WORKERS COMP NEWS WORKERS COMP NEWS Acquisition On July 8, 2019, it was announced that Sedgwick, the parent company of CompManagement and CompManagement Health Systems, will acquire York – including subsidiaries CareWorks Comp and CareWorks of Ohio. The acquisition will be finalized later this year when the transaction is complete, following regulatory approvals. At this time, there is no expectation of merging CareWorks Comp and CompManagement and both companies will remain separate. CareWorks Comp will continue to deliver best-in-class claims management to ACCO and PHCC members, proven cost containment strategies, competitive refund programs, safety best practices and other services through the dedication of their talented associates in Ohio. BWC Proposing 88% Rebate of 2017 Policy Year Premiums Back to Ohio Employers Ohio Governor DeWine and BWC Administrator McCloud have proposed rebating $1.5 billion dollars back to Ohio employers on their 2017 Policy Year premiums following strong returns on the agency’s investments. This will be the sixth premium rebate from the BWC since 2013. Administrator McCloud will present the proposal to the Ohio BWC’s Board of Directors and a vote will be determined on June 28th. New Policy Year Started July 1, 2019 By now, you should have received your Ohio BWC Premium Estimation Notice explaining what your estimated payroll and premium will be for the Policy Year 7/1/2019 to 6/30/2020. CareWorks Comp highly suggests that you review this notice in detail and confirm if the estimated payroll numbers the BWC is projecting match what you are projecting for your company. If you are expecting your payroll to change significantly for the 2019 Policy Year (either up or down), we suggest you contact the Ohio BWC to adjust those numbers accordingly. This will ensure a more manageable True Up in the summer of 2020. Employee Termination – Concerns Beyond an Unemployment Claim In sticky situations, one of an employer’s biggest fears when letting an employee go is whether the employee will file (and win) a lawsuit against them. ACCO FEATURED MEMBER SPOTLIGHT TIM WOLFE ACCO member Tim “Gordie” Wolfe is the third generation to work in the family business, Wolfe & Sons Heating and Cooling in Columbus. Wolfe & Sons has been servicing Columbus and the surrounding communities since 1973, focusing on residential and light commercial HVAC installation and service. They are back to back winners of the 2018 and 2019 BEST Heating & Cooling Contractor in Columbus. Tim’s grandfather, the late John H. Wolfe Sr., started the business in his garage. Tim’s dad, John “Tink” Wolfe, oversees the business and assures daily operations run smoothly. Tim’s brother, John H. Wolfe Jr., leads the sales department, while Tim supervises the install crews, marketing decisions, and runs sales and service calls as well. Tim has become the “go to guy for job complications that arise and most importantly he strives to keep customers 100% satisfied. “My father worked alongside my grandfather from the beginning and he has told me stories of the long nights and weekends his father worked to keep the business going to support my grandmother, Luella, and their five children. His hard work taught me how to survive in the industry and it’s gotten Wolfe & Sons where we are today,” Tim said. The Wolfe Family Tim’s indoctrination into the world of HVAC came at an early age when he accompanied his father on weekend jobs. “About the only thing they could trust me doing was taping duct board seams with foil tape and I’m pretty sure they had to retape them after I left,” he said. “But I always knew I wanted to work at Wolfe & Sons.” DOWNTURNS AND GROWTH SPURTS After high school, Tim continued his HVAC education learning the installation process at Wolfe & Sons. But during a downturn in business, his father had to make a hard choice and let Tim go. “I understood that other employees had kids to feed and mortgages to pay, so I was OK with that. I moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, and got hired by a HVAC company there where I saw my progress evolve as an installer,” he said. TIM BECAME THE DEPARTMENT SUPERVISOR AND ALSO TOOK OVER THE MARKETING. “I’VE HAD 20% GAINS EVERY YEAR SINCE,” HE SAID. “WE’VE GROWN AND MINIMIZED OVER THE YEARS BUT ARE ON THE UPSURGE WITH 25 EMPLOYEES.” “About a year later, my dad called me, asking if I’d come home and be a part of the family business again. It was hard leaving Wilmington, but I knew my best future was in Columbus with Wolfe & Sons. I brought back helpful tricks and tools of the trade that our installers are still using today. I went from a 16-yearold who couldn’t cut a 4 x 10 air supply hole straight in the floor to someone who seemed to work in the industry his whole life. There’s nothing I can’t accomplish or no task too big for me to handle. When I put my mind to something it gets done and done the right way.” Back at Wolfe & Sons, Tim worked on new build and custom homes for several years until the economy crashed. He then moved to the replacement department. Six years later in 2011, Tim became the department supervisor and also took over the marketing. “I’ve had 20% gains every year since,” he said. “We’ve grown and minimized over the years but are on the upsurge with 25 employees.” VOLUME 2019, ISSUE 3 • OHIO PHC CONTRACTOR 17
