hplandmarkdaily.com life & arts the highland park landmark | October 3, 2019 | 19 Rabbi and entrepreneur travels to HP to officiate holidays Erin Yarnall, Editor Rabbi Elan Babchuck, a rabbi and entrepreneur from Providence, RI, spent the High Holidays of the Jewish faith nearly 1,000 miles from home, as he traveled to Highland Park to officiate the High Holiday services for Aitz Hayim Center for Jewish Living, based in Glencoe. Babchuck was present for the congregation’s Rosh Hashanah services, From Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, and will continue to officiate for Yom Kippur, Oct. 8-9. Aitz Hayim regularly invites scholars and guests to speak and officiate for congregants, and Babchuck said he had a special connection to the congregation. One of Babchuck’s colleagues Rabbi Irwin Kula, helped to found Aitz Hayim in 1992, along with Dr. Marc Slutsky and Steven Silberman. “[Kula] sent me a text a while back, and he said ‘Listen, I don’t want to bother you, but I just want to tell you that this community is a really special place,’” Babchuck said. “I don’t think I could have typed any faster in response that of course I want to be a part of it.” While speaking to the congregation, Babchuck spoke of both of his roles, as a fifth-generation rabbi and a third-generation entrepreneur, and how the two blend perfectly together for him. “If one can hold the wisdom tradition called innovation in relationship with the wisdom tradition we call Judaism, and then look for ways in which they can inform one another, I think Musicians Howard Levy (left to right), Larry Gray and Kalyan Pathak perform at the Highland Park Community House. 2 the conversation becomes really rich,” Babchuck said. Babchuck spoke about the traditions within Judaism, and how someone, at some point, must have had some entrepreneurial spirit to create the traditions in the first place. “I think the most important principle we’re going to play with is this idea that every tradition is actually an innovation that made it,” Babchuck said. “We’re going to be singing liturgy that’s almost a couple thousand years old, but at some point it was brand new. It’s had 2,000 years to be shaped and pruned and expanded and pushed back. That’s what we’ve got today.” Joining Babchuck at the services was multiple Grammy winner Howard Levy, a founding member of the band Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. Levy performed alongside musicians Larry Gray and Kalyan Pathak, as well as Aitz Hayim cantor David Landau. In addition to his work as a rabbi and entrepreneur, Babchuck serves as the director of innovation at the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, and in that capacity is also a founding director of the GLEAN Network, a community for faith leaders to discuss the blending of tradition and innovation. “In both of those roles, I’m tasked with inviting leaders to reimagine the role of religion in a changing America,” Babchuck said. “We invite people to recognize that things are changing. We’re now in a moment in which thousands of houses of worship close every single year since 2011.” Throughout his time with Aitz Hayim, Babchuck said he hoped that congregants were able to have some time for self-reflection, and also take an opportunity to think about innovation in religion. “One of my hopes is that at some point during our time together, someone in the room whispers ‘Huh.
