Playing one half of football on Friday, Sept. 27, and another half 15 hours later, the Giants (2-3 overall, 1-0 CSL North) handled it well in a 50-6 win over Maine East that ended on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Maine East High School. Highland Park took a 16-6 halftime lead on Friday night, but lightning forced the game to resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Head coach David Lindquist’s team outscored the Blue Demons (0-5) 34-0 in the second half. “They did very well,” Lindquist said of his team’s response to returning to Maine East on Saturday morning. “We made an emphasis on being able to focus when we got out this morning, our kids came out and responded very well and had a lot of fun.” Giovanni Volpentesta starred for the Giants, totaling three touchdowns and three 2-point conversions. The junior fullback totaled 168 scrimmage yards in a game that favored the running attack due to the weather. “It’s always fun when you get to run,” Volpentesta said. ‘When I can keep my balance, it’s easier to make my cuts on kids that are slipping on the grass.” After the Giants defense forced a punt to open the game, Highland Park’s offense put together a nine-play, 84-yard scoring drive. Volpentesta then ran in the 2-point try, and the Giants took an 8-0 lead 10 minutes into the game. The Blue Demons then came right back with their own score, connecting on a 28-yard touchdown pass of their own. They failed to tie it up in the conversion attempt, and Highland Park held onto a two-point advantage with less than nine minutes in the half. Both teams took turns punting afterwards until the Giants defense scored its first points of the year. Sam Fishman’s sack forced the ball out of the Maine East quarterback’s hands, and Erick De La Cruz scooped it up. The junior ran 22 yards to the end zone, and Volpentesta ran in his second two-point try, giving Highland Park a 16-6 advantage at halftime. Once play started up again on Saturday, Sept. 28, the Giants kept rolling. After forcing a Blue Demons punt, Volpentesta racked up 65 rushing yards on the next Highland Park drive to extend the Giants’ lead. His two-yard scoring plunge and ensuing twopoint conversion put Highland Park up by 18 points. Defensive lineman Chris Hernandez then recovered a muffed Maine East snap to give the Giants offense possession at the Blue Demons’ 39- yard line. 10 plays later, Volpentesta completed the hat trick, scoring from five yards out. The extra point was no good, so the HPHS lead stayed at 24. “Gio’s a kid that we can hang our hat on when we need him to spread out and catch the football, or if we put him in the backfield and run downhill he can do the same thing,” Lindquist said of his fullback. “He’s a very reliable football player, I think he showed that yesterday and today.” Maine East put together a strong drive on the next possession, but a Blue Demons touchdown was called back on a holding penalty. Anthony Nelson picked off Maine East’s quarterback on the following play to end the Blue Demons threat and put Highland Park in the driver’s seat. The Titans senior took a lead early in 22nd Century Media’s latest Athlete of the Month compeition and never gave it up, giving the school its second monthly honor in 2019. South’s running back and linebacker had to face some compeition later in the contest, but Prikos finished off with the win.
