Now we’re faced yet again with saying goodbye to friends and relatives, with hopeful boasts of returning again in three years. There’s also the upcoming long flights with Vittoria. We’ve wisely included a fourday stopover in Brisbane to catch up with people and re-adjust our body clocks to the Antipodean cycle. To be honest, due to the magic of international time zones, newspaper deadlines and my inability to write these while chasing my daughter around a metal tube with wings 30,000ft above the ground – we’re likely already in Australia as you read this. We’ve managed to fit quite a bit into our last week, including taking Vittoria on her first train rides. Over three days we forged a rough triangle around northwest Italy to visit some of Laura’s relatives who live in Turin and Pisa (obligatory Leaning Tower photo time). The trip was particularly special as it was the first time said relatives had met Laura, let alone Vittoria. Vittoria was great with them, OPEN SPACE: Vittoria at Piazza San Marco in Venice. and like all her family here, she warmed to them quickly and was soon rushing to them for cuddles after only knowing them for a matter of hours. Fortunately my wee darling even behaved herself on the up to four-hour train journeys, giving us the confidence needed to take her to Venice on Friday. I was fully against letting her out of her pram there as the headline “Kiwi toddler rescued from Venetian canal” practically writes itself. It also goes along VITTORIA & Matt with the phrase “father’s decisions questioned”. Lucky for me, Vittoria seemed to agree, and was content to watch her parents sweat to death under the baking sun while we carried her pram over the city’s billion or so canal bridges on the two-hour expedition to Piazza San Marco. She was so relaxed that she fell asleep briefly as we arrived in the famous square. However, against my better judgement, we let her out there (after she woke up) so she could take a run about the place I asked her mother to marry me. In another fit of good luck, grapes worked as a bribe to get her back in for the return trek and the only downside of the adventure was a scrapped knee. Brian Johnston responds to last week’s Bay Harbour News article about road works being undertaken as part of the Sumner Village Master Plan, which is causing havoc for businesses There is much wrong with the Sumner Village upgrade. I do not wish to be negative, but the bus stop should have stayed where it was. The buses could have pulled to the left. It only stops for one minute every hour and passengers would be able to see their bus coming. Instead, the bus stop will be outside the dairy, around the corner, where passengers cannot see the bus coming and it will take valuable parking away from dairy. Motorists will be tempted to park on the bus stop, which possibly could be okay if one knows the timetable. They have replaced the old tar footpaths with hot mix. They look dreadful and cannot be lifted and replaced for any maintenance. All of the footpaths should have been paved right along to Clink Restaurant and Bar (29 Wakefield Ave). There are pavers on the road, and tar on the footpath . . . what? Parking has been removed, replaced with raised hot mix and it serves no purpose . . . not aesthetic. Street lights are out of line and it does not look right, which is not pleasing to the eye and there is an unsatisfactory explanation for this. Also, the explanation the area will be more pedestrian-friendly is debatable. I am all for making Sumner attractive.
