The City of Clarksville Parks and
Recreation Department (CPRD)
maintains over 1,000 acres of parks
and facilities. The 23 City parks
offer a variety of amenities including
playgrounds, picnic areas, walking
trails, and pavilions. Several of the
parks throughout Clarksville also
feature restrooms, open play areas,
outdoor fitness equipment, splash
pads, basketball and tennis courts,
and sports fields. Additionally, CPRD
maintains four public swimming
pools and three recreation centers
with year-round programming for
youth, adults, and seniors.
WALKING/BIKING TRAILS
The Clarksville Greenway is a great
trail to get active or take a scenic
walk through nature. This 5.5-mile
trail is situated in north Clarksville
along the banks of the Red River
and West Fork Creek. It offers a
wonderful experience for citizens
and visitors with views of the river
and beautiful forestry. Like the City’s
other trails, it is a part of the
Rails-to-Trails initiative that
transforms scenic abandoned
railroad rights of way and river
corridors into walking and biking
trails. It has garnered statewide
recognition for environmental
stewardship as well as popularity
among citizens. Native species of
plants and animals can be viewed
throughout the corridor. One of the
unique features of the trail is the
Raymond C. Hand Pass, a 600-foot
pedestrian bridge. Restrooms are
available along the trail as well as
benches and resting areas, outdoor
fitness equipment and a BCycle
station. Access points are located
at Heritage Park, Pollard Road and
Mary’s Oak Dr.
The Riverwalk is a one-mile trail in
McGregor Park on the banks of the
Cumberland River. It passes through
the entirety of McGregor Park,
and continues northward towards
the confluence of the Cumberland
and Red River and the Clarksville
Greenway. The trail has a BCycle
station and plenty of park benches,
picnic tables, outdoor fitness
equipment, lighting and attractive
landscaping. The Riverwalk is also
the venue for several of Clarksville’s
special events including Riverfest
and Christmas on the Cumberland.
Construction on the Red River
Trail East – The Red River Trail,
which connects to the Riverwalk
at McGregor Park, is undergoing
new construction. The new section
will begin at the existing walkway
on the southern bank of the Red
River under the U.S. Highway 41-A
(Providence Boulevard) Red River
bridge, and continue east along
the river for eight-tenths of a mile.
A grant request has been made for
the construction of a new pedestrian
bridge crossing the Red River to
connect this trail to the Greenway.
This bridge will be significant from
both a recreation and transportation
standpoint. Once built, a pedestrian
or bicyclist will be able to start at
the Tiny Town Road and Peachers
Mill Road intersection in Northeast
Clarksville and travel all the way to
downtown without using roadways.
