New Trier may have gotten the best of Highland Park in a dual match on Thursday, Sept. 26, at Sunset Valley Golf Course, but the Giants still have a 6-0 Central Suburban League North division record to brag about. After finishing fifth in regionals a year ago, the Giants aim to improve upon that finish this season under their first-year head coach. Berens, a former college golfer, is impressed by the Giants’ work ethic throughout the season. “Our team is constantly wanting to improve and become stronger,” Berens said. “The girls are very motivated and also supportive of each other. Each day we have goals of what we’re going to go out there and try to achieve. I’d say a lot of the girls worked towards that, I’m very proud of how they’re progressing, and we’re looking forward to conference come next week.” Juniors Samantha Fahn and Charlotte Harrigan had strong rounds versus the Trevians, and Emmi Schwenk and Abby Kovitz went up against New Trier’s top golfers. In what’s been a successful rookie season at the helm of Highland Park, Berens has done her best to be supportive and coach each girl individually. “While we’re a team, each of the girls have their own swings, their own approaches to their golf game,” Berens said. “How can I just work with them Samantha Fahn chips her ball out of a sand trap. on an individual basis, but at the same time how can we come together as a team. We’re really focusing on that this year, to be strong as a team.” The Giants will need a full team effort in the CSL tournament next week. Berens says the young team is continuing to work on the mental aspect of the game, which will be crucial in the tournament and in regionals later on. “They’ve been working hard on their golf game and their mindset,” Berens said of the Giants. “They’re working through good strokes, not so great strokes and having to be able to reset to make it a good round for them.” GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING Highland Park 250, Niles North 115 Quincy Winston won four events for the Giants on Friday, Sept. 27. Matthew Gidron had a 17-yard touchdown rush on the Giants’ final drive of the morning. Sophomore Shamir Wilkie had an interception on Maine East’s second-to-last drive. The Giants defense came away with four turnovers against the Blue Demons, a sign that the defense is peaking at the right time. “They’re playing together, they’re playing fast, good things happen when you sprint to the football,” Lindquist said. “We’re keeping an emphasis on high-tempo, higheffort and making good things happen.” The Giants continue their conference schedule on Friday, Oct. 4 at Vernon Hills. Highland Park beat the Cougars by 10 a year ago, but there’s plenty of work to be done if the Giants want to get back to a .500 record. Volpentesta says the Giants need to get healthy and improve on the mental aspect of the game before taking on Vernon Hills. “We really need to make sure we practice and keep our assignments clear,” Volpentesta said. “It’s all mental at this point, we have to get our assignments right.”
