Your Weekend Starts Here!
DESTROYED
Here today, gone tomorrow
... the story of Richard
and Liesl Cavender
There is now a
river running
across where the
couple’s house
used to be!
A Go-fund me page was
set up at www.gofundme.
com/f/getting-rich-andliesl-back-on-their-feet
The couple are insured
but have no idea how long
it takes to get the claim processed
and paid out here in
Spain.
The house was a 100-yearold
Spanish farm house,
constructed of stone walls,
around 4ft wide, strong
solid walls. This was not
some flimsy shack or timber
framed plot.
According to the local eye
witnesses, the river broke
its bank. It’s a very deep
river of over 20 metres. The
retaining wall gave up and
some 50 gallons of water per
second spilled out. It ripped
half of the neighbour’s house
down and washed away the
Cavenders house, and anything
else that was left in its
path.
“I can’t tell you what it’s
like as we went back on
Sunday, after the evacuation
on Friday, to see our
house had gone! It was
like seeing a disaster
movie.”
“The landscape had
completely changed. I
had difficulty recognising
where my own home stood
only the day before.”
Expat homeowners
and business owners living
in Almoradi, Alicante
lost their home and
livelihood last weekend
as they witnessed the
complete destruction
overnight, after the biggest
storm for 100 years,
bringing extreme weather,
known as a Gota
Fria, hit the areas across
Eastern Spain.
Talking today, Richard
and Liesl are still in
shock, telling me that
they are walking around
like zombies.
Richard said “there are
lots and lots of wonderful
people around. 99.9% of
the people are absolutely
awesome. Being in the
technical IT industry, the
community online has
come together to help
us, lots of offers to get
my business back up and
running. I am so grateful
for all of the help.”
Election time,
once again
ANOTHER month, another
Spanish General Election,
something that has almost
seemed inevitable since the
last one, all of five months ago,
failed to see any party secure a
decisive majority.
Although the PSOE were easily
the largest single party back
in April, they failed to agree on
any alliances that could have
given them a working majority
and on Tuesday acting PM Pedro
by Simon Russell
Sanchez and other party leaders
concluded a two day meeting with
the King.
As no candidate could be agreed
on, the government is set to be dissolved
next week and there will
be an election on 10 November, a
Sunday as is usual in Spain.
Some commentators say that
there is still a slim chance of a
last minute agreement before this
PM Sanchez
and King Felipe
pictured recently
happens, with the absolute final
deadlines for this being midnight
on 23 September.
Acting premier Sanchez blamed
the right wing PP and Ciudadanos
for blocking the deal, along
with the left leaning Podemos,
with an agreement with the latter
still seen as the best chance of
breaking any deadlock.
However the smart money is on
the November election, the fourth
in as many years.

FRIDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2019 3
La Nucia going
to the dogs
In recognition of its
achievements in animal
protection, La Nucia has
been chosen to host the
third National Campus for
Animal Protection and Canine
Units, at the end of
next month.
During the prestigious
four-day congress, local police
canine units from all over
Spain, will take part in workshops,
specialist training
sessions and practical simulation
exercises, designed to
create a scenario reflecting
the needs of Animal Protection
in the technical, scientific
and professional fields.
A two-day Specialist training
course for police canine
units, including theoretical
and practical sessions, conducted
by expert trainers in
collaboration of the two large
state bodies of police canine
units, is also part of the
scheduled programme.
The event, jointly organised
by the Spanish Society
of Criminology TSU (SEcrim),
the National Union
of Chiefs of Local Police
Finance Feature
provided by...
by Andy Mansell
(Unijepol), the Spanish Association
of Public Safety
of Animal Protection (AES-
PPA) with the collaboration
of the City of La Nucía
through the departments of
Public Safety and Animal
Protection, will also include
a national awards ceremony,
where Police Canine Units,
individual dog handlers and
dogs will be commended for
their work activities.
On the final Saturday,
an exhibition starting at
12.00h, open to the general
public, designed to promote
and give a greater understanding
to the work of these
special units, will take place
at the Camilo Cano Sports
Arena, with participation
and displays given by the
finalists and award winning
dogs and handlers.
“La Nucía is a reference
in Animal Protection at the
national level, which is why
Unijepol and AESPPA have
chosen our municipality for
this complete Campus that
Jessica Gommans announced the congress details
this week
includes a Congress, training
sessions, delivery of
national distinctions and a
great exhibition in the Esportiva
City”, said Jessica
Animal Protection in the
municipality.
Are you getting the service you were
promised from your financial adviser?
Providing a high level of service
to my clients is the key to good
financial advice. I expect a
face-to-face meeting with each
and every one of my clients at
least once a year, in addition to
regular phone calls and emails.
My clients also know that their
portfolio is reviewed by me every
month, and if at any point I see
an opportunity, or something that
needs addressing, I contact them
immediately.
Whilst this will always remain a
priority for me, it seems not every
financial adviser thinks the same
way. At Chorus, more and more
clients are walking through our door
each day because they’ve either lost
contact with their adviser or they are
not happy with the level of service
they are receiving.
I should at this point explain why
so many advisers can go ‘AWOL’
after they’ve invested their client’s
savings or pensions. Despite it
being banned now in the UK, the
majority of financial advisory
companies in Spain can still take
hidden commissions when they
recommend investment funds.
This means that not only do they
often have a very small choice of
funds to choose from – sometimes
they only have this commission
agreement in place with one or
two fund houses – but they are
also effectively paid for as much
as 10 year’s work up front. At this
point the adviser simply moves
on to the next prospective client,
often neglecting a large client-base
that would benefit from ongoing
advice.
Those with financial products in
Spain need to be aware that the
very key to good financial advice is
regular reviews of client portfolios.
At Chorus we monitor every fund
our clients use on a weekly basis
(as we’re fully independent, this is
a very broad range), and we look at
every single portfolio we manage at
least every month.
This approach, combined with using
well-known, quality institutions,
and FCA regulated funds, helps
our clients achieve their investment
goals.
Financial advice is not about setting
you up for a five-year plan and then
walking away, leaving you to cross
your fingers and hope for the best. It
965 641 163
is about agreeing on financial goals,
and working together on a regular
basis to ensure they are met.
Please do not hesitate to contact
me if you are not satisfied by
the level of service or returns
you’ve received from your current
Tostada language row
A SENIOR official in the
Valencian government
has become embroiled in
a row about the local language
after trying to order
a tostada and ham in the
city.
Aurora Mora, a chief of staff
in the ministry, ordered the
snack in Valenciano, which
the waitress didn’t speak as
she was Argentinean.
The owner of the establishment,
Bar El Bojito,
said that Ms Mora became
needlessly rude and told the
by Simon Russell
woman she should learn Valenciano
if she was going to
live in this part of the world.
Despite a server being
found who did speak the
dialect, Ms Mora asked for
a complaint form and later
took to social media.
However many people said
she was being unreasonable,
pointing out that the region
officially has two languages,
Castellano and Valenciano.
Also, due to the multi-
cultural nature of the city
and the presence of Spanish
visitors from outside the region,
the fact is that in most
commercial establishments
Castellano is the language
of choice.
6 FRIDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2019
www.weekender.news
Seven dead and thousands
displaced as ferocious flooding
decimates Costa Blanca
It is the early hours of Friday
the 13th, skies fill with
intense blue white light
and the monstrous black
pendulous clouds break
open to the intense crash
of thunder.
You would be forgiven for
believing this is the opening
scene of the latest John Carpenter
blockbuster. Yet this
was a horror scene in reality.
One which has taken the ultimate
price. As the storm was
approaching, I, as many seasoned
“Ex-pats”, prepared myself,
my family and my house,
for the worst. But our fears
became the reality for many of
the Costa Blanca finest.
The Murcian Government
declared a red alert and
closed schools across the entire
area on Wednesday 11th
September, and with very
good cause as South Eastern
Spain hosted the largest
storm it has seen in nearly
150 years.
Some areas recorded record
levels of rainfall, torrential
downpours, filling rivers
to burst. The banks split
open, as thousands were
evacuated with only minutes
to spare, before cars gardens
and even houses were
by Alex Trelinski
washed away to nothing.
Thousands forced from
their homes as 300,000 hectares
of farm lands were decimated.
The military were called
into the Vega Baja area to
evacuate and save people
trapped inside their vehicles,
businesses and homes.
Over the course of the 24
hours of Friday 13th September,
houses were literally
washed from their
foundations, thousands of
cars floated along rivers of
muddy water, flood waters
trapped people on the top
floor of houses with no electricity
or communications,
as the Government of Murcia
saw its lands turned into
a disaster zone.
It was the ‘most devastating
storm since 1879, when
flooding killed over 1,000 in
Murcia and Orihuela,’
Six lives have been
claimed by the ‘Gota Fria,’
officially known as an ‘upper-level
isolated depression’
or ‘DANA.’
On the AP7 motorway
to Orihuela, cars lined the
sides of the roads, on end,
overturned, in something
which would not be out of
place in a warzone. Hundreds
of vehicles, in a long
line of destruction.
The tunnel section of the
AP7 motorway, passing
through Pilar De La Horadada,
filled with flood waters,
to the point where little more
than ducks may have passed
through. And still now, as
you read this, the water still
has not dissipated.
The Bull rings were filled
with water to the brim, creating
giant reservoirs of
muddy waters.
Tornadoes ravished lands
and danced across the
seas. One tornado pushing
through the centre of Guadamar
Del Segura, and even
tore through a school, leaving
destruction in its wake.
Six people have lost their
lives and to them we dedicate
the clean-up and rebuilding
of the Costa Blanca. To
those six and their families,
we will rebuild and make a
stronger Costa Blanca.
So far, the Costa Blanca
has responded in great fashion.
We have proven that together
we stand.
Having proudly contributed
to many charity events
over the last 5 years, I have
seen many appeal efforts and
I can tell you, in just five days,
this has been monumental.
Immediately, Big FM’s
general Manager, Richard
Sparks, began an appeal
across both Radio Stations,
Big FM and Big Radio Spain,
asking people to bring donations
to one of the drop off
points, in association with
Rojales Town Hall and the Social
Services. Within 12 hours
of the appeal, five truck loads
had been filled and delivered
to the people who most
desperately needed it.
1,500 Euros in cash had
been donated, along with
masses of clothes, food, blankets,
toiletries and necessary
tools, to begin the cleanup.
But that was only the
beginning. This flow of help
has only continued and will
continue, through the generosity,
human nature and
community spirit, as more
help continues to be brought
every day.
The Emerald Isle, Urbanización
La Florida, Dehesa
de Campoamor, Alicante,
held a charity day on Tuesday
17th September and
raised 3,700 Euros, with
Help from Home Playa Flamenca.
On Sunday 22nd, Villamartin
Plaza will hold a
massive charity day, with
Help Vega Baja, with some
huge acts, including Abba
Elite, The New Jersey Boys
Costa Blanca, and much,
much more. So far, on the
Villamartin GoFundMe
page, for the relief fund, they
have already raised nearly
5,000 Euros.
On September 23rd, there
will be an event at Flannigans,
Entre Naranjos, 12pm
until 6pm, including Al Joel,
David John Williams, Jady
Jazz and Shannon Campbell.
Also 30th September, at La
Union, La Marquesa, 12pm
until 6pm, an event including
Andy Jones, Jo Jo, Graeme
Alexander as Bowie, Debbie
H and Dean Alexander.
The struggle is real, but
together the Costa Blanca
is proving its metal. United
we stand, together we will
achieve.
Pensioner abuses cleaner
A 70 year old man has
been arrested and accused
of the sexual abuse
and illegal detention of a
cleaner who works in the
block of flats where he
lives in Valencia’s Maratim
district.
The victim was carrying
out her work and went to the
by Simon Russell
suspect’s apartment to get
clean water, something she
had done regularly in the
past.
However on this occasion
it is alleged that the man
grabbed her from behind and
started groping her breasts
and kissing her. The woman
tried to leave but the 70 year
old shut the door, although
she finally managed to get
away from him and open it
to escape.
She then ran to a friends
house, who called the police
after hearing her account of
the matter.
Double abuser
detained
by Simon Russell
A 42 year old man has been
arrested in Valencia by the
National Police accused of
sexually abusing two girls,
both aged nine.
The victims are his own
daughter and the granddaughter
of his partner, all of
who lived at the same address.
It is alleged that he carried
out the abuse when he was
alone with the girls, threatening
them with punishment if
they told anyone.
The suspect, who has no previous
police record, has been
kept in detention awaiting
charges.
Child traffickers arrested
THREE people have been
arrested in Alicante and
two in Valencia as part of
a nationwide operation
against a major criminal
gang whose alleged crimes
included the abduction of
minors.
29 people in all have been
arrested to date, three in
France 11 in Almeria and
the rest in Murcia, Tarragona,
Barcelona and Murcia
as well as those in the Valencian
Community. They were
by Simon Russell
using buses and trucks to
abduct foreign minors from
detention centres and taking
them to Belgium and France
via Almeria port.
Those arrested are believed
to be from Mali, Algeria,
Morocco and Syria and
the children trafficked were
also from these countries.
As well as the children,
they used the transportation
to smuggle hashish, tobacco
and even endangered
animals, all hidden away
in specially adapted cargo
holds.
A vehicle was stopped
recently by French police
and found to have 22 illegal
immigrants, 6 children,
33,000 euros in cash, 200
kilos of hashish and various
documentation.
Their Spanish counterparts
were then informed,
leading to the arrests last
weekend.

Wee bit of trouble
for dog owners
by Simon Russell
VALENCIA City Council
is cracking down on dog
owners who do not clean
up properly after their
pets, something still seen
as a problem in the Community’s
capital, Spain’s
third largest city.
There are 90,000 registered
pooches in the city and
the actual number is probably
far higher than that,
with their mess being one
of the main cause of complaints
from both residents
and tourists when asked
about the appearance of the
city.
The new campaign will
reinforce the fines for not
cleaning up faeces but also
remind pet owners that they
need to carry a bottle to
wash away urine.
The acidic quality of this
ruins street furniture such
as wooden benches and
stains walls, including some
of Valencia’s main historical
attractions.
People are also supposed
to use a water and detergent
mix to properly clean up faeces,
with the residue still attracting
insects and smells
in the warm weather.
IN a presentation at Pego’s
Casa de la Cultura earlier
this week, delegates from
the Ministry of Agriculture
gave an update on
the introduction of four
ospreys in the Pego-Oliva
marshlands.
The birds, one pair born
in Cadiz and the other in
the Balearic Islands, were
by Simon Russell
placed in special cages at the
start of the summer.
As they have matured
they have gradually given
more freedom amid careful
monitoring.
They are now all fully
fledged and have flown as
far as Morocco and the south
of France before returning to
their nesting grounds in this
part of the world.
The creatures will migrate
for the winter and experts
will continue to track the
birds.
Ospreys have not been
seen in this area since the
last nesting pair was spotted
in the 1970s.
Looking out
for victims
THE Valencian Communities
National Police Corps
have said that they will
provide 24 hour monitoring
for women who are
judged to be at “extreme
risk” of sexist violence in
the region.
Gabriela Bravo, the Minister
of Justice, made the
announcement last week as
by Simon Russell
also to personally consent
to the measures. If required
her and any children can be
housed for free by social or
judicial services.
Other measures include
three new specialised offices
for domestic violence
cases in Castellon, Alicante
part of a raft of plans to combat
and Elche, following on
gender violence in the
Community.
To qualify for the help a
woman will have to have confirmation
of the danger from
the judicial authority and
from the existing one in Valencia
City which has dealt
with 257 cases in the five
months since it opened, 137
of which have led to official
complaints being filed.
Home alone mum questioned
by Simon Russell
AN off duty National Police officer in the
Valencian town of Xativa alerted colleagues
after noticing a young child with
her legs sticking through the railings of a
third floor terrace, obviously in distress.
The patrol assessed that there was an extreme
danger and, after there was no reply
to their knocks on the door, managed to force
entry into the property.
They moved the unharmed child, who was
on her own in the flat, to a safe place.
Her mother returned 45 minutes later and
has provisionally been charged with child
abandonment.
World Prostate Cancer
Males who have a family
history of the disease were
entitled to the check from
the age of 40. The procedure
Mayor left
deflated
after attack
Spanish queen
accused of
copying Kate
by Simon Russell
THE authorities believe
that an incident where all
the tyres on the car of a
local mayor were slashed
was a deliberately targeted
attack.
Amparo Orts is the socialist
mayor of Moncado (Valencia)
and his vehicle was
left in a public car park last
Thursday when he returned
to find the four flat tyres.
No other cars were affected
in any way, leading the police
to suspect Mr Ort’s vehicle
was the sole target.
A spokesman for the opposition
party in the town
strongly condemned the
incident, saying it went
way beyond any political
disagreement.
BRITISH tabloid the Daily
Express has written an article
accusing Spain’s Queen
Letizia of copying the wardrobe
of Kate Middleton, the
Duchess of Cambridge.
Examples included a
white fitted jacket with pencil
skirt that Kate wore to
Derby day and Letizia on an
engagement in Rome.
Other examples of similar
by Simon Russell
dress styles were a red midi
dress with puffy sleeves, an
off the shoulder red dress
and a “statement suit”.
The Express ran an online
poll asking people if they
thought Letizia, who was
47 this week, was copying
37 year old Kate’s wardrobe
- with 71% of respondents
Grab a bargain and
help an animal
clicking on “No, I doubt it.”
As you would expect neither
royal court has commented
on the story, but as
someone from a middle class
background who forged a
career in TV journalism before
meeting King Felipe in
2003, it seems probable that
the Spanish consort knows
perfectly well how to dress
herself.
THERE are still some real bargains
to be had at the P.E.P.A.
charity shop in Oliva, as the
last few days of their sale gets
underway, with all clothing
priced at just 50 cents.
Saturday 21 September is the
last day and the shop will then
be closed on Monday to give the
volunteers the chance to put out
their autumn and winter lines.
The outlet is located in the
northern end of the town, opposite
the Mercadona car park entrance.
All proceeds go to helping local
cats and dogs that need housing -
see www.pepaspain.com for more
information.
Olympian death
may not have
been an accident
THE National Police have
said that one of their hypotheses
regarding the
death of Olympic medal
winner Blanca Fernandez
Ochoa is that it may not
have been an accident.
Ms Fernandez prompted
one of Spain’s largest ever
searches after she disappeared
while hiking in the
Pico de la Peñota mountain
near Madrid last month.
A body was found and
the search called off, although
the forensics team
have said that the corpse
is so badly decomposed
they will need to await for
the result of DNA tests before
finally confirming it is
by Simon Russell
even that of the skiing star.
Early reports were that
the body had severe head
injuries and was also found
with a large number of prescription
drug packets close
by.
Ms Fernanadez was a major
sports star in Spain and
became the countries first
ever winter Olympic medalist
in Albertville, France in 1992.

Business & Money
RESIDENCIA TIME IS TICKING!
Sun Lawyers are the people
to go to if you are looking to
become a Spanish resident,
especially with Brexit looming
even quicker around the
corner.
Only last week, the retiring
British Ambassador to
Spain, Simon Manley, said
that his final wish was for
every Brit living in the country
to make sure that they
are fully legal by getting a
residencia in time.
Sun Lawyers could not
agree more, and we know exactly
what to do for you, and
don’t forget that UK Prime
Minister,Boris Johnson, has
pledged to get Britain out of
the EU at the end of October,
deal or no deal, and that
means time is running out!
It all may seem a bit
daunting, but here at
Sun Lawyers, we’ve lost
count of how times we’ve
gone through this process
down the decades, and it is
straight-forward.
Sun Lawyers will do virtually
all the work for you to
give you peace of mind, and
make sure that you have all
the correct documents to enjoy
your time in Spain.
Delays earlier this year
in applying for a residencia
have all been cleared up, but
now is the time to get yours
if you haven’t already done
so.
Forget the bar talk and rumours,
because it is all very
simple, and you should apply
for a Spanish residency card
if:
• You’re spending more
than 90 days in Spain.
• You want to be legal in
Spain.
• You want to have
healthcare in Spain.
Let’s examine those three
points in more detail.
You’re staying
in Spain for over
90 days
It’s all down to the law, and
clearly states that if you
spend more than 90 days in
Spain per year, then you must
apply for a Spanish residency
card, which in effect is a stay
permit.
If you are from the UK,
the Brexit issue is clouding
the waters, but essentially
you have to get yourself covered
with a residencia, pure
and simple, and we at Sun
Lawyers can get that sorted
for you and your partner and
family.
The proposed UK-EU
withdrawal agreement allows
residencias to continue,
but they will then be
swapped over to a different
card, which the Spanish
government said earlier
this year would be a
straight-forward process.
That looks like being the
case as well in a no-deal
Brexit scenario according to
Madrid, but you have to get
a residencia right now, and
time is ticking by quickly.
You want to be
legal in Spain
This is a simple matter
of “peace of mind”, as doing
everything according to
Spanish rules can only bring
benefits, and Sun Lawyers
have the expertise to tell you
what’s what!
As an example, as a British
or any EU person that is permanently
resident in Spain,
once you have obtained your
Spanish residency card, you
then legally have to switch
your EU/British licence for a
Spanish driving licence.
Yes, EU driving licences
are valid in Spain (as long
as they have not expired),
but if you are a permanent
resident, you need to stay
within the law and swap
over to a Spanish document,
rather than going through
all kinds of hassles, some of
which could cost you time
and money.
That’s just one example
over being legal, and we
at Sun Lawyers have the
checklist that you need to
make sure that you will be
fine for many years to come.
You want to
use the Spanish
healthcare system
Essentially there are are two
main categories here:
• Limited and temporary
healthcare in
Spain. This must be
done through the EHIC
health card, but this
does not include ongoing
treatments.
• Permanent all-inclusive
healthcare in
Spain. One essential
requirement to qualify
is to have a Spanish
residencia, in order to
get a SIP card, which
will give you that vital
healthcare access.
Sun Lawyers will sort that
out for you, once you have got
that residencia, and there are
countless people that we have
helped on that score, with
many years of experience on
how to do it.
Ready to act?
It is common for Sun Lawyers
to see people postponing
important decisions, like the
need to apply for Spanish
residency or sorting out the
taxes or buying a home with
a reputable lawyer.
Don’t plough on without
the right advice and experts
behind you and get in touch
with the English-speaking
Sun Lawyers team to apply
for your Spanish residency,
which is imperative that you
get right now!
Local&WhatsOn
Counting the cost
after historic floods
THE Costa Blanca, and
the south of the region in
particular, are counting
both the human and financial
costs after the Gota
Fria that has been the
worst in over a decade,
and maybe even the worst
in a century according to
the meteorological office.
The time for updating the
record books will come later,
but the sad truth is that the
discovery of the body of a
Dutch national on Tuesday
has brought the death toll
in the southeast of Spain to
seven, a figure that may yet
by Simon Russell
rise. The unnamed 66 year
old male had been missing
since Sunday after being
swept away in San Fulgencio
in the Vega Baja area.
Indeed this part of the
world bore the brunt of the
flooding, with Orihuela being
probably the worst hit town.
Social media and the press
were full of pictures of cars
being washed away and
anything else in the waters
path, with scenes that resembled
something you may
see in the third world, rather
than this quiet region which
has become so popular with
expatriates.
An estimated 30,000 people
have been affected and
Spain is talking about a cost
of 200 million euros just to
bring things back to normal.
There have been around
14,000 claims in Murcia so
far and a similar amount in
the Valencian Community, relating
to homes, businesses,
cars and other damage.
Furniture has been
stacked in the still half flooded
streets, many people have
been without drinking water
Office for flood help
THE Callosa de Segura
Town Hall have opened a
“pop-up” office dedicated
to helping people affected
by the recent flooding that
hit the Vega Baja region so
badly.
It is located on the ground
floor of the Town Hall, on
Plaza de España - just
look out for the “Oficina de
Atencion” sign.
The office is there to help
by Simon Russell
those who have sustained
damage to their properties,
agricultural holdings or have
general enquiries about the
situation.
The council has also asked
that citizens kindly inform
them of any damage to roads
or municipal buildings in the
town so that they can inform
their technical services de-
partment - who will doubtless
be busy over the next
few weeks.
due to damaged networks
and others are effectively
homeless.
Schools were closed across
the region and many sustained
damage, while the
farming industry has also
been decimated with crops
such as beans, artichokes,
rice, grapes and soft fruit
“rotting in the ground” according
to farmers.
The expectation is that
emergency funding will be
forthcoming, but some towns
could still be living with the
impact of this week for years
to come.
Boat was the only way to get around for many
Workshop making
more than parts
by Simon Russell
TWO people have been
arrested in Crevillent accused
of using a mechanical
workshop as a front
for a large drug dealing
operation.
The Guardia Civil raided
the establishment earlier
this week and seized 3.6 kilos
of cocaine, a quantity of
hashish and 162,000 euros
in cash.
This was the culmination
of an operation that started
in February when agents
became aware of a base
for dealing cocaine in the
area, eventually narrowing
it down to the workshop in
question.
The arrested pair are a
while the other is from the
work in the future.

ALICANTE’S El Altet airport
increased passenger
numbers by 8% in August
compared to the same period
in 2018, according to
the latest figures released
by operator AENA.
August is regarded as the
most important month for the
airport with both domestic
by Simon Russell
and foreign tourists coming
down to this part of the world
for their summer holidays.
2019 as a whole has also
seen an 8% increase and is
well on track to break the
year end passenger numbers
record. Last month saw
1,522,017 people flying to and
from Alicante from abroad and
168,899 from within Spain.
As usual the UK had easily
the highest numbers of
foreign travellers, around
40% of the total.
This was followed by
Germany, the Netherlands,
Belgium, Norway and France.
UK school firm
investing locally
COGNITA, a UK company
which runs schools all over
the world, is investing an extra
million euros in Valencia.
They have joined the organisation
running the
existing British School of
Valencia (BSV) and are investing
the extra cash in the
Avenida de Paris centre to
expand it by 20%.
This will include seven new
classes, a science laboratory,
art room and library. BSV is
a private school offering British
education to pupils of all
nationalities.
As well as the UK and
Spain, Cognita runs schools in
countries such as Singapore,
China and Switzerland.
Fears of global
slump grow
THE US Federal Reserve
has cut interest rates this
week, prompting fears
that they are anticipating
an economic slowdown or
even recession.
They were cut from 2% to
1.75%, saying this was due
to a weakening of the domestic
economy.
Fed Chairman Jerome
by Simon Russell
Powell took a swing at President
Trump, blaming this on
“trade policy”, almost certainly
a reference to Trump’s
tariff war with China.
Trump in turn tweeted
that Mr Powell was “a terrible
communicator and had
no guts” and he should have
cut the rate further.
Lower rates make borrowing
cheaper, fuelling
economic activity, in theory
at least. Any US financial
crisis or even blip is likely
to have a major knock on
elsewhere, with the last
full blown crisis being triggered
by American banking
problems.
Federal Reserve chairman Powell makes the announcement this week

mals can have lots of positive
effects. It can:
• improve your mood
• reduce feelings of stress
• improve your physical
Aimee Gee from the charity,
told The Guardian newspaper
recently that the colours,
sounds and smells of a garden,
“boost our wellbeing, while
nurturing a garden or allotment
provides the satisfaction
of completing tasks and
a stronger connection with
the natural environment, both
of which are associated with
improved self-esteem and
decreased levels of anger.”
Dr Philippa James, one
of the GPs involved in the
Manchester initiative, adds:
“I've seen how our patients
relax in the garden - and
how they then get involved
in wider events like picking
litter, which all adds to pride
in our area.
“There’s a lot of evidence
now about how two hours a
week in a green space can
lift mood - and then that
too has physical, mental
and emotional benefits.
That’s something we need
to harness.”
Gardening is a physical
activity which burns 200-500
calories an hour, and helps
maintain a healthy weight,
reducing the risk of obesity,
according to the Garden
Organic Organisation.
And it says the pastime is
second only to weight training
as an effective way to
increase bone intensity.
And it gets you up and
moving. Just a small increase
in light activity, such
as a little gentle gardening,
may help stave off an early
death among older adults,
according to recent research
published in the BMJ.
Digging, turning compost
and raking use the upper
and lower body and offer
moderate intensity physical
activity.
Other tasks that use primarily
the upper body in
standing or squatting postures
such as hand weeding,
mixing soil sowing and transplanting
seedlings offering
low intensity physical activity.

EGGSHELLS, matches, and
human hair are amongst
some of the most surprising
household items greenfingered
gardeners can use
to help their plants grow.
Experts have researched
the unlikely things that you
can use as natural fertilisers.
From common food products
such as bananas and eggshells
to potato water, these
are items that can be found
in most people’s homes.
A spokesperson for GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk,
who carried out the research,
says: “You might not think
your used-up coffee grounds
contain much in terms of nutritional
value, but they can
actually provide your plants
with vital antioxidants and
minerals like potassium and
nitrogen.
“Similarly, white vinegar,
coconut milk and banana
peels are all bursting with
important nutrients that
can help your plants grow
and thrive.
“Surprisingly, even human
and pet hair can be used
thanks to its high levels of
magnesium – so think twice
before vacuuming up your
pooch’s fur!”
Hair
Hair – whether sourced from
a human, dog, cat or horse –
works surprisingly well as a
natural fertiliser thanks to
its high levels of magnesium.
It can take up to two years to
break down, but when used
in compost, the hair can
provide structural support
for roots and help break up
thick or clay soil.
White vinegar
Mixed with water, this
makes for a great acid feed.
Mix a tablespoon of vinegar
into a gallon of water to feed
your roses and hydrangeas
once per season – but make
sure you test your soil before
doing this, as you don’t want
the PH to be too low.
Banana peels
Tossing banana peels right
into your garden will give
your plants a nice potassium
boost as they break down.
This will help to make your
plants strong and healthy,
allowing them to fight off
pests like aphids.
Eggshells
Dry eggshells out and add
them under your mulch and
they will slowly break down
and give your plants calcium.
For even quicker results,
you can grind them up
and place in a small amount
of vinegar overnight to break
them down and make the
calcium ready to be utilised
by your plants. You could
even give them a whirl in
a food processor to sprinkle
the eggshell powder.
Coconut milk
Make a ‘tea’ containing one
tablespoon of dried coconut
powder to give gallons of
water, then use this mixture
once a week or every other
week to add electrolytes and
bacteria to the soil.
Coffee
Use coffee grounds to fertilize
your soil and provide
your plants with antioxidants,
potassium, phosphor
and nitrogen – but make
sure the grounds are dry, as
using wet coffee can cause
fungus to grow which will
harm your plants.
Charge your
home with the
power of the sun
Potato water
The water you use to boil potatoes
can be used to water
your plants, as long as you
haven’t added any salt – so
think twice before tipping it
down the drain!
T: 966 848 980
Green tea
Green tea is especially beneficial
for raspberry plants, as
they require a great amount
of iron which green tea has
stacks of.
So instead of throwing
away the green tea leaves
you’ve used to brew your
tea, simply give it to your
plants.
Matches
Good, old-fashioned strike
matches are a great source
of magnesium, so simply
place the whole match in the
hole with the plant or soak
the matches in water to use
this as a fertiliser. The magnesium
will dissolve into the
water and make application
easier.
Basel
Basel
by Yvonne Hollywood,
Worldwide Horizons
The third largest city in
Switzerland, Basel is located
on the river Rhine,
where it borders with
neighbouring countries of
Germany and France.
Recently ranked as one of
the top ten most liveable cities
in the world, the city has history
which can be traced back
to 5BC to the first settlement.
Basel is home to many museums,
including the Kunstmuseum,
the first collection
of art which was made available
to the European Public
in 1661, and still the largest
art museum in the whole of
Switzerland.
Inside the museum there
are examples of work from
Rembrandt and Rubens, an
impressive display of works
of Van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne,
Manet and Gauguin
and an entire room devoted
to the display of Picasso.
Walking around, you can
also see displays of art such
as the Holbein Fountain, a
Renaissance work by Hans
Holbien the Younger built in
the 16th Century.
There are many walking
tours of the city ensuring
that you see the best examples
of the architecture and
the most important places
during your visit.
One such place being the
Basel Minster, an imposing
structure including the two
towers, over 60 metres in
height.
For those who wish, you
can pay a small fee to climb
to the top of a narrow staircase
and from there see the
views over Basel and the
Rhine.
Another way to get a great
view, and rehydrate at the
same time, is to visit Bar
Rouge, an intimate and chic
bar which reaches 105 meters
in height, at the top of
which you can enjoy cocktails
and views to die for during
the day, whilst at night enjoy
some great entertainment
with local DJ’s.
If you are after something
a little more relaxing, visit
the Bird’s Eye Jazz Club, one
of the best in Switzerland
and which attracts national
and International Jazz musicians.
Whatever your taste, you
are sure to find something
to suit, with Basel also offering
craft beer bars and chic
Cocktail bars too.
Of course, life in the city
is influenced heavily by the
river that runs through it.
the river, competitive swimmers
pit themselves against
the current, or simply enjoy
a more leisurely dip in the
waters.
Outside of the city limits,
some stretches of the river
are sandy and offer a relaxed
beach atmosphere for
a weekend getaway!
For many, Basel is the perfect
overnight base to start
one of the many Rhine River
Cruises.
These can be starting
from Basel to Amsterdam, or
as a port of call on a longer
cruise such as Amsterdam to
Budapest.
As all of these cities have
direct connections with Alicante,
each of them are easily
accessible and definitely
worth a visit as a city break,
or as part of a larger holiday.
Remember, as with most
European cities, there are a
variety of festivals and carnivals
held throughout the
year.
Whilst these will affect the
price of accommodation, at
the same time, these unique
events are amazing to witness,
so remember to check
what’s on when you are planning
your stay!
FRIDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2019 21
Salzburg
...a world-class city
Salzburg is known as the
city where Mozart was
born and raised and as
the film location for "The
Sound of Music." It is characterised
by the historic
city centre with its narrow
streets and spacious
squares (listed as a UNES-
CO World Heritage Site),
the “Mozartkugel” chocolate
praline, the Salzburg
Festival and the stunning
mountain panorama.
Salzburg's most
famous son
The city's most famous son
still enchants music lovers
from around the world.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
was born in Getreidegasse
9 on January 27,
1756.
After completion of the
renovations in 2010, Mozart's
birthplace now houses
a permanent exhibition
based on four themes.
It is one of the most often
photographed buildings
and one of the most highly
frequented museums in the
world.
Over 350 of his most
beautiful pieces were written
here, laying the cornerstone
for a unique career
that made Mozart what he
is today: undisputedly the
world's most significant and
most often played composer,
whose music was to open a
new chapter in music history.
"Original Salzburger
Mozartkugel"
In 1890 Salzburg's master
confectioner, Paul Fürst, invented
a praline he called
the Mozartkugel.
The confectioner chose
the name in honour of the
Salzburg composer who had
not reached the height of
popularity at the time.
The praline's novel features
were its round shape
and technically difficult concentric
composition: green
pistachio marzipan surrounded
by a layer of nougat,
and dipped into dark melted
chocolate.
The sweets industry started
producing the Mozartkugel
industrially prior to
World War I.
The "Original Salzburger
Mozartkugel" is a specialty
still produced by hand to this
day without artificial ingredients
or preservatives.
That is why they are not
found in international supermarkets
or souvenir booths
but only available at the four
Fürst confectioner's shops in
Salzburg.
Salzburg Festival
“The atmosphere in Salzburg
is pervaded by beauty, theatre
and art …” according to
Max Reinhardt, theatre director
and the main initiator
of the Salzburg Festival.
It was founded in 1920,
just after World War I, when
Max Reinhard was joined by
a group of local Salzburg artists
and intellectuals aiming
to fulfill his dream of turning
the entire city into a stage.
Jedermann (Everyman) –
the very first play performed
at the Festival – has been an
integral part of Europe's most
prominent music festival ever
since.
The world-famous conductor,
Herbert von Karajan,
born in Salzburg on April
5, 1908, founded the Easter
Festival in 1967 and the
Whitsun Festival in 1973,
whose high standard of performance
is appreciated by
thousands of art and musiclovers
year after year.
Culinary highlights
Salzburg has plenty to offer
in the way of restaurants:
from bars located high above
the city rooftops, romantic
street cafés, trendy pubs to
gourmet meccas.
Connoisseurs will find a
virtual El Dorado in Salzburg
– only a few other
places in Austria have such
a wide variety of fine restaurants
within such a small radius
featuring international,
award-winning chefs.
Nineteen breweries, including
the largest private
brewery in Salzburg, make
Salzburg the state's beer
capital.
The Sound of Music
Hollywood also left its imprint
on the city. The film
“The Sound of Music” has
been seen by one out of three
Japanese tourists, is one of
the main reasons for visiting
Salzburg for three-quarters
of the American tourists and
its songs are sung around
the world.
“The Sound of Music” was
shot on location in the city of
Salzburg and its environs.
The locations can still be
visited today.
FRIDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER 2019 25
Health&Lifestyle
How healthy is
a veggie diet?
VEGETARIAN and pescetarian
diets may be
linked to a lower risk of
coronary heart disease,
according to new scientific
research.
However, the study also
revealed that vegetarians
and vegans have a higher
risk of suffering a stroke
than meat eaters.
A large-scale study carried
out by a team from Oxford
University was published in
The BMJ.
It found that people who
follow the ‘veggie’ diets have
a 22 per lower risk of heart
disease than meat eaters,
while those who eat fish but
no meat saw the risk reduced
to 13 per cent.
But the researchers also
found that vegetarians and
vegans were a fifth more
likely to suffer a stroke than
meat eaters, which they suggest
may be partly down to a
lack of vitamins.
They also suggested that
low blood levels of total cholesterol
among vegetarians
and vegans may play a role
and called for further investigations
to be carried out.
The study included data for
48,188 people with no history
of heart disease or stroke
at the start of the research.
The group was split into
meat-eaters, fish-eaters who
consumed fish but no meat
and vegetarians and vegans.
Announcing its findings,
the research team said: “In
recent years, more and more
people have been turning to
vegetarian and vegan diets,
which is partly due to the
perceived health benefits,
as well as concerns about
the environment and animal
welfare. But the full extent
of the potential health benefits
and hazards of these
diets is not well understood.”
They added: “We observed
lower rates of ischaemic
heart disease in fish eaters
and vegetarians than in
meat eaters, which appears
to be at least partly due to
lower body mass index and
lower rates of high blood
pressure, high blood cholesterol,
diabetes associated
with these diets.”
In the UK alone there are
an estimated 1.7m vegetarians
and vegans. Reports
in 2017 revealed Spain was
home to the tenth highest
percentage of vegans in the
world.
Other reports say that in
that same year 7.8 per cent
of Spain’s adult population
were “veggie”.
Dr Tammy Tong, who led
the research, said that further
research was needed to
“replicate the results in other
populations” and it should include
further measurements
of nutritional factors.
Prof Mark Lawrence, of
Deakin University in Australia,
says that the study’s
stroke risk should aldo be
kept in perspective.
He said: “It is based on results
from just one study and
the increase is modest relative
to meat eaters.
“Relevance to vegetarians
worldwide must also be considered.
Participants were all
from the UK where dietary
patterns and other lifestyle
behaviours are likely very different
from those prevalent
in low and middle-income
countries where most of the
world’s vegetarians live.”
Current dietary guidelines
contain the most evidence
based advice available for
vegetarians, as well as for
fish and meat eaters.
They also recognise plant
based diets for their environmental
sustainability as
well as health benefits, he
added.
A show of strength
Muscle-strenghtening exercise
such as carrying
heavy shopping or doing
the garden should be carried
out at least twice a
week, according to new
official health guidelines.
The latest guidance from
the UK’s Chief Medical Officers
emphasises the importance
of building strength
and balance for adults, as
well as focusing on cardiovascular
exercise.
It says falls are the main
reason older people end up
in accident and emergency,
and could be avoided through
daily activities such as brisk
walking, carrying heavy
shopping, climbing stairs,
swimming and gardening.
And the health chiefs say
there is “strong evidence”
that physical activity protects
against a range of
chronic conditions. Meeting
the guidelines can reduce
the risk of type 2 diabetes by
40 per cent, coronary heart
disease by 35 per cent and
depression by 30 per cent.
The new guidelines are an
update to those released in
2011, but the overall message
remains the same:
“Any activity is better than
none, and more is better
still”.
Under the new guidelines,
adults are advised to
undertake strength-based
exercise at least two days a
week.
The experts say this can
help delay the natural decline
in muscle mass and
bone density that starts
from around age 50. It is
believed that this is a major
reason why older people
lose their ability to carry out
daily tasks.
Chief Medical Officer for
England, Professor Dame
Sally Davies, said: “Physical
activity is an under-appreciated
asset in our clinical arsenal.
It is cheap and brings
a long list of health benefits.
As we age, our muscles
weaken and we can become
stiff, leading to falls and difficulty
performing everyday
activities.
“Physical activity can prevent
fragility and support
mobility in old age. By keeping
active, both throughout
the day and also through
hobbies, we can slow muscle
and bone decline, ultimately
keeping us independent for
longer.”
The advice urges pregnant
women and new mothers
to do the same amount
of exercise as other adults,
and for babies to be given at
least 30 minutes of ‘tummy
time’ a day, which includes
semi-crawling and pulling
themselves.
And over-65s are being
encouraged to take up
bowls, dancing or tai chi – a
Chinese martial art – that
are less strenuous ways of
maintaining strength and
balance.
The previous guidelines
stated that adults should
do 150 minutes of exercise a
week, ideally in sessions of
at least ten minutes on most
days of the week.
The new advice is more
flexible and suggests that doing
one or two longer bursts
– such as at the weekend – is
just as beneficial.
According to reports,
the latest figures show
that only 62 per cent of
adults are meeting the existing
recommendations,
just 58 per cent of women
and 66 per cent of men.

in that the goal is for the solver to
uncover a hidden quote. A black-andwhite
each quote, with a number of letters
“hovering” above each column. Your task
punctuation (commas, periods, dashes,
BONKERS
A WOMAN who spent her night complaining
that her heels were hurting has gone viral after
revealing she had been wearing them on
the wrong feet.
Ayleigh McGhee, from Glasgow, spent her entire
night out “moaning” that she couldn’t walk
in her snakeskin stilettos, The Sun newspaper
reports.
Ant it wasn’t until the next day that she realised
that she had mixed up the left and right
shoes before heading for a night on the town.
A pal shared a snap of the fashion faux pas on
Twitter and has received more than 33,000 likes
and hundreds of comments
One Twitter user joked: “Here’s a big difference
between women and men. Women think they need
to endure this for fashion, men would never leave
the house in something so uncomfortable.”
Back In Britain
FROM colleagues heating fish in
the communal microwave, to not
filling the printer with paper and
singing out loud ever so loudly –
what really annoys Brit office workers?
Business telecommunications provider
4Com decided to find out and
discovered that workmates eating
smelly food in the office, for example,
eggs and tuna, is the number one pet
peeve.
Eating out loud, speaking to loudly
and whistling and singing also get on
our nerves.
Making a crisis out of a
drama
GOODNESS knows what
Hilda Ogden would think.
Apparently soaps like Corrie
and EastEnders are going
down the drain – and it’s
down to all the drama.
BBC arts critic Mark Lawson
is warning that Soapland
faces a “potentially fatal crisis”
by barraging fans with
implausible and harrowing
storylines.
Pointing to falling audience
figures he says shows such as
Coronation Street “risk becoming
impossible to either
write or act.”
Recent plot lines include a
siege at the Queen Vic pub in
EastEnders, in which a character
was shot dead, and a
Getting the message
So, when faced with these office
bugbears, what lengths do workers go
to avoid these irritations from arising
again?
It appears in ten will sneakily leave
a passive-aggressive note. And the
sassiest? According to 4Com it’s this
one – making a point about perhaps
the most British of topics to argue
over: tea.
Having reached the end of their
tether over disappearing teabags, this
worker declared, in capital letters: “I
graft to afford teabags. I’m sure I’m
not alone. So, stop helping yourself
historic child sex abuse case
in Corrie.
Lawson also blames the rise
in popularity of TV dramas.
He told the Radio Times: “As
other TV fiction has become
busier and darker, perhaps
the soaps need to aim lighter
and slower, without risking
the village play/cricket match
lulls to which The Archers is
prone.” By ‘eck chuck, as our
Hilda would say.
and try buying your own!”
Another worker was courteous
enough to leave a very honest note following
their toilet troubles: ‘Clogged,
sorry. But feeling much better’.
SOOTY’S CLEAN
A VINTAGE Sooty puppet which
once used on TV by Harry Corbett is
going on sale for £1,200 at auction.
The famous yellow bear has been sitting
in a box for 41 years after the entertainer
gave him to one of his friend’s
daughters in the 1970s.
Tina Stewart, who received the special
gift, said: “It’s time for someone
else to enjoy him. Perhaps he should
be in a toy museum.’
Sooty, a practical joker and magician
who communicates by ‘whispering’ to
big cat that has been spotted
across Cambridgeshire for
more than three decades appears
to have been finally been
captured on camera.
The Fen Tiger is a local legend
– but has remained elusive. That
was until Jamie Newby and fiancée
Haley spotted the animal
moving through a field in Ipswich
and took the chance to take a snap
him and his sidekick’s Sweep and Soo.
TOP CAT GIVES PAWS FOR THOUGHT
of it. The couple told the Cambridgeshire
creature was bigger than a Labrador
and had a ‘scary, evil face’.
Jamie said: “The size of it instantly
struck me. I’d seen a dog
walker walking a Labrador in the
same exact spot the day before
and the cat looked bigger than
that.”
You’d need more than a few tins
just £150, two devoted
fans of Downton Abbey
For one night only, the
Earl and Countess of Carnarvon
They’ll enjoy cocktails,
dinner and breakfast the
The invite comes as the
The doors to the castle
will be opened on Tuesday,
Guests will meet Lady
Andy
Mansell’s
Stars In My
Eyes
GARETH’S AND BEN’S
HEARTACHE
There are times that us writers feel ashamed
of our fellow journalists, who cross unwritten
boundaries to uncover apparent dirt on
celebrities. Two stories this week, made me
feel exactly that …… sick to my stomach at the
depths they sink to. Firstly, openly gay, ex rugby
star, Gareth Thomas, who was forced to reveal
his HIV status by a journalist, described how the
reporter, approached his parents and told them
his diagnosis, before he had a chance to tell
them himself.
‘I can never have that time back, I can never have
that moment back to sit down with them and be
able to explain to them why their son is going to
be okay and he’s going to be able to live through
this and live a healthy, normal life,’ the 45-yearold
explained on BBC Radio 5 Live.
With Brexit uncertainty a part of
everyday life in the UK and beyond,
it appears that the BBC don’t trust
the country enough to allow them
to choose our Eurovision song for
next year competition in Rotterdam
in May.
The corporation, has scrapped the
You Decide programme, where the
public vote on various songs.
Instead, next year’s act will be
decided by the BBC in collaboration
with record label and publisher
BMG.
Word is that veteran rocker Sir Rod
Stewart is set to pair up with slightly
younger crooner Robbie Williams for
a track on his new album.
The 74-year-old singer asked Robbie,
45, to collaborate for a track on
his latest release, a collection
of his greatest hits which have
been re-recorded with the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra.
A source told The Sun’s Bizarre
column: “Rod and Robbie have long
been fans of each other’s work and
Robbie sees Rod as an inspirational
mentor.
“They have been waiting for this
moment for a long time. Robbie and
Rod have finally managed to fit in
BBC Studios approached several
labels, but finally decided to go
with BMG, who have a strong record
of creating successful popstars,
including Lewis Capaldi, George
Ezra, and Jess Glyne, as it shared
a ‘vision of selecting a song with
broad international appeal and
securing an artist who embodies
the spirit and values of the
Eurovision song contest’
Well, let’s face it, they can’t do any
worse than last year’s dismal effort
of finishing last with 11 points.
Sir Worzel?
Gareth Thomas
was forced to reveal
his HIV status
In the other story, a Sun journalist, flew to New
Zealand to uncover details of a family tragedy
involving the mother of England cricket star, Ben
Stokes, leaving the sportsman angry and upset.
“It is hard to find words that adequately describe
such low and despicable behaviour, disguised
as journalism. I cannot conceive of anything
more immoral, heartless or contemptuous to the
feelings and circumstances of my family,” he
wrote on his twitter account. I rest my case.
THE ROD AND ROB SHOW
studio time to lay down vocals for
the song, which they are hoping
to release later this year on Rod’s
upcoming album.
Not sure what the song is likely to be,
but looking at Rod’s latest hairstyle,
something by Worzel Gummidge
might be appropriate.
Halfway through watching season two
of the enthralling POSE, set in the 1990’s
World of New York drag balls, I watched a
trailer for the upcoming season of another
of producer Ryan Murphy’s mega series,
American Horror Story:1984.
In the clip, a group of teens can be seen
travelling to Camp Redwood while a killer
in a balaclava clings to the bottom of their
car. It’s very clearly inspired by the Friday
The 13th series, with the footage later
paying an homage to Jason Voorhees by
replicating his death-from-beneath-thelake
routine. It’s unclear if the new series
will be entirely based in Camp Redwood,
or if this will just be one of the locations
featured in 1984. I’m hooked already,
especially as one of the transgender stars
The course was playable
despite the amount of water
it had been subjected to.
As numbers were not ideal,
the only four-ball outfit
had to discard one score on
each hole.
Five points were deducted
for every team who did not
This worked against the
team finishing second as
they scored most points but,
a deduction left them level
and they lost on count back.
Indeed, of the four teams
competing, only one Yellow
Summertime
was special
From L to R: Lyn Young, Barry Walthall, Helen Beddows, Mike Davies, Henry Mellor,
Janice O’ Brien
ENGLAND’S cricket captain
Joe Root says coming
from behind to draw the
Ashes series rounded off
a summer that has been
a “huge success” for the
national side and the
game.
It was certainly a season
of thrills that will last long
in the memory. A ‘super over’
victory in an amazing World
Cup Final saw England lift
their first 50 over World Cup
in July.
And though they did
not regain the Ashes, Ben
Stokes remarkable performance
in the third Test, followed
by a massive team effort
at the Oval in the final
game, ensured the series
ended level. Root, who was
also a member of the 50-
over side, has repeated his
desire to still be in charge
when England fight to win
back the urn on the tour of
Australia in 2021-22.
And he has declared she
wants to be captain for the
“long haul”. He said: “I’m
desperate to take this team
forward.
Speaking after England’s
Oval victory he said: “I’m in a
very privileged position to be
captain of the Test team and
I’ll do everything I to can to
get us very well prepared for
going down there and hopefully
doing something very
special.”
The Yorkshire batsman
added: “What a summer of
cricket it has been. It’s been
phenomenal.
“That World Cup was incredible,
for it to finish how
it did, made for fantastic
viewing – not just the England
games, but across the
board. It was backed up by
such an evenly matched
Ashes series. We were
blessed by brilliant support
throughout and the cricket
was pretty gripping. It was
quite hard to be involved in
at times, especially when we
were on the wrong end of it.
It has been a huge success
for English cricket and a
great opportunity to spring
the game forward in this
country.”
Flying Dutchman Mathieu takes centre stage
DUTCH cycling star Mathieu van der Poel won the 2019
Ovo Energy Tour of Britain after taking the final stage
which ended in Manchester city centre.
It was his third stage win of the week and the final day’s
racing came to a close with a thrilling spring to the line, the
overall winner taking the stage by the smallest of margins.
The 24-year-old said: “I was focused on the line and think
I timed it perfectly. I was pretty confident I could hold off the
guys around me but you cannot react to everyone.
“There were maybe 20 guys who could have won. But in
the end I did a perfect job and the team did a perfect job.”
World Cup is the chance to
create “something special”
after tasting bitter disappointment
in the previous
two tournaments.
He is one of four survivors,
along with centre Manu Tuilagi
and forwards Dan Cole
and Courtney Lawes, from
the squad that travelled to
New Zealand eight years
ago.
England went out in the
quarter-finals in 2011 amid
off-field controversies and
then failed to get out of the
group stages four years ago
on home turf.
Speaking to the BBC he
said: “I think anyone wants
decisive 94th-minute United
penalty in the last-16 second
leg-tie in the French capital
“a disgrace”. The decision
means that he will miss the
games against Real Madrid
and Galatasaray but can
return to face Club Bruges
on October 22. PSG took the
case to the court after Uefa
rejected their appeal against
the ban.
Neymar was injured with
to look back at the end of
their career and feel proud of
success – and the World Cup
is always the pinnacle.
“This opportunity here
with this side is probably the
best shot I have of being able
to look back at a period of my
career and say, yeah, that was
something really special.”
He added: “I’m proud of
the fact I’ve been to two
World Cups before – I’m
proud of 2011 in that I was
there, and in 2015 representing
England at a home
World Cup, which was an
achievement in itself.
“Every experience is different.
They all teach you something.
And the biggest experience
from 2011 was making
a broken metatarsal and
missed both legs of the tie
against United. However,
after the 3-1 defeat he wrote
on social media blasting the
penalty decision, which was
given after a lengthy VAR
review.
The player stormed: “It’s
a disgrace. Four guys who
know nothing about football
watch a slow-motion replay
in front of the television.”
Up for the
challenge
sure you stay focused on the
pitch and deliver on that.
“There were a lot of distractions
going on in that
tournament that didn’t help
us to deliver.
“World Cups are strange
things, and I don’t have the
magic formula – it’s sport, it
happens. It happened to us.
“I can sit here and say I’m
determined it won’t happen
again, but I can’t guarantee
it.
“But it’s what coming up
that matters- about this
group now under Eddie
Jones. There are many guys
who played in 2011 and
2015 who didn’t get another
opportunity at a World
Cup.”

Former Rangers
hero Fernando
Ricksen dies
Ricksen won 12 caps and
spent six seasons at Ibrox
and the Dutchman had
been living with motor neurone
disease
The end of Fernando’s suffering
brings heartbreak and
relief said his family.
Fernando spent six trophyladen
seasons at Ibrox having
initially joined a number
of other Dutch players under
manager Dick Advocaat in
the summer of 2000. Ricksen,
who won 12 caps and was
signed by Rangers from AZ
Alkmaar for £3.75m, raised
awareness of motor neurone
disease and funds to tackle it
through the Fernando Ricksen
Foundation.
The famous Benidorm bar
“IBROX” Calle Lapanto, had
a number of visits from Ricksen
who on his birthday came
to Benidorm. Together with
owners Wilma and John they
raised thousands of euros for
his charity. Talking to Wilma
today she said “we will continue
to have his birthday
fund raisers here at Ibrox Bar
in his memory and to help
fight this awful killer disease”
A benefit match, held at
Ibrox in January 2015, was
attended by more than 41,000
fans and raised £320,000,
with the proceeds split between
Fernando, his daughter
Isabella, MND Scotland
and the Rangers Charity
Foundation.
Rangers said today “The
thoughts of everyone at
Rangers are today with his
wife Veronika, his daughter
Isabella and all his family
and friends.”
De Gea commits to
DAVID De Gea has signed
a new long-term contract
with Manchester United,
keeping him at the club
until at least June 2023.
The 28-year-old Spanish
goalkeeper arrived at Old
Trafford in 2011 and has
made 367 appearances for
the Premier League side so
far.
During his time with the
club, he has won the Premier
League, the FA Cup,
the League Cup, the UEFA
Europa League and the
Community Shield.
He said: “It has been a
United
privilege to spend eight
years at this great club and
the opportunity to continue
my career at Manchester
United is a genuine honour.
“Since I arrived here, I
could never have imagined
I would play over 350 games
for this club. Now my future
is fixed, all I want is to help
this team achieve what I
believe we can and win trophies
again, together.”
He added: “As one of the
senior players in the squad,
I want to support and lead in
any way that I can to assist
the younger players, so they
know what it means to play
here. I still feel that I have
so much more to achieve at
the club and I truly believe
that Manchester United can
build on the club’s tradition
of success and reward our
fans for their support.”
United boss Ole Gunnar
Solskjaer said: “I am delighted
that David has committed
his long-term future
to the club.
“ Over recent years, David
has proved himself to
be the best in the world and
a vital part of our plans as
we look to take Manchester
United back to where it belongs.
“David is a fantastic person
and his outstanding
quality provides the perfect
base to our defence.”
