$1.8 million
approved for
contentious
Main North Rd
bus lanes
• By Claire Booker
FUNDING HAS finally been
confirmed for the contentious bus
lanes on Main North Rd.
The $1.8 million project, which
was scheduled to start in July, will
see bus lanes put in between Winston
Ave and Grassmere St.
Work on the project is now expected
to start early next year and
should take about four months to
complete.
The issue of bus lanes on Main
North Rd has been contentious
since it was first raised in 2017
when it was revealed the project
would mean a loss of on-street
parking for businesses between
Harewood Rd and Winston Ave.
The other concern for residents
was the turning movements at the
intersection of Grassmere St and
Main North Rd. Both of these key
issues were mitigated by altering
where the bus lanes would start
and approving traffic signals.
Improvements will include a
full-time bus lane running north
from Winston Ave to Grassmere
St, a signalised intersection at
Grassmere St, walking and biking
improvements, layout change to
the Northlands Shopping Centre
car park entrance and more trees
on Main North Rd.
Tina ‘wows’ at awards show
• By Claire Booker
ST ALBANS designer Tina
Hutchison-Thomas ‘wowed’ the
judges at the annual World of
WearableArt competition, taking
out third place in the mythology
section.
Mrs Huthchison-Thomas is
the only Christchurch designer
to have won an award
this year, and last year
she won the New Zealand
Design Award.
“Only in New
Zealand would you
get the opportunity
to compete against
international talent
from the confines of
your garage,” she said.
This year’s WearableArt
awards show
featured 108 finalist garments by
115 designers from 22 countries
and regions competing for a
share of more than $180,000 in
prizes.
Mrs Hutchison-Thomas’ garment
The Moirai- the Shape of
Us, was made up of three different
garments based on Roman
and Greek mythology, where the
Moirai are three sisters of fate or
destiny.
“I wanted to keep working
beautifully on stage. The detailing
this year is laser cut felt and
a free-motion embroidery technique
I created,” she said.
Mrs Hutchison-Thomas
first learnt to sew at Cobham
Intermediate when she was 11,
and now she is renowned on the
WearableArt stage.
The winner of
the mythology section
this year was a
designer from the
United States, and the
second prize went to a
Taiwanese designer.
This year the 115
finalist designers were
presented with six
design briefs, which
subsequently, form
the six worlds of the
stage show.
Three of these thematic worlds
are recurring - Aotearoa, Avantgarde
and Open, and three
are new for 2019 - Mythology,
Transform and White.
Dame Suzie Moncrieff, WoW
founder and resident judge said
each year gets harder to judge as
there are so many outstanding
entries.
“I have been astounded by the
wide range of materials used
and the intricacy and originality
GREEN LIGHT: After a more
than two-year process, NZTA
has approved funding for the
Main North Rd bus priority
project.
Council will
pay for half
of the costs
•From page 1
Last week, the NZ Transport
Agency told Nor’west News funding
was originally considered
unlikely in the current 2018-2021
period.
“After the recent review and
reprioritisation of National Land
Transport Programme projects,
funding was agreed to,” an NZTA
spokesman said.
The bus lane project has been
a key topic of debate between
Papanui Ward city councillor
Mike Davidson and Papanui-
Innes Community Board member
John Stringer, who have opposing
views on the project.
The project was approved by
the city council in October last
year, which will pay for half of the
project costs.
Community pantry in high demand
• By Claire Booker
FOOD IS flying off the shelves
of a community pantry in an
Edgeware park.
The community pantry in
Packe St park is an initiative
started by the Edgeware Korean
Presbyterian Church and the
Packe Street Park and Community
Garden group.
The two groups joined forces
to find a way for surplus food to
be used for people in need in the
community.
The pantry is stocked every
week or 10 days, and overnight,
the food is gone.
The park already had a book
and plant exchange operating,
and one of the park co-ordinators,
Helen Kidd suggested the
group should collaborate with
Italian racing experience for 12-year-old karter
•From page 1
The young karter qualified for
the superfinal by winning New
Zealand’s Vortex Mini national
sprint championship. He then
qualified a second time by winning
the New Zealand ROK cup
championship, an accumulation
of points across four New Zealand
events, becoming the first
Kiwi competitor to secure both
superfinal qualifying entries.
STOCKED UP: Mi Hee Yom, a volunteer from the Korean
Presbyterian Church puts a fresh stash of donated food for
people in need in the Edgeware community.
members of the church who had
the initial idea of the community
food pantry.
“An old fridge was purchased
and set up, and it is being well
Hawke’s Bay karter Tom
Bewley was runner-up to Louis
in the ROK Cup, and therefore
earned the second Superfinal
entry in the Vortex Mini ROK
category.
This is Louis’ first European
competition and the young
champion says he’s very excited
and a little bit nervous. He’s put
in plenty of groundwork, watching
races at the South Garda
used already. Food items donated
and put in the fridge go
very quickly, and as it becomes
better known, and the community
garden yields fresh produce
track on YouTube and racing
hard to defend his McLaren
Racing Mainland Series title at
KartSport Canterbury just prior
to departing for Italy.
“I’ve been watching previous
year’s finals and think I’ve
worked out where to pass on this
circuit,” he said.
Louis’ main goal is to reach
the A final with the top 30 competitors
– the finals take place on
in abundance, we expect it to be
very well used,” Ms Kidd said.
Jaehee Kim is the community
ministry leader at the church,
which has been in St Albans for
16 years.
Mrs Kim said the idea came
about because the church wanted
to give to the community and
provide a space to share food.
“We noticed the food has been
taken very quickly. It confirmed
to us that there are needs in the
community. We recently have
received more donations to the
pantry, but we still need more.
Through the community pantry
we hope to develop community
spirit to grow together,” she said.
Ms Kidd said volunteers from
both groups have come together
for working bees to support each
other.
October 12.
“The track looks to be very fast
and I will need to qualify well
to have a chance of making the
A final. I’m in a good team with
the Parolin AV Racing team who
have won it in previous years.
I can’t wait; it will be so much
fun,” said Louis.
Ultimately, he would like to
go all the way to formula 1 or
IndyCars.
Bupa Bethesda Care Home
welcomes new
dementia community
As Bupa Bethesda Care Home’s
Chris McCulloch, Care Home
Manager and Mark Bravo, Unit
Coordinator take families on tours of
their new dementia community, their
smiles show a team full of pride in their
new development. They have much to be
proud of, the 20 bed dementia community
has opened recently, welcoming four
residents already.
With 70,000 Kiwis living with dementia,
Alzheimers New Zealand predicts the
number will increase to more than
170,000 by 2050. Earlier this year, Bupa
was named the first aged care provider
to receive the national Dementia Friendly
Award from Alzheimers New Zealand.
Chris says the Christchurch community
has been asking for more focus on
dementia and the new Bethesda
community goes some way to fulfilling the
need for more dementia specialist care.
“We’re really pleased to have this
new community for people living
with dementia. It’s a safe and warm
environment with gardens surrounding
the rooms and comfortable lounge areas
for families and residents to relax. I’m sure
people will be very comfortable here,”
Chris says.
More good news for Bupa Bethesda as
the care home recently received its third
consecutive four year accreditation from
the Ministry of Health.
“I’m so proud of the team here, they work
so hard for the residents and our track
record speaks for itself,” Chris added.
Climate issue leads to award Special October
events for cyclists
• By Claire Booker
EMMA TAYLOR’S generation
is full of leaders striking for
climate action, and she used this
passion to create a science fair
entry.
The 17-year-old St Margaret’s
College pupil placed third-best at
the NIWA Canterbury-Westland
Schools Science Fair.
More than 200 students from
26 schools entered the event held
at Canterbury University.
Emma’s entry focused on the
impact of ocean acidification
and the entry explored how
pH and temperature affect
the concentration of calcium
carbonate that green-lipped
mussel shells leach.
“I wanted to do a project
that would have a real-world
application. Climate change
and ocean acidification affect
us all, especially here in New
Zealand with our primary
industries and the communities
they support. New Zealand’s
territory is largely ocean with it
playing an important part in our
culture and heritage. We have
a responsibility to care for it,”
Emma said.
This year was Emma’s first
time entering the science section
of the fair, but she entered the
technology section in 2017.
Her entry took months of
CONCERNED: Emma Taylor won third-best in fair at the NIWA
Canterbury-Westland Schools Science Fair for her entry on
ocean acidification and its impacts.
‘Climate change and ocean
acidification affects us all.’
– Emma Taylor
work totalling about 30 hours to
complete the entry.
Emma said climate change is a
huge issue for young people.
“Around the world, young people
have been at the forefront of
the voices that call for measures
to avert climate change. Our
generation is becoming more and
more environmentally concerned
and proactive,” she said.
Emma chose to focus her
science fair entry on greenlipped
mussels because the
seafood industry is an important
primary industry for New
Zealand.
She said because greenlipped
mussels live close to the
shoreline, they are particularly
vulnerable to our changing temperature.
Thomas James from Burnside
High School won best in fair,
and Rātā Airey and Petra Arthur
from Cashmere High School
placed second.
CHRISTCHURCH cyclists will
spin their wheels for Biketober
and get involved in special events
across the city.
More experienced cyclists will
be able to join the Canterbury
Mountain Bike Club on a social
ride around Bottle Lake Forest
on Sunday.
Keener participants will have
from the start of Biketober until
October 25 to take up the Passport
Challenge.
An online map features more
than 40 destinations where
cyclists can pick up the unique
code and fill up their “passports”.
Some spots offer deals for anyone
arriving by bike during October.
A prize pool valued at over $7000
value is up for grabs.
You can also race into the free
Passport One-Day Challenge on
October 26. Powering up from
9am, see how many destinations
you can get to by 4pm.
Cyclists will become artists,
drawing a picture with their
bikes using GPS navigation
during the Biketober Strava Art
Contest.
They will also be able to explore
the city while taking in the SCAPE
Public Art season. People are
invited to use the city council’s
SmartView to find their favourite
NOR’WEST NEWS
PEDAL POWER: Biketober
will involve a number of
cycling events across
Christchurch, including a
social ride around Bottle Lake
public artworks and take a selfie to
win a prize.
Cyclists can also join the
Climate Crisis Progress Ride on
October 17. Guided by experts,
the free ride will provide an opportunity
to look at architecture,
transport and the environment
and to learn about moves to deal
with the climate crisis.
City council planning and delivery
transport manager Lynette
Ellis says Biketober emphasises
the importance of the city’s sustainable
approach to transport.
“Christchurch’s investment in
cycleways is vital to addressing
climate change, creating healthier
communities and reducing
congestion, so it is great to see
residents make the most of the
new network,” Ms Ellis said.
Photo hunt keeps the past alive
THE ARTS Centre as we know it
has been part of Christchurch’s
landscape for generations –
but this glimpse of one of its
buildings standing alone on a
dusty unpaved road is unfamiliar
to many of us.
From 1877 until the mid-1950s,
the Arts Centre was buzzing
with students, as Canterbury
College (now Canterbury
University) and Christchurch
Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools
used the buildings as a campus at
various times.
The buildings were transferred
to the Arts Centre Trust Board
when Canterbury University
completed its move to Ilam in the
1970s.
Designed by prominent
architect Benjamin Mountfort,
this Gothic Revival tower served
as the Observatory and Biology
building, with a telescope gifted
by James Townsend located in
the Observatory right at the top
when this photo was taken.
The historic Townsend
Telescope, a six-inch refractor
made by Thomas Cooke and
Sons of York, England, in 1864,
was recovered from the rubble of
the Arts Centre tower after the
February 22, 2011, earthquake.
The Arts Centre and
Canterbury University plan to
restore the building and the
telescope.
HISTORY: This photo of the Observatory, Canterbury College,
circa 1895, was entered in the 2013 Christchurch City Libraries’
Photo Hunt.
The Beca Christchurch
Heritage Festival 2019 starts
on Monday and this year, as
part of the festival, Christchurch
City Libraries will celebrate 10
years of the Christchurch Photo
Hunt.
Over the past decade, the photo
hunt has collected hundreds of
great photos like this one, and
Christchurch City Libraries
hopes people will dust off their
collections and unearth some
more treasures.
The photo hunt competition
runs from now until October 31.
Your photo hunt photos will be
carefully scanned and preserved
as part of the Christchurch City
Libraries’ collection.
They will then be loaded
onto the Discovery Wall at
$1500 raised
for breast
milk bank
A QUIZ fundraiser has raised
more than $1500 for the Rotary
community breast milk bank.
The bank, based at St George’s
hospital in Merivale, is the only
centre in New Zealand to supply
pasteurised donor breast milk to
babies in need outside the neonatal
unit.
More than 150 babies have
been supported with the “liquid
gold” since the bank’s opening
last year.
The service is run entirely
by volunteers, with mothers
donating their excess breast
milk.
The milk bank runs entirely
on community support,
therefore fundraising is
required to meet the annual
operating costs of $30,000.
The Rotary Club of New
Horizons held the quiz night at
the Elmwood Trading Co and
more than 100 participants went
along to support the cause.
Anna Bush, president of
Rotary Christchurch New
Horizons was grateful with the
amount raised for the cause.
“This is thanks to the
generosity of those who
participated in the quiz,” she
said.
LOCALLY OWNED
SINCE 1964
Smiths Mitre 10 all started in 1964, when Reg Smith
began trading as a coal merchant at 3 Waimairi Rd.
Over time Reg expanded these humble beginnings
into a complete hardware store, joining the Mitre 10
group in 1981.
Reg opened a second store in Farrington Ave,
Bishopdale in 1983. The store expanded a couple of
times on the same site, before moving into an old
supermarket site at 135 Farrington Ave in 1988. It
didn’t take long for this store to become over flowing
with products, so it was excellent timing when in
1998 the old Farmers building next door became
available, tripling the size of the store.
The Smiths were looking for a larger site again when
the earthquakes badly damaged the Sanitarium
buildings, leading to a shortage of Marmite.
Sanitarium and Smiths came up with an agreement to
share the site for a number of years, so Marmite could
be continued to be made and a MEGA store built. In
2017 the production of Marmite in Christchurch had
discontinued and the space now became available
for the existing Mitre 10 Mega store to develop larger.
October 2019 saw the expansion complete on the
existing site. The retail hall has increased by 30% with
6,850 additional products, the outdoor garden area
has doubled. Also having a fully functional Columbus
café installed means 54 Harewood road is even more
MEGA than ever and we are all really excited to show
you the new store, after 36 years in the making.
Papanui Mega is the sister store to Mitre 10 Mega
In your
neighbourhood
So much Moore than
just a drycleaners
Moores Drycleaners on Papanui Road
is so much more than just a drycleaning
business - it is part of the fabric of Merivale
itself. Their terrific customer service,
expertise and highly-professional standards
have seen them succeed on the same spot
for over half a century. In fact, it is the
oldest business still operating in the same
location in Merivale, and also is the oldest
family-owned and operated drycleaners
in the whole of
Canterbury.
What makes it
such a local success?
Owner Greg Moore’s
father began Moores
Drycleaning back in
1961 and Greg joined
him straight out of
school. Having been
there ever since, his
own knowledge is
unparalleled, and it is
the focus on meeting
the needs of customers
that makes them stand
out. These days, his daughter has joined the
team, making her the third generation to work
in the business.
Their focus is on providing a terrific
service to local clients and meeting all their
drycleaning needs. Whether you are spring
cleaning and want to freshen up all your
drapes, duvets and bedding, or have toughto-remove
spots, they are on hand to help.
They will make sure that garments such as
suits and dresses look as good as new when
they return them to you, and they are experts
at working with delicate fabrics in evening
gowns and cocktail dresses. They are also
the go-to drycleaners for wedding dresses,
recommended by many of the region’s bridal
salons to their new brides. In fact, they are
just about the largest drycleaners for wedding
dresses in the south island.
In spite of their long tradition in this
industry, Moores Drycleaning have moved
with the times. They now have an ecocleaning
machine which uses a solution of
plant extracts as its cleaning agent which is
far friendlier to the environment. In fact,
they have been leading greener approaches
to drycleaning as they have been recycling
for over 40 years, their plastic bags are
biodegradable and their coat-hangers are
manufactured from recycled plastic which
they encourage their customers to recycle and
return.
You can find them at 178 Papanui Road,
where they are open six days a week (closed
Sundays) or give them a call at 03 355 5942.
They will be happy to help.
Pithie, CBHS claim national road titles
SPORT
• By Jacob Page
LAURENCE PITHIE showed his class in
leading the way for the Christchurch Boys’
High School road cycling team at the
nationals at Feilding last week.
Pithie won two gold medals at the
junior track world championships in Germany
last month and appeared to have no
trouble switching back to the road.
He helped CBHS retain the Sir Bernard
Fergusson Trophy in winning the under-20
team time trial and then he won
individual gold in the under-20 points
race and road race respectively.
Christchurch Boys’ clocked 23min
38.97sec for the 16km loop, holding off
the efforts of the Cambridge Boys’ High
School combination by just 0.031sec – the
blink of an eye. Palmerston North Boys’
High School were third at 16sec behind.
Long time mentor Gary McNaughton
said he was thrilled with the performance.
“These boys have been with me since
year nine and I have seen them grow into
fine young men. For them to go back to
back is an amazing feeling, with four riders
at the end finishing the job,” he said.
“The friendship and camaraderie
amongst themselves, their coaches and
with me means I consider them family.”
The success continued for Christchurch
Boys’ High School.
It proved a triple treat for the double
junior track world champion Pithie who
has quickly picked up his form on the
WINNERS AGAIN: The CBHS under-20 road cycling team have won their
age-group title for the second consecutive year. PHOTO: CBHS CYCLING
road since his brilliant efforts on the track
in Germany last month.
Pithie edged under-19 national representative
Xander White (Cambridge
High) and fellow Madison world champion
Kiaan Watts (Hamilton Boys) in a
sprint finish in the road race.
There was more solid team work from
his Christchurch Boys’ High teammates
in the under-20 Points Race for Pithie
TALENTED: Laurence Pithie has a
bright future in cycling.
to dominate the sprints with 12 points
ahead of Watts and Jensen Foster (Saint
Kentigern).
It was made doubly challenging as rain
fell with the high winds for the boy’s race,
which was reduced from 12 to seven laps.
“It was treacherous conditions so I went
hard as I knew I could put some pressure
on from the start,” he said.
“The Christchurch Boys’ High boys got
around me towards the end and helped
me bring it home.
“We started off the weekend taking
home the gold in the team time trial
which set-up the boys well and we were
all in good spirits. And we had a couple
of boys away in the break today – Griffin
Spencer and Guy Yarrell – and it all
played out well to bring it into a sprint on
the final lap and I took it from there.”
Nearly 600 riders from 84 schools
took part in the 52nd annual schools
championship, staged over three days.
medium-sized saucepan, heat the
oil and butter, add fennel seeds
and shallots and cook gently
for 3min. Add the sliced fennel
bulbs and cover with a lid and
cook for about 15min until the
fennel has softened and become
sweet and fragrant.
Add the zest of one lemon and
juice from half.
Add the rice and stir well so
the rice gets coated. Cook until
the rice becomes lightly toasted.
Add wine and stir well until it
has been absorbed into the rice.
Ladle the hot stock in one ladle
at a time. Stir well between each
addition so the rice sucks up the
stock and becomes creamy.
Continue until the rice is
tender and creamy and the sauce
around the rice is thick and silky.
If too thick, loosen with a little
more stock, or if too runny cook
out for a little longer. You may or
may not need all the stock.
Adjust the seasoning and
finish by adding half the grated
parmesan and stir to combine.
To make the fennel and olive
dressing, chop the fennel fronds
and add to the olives and zest of
one lemon.
Stir together, add the olive
oil and enough lemon juice to
balance the dressing.
To serve the risotto, spoon
on to your plate, sprinkle over
a little more grated parmesan.
Spoon over a little fennel and
olive dressing.
Save your ripe bananas
to make this sweet after
dinner treat
Banana loaf
Ingredients
140g butter, softened, plus extra
for the tin
140g caster sugar
2 large eggs, beaten
140g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 ripe bananas, mashed
50g icing sugar
Handful dried banana chips, for
decoration
Directions
Heat oven to 180 deg C.
Butter a 900g loaf tin and line
the base and sides with baking
parchment.
Cream 140g softened butter
and 140g caster sugar until light
and fluffy, then slowly add two
beaten large eggs with a little of
the 140g flour.
Fold in the remaining flour,
one tsp baking powder and two
mashed bananas.
Pour into the tin and bake
for about 30min until a skewer
comes out clean.
Cool in the tin for
10min, then remove to a wire
rack.
Mix 50g icing sugar with twothree
tsp water to make a runny
icing.
Drizzle the icing across the top
of the cake and decorate with a
handful of banana chips.
