Tostada language row<br />
A SENIOR official in the<br />
Valencian government<br />
has become embroiled in<br />
a row about the local language<br />
after trying to order<br />
a tostada and ham in the<br />
city.<br />
Aurora Mora, a chief of staff<br />
in the ministry, ordered the<br />
snack in Valenciano, which<br />
the waitress didn’t speak as<br />
she was Argentinean.<br />
The owner of the establishment,<br />
Bar El Bojito,<br />
said that Ms Mora became<br />
needlessly rude and told the<br />

woman she should learn Valenciano<br />
if she was going to<br />
live in this part of the world.<br />
Despite a server being<br />
found who did speak the<br />
dialect, Ms Mora asked for<br />
a complaint form and later<br />
took to social media.<br />
However many people said<br />
she was being unreasonable,<br />
pointing out that the region<br />
officially has two languages,<br />
Castellano and Valenciano.<br />
Also, due to the multi-<br />
cultural nature of the city<br />
and the presence of Spanish<br />
visitors from outside the region,<br />
the fact is that in most<br />
commercial establishments<br />
Castellano is the language<br />
of choice.<br />

ALICANTE Council has<br />
slashed €40,000 from<br />
the firm paid to keep the<br />
city clean after they failed<br />
to carry out their duties<br />
properly in August.<br />
The council said that UTE<br />
had breached their contract<br />
by not cleaning roads properly,<br />
something determined<br />
by inspection teams. UTE’s<br />
services have caused controversy<br />
in the past, charging<br />
what was judged to be extortionate<br />
amounts for nonstandard<br />
