Conclusion
In summary, the IO1 report describes the conditions for a successful use of 3D printing in
European prisons. It becomes clear that so far only a few prisons in Europe have carried out
projects of a similar nature. This can be traced back to the fact that the 3D-technology is still
quite new and just recently has started to be adapted in industrial and private use. Still there
are a lot of projects in the field of 2D-Media and learning basic computer skills, which can
be used as best practices for the development of courses in 3DJail.
Regarding the prisons the structures for competence-learning courses are in place, but the
use of the Internet is usually very limited. These limitations and how they will be bridged
will be further analysed in the IO2.
The listed software for 3D printing – both on CAD and CAM – are versatile enough to support
a broad field of applications, therefore they can be used efficiently for all kind of different
approaches and needs. Thus, there are both free software without necessary Internet
connection and expensive software for professional work, giving us enough options to
tackle different levels of complexity in our teachings. Also, depending on the planned
production an individual use is possible.
The required and found competencies enable a meaningful base for the development of a
training model, the requirements of participants and trainers and how they need to be
trained. The possible professions related to 3D printing clearly show that in many areas a
long education and a high level of competence is required. In connection with the planned
certification we need to check the possibilities of a vocational training towards a
certificated and acknowledged profession or understand if we are aiming for a certification
which could increase the opportunities for training and application later in life.
