Main North Rd
bus lanes

FUNDING HAS finally been
confirmed for the contentious bus
lanes on Main North Rd.
The $1.8 million project, which
was scheduled to start in July, will
see bus lanes put in between Winston
Ave and Grassmere St.
Work on the project is now expected
to start early next year and
should take about four months to
complete.
The issue of bus lanes on Main
North Rd has been contentious
since it was first raised in 2017
when it was revealed the project
would mean a loss of on-street
parking for businesses between
Harewood Rd and Winston Ave.
The other concern for residents
was the turning movements at the
intersection of Grassmere St and
Main North Rd. Both of these key
issues were mitigated by altering
where the bus lanes would start
and approving traffic signals.
Improvements will include a
full-time bus lane running north
from Winston Ave to Grassmere
St, a signalised intersection at
Grassmere St, walking and biking
improvements, layout change to
the Northlands Shopping Centre
car park entrance and more trees
on Main North Rd.

Tina ‘wows’ at awards show

Hutchison-Thomas ‘wowed’ the
judges at the annual World of
WearableArt competition, taking
out third place in the mythology
section.
Mrs Huthchison-Thomas is
the only Christchurch designer
to have won an award
this year, and last year
she won the New Zealand
Design Award.

featured 108 finalist garments by
115 designers from 22 countries
and regions competing for a
share of more than $180,000 in

Community pantry in high demand

of a community pantry in an
Edgeware park.
The community pantry in
Packe St park is an initiative
started by the Edgeware Korean
Presbyterian Church and the
Packe Street Park and Community
Garden group.
The two groups joined forces
to find a way for surplus food to
be used for people in need in the
community.
The pantry is stocked every
week or 10 days, and overnight,
the food is gone.
The park already had a book
and plant exchange operating,
and one of the park co-ordinators,

Climate issue leads to award Special October
events for cyclists

is full of leaders striking for
climate action, and she used this
passion to create a science fair
entry.
The 17-year-old St Margaret’s
College pupil placed third-best at
the NIWA Canterbury-Westland
Schools Science Fair.
More than 200 students from
26 schools entered the event held
at Canterbury University.
Emma’s entry focused on the
impact of ocean acidification
and the entry explored how
pH and temperature affect
the concentration of calcium
carbonate that green-lipped
mussel shells leach.
“I wanted to do a project
that would have a real-world
application. Climate change
and ocean acidification affect
us all, especially here in New
Zealand with our primary
industries and the communities
they support. New Zealand’s
territory is largely ocean with it
playing an important part in our
culture and heritage. We have
a responsibility to care for it,”
Emma said.
This year was Emma’s first
time entering the science section
of the fair, but she entered the
technology section in 2017.

seafood industry is an important
primary industry for New
Zealand.
She said because greenlipped
mussels live close to the
shoreline, they are particularly
vulnerable to our changing temperature.

spin their wheels for Biketober
and get involved in special events

More experienced cyclists will

Photo hunt keeps the past alive
THE ARTS Centre as we know it
has been part of Christchurch’s
landscape for generations –
but this glimpse of one of its
buildings standing alone on a
dusty unpaved road is unfamiliar
to many of us.
From 1877 until the mid-1950s,
the Arts Centre was buzzing
with students, as Canterbury
College (now Canterbury
University) and Christchurch
Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools
used the buildings as a campus at
various times.
The buildings were transferred
to the Arts Centre Trust Board
when Canterbury University
completed its move to Ilam in the
1970s.
Designed by prominent
architect Benjamin Mountfort,
this Gothic Revival tower served
as the Observatory and Biology
building, with a telescope gifted
by James Townsend located in
the Observatory right at the top
when this photo was taken.
The historic Townsend
Telescope, a six-inch refractor
made by Thomas Cooke and
Sons of York, England, in 1864,
was recovered from the rubble of
the Arts Centre tower after the
February 22, 2011, earthquake.
The Arts Centre and
Canterbury University plan to
restore the building and the
telescope.

The Beca Christchurch
Heritage Festival 2019 starts
on Monday and this year, as
part of the festival, Christchurch
City Libraries will celebrate 10
years of the Christchurch Photo
Hunt.
Over the past decade, the photo
hunt has collected hundreds of
great photos like this one, and
Christchurch City Libraries
hopes people will dust off their
collections and unearth some
more treasures.
The photo hunt competition
runs from now until October 31.
Your photo hunt photos will be
carefully scanned and preserved
as part of the Christchurch City
Libraries’ collection.
They will then be loaded
onto the Discovery Wall at
CELEBRATION: To check
out the Beca Christchurch
Heritage Festival events taking

$1500 raised
for breast
milk bank
A QUIZ fundraiser has raised
more than $1500 for the Rotary
community breast milk bank.
The bank, based at St George’s
hospital in Merivale, is the only
centre in New Zealand to supply
pasteurised donor breast milk to
babies in need outside the neonatal
unit.
More than 150 babies have
been supported with the “liquid
gold” since the bank’s opening
last year.
The service is run entirely
by volunteers, with mothers
donating their excess breast
milk.
The milk bank runs entirely
on community support,
therefore fundraising is
required to meet the annual
operating costs of $30,000.
The Rotary Club of New
Horizons held the quiz night at
the Elmwood Trading Co and
more than 100 participants went
along to support the cause.
Anna Bush, president of
Rotary Christchurch New
Horizons was grateful with the
amount raised for the cause.
“This is thanks to the
generosity of those who
participated in the quiz,” she
said.

Smiths Mitre 10 all started in 1964, when Reg Smith
began trading as a coal merchant at 3 Waimairi Rd.
Over time Reg expanded these humble beginnings
into a complete hardware store, joining the Mitre 10
group in 1981.
Reg opened a second store in Farrington Ave,
Bishopdale in 1983. The store expanded a couple of
times on the same site, before moving into an old
supermarket site at 135 Farrington Ave in 1988. It
didn’t take long for this store to become over flowing
with products, so it was excellent timing when in
1998 the old Farmers building next door became
available, tripling the size of the store.
The Smiths were looking for a larger site again when
the earthquakes badly damaged the Sanitarium
buildings, leading to a shortage of Marmite.
Sanitarium and Smiths came up with an agreement to
share the site for a number of years, so Marmite could
be continued to be made and a MEGA store built. In
2017 the production of Marmite in Christchurch had
discontinued and the space now became available
for the existing Mitre 10 Mega store to develop larger.
October 2019 saw the expansion complete on the
existing site. The retail hall has increased by 30% with
6,850 additional products, the outdoor garden area
has doubled. Also having a fully functional Columbus
café installed means 54 Harewood road is even more
MEGA than ever and we are all really excited to show
you the new store, after 36 years in the making.
Papanui Mega is the sister store to Mitre 10 Mega
Hornby and Mitre 10 Beckenham.

Pithie, CBHS claim national road titles

LAURENCE PITHIE showed his class in
leading the way for the Christchurch Boys’
High School road cycling team at the
nationals at Feilding last week.
Pithie won two gold medals at the
junior track world championships in Germany
last month and appeared to have no
trouble switching back to the road.
He helped CBHS retain the Sir Bernard
Fergusson Trophy in winning the under-20
team time trial and then he won
individual gold in the under-20 points
race and road race respectively.
Christchurch Boys’ clocked 23min
38.97sec for the 16km loop, holding off
the efforts of the Cambridge Boys’ High
School combination by just 0.031sec – the
blink of an eye. Palmerston North Boys’
High School were third at 16sec behind.
Long time mentor Gary McNaughton
said he was thrilled with the performance.
“These boys have been with me since
year nine and I have seen them grow into
fine young men. For them to go back to
back is an amazing feeling, with four riders
at the end finishing the job,” he said.
“The friendship and camaraderie
amongst themselves, their coaches and
with me means I consider them family.”
The success continued for Christchurch
Boys’ High School.
It proved a triple treat for the double
junior track world champion Pithie who
has quickly picked up his form on the

fell with the high winds for the boy’s race,
which was reduced from 12 to seven laps.
“It was treacherous conditions so I went
hard as I knew I could put some pressure
on from the start,” he said.
“The Christchurch Boys’ High boys got
around me towards the end and helped
me bring it home.
“We started off the weekend taking
home the gold in the team time trial
which set-up the boys well and we were
all in good spirits. And we had a couple
of boys away in the break today – Griffin
Spencer and Guy Yarrell – and it all
played out well to bring it into a sprint on
the final lap and I took it from there.”
Nearly 600 riders from 84 schools
took part in the 52nd annual schools
championship, staged over three days.

Cooking with what is in season
Lemons and fennel are in
season and they make a
perfect partnership. This
subtle combination works
beautifully on its own
as a light dinner or will
accompany seafood, pork
and lamb
Lemon and fennel risotto
Ingredients
1500ml vegetable stock, hot
2 lemons
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp butter
2 shallots
1 tsp fennel seeds, crushed
3 bulbs fennel, sliced thinly and
tops reserved
400g risotto rice, such as arborio
or carnaroli
200ml dry white wine
100g parmesan cheese, finely
grated
1 cup fennel fronds
½ purple olives, stones removed
50ml olive oil
sea salt and cracked pepper
Directions
Bring the stock to the boil. In a
medium-sized saucepan, heat the
oil and butter, add fennel seeds
and shallots and cook gently
for 3min. Add the sliced fennel
bulbs and cover with a lid and
cook for about 15min until the
fennel has softened and become
sweet and fragrant.
Add the zest of one lemon and
juice from half.
Add the rice and stir well so
the rice gets coated. Cook until
the rice becomes lightly toasted.
Add wine and stir well until it
has been absorbed into the rice.
Ladle the hot stock in one ladle
at a time. Stir well between each
addition so the rice sucks up the
stock and becomes creamy.
Continue until the rice is
tender and creamy and the sauce
around the rice is thick and silky.
If too thick, loosen with a little
more stock, or if too runny cook
out for a little longer. You may or
may not need all the stock.
Adjust the seasoning and
finish by adding half the grated
parmesan and stir to combine.
To make the fennel and olive
dressing, chop the fennel fronds
and add to the olives and zest of
one lemon.
Stir together, add the olive
oil and enough lemon juice to
balance the dressing.
To serve the risotto, spoon
on to your plate, sprinkle over
a little more grated parmesan.
Spoon over a little fennel and
olive dressing.
Save your ripe bananas
to make this sweet after
dinner treat
Banana loaf
Ingredients
140g butter, softened, plus extra
for the tin
140g caster sugar
2 large eggs, beaten
140g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 ripe bananas, mashed
50g icing sugar
Handful dried banana chips, for
decoration
Directions
Heat oven to 180 deg C.
Butter a 900g loaf tin and line
the base and sides with baking
parchment.
Cream 140g softened butter
and 140g caster sugar until light
and fluffy, then slowly add two
beaten large eggs with a little of
the 140g flour.
Fold in the remaining flour,
one tsp baking powder and two
mashed bananas.
Pour into the tin and bake
for about 30min until a skewer
comes out clean.
Cool in the tin for
10min, then remove to a wire
rack.
Mix 50g icing sugar with twothree
tsp water to make a runny
icing.
Drizzle the icing across the top
of the cake and decorate with a
handful of banana chips.
