Our History
WILMA RUDOLPH, OLYMPIC
TRACK AND FIELD GOLD
MEDALIST AND CIVIL RIGHTS
TRAILBLAZER, who was paralyzed
by polio as a young child, went on to
be considered “the fastest woman
in the world” in the 1960s, bringing
home three gold medals from the
1956 and 1960 Olympic Games.
Named in her honor is a portion of
Highway 79 along with the event
center within Liberty Park. A bronze
statue of Rudolph also adorns the
exterior of the event center.
Clarksville was established in 1784 near the confluence of the
Cumberland and Red Rivers, where John Montgomery and Martin
Armstrong began creating a settlement. The area had great value not only
in being near the water but also by being downstream from Nashville.
The town was named for General George Rogers Clark, an Indian fighter
and Revolutionary War leader.
Though originally established as part of colonial North Carolina, Tennessee
was eventually founded as the 16th state in 1796, at which point Tennessee
County was divided into Montgomery and Robertson Counties.
Although Clarksville endured hardships in its first 20 years, the early 1800s
were devoted to building roads, railroads and bridges, as well as establishing
churches and educational institutions. In 1806, Rural Academy was
established on the present site of Austin Peay State University. Two years
later, the state’s oldest newspaper, The Leaf-Chronicle, went to print.
After the Civil War in the 1860’s, Clarksville grew in notoriety as a farming
and trading town and became well-known for its tobacco production.
Today, Clarksville is one of the fastest growing cities in the South.
was ranked the 68th fastest growing county in the
country with a 3% growth of 5,935 residents, according
to the US Census Bureau. As a result, real estate
Outdoor Recreation
With four distinctly beautiful seasons, Clarksville is home
to activities and events that can be experienced and
enjoyed all year long.
In the spring, residents turn out in droves at local parks
and trails, enjoying early blooms and birds at Dunbar Cave
State Natural Area and Rotary Park, among others. The
tranquil drive to Historic Collinsville transports you back to
the mid-19th century and boasts some fine picnic spots,
live music and more.
Summer provides dozens of water, trails and outdoor
activities. Walking, biking, hiking, kayaking/canoeing,
fishing, boating, water skiing, golf are just a few of the
ways to enjoy an active lifestyle.
Fall is one of our most beloved seasons. Vibrant foliage
makes the Greenway Trail System and RiverWalk
especially popular. Austin Peay State University football is
also a local favorite.
While we do enjoy an occasional snowfall, mild winters
make most outdoor activities enjoyable all year long.
19

The City of Clarksville Parks and
Recreation Department (CPRD)
maintains over 1,000 acres of parks
and facilities. The 23 City parks
offer a variety of amenities including
playgrounds, picnic areas, walking
trails, and pavilions. Several of the
parks throughout Clarksville also
feature restrooms, open play areas,
outdoor fitness equipment, splash
pads, basketball and tennis courts,
and sports fields. Additionally, CPRD
maintains four public swimming
pools and three recreation centers
with year-round programming for
youth, adults, and seniors.
WALKING/BIKING TRAILS
The Clarksville Greenway is a great
trail to get active or take a scenic
walk through nature. This 5.5-mile
trail is situated in north Clarksville
along the banks of the Red River
and West Fork Creek. It offers a
wonderful experience for citizens
and visitors with views of the river
and beautiful forestry. Like the City’s
other trails, it is a part of the
Rails-to-Trails initiative that
transforms scenic abandoned
railroad rights of way and river
corridors into walking and biking
trails. It has garnered statewide
recognition for environmental
stewardship as well as popularity
among citizens. Native species of
plants and animals can be viewed
throughout the corridor. One of the
unique features of the trail is the
Raymond C. Hand Pass, a 600-foot
pedestrian bridge. Restrooms are
Austin Peay State University is a comprehensive university
committed to raising the educational attainment
of the citizenry, developing programs and services that
address regional needs and providing collaborative
opportunities that connect university expertise with private
and public resources. Collectively, these endeavors
contribute significantly to the intellectual, economic,
social, physical and cultural development of the region.
APSU prepares students to be engaged and productive
citizens while recognizing that society and the marketplace
require global awareness and continuous learning.
Named for Clarksville native and former Tennessee Gov.
Austin Peay, APSU is one of the region’s key economic
engines, with an economic impact of more than $333
million annually. Austin Peay’s beautiful Clarksville
campus is on 195 acres in downtown Clarksville.
In addition to the Clarksville campus, APSU has locations
at nearby Fort Campbell and at Highland Crest in
Springfield, Tennessee. While the University was
established in 1927 as Austin Peay Normal School,
a small, localized college to train teachers, over the
decades Austin Peay changed from a normal school to
a college, eventually evolving into a university in 1967.
Today, the University has grown to become a major
regional provider of higher education with a student
enrollment of 10,954 – APSU is the fastest-growing
public university in Tennessee.
50 graduate degree paths, and more than 125 undergraduate
degree paths, including associate degrees, the
University provides a variety of options for degree
attainment. Additionally, as the state’s leader in higher
education for military-connected students, Austin Peay
offers many degrees online and in eight-week terms,
providing better options for military-connected students.
The University continues to expand its footprint and
enhance its ties with the Clarksville community through
facility and property expansions, including continued
growth on the south side of College Street, building a
stronger direct connection into downtown Clarksville –
a critical part of the University’s strategic plan.
APSU recently launched two notable programs: the
University’s first-ever doctoral degree program –
an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership – and the state’s
first-ever rotorcraft flight school that offers a bachelor’s
degree – aviation science with a concentration
in rotor wing (helicopters).
APSU boasts two Centers of Excellence – the Center
Excellence for Field Biology. Combining the institution’s
well-established disciplines of music, creative writing,
art and theater, the Center of Excellence in Creative Arts
is designed to promote the creative arts in Tennessee.
A regional oasis for the arts, the center sponsors more
than 100 concerts, exhibits, lectures, recitals and events
annually. The Center of Excellence for Field Biology is
a major research component of the University, highly
Fort Campbell
HISTORY
Fort Campbell Army Post straddles the border of
Kentucky and Tennessee. The post is named in honor of
William Bowen Campbell, a former Tennessee Governor
who served as a Union General in the Civil War. Fort
Campbell was originally established (in 1942) as a
war-time armor training and mobilization camp during
WWII and became a permanent installation in 1950.
From 1948 to 1965, the post was also home to Clarksville
Base, a top-secret nuclear weapons storage and
modification facility. Over the years, Fort Campbell has
been home to several airborne, armored and infantry
units and has grown to become one of the Army’s most
important permanent installations.
Fort Campbell has been the home of the 101st Airborne
Division (Air Assault), the only Air Assault division in the
world, since 1956. Two prestigious Special Operations
Command units, the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne)
and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment
(Airborne), have also been at Fort Campbell since the
mid-1980s. In 2009, the 52nd Ordnance Group (EOD)
relocated to Fort Campbell (from Fort Gilliam, GA) as part
of 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC)
stationing actions.
Throughout its history, Fort Campbell has supported the
training and deployment of front-line Army units involved
in the nation’s wars, beginning with World War II through
Vietnam and Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and
up to the current Overseas Contingency Operations.
Since 2002, Fort Campbell units have been among the
most deployed combat units in the Army.
MISSION
Fort Campbell is a power projection platform and a major
maneuver installation for the Army. It is also the home
of the Army’s most-deployed contingency forces.
Strategically located on the KY/TN State line, the
installation has the unique ability to deploy mission-ready
contingency forces by air, rail, highway and inland
waterway. US Army Garrison (Fort Campbell) mission is
to support expeditionary forces by providing equitable
and efficient services that sustain Fort Campbell and
enhance the well-being of the military community.
According to latest Army projections, Fort Campbell will
INFORMATION AND INSPIRATION
The Chamber hosts periodic events like Women in Business and Power Breakfasts with speakers who educate and
inspire business owners and employees with their experiences. Their successes, challenges and lessons learned
often provide needed encouragement. As one small business Chamber member recently shared,
“Running a small business can be overwhelming. We’re trying to do something we love, but have to juggle that with
finance, marketing, HR law, codes, insurance… and customers! It’s always inspiring and refreshing to hear that other
people have gone through all of this and more... and made it.”
NETWORKING
Chamber events like Business After Hours, Business Before Hours and Golf Tournaments are networking
events designed to provide relationship-building experiences that will benefit members and their businesses or
organizations through added contacts and resources. The relaxed and welcoming environments are ideal places to
engage peers, mentors and prospective customers.
BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
Events like the Home Show and Business Expo are prime opportunities to showcase your businesses products and
services to prospective customers and/or employees. Held throughout the year, these popular events draw large
crowds with a predetermined interest. “We weren’t sure how successful exhibiting at the Home Show would be for
us,” said a member mortgage provider. “But, we’ve gained a dozens of leads every year and secured several new
home loans or refinances directly from our participation in the event.”
Chamber Ambassadors serve as a link between the Chamber Board, staff and the general membership.
Through surveys, networking and interaction, we gather feedback that helps develop the programs and
initiatives our members want and will support. By attending events, Ambassadors facilitate not only our
needed connection to members, but also develop relationships for their own businesses.
