The tennis and pickleball clubs in 

Kaslo have joined forces under the 

banner of Kaslo Racquet Club. To 

celebrate the newly formed combined

Creative writing program instructors Leesa Dean (left) 

and Almeda Glenn Miller will be offering a pair of insightful 

and inspiring courses in the fall semester. 

Course focuses on results for writers 

Writing a book can be a lonely endeavour. That’s why 

this fall, a Selkirk College second-year creative writing 

course will focus on manuscript development. Open to 

both full-time and community learners, writers will have 

the opportunity to share their books-in-progress with 

peers and receive professional feedback from course 

instructor, writer and editor Leesa Dean. 

“I wish a course like this had existed when I was finishing 

my first book,” says Dean, author of the critically 

acclaimed short story collection Waiting for the Cyclone. 

“I started writing it in a Master’s program, but once that 

was finished, I found it difficult to continue. Without a 

community of peers, deadlines and editors to read my 

work, I found about a thousand other things to do with 

my time.” 

Students will meet every second Thursday for two hours 

in either Nelson or Castlegar and the rest of the course 

takes place online. The model was designed to maximize 

writing time and appeal to regional writers who may otherwise 

be deterred by weekly or bi-weekly travel. 

From September 5 to December 12, students enrolled 

in Creative Writing 200: Manuscript Development 

(CWRT 200) will be immersed in a supportive community 

of writers, all with a common goal – finish their 

book. Course readings, lively discussions, seminars with 

local and visiting writers and one-on-one coaching sessions 

with the instructor are all part of the course. 

Dean is also instructing Creative Writing 100: Studies 

in Writing (CWRT 100) for the fall semester. Students 

can learn how to liven up characters, write better poetry 

and share unique life experiences with others through the 

written word. A Wednesday evening course (6 pm to 9 

pm) at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus, there is no experience 

necessary and it is open to all full-time students and 

community learners. The CWRT 100 course is also available 

at the Castlegar Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays 

(2:30 pm to 3:50 pm) and taught by veteran instructor 

and author Almeda Glenn Miller. 

Tuition for both courses includes registration for the 

Stone’s Throw Writer’s Weekend at the Mir Centre for 

Peace in Castlegar on Saturday, October 26. For more

Why do some of us accept risks 

to help others? What compels us to 

lend a helping hand? In August 2014 

when the West African Ebola epidemic 

was spinning out of control, 

our speaker, Dr. Bruce Reeder, wrestled 

with the decision of whether 

or not to join the fight against the 

disease. He reasoned with his wife, 

Sheila: “If not me, who? If not now, 

when? I had the skills and they were 

needed. I went to Liberia with Médecins 

Sans Frontières.” 

At the age of 22, halfway through medical school, Dr. 

Reeder volunteered for a summer at a clinic in the poorest 

part of town in Kingston, Jamaica, setting his trajectory 

toward the field of global health and humanitarianism. To 

date Dr. Reeder has 45 years of experience in Canada and 

abroad, at times in volatile and unsafe situations. Among 

his many accomplishments Dr. Reeder has front line experience 

working with Doctors Without Borders in Liberia, 

on the Ebola front, in Kyrgyzstan on the control of drugresistant 

tuberculosis and HIV and AIDS, in the Democratic 

Republic of Congo and Central African Republic on 

the establishment of surveillance and response systems for 

epidemic diseases. 

Dr. Reeder will give a thought-provoking presentation 

on the meaning of social responsibility, accountability 

and humanitarianism. Proceeds will be split between the 

Grandmothers Campaign, an initiative of the Stephen Lewis 

Foundation supporting African grandmothers raising their

Stigma – Words matter 

Getting “clean.” “Junkie.” “Addict.” “Dirty” needles. 

The language we use to refer to people with substance use 

disorders can elicit many negative stereotypes. 

Research shows many people with substance use challenges 

have also experienced trauma and violence, making 

them vulnerable and putting them at further risk of selfstigma 

by internalizing the negative messages they hear all 

around them. 

Language can also have serious negative impacts on the 

family and friends of those with a substance use disorder, 

or those lost to overdose. Stigma is a major barrier preventing 

people from getting well. When we use stigmatizing language, 

we prevent people from reaching out for help. This 

applies to the person with a substance use disorder, but also 

to their loved ones. The shame caused also drives people to 

use alone, putting them at increased risk of harm. 

Research about the impact of stigma has demonstrated 

that although people who use drugs alone understand the 

risks of a fatal overdose, the shame of coming forward and 

seeking help is felt so strongly that they choose to hide their 

drug use. Some people also feel stigma about carrying a 

naloxone kit. The stigma continues if a person is receiving 

methadone or Suboxone with the sense that ‘you are 

treating a drug with a drug’. In summary, some people feel 

stigmatized for using drugs, stigmatized for trying 

to reduce the risk of overdose, and stigmatized for 

seeking treatment. 

Substance use disorders are more highly stigmatized 

than any other health condition. This is largely 

due to the misinformed notion that addiction is 

some form of moral failing. In a report available on 

TowardTheHeart.com, BC Centre for Disease Control 

researchers outline the stigmatizing language 

often used to describe substance use. 

It encourages language that is person-first (‘person 

who uses opioids’ rather than ‘addict’) emphasizes 

the medical nature of substance use disorders 

(‘person experiencing problems with substance 

use’ rather than ‘drug abuser’ or ‘junkie’) and promotes 

recovery (‘person experiencing barriers to 

accessing service’ rather than ‘unmotivated’ or 

‘non-compliant’.) 

I encourage you to think about the language you 

use and how that might impact someone living with 

a substance use disorder. Think about how that language 

would sound to a mother who just lost a son, 

or someone grieving the loss of their best friend. 

The overdose crisis continues – in 2018, one life 

was lost every two hours in Canada. It can happen to 

anyone. It’s important that we reduce stigma around 

people who use drugs and ensure that everyone has 

access to the health-care services they need, where 

and when they need them. For more information

within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using their 

Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options. 

Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional performing 

soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and 

delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a 

large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accommodate 

at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of 

Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process 

and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment 

facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria 

are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible 

for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope 

This September marks the 39th anniversary of Terry Fox’s 

Marathon of Hope. Hundreds of thousands of people will 

remember this young Canadian’s audacious effort by uniting 

from coast to coast to coast for the Annual Terry Fox Run on 

Sunday, September 15. 

The longevity of the run and the cancer research legacy 

inspired by Terry’s run is a remarkable reflection of Canada’s 

respect for a man who gave us an indelible example of what 

it means to persevere. With over 10,000 fundraising events 

taking place nationwide, it is clear that Canadians have every 

intention to see Terry’s dream through to fulfillment. 

“I know it can be a busy time of year but there is no better 

feeling that to come together with family and friends, 

in your own community, for a great Canadian fall tradition 

that, quite simply, changes lives for the better,” says Terry Fox 

Foundation executive director Britt Andersen. 

Since Terry ran his Marathon of Hope in 1980, Canadians 

have raised over $750 million for cancer research. This money 

is invested into projects with the greatest potential impact 

for patients. One such project is called Terry Fox PROFYLE, 

which focuses on hard to treat cancers for youth. This project 

and others like it, use the principles of precision medicine 

and big data in a collaborative pan-Canadian approach in an 

effort to give kids with hard to treat cancers another chance.

Boil water advisory for 

Village of Kaslo 

Kaslo’s public works crew will be replacing a major 

component of the water system at PRV (Pressure Reducing 

Valve) station #3 next week, which will require draining 

parts of the system. 

The work is scheduled to start at 2 am on Wednesday, 

September 4, and will take 4 to 6 hours. The southwest 

area of Upper Kaslo, including the school and hospital, 

and around Kaslo Bay to Rainbow Drive, will be without 

water during the valve replacement. The fire department 

and property managers with fire systems will be notified. 

Lower Kaslo will have water service via a diversion 

through PRV station #5, starting Wednesday, September 4. 

Following BC Interior Health requirements, the Village 

will go on a boil water advisory because draining the part 

of the system around PRV station 3 introduces air in the 

pipes and the potential for contamination. The advisory 

will be lifted after two successive, acceptable water tests, 

which we anticipate will be received by September 12, if 

not earlier. 

Residents in areas where the water mains were drained 

may notice air in the pipes and fluctuating water pressure 

after the water is turned back on until all of the air is bled 

from the system. 

The Village will inform affected commercial, institutional 

and multi-residential properties, advertising the 

alert in Pennywise, posting information around the Village, 

updates on Facebook and our website.

Spawning channel open house 

You’re invited to the Meadow Creek spawning channel 

open house on Saturday, September 7 from 10 am to 

2 pm. Talk to biologists, learn more about Kokanee, the 

Kootenay Lake Nutrient Restoration Program and how to 

coexist with grizzly bears. 

The Meadow Creek spawning channel is four kilometers 

west of Meadow Creek at the north end of Kootenay 

Lake. Follow Highway 31 from Kaslo to Meadow Creek, 

then look for the signs. 

This free, family event is hosted by the FWCP in partnership 

with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural 

Resource Operations and Rural Development. For more 

information about the open house, please call 250-352-

The spawning channel is open daily during spawning 

season from 10 am to 2 pm. If there are too many bears in 

the area, the channel may be closed to the public.

Restoring Native Ecosystems 

CKISS has been working on a restoration project at Summit 

Lake Provincial Park since the summer of 2017, when 

hard working summer students mechanically removed invasive 

burdock at the park. Removal continued in 2018 when 

Nakusp Elementary School grade five and six students 

came to help beat back the burdock. Both years CKISS 

staff and volunteers planted a variety native species that 

are thriving today. We look forward to working with BC 

parks and community groups to continue this restoration endeavor.

Where: Kaslo Seniors Hall 

We have detected Douglas Fir beetle on 

the Wardner face above Kaslo. This area 

has been subject to increasing centres 

of root rot, resulting in stressed Douglas 

Fir. The pathogen weakens the trees 

and attracts the beetle, which burrows 

under the bark and kills the tree over 

the next season. 

The forest composition in this area is damage left by bark beetles 

predominantly Douglas Fir, which raises 

the risk level for disease due to the complex interaction 

between the root rot and the beetle and therefore the 

speed of spread. 

In the 2016 Community Wildfire Protection Plan the 

Wardner hillside was designated as a High Risk Fuel Type. 

We are planning to address the beetle, root rot and forest 

mortality and thus the heightened wildfire risk in close 

proximity to the Village of Kaslo, commencing this fall and 

throughout 2020, and are looking for your input.
