access their 

pension from 55 and essentially 

have the flexibility to take what they 

want, when they want it. 

Pension Freedoms extended to expats 

living here in Spain and I have 

sat down with hundreds of clients 

over the years and discussed their 

individual pension plans and advised 

them on their options. 

About a month ago, I sat down with 

a client who had a personal pension 

with Aegon. She has lived in Spain 

for many years and she contacted 

me as she was reaching retirement 

age and wanted to understand what 

her options were and how she went 

about accessing her pension. At 

the meeting she completed a letter 

of authority which allowed me to 

contact her pension company on her 

behalf and discuss her specific plan. 

When I received the information 

back from them I was shocked to 

understand that because she is a 

‘non-UK resident’ her options were 

limited to either take the pension in 

full (her pension was over £100k 

so the tax implications would be 

catastrophic), to purchase an annuity 

(something which we wouldn’t 

advise with annuity rates so low), or 

to transfer to a different scheme. She 

had no option to leave her pension 

where it was and access it flexibly. 

I was convinced that they’d made a 

mistake so called them for clarification, 

and during the phone call, they 

confirmed that the member had 

limited options as she was a non-UK 

resident. 

This member had planned her whole 

retirement based on her having 

flexible access to her pension, so it 

potentially changed her entire future 

plans. For this client, I was able to 

find a solution by moving her pension 

to a UK based pension called 

a SIPP, where she could not only 

benefit from having a local adviser 

here in Spain, but also it meant she 

could take advantage of full flexible 

access. This is not an isolated 

incident, and we’re seeing more and 

more schemes effectively refusing 

to give ongoing service to non-UK 

residents, meaning our only option 

is often to transfer them to a scheme 

that will allow non-UK residents. 

My advice to anyone with a pension 

that they are yet to access is to understand 

what options are available

QUICK DIP THEFTS 


THE NUMBER of swimmers on Barcelona 

area beaches having their belongings 

stolen whilst they are in the water has 

got so serious, that the local police have 

handed out almost 200 emergency kits to 

victims this year. 

Included in the set is a T-shirt with the 

city’s logo on, a pair of shorts, flip flops and a 

metro ticket. So far this summer, 174 bathers 

have been helped by the police, with officer 

patrols being stepped up to try and curb 

the problem across the Catalan capital’s ten 

main beaches. 

The most popular beach is at La Barceloneta, 

with 900 thefts reported there over the 

season. 

Second infant death lands parents in jail 

A couple from Caudete (Albacete) are 

reported to have been jailed after their 

infant son suffered a traumatic death, 18 

months after another baby of theirs died 

in mysterious circumstances. 

The first child, aged just four months, was 

admitted to Albacete hospital in January 

2018 with head injuries and later died from 

cerebral bleeding. Although the Guardia 

Civil said that their explanation was inadequate 

- they stated they had found the boy 

in that condition - they were not detained, although 

a homicide investigation was opened. 

The mother soon became pregnant again 

and gave birth to another boy this February.

At the same age, four months, emergency 

services were contacted and the baby was 

found dead in the defendants home. 

He had suffered severe rib injuries and 

the autopsy showed signs of previous similar 

injuries. In this instance the couple were arrested 

and have remained in jail since July, 

although both protest their innocence, blaming 

possible medical malpractice. A trial is 

likely to follow unless evidence is found 

clearing the couple, while questions may also 

be asked of social services and the police after 

the second death. 

Cop with kit 

RYANAIR pilots based in 

Spain have announced five 

days of strike in the second 

half September, after 

the carrier confirmed that 

it will close its bases in Las 

Palmas, Tenerife South, 

Lanzarote and Girona in 

January, putting the jobs of 

more than 500 pilots and 

cabin crew at risk. 

The carrier told staff last 

month that it planned to cut 

its presence on the ground at 

airports due to delays in the 

delivery of the grounded Boeing 

737 MAX. 

A union spokesman said 

around 900 pilots would be 

invited to walk out on September 

19th, 20th, 22nd, 

27th, and 29th, with some of 

those dates coinciding with

planned strikes already announced 

by cabin crew staff 

in Spain. 

The crew have called 

strikes for September 1st, 

2nd, 6th, 8th, 13th, 15th, 

20th, 22nd, 27nd and 29th in 

protest at the closures. 

UK-based pilots took strike 

action over their contracts 

at the end of last week, with 

Ryanair saying all of their 

scheduled flights were largely 

unaffected.

Laser yob 

arrested 


A minor has been arrested 

in Valencia on suspicion 

of shining a laser pen into 

the cockpit of planes trying 

to land at the cities Manises 

airport, a police press 

statement said this week. 

The incident was first reported 

at around midnight 

last Thursday and police were 

able to track the source of the 

green light to Avenida Cid.

Plugging in 

the car 

ELECTRICITY giant Iberdrola 

has been awarded 

the licence to install three 

“quick” charging points for 

electric cars in Ondara. 

These are to be on Calle 

Pego, Calle Adsubia and Avenida 

Alicante, said Mayor Jose 

Ramiro. They can charge two 

vehicles at a time and will have 

a total power of 100,000 watts. 

The zones will be painted 

green and signs put up explaining 

their use to (hopefully) 

avoid other drivers parking 

there. 

Wheelchair thief 

arrested 


IT is hard to imagine a 

more heartless crime than 

stealing a child’s wheelchair, 

but a woman in 

Elche has been arrested 

and accused of exactly 

that this week. 

The powered vehicle, worth 

€3,000, had been taken from 

the lobby of an apartment in 

Elche last Friday. 

The same evening the 

mother of the child whose 

chair had been stolen saw a 

woman trying to sell what 

looked like exactly the same 

vehicle in a second hand shop 

in the city. 

After an altercation between 

the two women started 

getting out of hand, the local 

police were called. 

They interviewed the pair 

and then arrested the alleged 

thief. The wheelchair has 

been returned to its young 

owner.

DEADLY CROSSING 

A WOMAN died in Torrevieja 

on Tuesday morning 

when she was knocked 

over by a large articulated 

lorry on a pedestrian 

crossing. 

The accident happened 

shortly before 11.00am on 

the access road to the roundabout 

on Calle Orihuela 

from the N-332. 


The deceased pedestrian 

was a 63-year-old Spanish 

national, whilst the long 

trailer was driven by a Portuguese 

man, with police 

investigating whether the 

height of the lorry’s cabin 

prevented him from seeing 

the woman on the crossing. 

Let the bells ring out again 

A parish in Valencia, which 

has not heard the sound 

of church bells since the 

church tower was destroyed 

during the Civil War, 

this week held a ceremony 

to bless the new bells it has 

now acquired. 

They have been purchased 

after an 18 month campaign 

in Santa Catalina and San 

Agustin de Valencia to restore 

the tower which resulted in 

the construction of the new 

bells by a Valencian company 


while they were cast in a specialist 

firm in Italy. 

The different sized bells all 

have their own names Santa 

Catalina (100 kilos), San 

Agustin (120 kilos), San Jose 

(250 kilos) and the big one 

Nuestra Señora de Gracia at 

350 kilos. 

The archbishop attended 

the ceremony and the bells 

will be installed in their new 

home shortly. 


THE popular Campoverde Reef Band 

will be performing at a dinner-dance in 

aid of Help at Home, Costa Blanca at 

the end of next month, as they continue 

to support the Adiem mental health 

charity in Torrevieja. 

The event will be at the El Nacional 

restaurant, Punta Prima, on Friday September 

27th, starting at 7.00pm, and will 

raise money for the Adiem house extension 

project, which will cost 18 thousand euros 

to build. 

HAH has pledged to get 10 thousand euros, 

and have currently reached six thousand 

euros. 

Tickets for the three-course meal are 

priced at 15 euros, and include one free 

drink.

HISTORIC GUARDAMAR 


OVER 300 people checked out 

the restoration work going on at 

Guardamar castle and the area 

surrounding it last Saturday. 

The conduced tour was organised 

by Guardamar del Segura 

council, and was one of the first 

steps taken by the authority to improve 

promoting the history of the 

area. 

Visitors were told about a number 

of discoveries during recent 

excavations at the castle site including 

the remains of an old bell 

tower.

SMUGGLERS SMASHED 

FIVE BRITISH people have 

been arrested by the National 

Police in Malaga, 

after being accused of 

belonging to a gang that 

used courier firms to 

smuggle drugs from Spain 

across Europe. 

The detainees are three 


men and two women aged 

38 to 62, and were refused 

bail after appearing before a 

judge in Fuengirola. 

Over a hundred kilos of 

drugs were seized along with 

over 20 thousand euros.

A VARIETY show staged 

at the Vista Lounge in 

Quesada last Sunday in 

aid of the Dolores-based 

SAT Animal Rescue charity 

raised just over a thousand 

euros. 

Entertainers including 

Rebecca Holt(pictured) gave 

their services free of charge, 

with a tombola boosting the 

final total, which also got a 

lift from Vista Lounge staff 

handing over all of their tips. 

Meanwhile the 2020 SAT

Seized drugs 

Packages of the drugs in 

vacuum-sealed containers 

destined for the UK and 

Sweden were intercepted. 

A police spokesman said 

that the suspects regularly 

switched rental properties 

and vehicles in order to 

avoid being caught. 

WHILE the predicted extreme weather 

for the Costa Blanca didn’t quite materialise 

this week, in Madrid, which had 

largely escaped weather warnings, they 

were battered with extreme hail storms 

and flash flooding on Monday. 

The airport, underground and many major 

roads were closed on what was blamed 

on an “isolated depression” highlighting the 

difficulty of predicting the weather in Spain 

at times.

City Council has been 

arrested on charges of 

providing false registration 

documents to immigrants. 

Reports are that legal 

proceedings are under

being carried out behind

The authorities dealt with over 1,100 incidents 

in a short period while the meteorological 

office said there were 9,300 lightning 

strikes in one evening over Madrid. 

The city centre experienced 46.4 litres of 

rainfall, much of it actually hail which piled 

up on the streets and had to be shovelled 

away in scenes more reminiscent of mid-winter 

than August. 

Immigration fraud arrest 

was supposed to have acted 

for financial gain or due 

to sympathy with the situation 

of the immigrants.



SERIAL UPSKIRTER 

A MAN who snapped hundreds 

of upskirt photos 

was arrested by the National 

Police in Madrid last 

week, after they tracked 

his online activity to catch 

him in the act. 

The Columbian national, 

aged 53, was detained while 

he was snapping an illicit 

shot using a camera hidden 


in a backpack. The police 

have since tied him to more 

than 500 incidents and believe 

he uploaded 283 clips 

of the footage to porn sites. 

“The detained man generally 

recorded his female victims 

in busy areas such as 

the Metro before following 

them to the street,” the police 

said in a statement. 

He “sometimes even introducing 

himself to them in supermarkets 

or shops in order 

to obtain better shots of their 

intimate areas, which he recorded 

in close proximity.” 

The suspect acted “compulsively” 

and targeted minors, 

authorities said. 

TEEN’S SHOCK RIDE 

AN IRISH teenager 

smashed through an iron 

gate and plunged his family’s 

rental car into the wall 

of a school while on holiday 

in Marbella on the Costa 

del Sol. 

The 13-year-old boy 

crashed the Audi A4 through 


two sets of iron gates and 

across a busy road. 

The car, which is worth 

over 30 thousand euros, was 

written-off after the accident.. 

It’s understood the father 

left the teenager alone in the 

car, with the boy saying that 

he climbed into the driver’s 

seat. 

He accidentally knocked 

the motor of the automatic 

vehicle into gear and burst 

through the gates, as he left 

a trail of destruction, as fortunately 

nobody was injured.

RED CROSS TO 

THE RESCUE 

Grandfather runs over 

wife and grandchild 


A 21 month old child is in 

hospital in a “very serious 

condition” after being run 

over by her grandfather’s 

car in what appears to be 

an unlucky accident. 

The incident happened in 

Cuenca and the girl’s grandmother 

was also struck by 

the vehicle and has suffered 

several injuries. She was 

holding the toddler in her 

arms in the courtyard of 

their house when it appeared 

that the car lurched forward 

after being started by the 

grandfather. Both victims 

were transferred to the Albacete 

General Hospital the 

woman by ambulance while 

the girl’s injuries meant that 

a helicopter was used.

A Red Cross patrol boat and 

helicopter saved the lives 

of two people who had fallen 

into the sea at a remote 

part of the Denia coastline 

last week. 

The pair were part of a 

group of youngsters who were 

walking at Cova Talla when 

they were dragged into the 

water by a freak wave. They 

managed to cling to some 

rocks but were unable to get to

A man involved in a spectacular crash 

in Denia town centre on Sunday evening 

was found to be three times over the legal 

alcohol limit, the authorities have 

confirmed. 

He was going at high speed at the entry to 

Plaza de Jaume 1 near the Casa de la Cultura 

when the vehicle flipped and hit four other 

parked cars, badly damaging them all.

The driver was shown to have a blood alcohol 

level of 82 mg/litre against a legal limit of 

25 mg/litre - 3.3 times the limit. 


AN earthquake struck the 

Marina Alta at around 10 in 

the evening last Wednesday 

night (21 August). 

The quake was felt by 

many people in Javea, Teulada, 

Denia, Benitatxell and 

Pedreguer, prompting a number 

of calls to the authorities. 

While there were fears that 

the rumbling could have been 

anything from a gas explosion 

to a car crash, there have been 

no reports of any damage to 

property or injuries to people. 

The Geographic Institute 

later confirmed that the earthquake 

measured 2.8 on the 

Richter Scale and had its epicentre 

in Poble Nou de Benitatxell. 

Tremors are relatively 

common on the southern Costa 

Blanca and Murcia - where 

a number of people died in one 

such incident in Lorca a few 

years ago - but are rarer this 

far north on the coast.

IT’S a subject that no-one 

likes talking about – but 

it is a conversation that 

everyone needs to have. 

Have you got your affairs 

in order if anything should 

happen to you? 

Estimates vary, but it

around two thirds of British 

people do not have a will. 

And if a British national 

who owns assets in Spain 

dies without a will, matters 

can – and do - become rather

The Spanish legal system 

is very different when 

it comes to the inheritance 

procedure compared to other 

countries like the UK. 

It is also worth noting that 

Spanish inheritance law also 

varies from region to region. 

Legal experts at Sun Lawyers,

Having a Spanish will ensures 

that the inheritance 

procedure is straightforward

EU citizens living in 

Spain, as well as a number of 

non-EU countries, can now 

choose whether the law of 

their home country or their 

country of residence applies. 

If a foreign resident dies 

without leaving a will or 

making an official declaration 

on which law they wish 

to apply, the law of the country 

where they resided for 

the last five years will apply. 

If your estate is dealt with 

under Spanish inheritance 

law, forced heirship rules 

apply - known as the Law of 

Obligatory Heirs in Spain. 

This means there are restrictions 

on how you distribute 

your estate, as a certain percentage 

needs to be set aside 

for certain relatives. 

If you die without leaving 

a Spanish will, the laws of 

intestate succession apply. 

In Spanish succession law, 

this means that the estate 

will be inherited by the following 

- taking into account 

the Law of Obligatory Heirs: 

• children of the deceased 

• if there are no children, 

the parents 

• if no children or parents, 

the surviving spouse 

• if there are none of these, 

then the next closest 

blood relatives (up to a 

fourth-grade limit in the 

family tree) 

• if there are no legal beneficiaries 

from any of 

these groups, then the 

Spanish state inherits 

the estate! 

Making a Spanish will can 

also help sort out what levels 

of inheritance tax are likely 

to be paid. 

The rules and Spanish 

inheritance tax rates vary 

according to the relationship

A new species of dinosaur 

has been officially identified 

from remains found in 

the Valencian Community 

and named after the town 

where they were discovered. 

This was at Vallibona in 

the Castellon province about 

20 years ago while palaeontologists 

have now declared 

it a new species. They have 

named it Vallibonavenatrix 

Cani, the first word meaning 

“hunter of Vallibona” and

A growing wild parrot population

THE mayor of a Valencian City who said 

in her pre-election manifesto that “her 

only official car would be her shoes” has 

come in for criticism after it has been 

revealed that not just one but two cars 

have been purchased for her official use. 

Amparo Marco, of the left leaning PSOE, 

has been mayor of Castellon City since 2015 

and the recent purchase of the two high end 

Ford Mondeo hybrid vehicles has just come 

to light. 

The opposition PP criticised Ms Marcos 


both for seeming to go back on her original 

promise and the lack of transparency with 

the process. They have asked for an official 

response and also confirmation of the cost of 

the vehicles. 

A quick search of the Ford website shows 

that the basic Mondeo hybrid costs a shade 

under €30,000 although government vehicles 

tend to have several add-ons, often for security 

reasons. 

New home for gorillas

being made the decision was 

also taken to swap the habitats 

of the two groups, which

not like change in their environment 

and experienced 

trainers had to be brought in 

to settle them.

in plant life, improvements 

in drainage, new 

heating and the addition of 

motorised gates. 

There are currently eight 

animals at the Bioparc, six 

family members and two unattached

A psychotic episode or drug issues are

year old man in Valencia suddenly attacked 

a pensioner he had never met before, 

according to authorities. T

by the man, described as a large figure, in 

the Patraix district, placing her in a stranglehold. 

She began screaming out and police 

soon arrived at the scene. 

They managed to prise the attacker off 

his victim but were themselves subjected 

to a “very violent” attack as the perpetrator 

started punching, biting and kicking them. 

He was arrested and the victim given 

medical treatment for bruising in the throat 

area. She said in a statement that she had 

never met her attacker and had no idea why 

he took the actions he did.

“The job of everybody in 

Parliament” is to deliver 

Brexit, according to UK 

Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, 

speaking on Monday at 

the end of the G7 summit in 

France. 

Johnson also said he was 

“marginally more optimistic” 

about striking a new Brexit 

deal with the EU. 

But he refused to be drawn 

on whether he would suspend 

Parliament to stop it preventing 

a no-deal exit. 

Mr Johnson’s comments 

come as MPs have started 

talks to discuss ways to avoid 

the UK leaving the EU without 

a deal on October 31st. 

Asked about the possibility 

of MPs thwarting plans 

to leave the EU at the end of 

October, Mr Johnson said: “I 

think it’s the job of everybody 

in Parliament to get this thing 

done. 

“I think it’s what the people 

want, I also think, by the way, 

it’s what our friends and partners 

on the other side of the 

Channel want - they want it 

over.” 

Meanwhile, a no-deal Brexit 

would leave the UK at the 

mercy of US President Donald 

Trump, Jeremy Corbyn has 

claimed. The Labour party 

leader accused Boris Johnson 

of “cosying up to Trump” because 

“no-deal Brexit is really 

a Trump-deal Brexit”. 

Mr Corbyn said he believes 

the EU referendum result is 

being hijacked by those wanting 

what he called a “bankers’ 

Brexit”. 

He said:- “The Tories are 

going out with their begging 

bowl to billionaire hedge 

funders to raise cash for an 

autumn general election.” 

“The chaos and uncertainty 

caused by a no-deal Brexit is 

a potential goldmine for speculators 

betting against the 

pound.”

For those who have yet to 

visit this colourful city – 

what are you waiting for? 

It’s frequently ranked in the 

top places to visit in the 

USA, often combined with 

a stay in Los Angeles or as 

part of a tour of the West 

Coast of the USA. 

Originally given city status 

in 1910, the boundaries of this 

town have grown so much 

that the original, and famous 

‘Welcome to Fabulous Los Angeles’ 

sign was originally over 

4km from the last building, 

and now is less than 0.5km! 

Whilst efforts have been 

made by various top name hotels 

to entice the family market, 

by way of holiday theme 

parks, these endeavours have 

invariably lacked interest and 

closed along the way, leaving 

Vegas most famous for 

it’s gambling and hotel area, 

known as The Strip. Consisting 

of over 4 miles of glittering 

towers of hotels, casinos, 

big name concerts and top 

entertainment shows, even 

the most committed of travellers 

would be hard put to 

get through this lot in a short 

time! 

Not to worry, you can take 

your time and see it all. The 

hotels in Vegas are quite simply 

stunning, with 15 of the 25 

largest hotels in the world all 

located in this area. Top end 

hotels are the Bellagio and the 

Venetian, which have resulted 

in many of the older hotels also 

investing in refurbishment. A 

win-win if you are a guest at 

any of these hotels. There are 

plenty of medium range hotels 

to stay at also (if your pocket 

money doesn’t quite reach the 

prices of the Bellagio, or if you 

prefer to keep your pennies for 

the one-armed bandits!). Hotels 

such as the Flamingo offer 

plenty for your dollar and 

still keeping you in the central 

location. 

So what to do in Vegas? 

Well the pretty obvious answer 

is the Casinos. Its hard 

to turn around without being 

in front of yet another way to 

lose your inheritance. Or not! 

Some casinos offer free lessons 

on many of the house games. 

Most would agree that it’s essential 

to watch the games in 

play too, to get a feel for how 

they operate. And if you do 

win, big or small, remember 

to save it and walk away! If 

not, for sure you will lose it 

all again and probably more 

too… 

Don’t forget that there are 

many top performers entertaining 

in Vegas year round. 

Cher, Shania Twain, Barry 

Manilow and Santana, and 

that’s just in one month this 

year! There’s year round entertainment 

from the industry’s 

top performers as well as 

captivating magic shows from 

Penn and Teller, or amazing 

choreographics from the 

Cirque de Soleil. Many of the 

shows sell out, so it’s a good 

idea to check for tickets before 

booking your flights. 

If you want to escape from 

the flashing lights and beeping 

noises of the machines 

for a while, there are plenty 

of alternative forms of entertainment 

available. You could 

also visit the Grand Canyon, 

many hotels can book this excursion 

for you, whether your 

preferred mode is by bus or 

by helicopter. Another not to 

be missed experience is a visit 

to the Hoover Dam, usually 

around 3 hours for a guided 

excursion of this awesome 

structure, and perhaps with a 

detour to a chocolate factory or 

botanic gardens on the return 

journey. You can connect with 

nature by visiting the Lion 

Habitat Ranch, a short distance 

from the city. And if it’s 

your birthday, they’ll even let 

you in for free!



RIVER RIDE TO THE FRENCH RIVIERA 

GLIDING along the river with 

a cocktail in hand, as stars 

twinkle above me, I’m certain 

there is no better way to 

travel. 

Exploring a new destination 

each day of a holiday usually 

means living out of a suitcase 

and spending hours on the road 

every night. 

But memories of cramped 

coaches slip far into the distance 

thanks to Avalon Poetry 

II, the cruise ship which is 

smoothly transporting my partner 

Hayley and me to many of 

the highlights of the Provence 

region in the South of France. 

The popularity of European 

river cruising has rocketed in 

recent years, and our dusk arrival 

into Avignon makes it 

easy to appreciate why. 

Our visit coincides with the 

city’s annual arts festival and 

our immersion in the event 

begins even before we dock, 

thanks to musical performances 

taking place alongside the 

river. 

We come to a stop right next 

to a fairground, so I finish my 

pina colada and in just a couple 

of minutes, Hayley and I are 

hundreds of feet in the air on a 

Ferris wheel, struggling to believe 

how much fun we’re having 

as we look down at the busy 

streets below. 

Arrivals like this aren’t possible 

on big cruise ships. Due to 

their size, they often dock so far 

away from city centres that you 

have to take a taxi or bus to get 

to where the action is. But river 

cruising means we can dash off 

the boat and find ourselves immediately 

where we want to be. 

Avalon includes a guided 

tour for every city and town visited, 

so the next morning we’re 

taken to the sumptuous Palace 

of the Popes. 

In the 14th century, Avignon 

was the permanent residence 

of six successive popes. The 

prestige and pomp of the role 

is clear as we walk around 

the private chapels and apartments 

of their official residence. 

Convenience is one of the 

main advantages to this form 

of travel. Our hotel room – and 

all our belongings – sail with 

us. Croatian waiter Tomislav 

knows my name, and my favourite 

drink. The time spent travelling 

feels genuinely enjoyable 

rather than a necessary chore 

to get to the next port. 

Modern ocean cruise liners 

are equipped with cinemas, 

swimming pools and a dozen 

bars, restaurants and cafes, but 

being one of thousands of people 

can be a touch overwhelming. 

Poetry II carries just 128 

passengers, so the chances of us 

bumping into the same person 

twice are pretty high. 

Most of our fellow travellers 

hail from the US, Canada, Australia 

and New Zealand – with 

a few Brits added to the mix – 

and by the end of the week, we 

know many of them well. Bob, 

an eccentric Kiwi, has a seemingly 

unlimited supply of tales 

from a lifetime of travelling the 

world flying hot air balloons for 

a living, while Sue and Kyra – 

a mother and daughter from 

Vancouver – are full of excitement 

after “abandoning” their 

husbands for this once-in-alifetime 

trip to Europe. 

Many of the long-haul travellers 

tell us they opted for a river 

cruise because they were anxious 

of making their own way 

around a foreign country. 

British holidaymakers probably 

feel more comfortable negotiating 

French customs and 

etiquette because it’s only a 

short hop across the Channel, 

but one big advantage of river 

cruising is it removes a lot of 

uncertainty over how much the 

trip will cost. On top of the daily 

excursions, the price of the 

cruise includes three superb 

meals a day, plus beer and wine 

with dinner and an unlimited 

supply of hot drinks and cake. 

Pretty much the only time 

we have to dip into our spending 

money is at the very start 

of the holiday, when we spent 

a night in Monte Carlo before 

boarding the ship. The principality 

– on the coast of the sparkling 

Mediterranean Sea and 

surrounded by France – oozes 

wealth, from the yachts and supercars 

to the luxury stores and 

flashy restaurants. The feeling 

that we’ve entered a distant 

world only grows when we step 

into our hotel, the Fairmont, to 

see Mo Farah in the lobby inspecting 

a white Aston Martin 

DB9. We resist the urge to take 

a photo and stroll casually past 

the Olympian, trying to look 

like this is a perfectly normal 

holiday experience for us. 

Monte Carlo is great – especially 

if you have the bank balance 

to fully enjoy it – but the 

comfort of our cruise ship and 

beauty of Provence is the undoubted 

highlight of our trip. 

Avalon Poetry II moves so 

quietly that when we wake up 

after the first overnight sailing, 

I suspiciously pull open our 

cabin curtains to check we really 

have travelled to Arles. 

Nicknamed the ‘Little Rome 

of Gaul’, the city is packed with 

heritage from the time of the 

Roman Empire.

Food for 

thought 

DOG-LOVERS are being 

urged to take care when 

it comes to firing up the 

Barbie after warnings 

of the dangers al-fresco 

cooking poses to man’s 

best friend. 

The warning comes after 

a British Veterinary Association 

(BVA) survey of its 

members revealed a quarter 

of them had had treated pets 

for injuries caused by barbecues 

last summer. 

The most common barbecue 

injuries were a result 

of pets eating corn cobs, followed 

closely by damage to 

the mouth or internal injuries 

from kebab skewers and 

cooked bones. 

Vets also reported treating 

dogs for burns received 

from eating hot food off the 

grill or touching the barbecue 

or hot coals. 

In one case, a dog required 

surgery to remove obstruction 

caused by cooked corn 

on the cob and the metal 

skewers used to hold it. 

Another vet reported seeing 

two wooden skewer ingestion 

cases last summer, 

one of them a result of barbecue 

remains left behind in 

a public park. 

One vet said: “Owners 

still think corn on the cob is 

‘natural’ so it can’t cause issues, 

but I have seen worse 

gut reactions to corn on the 

cobs than to pointy toys, 

cocktail picks or remote controls.” 

Several vets also reported 

seeing cases of gastrointestinal 

upset or pancreatitis 

caused by pets being fed one 

greasy sausage too many. 

In one extreme case, a 

puppy died from inhalation 

pneumonia after it tried to 

swallow a burger but ended 

up inhaling it instead. 

And a nine-year-old English 

Setter’s scavenging 

during a barbecue led to 

her needing surgery last 

summer. Vets discovered 

16-centimetre kebab skewer 

protruding through her abdominal 

wall. She made a 

complete recovery. 

BVA junior vice president 

Daniella Dos Santos said: 

“Dogs are well known scavengers 

and will eat anything 

they think is a tasty morsel. 

“Corn itself is not poisonous 

to dogs, but a cob can 

cause an obstruction which 

can have devastating effects 

on the digestive system, 

such as intestinal rupture. 

“If an owner has any concerns 

that their dog has 

eaten something it should 

not have done, we’d advise 

contacting a local vet immediately. 

“We’d also urge anyone 

having a barbecue to keep 

other greasy meats, kebab 

skewers and bones well out 

of reach of inquisitive pets, 

as these can cause serious 

injury or illness that often 

requires medical treatment 

or even surgery. 

“If you’re having a barbecue 

in a public space like a 

park, please clean up any 

leftover food and skewers to 

make sure other dogs don’t 

accidentally swallow them.”

Zara boss in White 

House move

sources. 

Mr Ortega has been expanding 

his property interest in recent 

years, built on the success

Slowdown in 

house price 

growth 

HOUSE prices in Spain rose 

by three per cent on average 

in the second quarter 

of 2019, new figures have 

revealed. 

That compares to four per 

cent in the previous quarter 

and an increase of 5.8 per 

cent in the final quarter of 

2018 – figures which highlight 

a continuing slowdown 

in house price growth. 

The figures come from the 

latest local market report 

published by Tinsa, one of 

the largest independent property 

valuation companies in 

Spain. Its quarterly figures 

are much anticipated by market 

watchers and investors. 

According to the report, the 



slowdown is most noticeable 

in the city of Barcelona where 

“after years of significant 

rises” housing is now only 1.6 

per cent more expensive than 

it was 12 months ago. 

The Spanish housing mar- 

ket had been in decline from 

2008 to 2015 before its return 

to growth in the first quarter 

of 2016. 

It ended last year strongly 

with a 10 per cent increase in 

sales compared to 2017. 

Average prices in Spain 

have increased over 11 consecutive 

quarters, although 

Tinsa experts describe the 

latest rise as “practically insignificant.” 

According to the report: 

“Prices have accumulated 

a rise of 12.8 per cent since 

their post-crisis minimum, 

and now stand at 34.1 per 

cent below the highest 

reached in 2007”. 

Among the largest provincial 

capitals, only Valencia 

saw average price rises of 

more than 10 per cent in the 

last quarter, although Palma 

de Mallorca, Zaragoza and 

Seville saw hikes of more 

than eight per cent. 

And just three regions – 

Navarra, Aragon and Comunidad 

de Madrid – showed 

price rises in excess of five per 

cent in annual terms. 

The average time taken 

to sell a property in Spain, 

which relates the supply of 

property on the market to 

the rate of sales, stood at 8.2 

months. 

Another set of figures, this 

time from the government’s 

central statistics unit, also 

reported a nine per cent fall 

in registered housing sales in 

June, compared to the same 

month in 2018. 

The figures follow an earlier 

report by international 

property experts Knight 

Frank, which looking forward 

to the rest of 2019, concluded: 

“There is expected to be a stabilisation 

in demand and in 

house prices.” 

Analysts at Caixabank 

take the same stance. They 

believe the Spanish housing 

market is now entering a 

“more mature phase” which 

is highlighted by a weakening 

in growth in both demand 

and prices. 

In a recent report it said: 

“The factors which support 

the expansion of the housing 

market continue evolving 

positively but are losing dynamism.” 

Its experts added that the 

supply of new housing continues 

to “grow vigorously”, 

especially in areas of Spain 

with the highest demand. 

And they added: “Moderation 

should not be interpreted 

as a sign of weakness 

in the sector, but rather as a 

normalisation towards more 

sustainable growth rates following 

the strong growth 

experienced during the recovery.” 

LIFE IN A CASTLE 


Spain as a country has a magnificent selection 

of strange yet beautiful buildings 

that you can’t find anywhere else in the 

world. 

From masías in Catalunya and palaces 

in Andalucia to pazo mansions in Asturias, 

these houses also have such extraordinary 

features as castle towers with battlements 

on them, or Moorish arches and decorations.

a numb neck, according to research

A Wiltshire man, who took part in this year’s bogsnorkelling 

competition, has been hailed a champion 

once again, but failed to beat his world record. 

Bog-snorkelling was invented in the Welsh town of 

Llanwrtyd Wells in 1976. 

It involves competitors swimming through a waterfilled 

trench in a peat bog and attracts people come from 

all over the world. 

The current world champion and world record holder 

is Neil Rutter, who achieved a time of one minute and 

18.82 seconds in the 2018 championships. 

He won again this year in Wales, but the 34-year-old, 

from Swindon, came in at one minute and 21 seconds.

GREAT DETECTION 

The wonderfully-written TV show Detectorists 

showed how nerdy such hobbiests can 

be, but a couple have had the last laugh 

when they discovered a five million pound 

treasure trove. 

Adam Staples and Lisa Grace, 42, made their 

once-in-a-lifetime discovery while out metal detecting 

together in Somerset back in January. 

They discovered 2,571 silver coins that date 

back a thousand years, and are from the time of 

King Harold II, aka Harold Godwinson, who was 

the last crowned Anglo-Saxon king of England 

and who died in the Battle of Hastings by an arrow 

through the eye. 

He was only king for seven months so coins 

from the period of his reign are incredibly rare. 

The couple handed over their find to the British 

Museum and any proceeds they earn from 

them will be split with the land owner. 

Over the last seven months the museum has 

been cataloguing and assessing the coins which 

were unveiled to the public this week. 

Detecting therefore has quickly lost the nerdy 

label!

The first thing I ever won as a kid 

was a goldfish at a fair in Manchester, 

which my dad then carefully 

brought home in a plastic bag, 

ahead of getting a bowl. 

Over fifty years ago, that didn’t seem 

cruel, but things have rightly changed, 

with a Welsh pet shop worker wanting

launched a petition to the Welsh Assembly,

who win fish do not know how to care 

for them. 

The Welsh Government expects to 

launch a consultation on animal ex- 

hibit licensing before the end of the

Fish cannot be given away as prizes 

in England and Wales to a person aged 

under 16 who is unaccompanied by an 

adult. 

Some councils in England have 

banned it altogether, but none in Wales 

has done as yet. 

Ms Homer, who is confident of getting 

the 5,000 signatures her petition 

needs to be debated by Welsh Assembly 

members, said she is concerned 

about the well-being of many fish that 

are won. 

The 23-year-old said people come 

into her pet shop “swinging the fish 

around in a bag” and asking to buy a 

tank. 

“They’re never aware that the fish 

is going to grow huge, and they need a 

proper filtration system for it, medications,” 

she said. 

She’s absolutely correct and this sort 

of prize-giving really ought to be totally 

banned...period! 

BEN’S BURGER BINGE

you’d be hard pushed to find a more bitter 

one than the one between the Gallagher 

brothers, that’s been simmering along on 

medium heat for the past decade. 

Yes, it’s been ten years, since Noel, 

walked out on Oasis, effectively finishing 

the band off after an eighteen-year 

career at the top of the charts. 

Since then, the brothers have been 

locked in a bitter feud, and have made no 

secret of it either and that doesn’t look 

set to change any time soon. 

Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on

I remember Mykonos, which I first 

visited back in the early eighties 

on a Greek Island hopping trip, as 

a fantastic, slightly arty, very gay 

friendly, cosmopolitan hideaway, 

which although not as cheap as some 

of its neighbouring islands, was still 

affordable for backpackers. 

Skip forward thirty-five years and that 

tranquil piece of paradise, sits firmly at 

the top of the celebrity holiday charts, 

with eye watering prices to match.

steak in one of the island’s tavernas, I 

don’t know whether I’m more shocked 

about the price of the meat, or the fact 

the gobshite Mancunian actually goes 

on holiday to Mykonos. 

Look at the items on the bill and tell 

significant anniversary by the DJ, the 

singer, 46, said: “I know. Shame on him. 

I wonder where he is in the world. I bet 

he’s hiding in a cupboard somewhere in a 

really dark room.” 

“Mate, you can’t believe it? I can’t believe 

it, mate. All was good in the world back 

then. 

“Ten years ago, all was good in the world, 

and now it’s all went, you know… But I 

think we’re doing alright again, so it’s all 

good in the world.” 

Not taking sides, but I must say I prefer 

Noel’s new stuff with High Flying Birds, 

than Liam’s, but that’s just me. 

I’ll just have 

an espresso 

me honestly whether Hatton could tell 

the difference between a 490€ bottle 

of Dom Perignon, or a bottle of Tesco 

Prosecco ….. and as for paying 920€ for 

a steak? Don’t even go there!

BURY BURIED 

Bury’s expulsion from the English Football 

League is a “tragedy”, says Sports

Officials from Paris St-Germain and 

Barcelona met in Paris on Tuesday to 

discuss a possible deal for Neymar to 

return to the La Liga champions. 

Both clubs said the talks were “positive” 

but there is “still lots of work to do”. 

Neymar, 27, joined PSG from Barcelona 

in 2017 for a world record fee of 222m 

euros, with Barca said to be offering 

170m euros to be paid after a year’s loan. 

The loan cost would be at least 35m 

euros, though they may offer players to 

reduce the cash payment as negotiations 

continue. 

The Catalan press, following leaks 

from the club, suggested Neymar was 

pushing for the deal to go through, and 

wants to return to the Nou Camp rather 

than a move to Real Madrid or Juventus.
