costumes andsets is allpart of preparing<br />
for aproduction, saysDale HartleyBrown.<br />
The Hartley School of PerformingArts<br />
has been reusing and recycling costumes,<br />
sets and props, visiting secondhandshops<br />
and retrievingscraps aheadofthis year’s<br />
junior production.<br />
‘‘We could lookonlineand findthat<br />
whatever we buy isn’t going to be quite<br />
right, so it’sbettertomake it ourselves.’’<br />
She saysinthe leadup to any<br />
production, visitsare made to local<br />
secondhand shops,CreativeJunk in<br />
Christchurch and the Southbrook<br />
Resource Recovery Park, as well as going<br />
through old costumes and sets to come up<br />
with new ideas.<br />
‘‘It’s alot of fun to lookatthings and<br />
thinkabout what else we can make out of<br />
it. It’s the fun thing about aproduction; we<br />
create anew world out of whatever we can<br />
find.’’<br />

production, The HappyPrince,cup cakes<br />
have been made out of foam fromthe<br />
insides of old cushions, while golden<br />
leaves, river reeds and costumes for<br />
swallow birds, Egyptian townsfolkand<br />
‘‘frost dancers’’ arebeing created.<br />
Asewing bee was held recently at<br />
Rangiora craft shopHandzon, which is<br />
ownedbyaparent whosechild attends the<br />
school.<br />
‘‘It was alovelynight sitting around<br />
creating things,’’ Dalesays.<br />
The Happy Prince is being directed by<br />
Elliott Andrews, who is directing ashow by<br />
himself for the first time.<br />
It features acast of 100 children aged<br />
from 4to11, with several youngsters<br />
appearing in theirfirst show.<br />
The Happy Prince will be performed at<br />
the RangioraTown Hall on Saturday,<br />
<strong>September</strong>28, with shows at 11amand<br />
2pm. Tickets are on saleatTownHall<br />
