A YOUNG Mt Pleasant 

para-athlete has successfully 

swum 16km in memory of 

his late twin sister. Last year 

17-year-old Nico Wildbore 

tragically lost his sister Bethany 

to suspected suicide. 

Every kilometre he swam 

marked a year that Bethany 

lived. 

His swim coincided with 

World Suicide Prevention Day 

last week, and Nico was in 

the pool for nearly nine hours 

straight to fight the stigma 

around discussing mental 

health and suicide.

LYTTELTON residents have 

come up with a list of ways to 

stop cruise ship visitors heading 

straight into the city. 

The ideas will be presented 

to the newly-appointed Banks 

Peninsula Community Board 

after the October local body 

elections. 

About 70 residents supported 

the suggestions which aim to 

boost Lyttelton’s economy when 

a new cruise ship berth opens in 

October next year. 

The possible initiatives include 

more markets, information 

booklets for visitors on arrival, 

walking tours, showcasing the 

area’s Maori and Antarctic 

connections and bus tours 

around the harbour. 

There was also discussion 

about a cruise ship levy to go 

towards fundraising for the 

Lyttelton Museum. 

Lyttelton Port Company’s new 

berth will allow cruise ships 

which cater for more than 5000 

passengers and 2000 staff to 

dock.

ALL POWER to young Nico Wildbore who 

completed an amazing swim for a fantastic 

cause (page 1). 

The promising para swimmer swam nearly 

nine hours and 16km to help fight the stigma 

tied to discussing mental health and suicide. 

Why? Because it was in memory of his twin sister Bethany who 

died of suspected suicide. 

She was 16, and each kilometre swam marked a year of her life. 

Nico’s swim also coincided with World Suicide Prevention Day. 

Thinking about Bethany helped push him through the 16km, 

Nico said. 

His mother Keiran said he showed immense “strength of character.” 

“He not only finished the 16km but he finished with a smile on 

his face. I was immensely proud of him. It was awesome,” she said.

said he is in “full agreement with 

the sentiments expressed in the 

letter.” 

Mr Latham has been outspoken 

about the need to involve 

the public on matters which 

are of significant interest to the 

community. 

“From my perspective, there 

is no good reason as to why 

the public or media should 

have been excluded from this 

seminar. The issues have been 

well publicised with respect to 

the crime cameras and there is a 

genuine interest by the public in 

this matter,” he said. 

“We are a community board 

advocating for the public, we are 

not a branch of the government 

security bureau so let’s keep 

things in perspective and involve 

our community.’

to business people and road users and create a more 

user friendly accessible city.

the surf club president for 11 

years and has been recognised 

with life membership. 

Mr Christensen and Mr Jones 

were appointed following the 

death of New Zealand Order of 

Merit member David Cox and 

the retirement of long-standing 

trustee John Brown. 

Founded 26 years ago, 

the foundation has been the 

beneficiary of many donations 

and bequests by residents who 

have wanted to leave their mark 

on the community. 

Trustee Jim Keegan said the 

commercial and administration 

skills of Mr Christensen and 

Mr Jones, along with their long 

and close association with their 

communities, will make them 

“very valuable” to the foundation.

The fanciful floral and faunal paintings of Kathryn 

Furniss and Wendy Matenga feature in the September/ 

October exhibition at Little River Gallery. Vast, sweeping 

skies featuring soaring gannets evoke feelings of flight 

and freedom, while framed in foliage against lush 

backgrounds native birds flourish, sitting silently, inviting 

you into their story. Vessels from the past convey a 

retrospective view of a woman in the home. Required to 

work with nature to make things flourish, hands ask the 

question “are we offering or taking?’ 

A self-taught artist, Kathryn Furniss draws her inspiration 

from pacific landscapes and NZ’s native flora and fauna. 

Painting in both acrylic and ink, her style involves the 

building up of many textured layers, beginning with 

loose abstract washes, her final brush strokes are 

more controlled and detailed. Kathryn has successfully 

exhibited throughout New Zealand and internationally for 

14 years. Her body of work in this exhibition incorporates 

painterly skies, moody landscapes and the native flora 

and fauna that she’s best known for.

AKAROA residents will 

soon have their say on how 

the town’s wastewater is 

treated. 

Three options are being 

prepared by the city council 

for consultation before 

the end of this year. 

Akaroa’s treated 

wastewater is currently 

discharged into the harbour, 

but the city council 

has made a commitment to 

explore alternatives.

said city council staff have 

investigated a range of 

methods suggested by the 

community. 

“These included 

irrigation to land, an 

ocean outfall, piping the 

wastewater elsewhere, 

deep-bore injection and 

managed aquifer recharge,” 

he said. 

“It’s time now to 

bring investigations to 

a close and consult the 

community on the most 

effective options available. 

“We hope to share these 

options with everyone 

in Christchurch and 

Banks Peninsula after the 

elections so that the new 

TARGET: Options are being explored to replace the 

need to discharge treated wastewater into Akaroa 

Harbour.

water,” Mr Moore said. 

“In light of recent 

central government moves 

to strengthen drinking 

water standards, it is 

not a risk we are willing 

to take – protecting the 

community’s drinking 

water is of paramount 

importance.”

the competition will continue to 

grow and reach more students 

in the years to come. 

“It is such a thrill to see the 

students excited about their 

work, their parents proud to 

see their son or daughter’s work 

in a gallery and the teachers’ 

enthusiasm and support of their 

students,” she said.

Support for surf 

life saving club 


THERE HAS been a wave of 

support for the rebuild of the 

Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving 

Club. 

The city council received 72 

submissions on a proposal to 

lease the current site to the club 

during a month-long consultation 

period from July 30. 

The lease would enable them 

to build a new $3m pavilion following 

the demolition of the old, 

earthquake-damaged clubrooms. 

Sixty-six submissions were in 

clear support of the proposed 

lease and licence, three provided 

feedback and suggestions and 

three were opposed. 

Reasons for opposition included 

size of the proposed building, 

access limitations and concerns 

over its location. 

All concerns were investigated 

and responded to by city council 

staff. 

The Linwood-Central-Heathcote 

Community Board is set to 

decide whether to grant the lease 

at a meeting today. 

Resource consent has been 

approved for the designs at the 

site, which means if the club is 

not granted the licence it will 

need to go back through the 

resource consent process and 

potentially alter the designs.

Thieves target garden items in Woolston 


IT APPEARS there are thieves 

in Woolston with a green thumb 

and sticky fingers. 

A concrete birdbath, several 

planter boxes and urns have 

gone missing from properties in 

the suburb over the past month. 

Resident Freya Oakley posted 

on the Woolston Community 

United page recently, warning 

residents to keep an eye out 

for thieves stealing garden 

equipment from the front of 

properties. She said both her 

neighbours on Wildberry St 

have had items stolen from their 

gardens. 

“[The planter boxes] are very 

heavy so at least two people are 

working together,” the post 

said. 

Miss Oakley told Bay Harbour 

News a parcel also went missing 

from her doorstep. 

Another resident commented 

on her post: “It could be the 

same b*****ds that took my 

neighbour’s concrete birdbath. 

Hers went missing one night and 

it’s so heavy.”

IT’S A Saturday morning – 

deckchairs are out, the sun is 

shining, the smell of cut grass is 

mixed with freshly brewed coffee 

and you can hear the sound 

of kids having fun and parents 

catching up. 

This is what junior cricket is 

all about, and at the Sumner 

Cricket Club, we have another 

great season planned. 

Kane Williamson and his 

Black Caps were brilliant 

ambassadors of the game at the 

recent Cricket World Cup in 

England. The team came within 

one run of winning world 

cricket’s biggest prize, and in 

spite of only missing out on the 

trophy by an obscure ruling, 

they carried themselves with 

great dignity and humility. 

They showed what good 

sportsmanship really is and this 

“spirit of cricket” is something 

we work hard to convey to our 

junior players at the club. 

The Sumner Cricket Club 

provides teams and coaching 

for boys and girls from fiveyears-old 

through to 13.

some fantastic growth over the 

last six years. Last season the 

club fielded 14 junior teams, up

Recent changes to the game 

formats mean that matches are 

shorter and all kids are kept 

more engaged over the course 

of the game. How the game is 

structured means all kids have 

an equal opportunity to bat, 

bowl and field. 

New players are welcomed 

to the club every year and this 

season and on September 20 at 

4.30pm we will hold the first of 

our first “Sumner Superstars 

Have-a-go” sessions. 

These sessions are a way 

for players new to the game 

to come on down and try out 

cricket for the first time (gamebased 

skill sessions) and also for 

our established players to come 

down, catch up with their mates 

and have a game of park cricket 

at the home of the Sumner 

Cricket Club, at St Leonards 

Square. 

It’s going to be a great 

summer of cricket for all fans 

with the big three of England, 

India and Australia all touring 

and playing matches against 

the Black Caps at Hagley Oval.

AN ANIMATED tree displayed 

at Mt Pleasant School is 

beginning to flourish. 

“Mahuri,” which stands for 

sapling, is an initiative which is 

helping the school to grow its 

resources with help from the 

community. 

Parents, pupils, teachers and 

residents are able to donate or 

buy products which will fill a 

new hall, four classrooms and 

a discovery hub once a $3.2 

million rebuild is complete by 

March 2020. 

Principal Chris Nord said the 

school has been without a hall 

and other key learning spaces 

since many its buildings were 

damaged in the February 22, 

2011, earthquake. 

He said while the Ministry 

of Education has been “great” 

with funding the rebuild, it does 

not cover the purchase of other 

learning tools. 

With Mahuri, people are able 

to donate a range of items – such 

as chairs, desks, bookshelves,

Swim for mental health

Nico said thinking about his 

sister helped push him to meet 

his goal. 

He was born with a type of 

cerebral palsy called hemiplegia, 

and undertook the swim with 

limited mobility in his right arm 

and leg. 

Between 9.30am and 6.30pm, 

Nico had only three 20min 

breaks. 

It is estimated with the 

number of donations on the day 

and with further funds to come 

through, he will raise more than 

$10,000 for the New Zealand 

Mental Health Foundation. 

Nico said he was feeling tired 

at the end of the challenge but 

happy he had finished what he 

started and he had “so much 

support.” 

The swim was held at the 

Waitaha Swim Club, which is 

based out of the Canterbury 

Swim School, in Hornby.

“He not only finished the 16km 

but he finished with a smile on 

his face. I was immensely proud

Ms Horne said the swim club 

had an instructor swimming 

alongside Nico all day who 

encouraged him every step of the 

way. 

His friends jumped in the pool 

to support him too, she said. 

“There was always somebody 

swimming alongside him in the 

other lane, which helped him 

along,” she said. 

Ms Horne said she was 

“flabbergasted” at how well Nico 

went but the exhaustion “really 

hit him” in the evening.

WOW, DROPPING a casual 

20-odd deg C in day-to-day 

temperature is unfriendly. 

Luckily for Vittoria, she’s barely 

seemed to notice the change 

from T-shirts and dresses to 

trackies and cardies. 

As you might have guessed 

from the weather whinge, we’re 

back from our Italian holiday 

and getting back into the normal 

routine. 

Before we jumped back into 

our delightful South Island 

freshness, we stopped in 

Brisbane to ease through the 

jetlag. 

Vittoria was again a complete 

professional on the flights, 

spending most of her time asleep 

in my arms. I had worried that, 

with us arriving into Australia 

at night, that would mean her 

rhythms would be stuffed. 

But again, she smashed it. 

Straight to sleep when we got 

to her aunty’s and back into a 

normal rhythm without trouble. 

I, on the other hand, became a 

big sudden-onset-nap fan for a 

few days. 

As a kind of final act of the 

holiday, we took Vittoria to the 

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. As 

well as touching a koala, she also 

surprised her mother and I by 

being brave enough to hand feed 

and pat a kangaroo.

back to work and it will be the 

first time it’s been just me and 

bubs for a long time, so furry 

distractions might be just the

The Lyttelton Rugby Club hosted Norths U12’s for the 

54th annual challenge over the weekend of 6 to 8th 

September 2019, match was very even affair with both 

teams playing skilful rugby. Norths won the match 26 

- 25, and Lyttelton looking forward to their Challenge 

for the Challenge Shield next weekend 13th to 15th 

September 2019. The team arrived in Wellington 

Friday 13th September to a warm welcome and rain. 

The team was billeted to the Norths families for the 

weekend. Saturday we woke to rain and a Wellington 

breeze. The game was played in wet conditions, once 

again both tema very evenly matched and playing 

skilful rugby under the conditions. Lyttelton held 

a slight lead of 7 points to 5 at half time, but shortly 

after half time Norths took the lead of 12 - 7. With 11 

minutes to go in the match Lyttelton scored a great try 

and a goal kicker was successful in kicking the goal into 

a strong northerly breeze to put Lyttelton ahead 14 - 12. 

Lyttelton held this lead to full time thru strong defence 

and great determination and lifted the Challenge Shield 

for the first time in 6 years.

beautiful ornate styles to the modern

To complement the artwork and the 

frame, Malcolm has mounts in a wide 

range of colours, and he is happy to advise 

customers on the right frame and mount to 

set off the artwork. 

That artwork may not necessarily be a 

two-dimensional piece – Malcolm also 

frames memorabilia such as medals or 

other precious objects a customer may 

want to display on the wall. 

He carries out all the framing on the 

premises, with most jobs completed within 

two weeks, as long as the moulding is 

available from the manufacturer, he says.

Feisty Kia Cerato deserves GT badge

HISTORICALLY, hot 

hatchbacks had three doors – take 

Peugeot’s 205 GTi, Volkwagen’s 

GTi and Toyota’s Corolla GT, for 

example. 

That’s all changed, most of the 

affordable fun cars which fit into 

that category now have four doors 

– or five – as is the case of Kia’s 

Cerato GT. 

The Cerato range entered a 

new generation early this year. It 

consists of six models, two sedans 

and four hatchbacks. Amidst the 

line-up is what Kia label GT-Line, 

and I drove that 2-litre car in 

June. 

Not to be confused with GT- 

Line is another sporty variant 

within the range, and it is badged 

simply GT. 

Although specification within 

the two nameplates is similar, 

the GT differs markedly from 

GT-Line in terms of driveline 

mechanicals; instead of the 

naturally-aspirated 2-litre engine, 

the GT gets a turbocharged unit 

of 1.6-litre. Although the Cerato 

GT is all-new, the engine is pretty 

much a carryover, it was first seen 

a few years ago in some Hyundai 

product and in Kia’s own Soul, 

Koup and Pro_cee’d GT. 

This engine has all of the ingredients 

which make the Cerato 

local 

sport 

From Kaikoura, 

to Christchurch, 

to Ashburton, 

we have it 

covered 

GT a true hot hatch. It is rated 

by Kia at 150kW (6000rpm), 

and with 265Nm available all of 

the way between 1500rpm and 

4500rpm it has a broad spread of 

power through the rev range. If 

you take into account that the entire 

car weighs in at just 1385kg, 

then there is a solid power-toweight 

advantage. 

What’s more, the engine is one 

of the sweetest you could find in 

a car of this type, it is an absolute 

honey in terms of delivery, there 

is no raucous sound, just a tantalising 

throb out of the exhaust 

pipes, it sings delightfully as it 

heads towards the red line which, 

incidentally, is a lively 6500rpm. 

It works the top end willingly, 

yet, as I’ve mentioned, the torque 

spread is its greatest asset, it 

works the bottom end forcefully 

and without lag. 

I’d really like to drive this car 

with manual gearbox, a six-speed 

manual has been hooked to this 

engine before, but I’m picking 

that’s never going to be an option

The Cerato GT wouldn’t really 

deserve the GT label if it didn’t 

have the figures to back it up. 

Kia claims a 7.7sec time to reach 

100km/h from a standstill, while 

by my stopwatch it will lunge 

through a highway overtake 

(80-120km/h) in 4.8sec. These 

compare well to its competition, 

when I evaluated the Peugeot 

308 GT recently, its power and 

performance figures were almost 

identical. 

In recent years motor vehicle 

manufacturers have also used 

turbocharging as a technique to 

enhance fuel efficiency. I’m not

evaluation car was recording a 

5.5l/100km (51mpg) instantaneous 

figure with the engine turning 

over at a lively 2100rpm. 

When I took the car back to the 

dealership, the average readout 

was sitting at 8l/100km (35mpg). 

By my reckoning, these are good 

figures given I used the turbo 

boost often just to feel the surge. 

I took the test car west to the 

Malvern Hills, the roads were 

drenched through rain so there 

wasn’t much of a chance to test 

chassis control, but the fully independent 

set-up in the Cerato is 

true GT material. Bear in mind it 

is the only model in the range that 

has the advanced set-up, others 

have a more simplistic rear torsion 

beam suspension. The spring 

and damper rates are a little firm, 

but you’d want nothing less. 

There is just enough compliance 

to absorb road bumps, but 

the benefit is the way the suspension 

controls body movement 

and gives the tyres the best 

possible chance of maintaining 

grip. Incidentally, the 225/40 x 

18in Michelin Pilot Sport rubber 

is perfect for this car, the ride is 

quiet and steerage wonderfully 

direct. 

Kia has things pretty much its 

own way in the affordable midsize 

GT market. Sure, there are 

a couple of other models which 

sit in that segment – Peugeot’s 

GT, as mentioned, VW’s Polo GT 

and Suzuki’s Swift, and at $41,990 

the Cerato GT is keenly priced 

against the Euros. 

It’s also a car that is far from 

selfish, it will easily cater as a 

serious five-seater, and because of 

its practicality it’s easy to see why 

the five-door layout makes it a 

tempting proposition.

I’m proud of Christchurch and it is an enormous privilege to 

represent you as Mayor. 

Our city is emerging from unprecedented challenges to become 

one of the most dynamic in New Zealand. 

Much has been accomplished but the job is not yet done. 

Disaster brought tragedy but at the same time has created a unique 

opportunity to reimagine Christchurch. 

We have laid the foundation for a modern, sustainable and resilient 

21st Century city – together we can build a legacy for generations 

to come. 

We need to get the chlorine out of the water and keep it out. We 

need to keep investing in the central city and the east, and we also 

need to get rates increases down. 

We need to keep the momentum going; progress must continue. 

I want Christchurch to be known for its fantastic lifestyle, as well as 

being the innovation and creativity capital of New Zealand. 

I have the experience, I have the commitment and I have the 

teambuilding skills to deliver on what I promise. 

I’m looking forward to serving Christchurch again and using my 

experience to drive this vision across the line – I believe that’s

My immediate priorities: 

Water 

Investment in our infrastructure will deliver pure water safely to your home. 

I will fight Government-imposed mandatory chlorination. 

Rates 

I will bring rates rises down while ensuring continued infrastructure 

investment and balancing council debt and inflation. 

Central City 

A vibrant city centre is essential. Having secured $300m for Christchurch, 

the stadium will be a multi-use facility. 

I will continue to back the developers leading the way. 

Sustainability 

I am committed to reducing our city’s carbon footprint, and helping 

communities to prepare for the impacts of climate change. 

Eastern Alliance 

An alliance of contractors will deliver a fully integrated programme of works 

across the east, fixing roads, footpaths and pipes, and building stopbanks.
