Austin Peay State University is a comprehensive university
committed to raising the educational attainment
of the citizenry, developing programs and services that
address regional needs and providing collaborative
opportunities that connect university expertise with private
and public resources. Collectively, these endeavors
contribute significantly to the intellectual, economic,
social, physical and cultural development of the region.
APSU prepares students to be engaged and productive
citizens while recognizing that society and the marketplace
require global awareness and continuous learning.
Named for Clarksville native and former Tennessee Gov.
Austin Peay, APSU is one of the region’s key economic
engines, with an economic impact of more than $333
million annually. Austin Peay’s beautiful Clarksville
campus is on 195 acres in downtown Clarksville.
In addition to the Clarksville campus, APSU has locations
at nearby Fort Campbell and at Highland Crest in
Springfield, Tennessee. While the University was
established in 1927 as Austin Peay Normal School,
a small, localized college to train teachers, over the
decades Austin Peay changed from a normal school to
a college, eventually evolving into a university in 1967.
Today, the University has grown to become a major
regional provider of higher education with a student
enrollment of 10,954 – APSU is the fastest-growing
public university in Tennessee.
