years on air, KCR is at a critical juncture.

directors who can help steer this invaluable 

community radio resource into the 

future, in a crowded, competitive media

Keep your home smoke and vape free 

We all want our homes to be healthy and happy places for 

ourselves and our families. One way to achieve this is by creating 

a home that’s free from the chemicals and toxins found 

in secondhand smoke and vapour. 

The health risks of secondhand smoke from smoking cigarettes 

are well known, which can include lung cancer, heart 

disease and breathing problems among adults and more frequent 

and severe asthma attacks among children. 

While secondhand vapour contains far fewer chemicals 

than secondhand smoke, it is not harmless. There is some 

evidence that e-cigarette use increases the level of nicotine 

and other chemicals on indoor surfaces. 

Below are some tips for a healthier home, which you can 

use if you or someone in your family smokes or vapes: 

Store Products Safely: Vaping liquid containing nicotine is 

poisonous if swallowed or absorbed through the skin, particularly 

to young children. When buying a container of vaping 

liquid with nicotine, look for one that has a child resistant 

closure and a poison hazard symbol. Keep all tobacco and 

vaping products and accessories out of the hands of children. 

Avoid Smoking And Vaping Indoors: There is no safe level 

of exposure to secondhand smoke; it is hazardous for everyone, 

especially for children. The health effects from exposure 

to secondhand vapour are still unknown. However, the risks 

are expected to be much lower compared to smoke from a 

tobacco product.

The project to rehabilitate the airside pavement included 

he removal of asphalt on Runway 16-34, the taxiways 

nd Apron A, the excavation of the granular base and the 

nstallation of new asphalt and pavement markings. 

Well maintained runways, taxiways and aprons ensures 

afe usage by aircraft, passengers and crews and helps proect 

costly airport safety assets during airport operations. 

The runway condition reporting system provides timely, 

ccurate and precise wireless recording and reporting of 

unway conditions and relays the information directly to 

ircraft to help ensure safe landings. 

Funding of $4,426,845 was provided for these projects 

hrough Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance 

rogram. 

This funding comes from Transport Canada’s Airports 

apital Assistance Program (ACAP). Since the Program 

tarted in 1995, the Government of Canada has invested 

ore than $882.7 million for 948 projects at 186 airports

Industry asked to remain cautious 

about open burning 

The BC Wildfire Service reminds its industry partners 

to use caution when carrying out industrial and high-risk 

activities, since the Southeast Fire Centre is experiencing a 

heightened number of Category 3 incidents. 

Since April 1, 2019, the Southeast Fire Centre has 

responded to 158 wildfires, about 32% of which have been 

human caused. The fire danger rating in the Southeast Fire 

Centre is predominantly “low.” However, anyone conducting 

an open burn must stay vigilant and burn responsibly 

while following all burn regulations. 

Anyone planning to conduct an open burn in the Southeast 

Fire Centre must check the local venting index before 

starting to burn. The Venting Index must be “good” on the 

day the fire is lit and “good” or “fair” on the following day.

The Unknown Remains... 

Sometimes, a box is just a box. In rare cases, a box multiplied 

is a container ship, representing globalization, human migration 

and capitalism. Such is the case for multidisciplinary artist, 

UBC professor and Chinese immigrant Gu Xiong, who 

is exhibiting his work The Unknown Remains at Touchstones 

Nelson Museum of Art and History through to November 3. 

The show, filling both galleries, will feature a variety of mediums 

including photographs from the Shawn Lamb archives, 

portraits of the Chinese community in Nelson, historical 

newspaper articles, drawings from Gu’s collection and pages of 

his sketchbooks which were filled when Gu was a teenager in 

China and living in a labour camp. It also hosts a container ship 

made of 1,500 cardboard boxes and a wall of 1,500 portraits of 

immigrant workers from Ontario and British Columbia. 

Gu was born in Chongqing, Sichuan, China in 1953 and 

at age 17 was sent to a labour camp where, over the next five 

years, he honed his drawing skills by filling sketchbooks with 

scenes of rural life. He immigrated to Canada in 1989 after a 

successful year long residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts, 

just months before the political turmoil in China that led to 

the Tiananmen Square Massacre. 

Although it was a difficult road, Gu knows he made the 

right decision to immigrate. “Canada is a good place for me to 

express my ideas through art and share it with other people,” 

he said, “which is very important to me.”
