A YOUNG Mt Pleasant
para-athlete has successfully
swum 16km in memory of
his late twin sister. Last year
17-year-old Nico Wildbore
tragically lost his sister Bethany
to suspected suicide.
Every kilometre he swam
marked a year that Bethany
lived.
His swim coincided with
World Suicide Prevention Day
last week, and Nico was in
the pool for nearly nine hours
straight to fight the stigma
around discussing mental
health and suicide.
Lyttelton
• By Jess Gibson
LYTTELTON residents have
come up with a list of ways to
stop cruise ship visitors heading
straight into the city.
The ideas will be presented
to the newly-appointed Banks
Peninsula Community Board
after the October local body
elections.
About 70 residents supported
the suggestions which aim to
boost Lyttelton’s economy when
a new cruise ship berth opens in
October next year.
The possible initiatives include
more markets, information
booklets for visitors on arrival,
walking tours, showcasing the
area’s Maori and Antarctic
connections and bus tours
around the harbour.
There was also discussion
about a cruise ship levy to go
towards fundraising for the
Lyttelton Museum.
Lyttelton Port Company’s new
berth will allow cruise ships
which cater for more than 5000
passengers and 2000 staff to
dock.
ALL POWER to young Nico Wildbore who
completed an amazing swim for a fantastic
cause (page 1).
The promising para swimmer swam nearly
nine hours and 16km to help fight the stigma
tied to discussing mental health and suicide.
Why? Because it was in memory of his twin sister Bethany who
died of suspected suicide.
She was 16, and each kilometre swam marked a year of her life.
Nico’s swim also coincided with World Suicide Prevention Day.
Thinking about Bethany helped push him through the 16km,
Nico said.
His mother Keiran said he showed immense “strength of character.”
“He not only finished the 16km but he finished with a smile on
his face. I was immensely proud of him. It was awesome,” she said.
Crime camera transparency questioned
Council
criticised for
excluding
public from
meeting
RATE INCREASES ARE NOT SUSTAINABLE
þ Rates are projected to rise by more than 52% by 2028.
Over the last three years, average rate rises have hit 5.25%.
And that’s not factoring in the compounding effect of those
increases.
• By Jess Gibson
THE CITY council has been
criticised over a decision to
exclude the public from a
meeting about Sumner’s crime
cameras.
A seminar was held on Monday
to provide the Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board with advice from police
and city council staff on the
process of installing crime prevention
cameras.
However, due to the level of
public interest in the process,
community board acting chairman
Jake McLellan questioned
the transparency of the meeting.
Prior to the public-excluded
discussion on crime cameras,
the meeting was open to the
public for two items – the Bay
Area Skate and Scooter Park
designs and the Heathcote Expressway.
Mr McLellan called the deci-
CONFUSION: Jake
McLellan has called
out the city council
for excluding the
public from a
meeting on
Sumner’s crime
cameras.
sion to make the crime cameras
a private matter “completely and
utterly wrong.”
He said nothing discussed at
the meeting needed to exclude
the public.
Head of community support,
governance and partnerships
John Filsell said the meeting
excluded the public as it was
“a confidential staff briefing to
elected members” and because
there was no decision-making.
There has been ongoing confusion
as to who can fund the
$20,000 cameras, as communityfunded
equipment is not an
option.
Board members were meant to
REPAIR THE ROADS AND FOOTPATHS
Eight years on from the quakes we still have endless
roadworks, questionable sewage systems and fresh
water that is compromised.
I SUPPORT AN INTEGRATED WATER STRATEGY
Water supply, waste water, storm water and water infrastructure
are critically important. Our waterways and coastal water form a
major part of the landscape and lives of the community.
A CHANGE OF CULTURE IS REQUIRED
Ratepayers want transparency and accountability without
resorting to Official Information Act procedures. The Council
has been branded as “the most secretive in the country.”
decide on a recommendation to
decline all funding towards the
cameras in July – the amount
requested by Safer Sumner was
$16,187.
However, the application was
withdrawn due to confusion
over how the item was expected
to meet the discretionary response
fund criteria.
Mr Filsell said the information
will be shared next week
with Safer Sumner, which has
been trying to get the cameras
installed since 2017.
Mr McLellan sent a letter to
city council staff on Sunday
raising concerns prior to the
meeting.
Darrell
LATHAM
Forü Council
I WILL ASK THE
HARD QUESTIONS
REVIEW ALL COUNCIL EXPENDITURE
þ Income and expenditure needs to be reviewed
with urgency. The Council needs to comprehensively
review how it manages assets to avoid soaring debt.
INNER CITY DEVELOPMENT
þ Central City residential developments are creating
masses of on street car parking. These developments
require off street parking areas.
þ
þ
“Given this item already has
come to the community board
I’m unsure why this would now
be removed from the public view
for a period of time,” it said.
“This appears to be setting
us up for a position where we
would be acting on advice not
made public, and so I want to get
this right at the outset.”
Mr McLellan has not received
a written response to the letter.
Community board member
Darrel Latham, who has been
pushing for the crime cameras,
said he is in “full agreement with
the sentiments expressed in the
letter.”
Mr Latham has been outspoken
about the need to involve
the public on matters which
are of significant interest to the
community.
“From my perspective, there
is no good reason as to why
the public or media should
have been excluded from this
seminar. The issues have been
well publicised with respect to
the crime cameras and there is a
genuine interest by the public in
this matter,” he said.
“We are a community board
advocating for the public, we are
not a branch of the government
security bureau so let’s keep
things in perspective and involve
our community.’
CITY ACCESS, PARKING AND CONGESTION
A smart city is an accessible city. The Council must listen
to business people and road users and create a more
user friendly accessible city.
CLIMATE CHANGE
We need individual and collective action to minimise
climate change. Mitigation and adaptive management
strategies are part of that discussion.
Concerns have been raised
over the possibility cruise ship
tourists will not stay in the
port town and will instead go
directly into the central city.
But Lyttelton Information
Centre manager Ruth Targus
said she hopes the feedback
will be acted on by the
new community board
before the next cruise
ship season begins.
“Obviously everybody
goes through Akaroa
because they wait for
a boat, whereas in
Lyttelton there’s buses
so they don’t. We don’t
want to make it crazy
we just want to make
sure we’re not missing out.”
SuperValue owner Rob
de Thier said he is glad the
conversation has started now so
a good outcome can be achieved
for Lyttelton by next October.
Mr de Thier was the Lyttelton
Harbour Business Association
chairman until last week and
said many other businesses are
“excited” to gain momentum
from more visitors.
“There have been no negative
conversations about it within
the association,” he said.
At the consultation meeting,
a list of concerns was also
discussed, which will be
presented to the community
board.
They included potential
environmental issues, such
as noise, pollution, stirring of
sediment, fuel-use, erosion,
waste and wind
resistance.
Other concerns
include congestion,
pressure on businesses,
disruption to the
community, a need for
wi-fi, a lack of signage
and stretched toilet
facilities,.
Mrs Targus hopes the
information provided
will help people or groups to
be delegated to roles which
would help to minimise these
concerns.
Meanwhile, Akaroa
Ratepayers and Residents
Association chairman Harry
Stronach said Akaroa is as
“unready for this year’s cruise
ship season as it was last year.”
He said co-operation from the
city council and other bodies
involved is still lacking.
“They have gone very quiet
lately,” he said.
Former Olympian’s new role
• By Jess Gibson
IN 1976, John Christensen
made New Zealand proud when
he helped the men’s hockey
team bring home gold from the
Montreal Olympics.
Now the Redcliffs resident is
hoping to make his community
proud, as a new trustee of
the Sumner
Mr Christensen said.
Representing New Zealand
at three Olympic Games is
Christensen’s belt.
After attending Redcliffs
Mr Jones has lived in Sumner
for many years and has
contributed to the development
of the Taylors Mistake Surf Life
The business consultant was
the surf club president for 11
Flight and Flourish
Kathryn Furniss & Wendy Matenga
21 September – 15 October 2019
‘May You Flourish’
original painting by
Kathryn Furniss
The fanciful floral and faunal paintings of Kathryn
Furniss and Wendy Matenga feature in the September/
October exhibition at Little River Gallery. Vast, sweeping
skies featuring soaring gannets evoke feelings of flight
and freedom, while framed in foliage against lush
backgrounds native birds flourish, sitting silently, inviting
you into their story. Vessels from the past convey a
retrospective view of a woman in the home. Required to
work with nature to make things flourish, hands ask the
question “are we offering or taking?’
A self-taught artist, Kathryn Furniss draws her inspiration
from pacific landscapes and NZ’s native flora and fauna.
Painting in both acrylic and ink, her style involves the
building up of many textured layers, beginning with
loose abstract washes, her final brush strokes are
more controlled and detailed. Kathryn has successfully
exhibited throughout New Zealand and internationally for
14 years. Her body of work in this exhibition incorporates
painterly skies, moody landscapes and the native flora
and fauna that she’s best known for.
Little River Gallery open 7 days, Main Road, Akaroa Highway.
‘Just Right’
original painting by
Wendy Matenga
Also a self-taught artist, Wendy Matenga’s works
always start with her lovingly capturing the light on
the delicate petals of flowers with her camera, she
then likes to push the boundaries of floristry with her
paintbrush. Wendy seeks to portray the emotional
vibrancy flowers offer, when displayed in the home or
gifted by a loved one. Lessons from nature; soar beyond
the ordinary, flourish from within.
Both Wendy and Kathryn reside in Nelson, NZ.
HAVE YOUR SAY: How should Akaroa’s wastewater be disposed
of? Email your views to jess.gibson@starmedia.kiwi
Feedback to be sought over
Akaroa’s wastewater options
AKAROA residents will
soon have their say on how
the town’s wastewater is
treated.
Three options are being
prepared by the city council
for consultation before
the end of this year.
Akaroa’s treated
wastewater is currently
discharged into the harbour,
but the city council
has made a commitment to
explore alternatives.
Three waters and waste
acting head John Moore
said city council staff have
investigated a range of
methods suggested by the
community.
“These included
irrigation to land, an
ocean outfall, piping the
wastewater elsewhere,
deep-bore injection and
managed aquifer recharge,”
he said.
“It’s time now to
bring investigations to
a close and consult the
community on the most
effective options available.
“We hope to share these
options with everyone
in Christchurch and
Banks Peninsula after the
elections so that the new
TARGET: Options are being explored to replace the
need to discharge treated wastewater into Akaroa
Harbour.
city council can make a
decision early in 2020,” he
said.
It was suggested that
highly-treated wastewater
could be fed into Akaroa’s
aquifers, or groundwater,
as an alternative to the
harbour discharge.
However, Mr Moore
said investigations have
been discontinued because
managed aquifer recharge
with treated wastewater
would pose a risk to the
Akaroa’s drinking water
supply.
“If treated wastewater
is injected into Akaroa’s
groundwater, there’s a risk
it could enter the bores
used to supply drinking
water,” Mr Moore said.
“In light of recent
central government moves
to strengthen drinking
water standards, it is
not a risk we are willing
to take – protecting the
community’s drinking
water is of paramount
importance.”
Let us help you gain confidence,
personal growth and self realisation
through public speaking
In this world we are all seeking our purpose. What
is your purpose? I found my purpose when I joined
Toastmasters. A place where I was supported,
nurtured and empowered to grow beyond my wildest
imagination. A place where I even gained leadership
skills.
What is Toastmasters you may ask? Toastmasters is a
vehicle for personal growth and self realisation to the
possibilities that could be you. Toastmasters is where
you develop confidence through public speaking.
Some of you may say that you loath or are scared of
speaking. Believe me, you are not alone and there is
a genuine phobia called “Glossophobia”. As with all
phobias, this fear can be tamed through a carefully
planned education programme which will give you the
skills to help those fearful butterflies fly in formation
and ease the anxiety.
I belong to an incredible local group called “Bay
Harbour Toastmasters Club”. This is an extremely
supportive group who are nurturing and professional.
While each member comes from a different profession,
each is the same in that they joined to build a better
version of themselves.
This wonderful organisation has shown many
members that Toastmasters can awaken many talents.
Come along to our...
SPECIAL OPEN MEETINGS
Wednesday 25th September and 9th October,
6.30pm at 25 Canterbury Street, Lyttelton and see
how we can help you to become a better you.
Bay Harbour members say that…
• Toastmasters to me has been a wonderful
journey and learning environment, a means
of extending myself and improving, through
education and evaluation by my peers.
- John Marks, Retired
• Toastmasters makes me more confident with
work challenges, like the pitch I had to give to
the executive management team last week!
I also feel more confident in social situations
when not accompanied by friends or family.
– Shona Galbraith, Occupational Therapist
• Being a Toastmaster has helped me make
many friends, and when I became the 1st
New Zealander in 20 years to be on the
Toastmasters Board of Directors I found that
my friends were now global.
This was the third year
Wynands was impressed with
the entries.
“The skill level of entries is
of a very high calibre and it
really is a pleasure to see the
techniques and subject content
of each entry,” she said.
“The event has been designed
to give year 13 students in
Canterbury the opportunity to
exhibit their works in a professional
gallery.”
Support for surf
life saving club
• By Jess Gibson
THERE HAS been a wave of
support for the rebuild of the
Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving
Club.
The city council received 72
submissions on a proposal to
lease the current site to the club
during a month-long consultation
period from July 30.
The lease would enable them
to build a new $3m pavilion following
the demolition of the old,
earthquake-damaged clubrooms.
Sixty-six submissions were in
clear support of the proposed
lease and licence, three provided
feedback and suggestions and
three were opposed.
Reasons for opposition included
size of the proposed building,
access limitations and concerns
over its location.
All concerns were investigated
and responded to by city council
staff.
The Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board is set to
decide whether to grant the lease
at a meeting today.
Resource consent has been
approved for the designs at the
site, which means if the club is
not granted the licence it will
need to go back through the
resource consent process and
potentially alter the designs.
Thieves target garden items in Woolston
• By Jess Gibson
IT APPEARS there are thieves
in Woolston with a green thumb
and sticky fingers.
A concrete birdbath, several
planter boxes and urns have
gone missing from properties in
the suburb over the past month.
Resident Freya Oakley posted
on the Woolston Community
United page recently, warning
residents to keep an eye out
for thieves stealing garden
equipment from the front of
properties. She said both her
neighbours on Wildberry St
have had items stolen from their
gardens.
“[The planter boxes] are very
heavy so at least two people are
working together,” the post
said.
Miss Oakley told Bay Harbour
News a parcel also went missing
from her doorstep.
Another resident commented
on her post: “It could be the
same b*****ds that took my
neighbour’s concrete birdbath.
Hers went missing one night and
it’s so heavy.”
•HAVE YOUR SAY: If you
have had anything stolen
from your Woolston garden
recently, or have information
about the thefts, email
Dig out the whites – cricket
season is about to start
Sumner Cricket Club junior
convener Tim Hoban writes
about the havea-go
sessions
starting on
Friday, which
will give
children the
opportunity to try out the
sport
IT’S A Saturday morning –
deckchairs are out, the sun is
shining, the smell of cut grass is
mixed with freshly brewed coffee
and you can hear the sound
of kids having fun and parents
catching up.
This is what junior cricket is
all about, and at the Sumner
Cricket Club, we have another
great season planned.
Kane Williamson and his
Black Caps were brilliant
ambassadors of the game at the
recent Cricket World Cup in
England. The team came within
one run of winning world
cricket’s biggest prize, and in
spite of only missing out on the
trophy by an obscure ruling,
they carried themselves with
great dignity and humility.
They showed what good
sportsmanship really is and this
“spirit of cricket” is something
we work hard to convey to our
junior players at the club.
The Sumner Cricket Club
provides teams and coaching
for boys and girls from fiveyears-old
through to 13.
There are opportunities to
play on a Saturday morning
KEEN: Juniors ready for the Sumner Superstars Have-a-go
sessions.
along with mid-week training
sessions. As a club, we have had
some fantastic growth over the
last six years. Last season the
club fielded 14 junior teams, up
from six teams in 2013. The club
also fielded four senior teams in
2018 and 2019.
Recent changes to the game
formats mean that matches are
shorter and all kids are kept
more engaged over the course
of the game. How the game is
structured means all kids have
an equal opportunity to bat,
bowl and field.
New players are welcomed
to the club every year and this
season and on September 20 at
4.30pm we will hold the first of
our first “Sumner Superstars
Have-a-go” sessions.
These sessions are a way
for players new to the game
to come on down and try out
cricket for the first time (gamebased
skill sessions) and also for
our established players to come
down, catch up with their mates
and have a game of park cricket
at the home of the Sumner
Cricket Club, at St Leonards
Square.
It’s going to be a great
summer of cricket for all fans
with the big three of England,
India and Australia all touring
and playing matches against
the Black Caps at Hagley Oval.
Bring it on.
AN ANIMATED tree displayed
at Mt Pleasant School is
beginning to flourish.
“Mahuri,” which stands for
sapling, is an initiative which is
helping the school to grow its
resources with help from the
community.
Parents, pupils, teachers and
residents are able to donate or
buy products which will fill a
new hall, four classrooms and
a discovery hub once a $3.2
million rebuild is complete by
March 2020.
Principal Chris Nord said the
school has been without a hall
and other key learning spaces
since many its buildings were
damaged in the February 22,
2011, earthquake.
He said while the Ministry
of Education has been “great”
with funding the rebuild, it does
not cover the purchase of other
learning tools.
With Mahuri, people are able
to donate a range of items – such
as chairs, desks, bookshelves,
GROWING: Mt
Pleasant School
principal Chris
which features a
by this year’s
featured artist, Jo
Ogier.
Exhibition to benefit school
projectors, or a $10 tree to be
planted at the school.
For every contribution, a
sticker is placed on the tree to
track Mahuri’s progress, similar
to a thermometer fundraising
scheme.
This year’s Mt Pleasant Art Exhibition
on Friday and Saturday
will be the vehicle to get the initiative
out into the community.
The exhibition, which has been
the school’s main fundraiser for
many years, will see all money
raised going towards Mahuri.
The featured artist will be
Sumner resident Jo Ogier. She
is one of 50 artists who will
display their works at the Mt
Pleasant Community Centre, 3
McCormacks Bay Rd, over the
weekend – many are from the
Swim for mental health
•From page 1
Nico said thinking about his
sister helped push him to meet
his goal.
He was born with a type of
cerebral palsy called hemiplegia,
and undertook the swim with
limited mobility in his right arm
and leg.
Between 9.30am and 6.30pm,
Nico had only three 20min
breaks.
It is estimated with the
number of donations on the day
and with further funds to come
through, he will raise more than
$10,000 for the New Zealand
Mental Health Foundation.
Nico said he was feeling tired
at the end of the challenge but
happy he had finished what he
started and he had “so much
support.”
The swim was held at the
Waitaha Swim Club, which is
based out of the Canterbury
Swim School, in Hornby.
Nico’s mother Keiran Horne
said he showed immense
“strength of character.”
“He not only finished the 16km
but he finished with a smile on
his face. I was immensely proud
of him. It was awesome,” she said.
Ms Horne said the swim club
had an instructor swimming
alongside Nico all day who
encouraged him every step of the
way.
His friends jumped in the pool
to support him too, she said.
“There was always somebody
swimming alongside him in the
other lane, which helped him
along,” she said.
Ms Horne said she was
“flabbergasted” at how well Nico
went but the exhaustion “really
hit him” in the evening.
Home and back to reality
WOW, DROPPING a casual
20-odd deg C in day-to-day
temperature is unfriendly.
Luckily for Vittoria, she’s barely
seemed to notice the change
from T-shirts and dresses to
trackies and cardies.
As you might have guessed
from the weather whinge, we’re
back from our Italian holiday
and getting back into the normal
routine.
Before we jumped back into
our delightful South Island
freshness, we stopped in
Brisbane to ease through the
jetlag.
Vittoria was again a complete
professional on the flights,
spending most of her time asleep
in my arms. I had worried that,
with us arriving into Australia
at night, that would mean her
rhythms would be stuffed.
But again, she smashed it.
Straight to sleep when we got
to her aunty’s and back into a
normal rhythm without trouble.
I, on the other hand, became a
big sudden-onset-nap fan for a
few days.
As a kind of final act of the
holiday, we took Vittoria to the
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. As
well as touching a koala, she also
surprised her mother and I by
being brave enough to hand feed
and pat a kangaroo.
Her wee face would break out
in a huge smile as it nibbled the
pellet food from her outstretched
palm. She’d then reach back for
more or lean in for a stroke of
neck fur like she’d been raised
from Steve Irwin himself.
I can’t wait to see if her new
confident attitude towards
animals will translate to feeding
the previously “terrifying” deer at
Willowbank.
This week may even be the
perfect time to try, as Laura is
back to work and it will be the
first time it’s been just me and
bubs for a long time, so furry
distractions might be just the
thing.
I’m a little worried about
how she’s going to go with just
dad about for most of the day
after seeing how close she’s got
with Laura while we’ve been
away.
Not that I’m saying that’s bad,
that’s been beautiful to see. I’m
just worried I alone might be
a little lame for her until she is
used to it again.
Fingers crossed for fine
weather and lots of entertaining
outdoor distraction during the
readjustment period.
TAKEAWAY
Brendan McIlraith (Coach)
The Lyttelton Rugby Club hosted Norths U12’s for the
54th annual challenge over the weekend of 6 to 8th
September 2019, match was very even affair with both
teams playing skilful rugby. Norths won the match 26
- 25, and Lyttelton looking forward to their Challenge
for the Challenge Shield next weekend 13th to 15th
September 2019. The team arrived in Wellington
Friday 13th September to a warm welcome and rain.
The team was billeted to the Norths families for the
weekend. Saturday we woke to rain and a Wellington
breeze. The game was played in wet conditions, once
again both tema very evenly matched and playing
skilful rugby under the conditions. Lyttelton held
a slight lead of 7 points to 5 at half time, but shortly
after half time Norths took the lead of 12 - 7. With 11
minutes to go in the match Lyttelton scored a great try
and a goal kicker was successful in kicking the goal into
a strong northerly breeze to put Lyttelton ahead 14 - 12.
Lyttelton held this lead to full time thru strong defence
and great determination and lifted the Challenge Shield
for the first time in 6 years.
Sea & Land is a unique Lyttelton gallery
where the focus is on aviation, automotive,
of unusual items to choose from here…
plus they also offer a professional picture
framing service.
Air, Sea & Land in London Street, also
incorporates Lyttelton Picture Framing
and offers high-quality picture framing at
realistic prices. Malcolm Carne has owned
and operated the business for 20 years and
has the qualification to undertake all types
of framing – he is a Guild Commended
Framer (GCF), which is a British
qualification in conservation framing.
“Conservation framing is about making
sure the artwork is preserved inside the
frame, including fitting UV glass to prevent
sunlight damaging it,” Malcolm says.
He stocks an extensive selection of
mouldings to suit all types of artwork
whether prints or originals, ranging from
beautiful ornate styles to the modern
Scandinavian style of frame.
To complement the artwork and the
frame, Malcolm has mounts in a wide
range of colours, and he is happy to advise
customers on the right frame and mount to
set off the artwork.
That artwork may not necessarily be a
two-dimensional piece – Malcolm also
frames memorabilia such as medals or
other precious objects a customer may
want to display on the wall.
He carries out all the framing on the
premises, with most jobs completed within
two weeks, as long as the moulding is
available from the manufacturer, he says.
Air, Sea & Land is located at 32 London
Street, Lyttelton and is open Monday to
Friday from 9am-5pm and Saturday from
9am-1pm.
Feisty Kia Cerato deserves GT badge
We’re for
Motoring
Ross Kiddie
HISTORICALLY, hot
hatchbacks had three doors – take
Peugeot’s 205 GTi, Volkwagen’s
GTi and Toyota’s Corolla GT, for
example.
That’s all changed, most of the
affordable fun cars which fit into
that category now have four doors
– or five – as is the case of Kia’s
Cerato GT.
The Cerato range entered a
new generation early this year. It
consists of six models, two sedans
and four hatchbacks. Amidst the
line-up is what Kia label GT-Line,
and I drove that 2-litre car in
June.
Not to be confused with GT-
Line is another sporty variant
within the range, and it is badged
simply GT.
Although specification within
the two nameplates is similar,
the GT differs markedly from
GT-Line in terms of driveline
mechanicals; instead of the
naturally-aspirated 2-litre engine,
the GT gets a turbocharged unit
of 1.6-litre. Although the Cerato
GT is all-new, the engine is pretty
much a carryover, it was first seen
a few years ago in some Hyundai
product and in Kia’s own Soul,
Koup and Pro_cee’d GT.
This engine has all of the ingredients
which make the Cerato
local
sport
From Kaikoura,
to Christchurch,
to Ashburton,
we have it
covered
GT a true hot hatch. It is rated
by Kia at 150kW (6000rpm),
and with 265Nm available all of
the way between 1500rpm and
4500rpm it has a broad spread of
power through the rev range. If
you take into account that the entire
car weighs in at just 1385kg,
then there is a solid power-toweight
advantage.
What’s more, the engine is one
of the sweetest you could find in
a car of this type, it is an absolute
honey in terms of delivery, there
is no raucous sound, just a tantalising
throb out of the exhaust
pipes, it sings delightfully as it
heads towards the red line which,
incidentally, is a lively 6500rpm.
It works the top end willingly,
yet, as I’ve mentioned, the torque
spread is its greatest asset, it
works the bottom end forcefully
and without lag.
I’d really like to drive this car
with manual gearbox, a six-speed
manual has been hooked to this
engine before, but I’m picking
that’s never going to be an option
in today’s automatic-focussed
market. Instead, drive is transferred
through a seven-speed dual
clutch transmission which is as
close to a manual as you’ll get to
experience these days. There are
only two pedals, so you treat it as
KIA CERATO GT: Turbocharged engine supplies true hot
hatchback performance.
an automatic. The ratios extract
well the power outputs, and shifts
are lightning fast. Paddle-shifters
allow the driver to be involved in
the gearchange process if he/she
feels the desire to do that. There
are also adjustable drive modes
which the driver can choose to set
the engine management protocols
for each type of journey.
The Cerato GT wouldn’t really
deserve the GT label if it didn’t
have the figures to back it up.
Kia claims a 7.7sec time to reach
100km/h from a standstill, while
by my stopwatch it will lunge
through a highway overtake
(80-120km/h) in 4.8sec. These
compare well to its competition,
when I evaluated the Peugeot
308 GT recently, its power and
performance figures were almost
identical.
In recent years motor vehicle
manufacturers have also used
turbocharging as a technique to
enhance fuel efficiency. I’m not
seven-speed dual clutch
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 7.7sec
• Fuel usage – 6.8l/100km
saying the high-boost set-up
in the Cerato GT is structured
for that, but as a car it still has
satisfactory fuel use stats. Kia
also claims a 6.8-litre per 100km
(41mpg) combined cycle average.
At 100km/h on the highway, the
evaluation car was recording a
5.5l/100km (51mpg) instantaneous
figure with the engine turning
over at a lively 2100rpm.
When I took the car back to the
dealership, the average readout
was sitting at 8l/100km (35mpg).
By my reckoning, these are good
figures given I used the turbo
boost often just to feel the surge.
I took the test car west to the
Malvern Hills, the roads were
drenched through rain so there
wasn’t much of a chance to test
chassis control, but the fully independent
set-up in the Cerato is
true GT material. Bear in mind it
is the only model in the range that
has the advanced set-up, others
have a more simplistic rear torsion
beam suspension. The spring
and damper rates are a little firm,
but you’d want nothing less.
There is just enough compliance
to absorb road bumps, but
the benefit is the way the suspension
controls body movement
and gives the tyres the best
possible chance of maintaining
grip. Incidentally, the 225/40 x
18in Michelin Pilot Sport rubber
is perfect for this car, the ride is
quiet and steerage wonderfully
direct.
Kia has things pretty much its
own way in the affordable midsize
GT market. Sure, there are
a couple of other models which
sit in that segment – Peugeot’s
GT, as mentioned, VW’s Polo GT
and Suzuki’s Swift, and at $41,990
the Cerato GT is keenly priced
against the Euros.
It’s also a car that is far from
selfish, it will easily cater as a
serious five-seater, and because of
its practicality it’s easy to see why
the five-door layout makes it a
tempting proposition.
BAY HARBOUR
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Let’s keep the momen
I’m proud of Christchurch and it is an enormous privilege to
represent you as Mayor.
Our city is emerging from unprecedented challenges to become
one of the most dynamic in New Zealand.
Much has been accomplished but the job is not yet done.
Disaster brought tragedy but at the same time has created a unique
opportunity to reimagine Christchurch.
We have laid the foundation for a modern, sustainable and resilient
21st Century city – together we can build a legacy for generations
to come.
We need to get the chlorine out of the water and keep it out. We
need to keep investing in the central city and the east, and we also
need to get rates increases down.
We need to keep the momentum going; progress must continue.
I want Christchurch to be known for its fantastic lifestyle, as well as
being the innovation and creativity capital of New Zealand.
I have the experience, I have the commitment and I have the
My immediate priorities:
Water
Investment in our infrastructure will deliver pure water safely to your home.
I will fight Government-imposed mandatory chlorination.
Rates
I will bring rates rises down while ensuring continued infrastructure
investment and balancing council debt and inflation.
Central City
A vibrant city centre is essential. Having secured $300m for Christchurch,
the stadium will be a multi-use facility.
I will continue to back the developers leading the way.
Sustainability
I am committed to reducing our city’s carbon footprint, and helping
communities to prepare for the impacts of climate change.
Eastern Alliance
An alliance of contractors will deliver a fully integrated programme of works
across the east, fixing roads, footpaths and pipes, and building stopbanks.
Do it once, do it right.
Best for Christchurch
