Charity founder honoured with hero award

Buckland has been hailed 

a hero for her work helping 

mothers with sick children in 

hospital. 

Mrs Buckland started the 

charity One Mother to Another 

after experiencing fear and 

stress when her daughter was 

admitted. 

She has won a Westfield Local 

Hero award for her contribution 

to the community along with 

a $10,000 grant to continue the 

work. 

The charity provides gift 

bags to mothers and carers in 

the Children’s Acute Assessment 

or Neonatal Intensive 

Care units at Christchurch 

Hospital. 

Mrs Buckland said she is 

honoured to receive the 

award.

district has increased by 12.6 per 

cent in the last month and 23.2

WE PUT questions about the planned 

quarry near Weedons to local body election 

candidates hoping that they get the nod 

from voters this weekend (see pages 4-5). 

A number responded, others didn’t. 

To be fair, sitting councillors and Mayor Sam Broughton’s 

hands were tied somewhat because of rules surrounding the 

Resource Management Act. 

But the quarry is a big election issue and readers need to know 

where sitting councillors and candidates wanting to topple them, 

stand on the issue, or at least get a feel for where they stand. 

But it is a shame not all did reply. One individual took us to 

task over asking questions because of the RMA constraints. 

Tell that to the those who will be living near the quarry.

Water quality to benefit 

from 100,000 new plants at lagoon 


MORE THAN 100,000 plants 

are being planted at the newlyconstructed 

Ahuriri Lagoon 

wetland near Tai Tapu in a bid to 

improve biodiversity and water 

quality. 

It is hoped 

the 81,000 

aquatic plants 

will help to 

filter the water 

and 48,000 terrestrial 

plants 

will provide

habitat to native 

birds and 

other animals. 

The project is being run by the 

co-governers of Lake Ellesmere 

which consists of the district 

council, Environment Canterbury, 

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, 

Christchurch City Council and 

Department of Conservation. 

Co-chair Steve Lowndes of 

ECan said the project was a 

massive undertaking but phenomenal. 

“The site looks so different 

from when we were here in 

February to bless the project. It 

fits the ECan ethos of moving 

from planning to on-the-ground 

action, he said. 

The Ahuriri Lagoon is situated 

between Tai Tapu and Motukarara 

and drains into Lake 

Ellesmere. 

The Whakaora Te Ahuriri 

project started in July last year 

and is expected to cost $3.5 million. 

The plan included the construction 

of a wetland, plantings 

and the implementation of a 

Mātauranga Māori monitoring 

programme to gauge the changing 

value of the site for iwi. 

Engineering and earthworks 

were completed last month 

marking the construction of the 

wetland and the next stage of 

planting has begun. 

Mr Lowndes said the project 

will improve water quality, biodiversity 

and mahinga kai values 

in the area. 

“The wetland is fed by the 

Halswell River and that will 

improve water quality by 

reducing nutrient and sediment 

passage and creating an open 

water area designed for mahinga 

kai.

“It will also provide a pathway

The wetland is also being 

set up as a demonstration site 

to show what can be achieved 

with constructed wetlands for 

nutrient stripping. 

This will require intensive 

monitoring and demonstrating 

results to landowners in the 

catchment, Mr Lowndes said. 

The project is expected to be 

completed by 2022. 

Residents 

slow to 

cast votes 


ONLY 20 per cent of enrolled 

residents have voted so far in the 

local body elections. 

On Monday, a total of 8067 

votes out of a possible 40,301 had 

been returned, voting closes on 

Saturday. 

The return is more than seven 

per cent lower than it was at the 

same point in the last local body 

elections in 2016. 

The ward with the most enrolled 

voters, Selwyn Central, has 

shown the worst voter return of 

them all. 

There are 16,609 enrolled voters 

in the ward but only 2808 

have returned their election 

papers. 

It comes as electionz.com has 

said local authorities appear to be 

heading for a poor result.

for 42 of the country’s 67 

councils and managing director 

Steve Kilpatrick said voting is 

currently 50,000 lower than 

expected.

as I would have

if a quarry was 

proposed near 

to my home. The matter will 

be determined by the Resource 

Management Act and it is 

inappropriate for the mayor to be 

either for or against a particular 

proposal. To support a good 

process I have attended two 

public meetings in Templeton 

with our staff and ECan staff, 

along with representatives from 

Christchurch City Council. I 

have also spoken with a number 

of individuals on the matter. I 

have ensured our process and 

staff responses are open and 

transparent and have encouraged 

the appointment of independent 

commissioners. I have also 

supported a strengthening 

of setbacks in the upcoming 

District Plan review. Our 

continued development as a 

district requires access to gravel 

through quarries, the location of 

the quarries will be determined 

through the RMA process.

I understand Fulton Hogan 

has invested significant funds 

into this consent and consider 

it commercially viable. A 

question I have for Fulton 

Hogan is, have they considered 

purchasing neighbouring 

properties most affected by 

their proposal, establishing a 

self- imposed buffer zone to 

protect their operation from 

reverse sensitivity issues from 

neighbours located further 

afield, as a financial trade-off for 

their location being close to the 

city thus reducing the journey 

time of product delivery? If this 

land was not needed in the future 

the properties could be on-sold. 

In this case if the consent was 

granted new owners would be 

aware that they were purchasing 

near a quarrying operation unlike 

those who live there at present.

obligation to ensure every step of 

the process is fully debated and 

not just on behalf of those directly 

affected but the district as a whole.

try to ensure the process is 

undertaken correctly. We need 

to try and guide the hearing to 

recommend the best solution 

and mitigations for the local 

community if it is approved. I 

believe for future applications of 

this type, as the district council 

we need to guide Ecan as the 

regional council to review the 

planning rules and Regional 

Policy Statement. This review 

should be able to implement the 

consideration of appropriate 

mitigations to be taken into 

account before an application is 

submitted and avoid long and 

expensive hearings.

from the Wheatsheaf Quarry in 

Broadfield for several years, and 

heard the machinery every day 

(in spite of the bund and several 

tree lines between us). The dust 

coating our windows made it 

pointless to clean them, and we 

worried about the quality of the 

air our children were breathing. 

I am keen to seek the inclusion 

of setbacks and other restrictions 

when the District Plan and 

Long Term Plan are reviewed, 

as residents should never be put 

in this position again. Legally, 

Fulton Hogan can apply; 

ethically, it’s the wrong location.

Simon Lewis for as long 

as he can remember. 

The Greendale resident 

talks to Devon Bolger 

about his passion for 

astronomy and work as 

an astrophotographer at 

the West Melton 

observatory 

What was it that first 

attracted you to astronomy? 

Even as a kid, I’ve always 

been interested in science and 

technology. As a boy, I was 

always pulling things apart and 

trying to fix them, nothing was 

safe in my house. I started to 

grow this passion for space and 

our universe so this is kind of 

a natural progression for me 

because I’ve taken that interest 

in science and technology and 

applied it to astrophotography 

which is what I specialise in. 

What do you like about 

astrophotography? 

Astrophotography really 

includes a large part of science 

and astronomy because you’re 

trying to look at different type of 

objects using cameras and you 

have to try to understand the

dynamics of what you’re looking 

at, the size and scale of what 

you’re looking at, and also the 

type of object you’re looking at 

and even when it might be visible. 

You have to put some effort into 

it and that’s the bit I like, there’s 

a science behind it. You have to 

understand the night sky and 

the object your aiming for and 

then kind of frame it up from 

there to create something that’s 

pleasing to the eye. Everybody 

that does astrophotography say 

it’s very much an art form in its 

own right. There’s result that’s 

the correct one to aim for, you 

just give it the finish that is your 

interpretation of the subject and 

one which makes you happy. 

Is there anything that you 

find particularly exciting when 

you photograph it? 

I like to look at things that 

aren’t quite mainstream. There 

are definitely major celestial 

objects that are commonly 

photographed and if you picked 

up an astronomy magazine you’d 

see pictures of them in there 

but I like to photograph more 

low key objects that are just as 

interesting. They’re not always as 

photogenic perhaps but they’re 

very interesting in their own 

right. For example, there’s an 

object near the Southern Cross 

called the Corona Australis that 

is what’s called a dark nebula, 

which is actually dust that is 

blocking the light from stars so 

if you look at it you can’t actually 

see any light through it because 

they’re being blocked by the dust. 

I quite like taking photographs 

of them and think they’re nice 

to look at because they’re not 

photographed very often. 

What is your favourite 

constellation? 

Not a constellation in 

particular, as our southern night 

sky is really fantastic there is so 

much to look at, so choosing one 

as a favourite is really hard. If 

you look directly to the south of 

us you’ve got Carina which is a 

fabulous constellation which has 

the Carina Nebula and what’s 

called the Homunculus which 

is a bubble of gas round a huge 

star that’s a 100 times bigger than 

ours. It’s a really beautiful area 

to photograph. Orion is also a 

really amazing constellation to 

look at too. It’s in our summer 

evening sky and it has a number 

of beautiful objects within it to 

image. If you look up and to the 

right from the stars on the belt 

you’ll see the Orion Nebula. It’s 

so big and so bright you can see 

it without a telescope even by 

naked eye as a fuzzy patch, you 

can really see it very clearly in a 

pair of binoculars.

Darfield Artweek will celebrate its 38th Opening 

Night on Friday, 11 October, 7pm, at the Darfield Rec 

Centre. 

“We are pleased to have Fiona Simpson, Art Curator 

at the University of Lincoln, as this year’s judge for 

the Artweek competition. She will announce the 

winner of a number of awards sponsored by local 

businesses, including the coveted $2000 Premier 

Award”, said Malvern Community Arts Council Chair, 

Philip Baldwin. 

A number of local artists received awards in 2018, 

including potter Alan Hooper, Lorraine Natusch, Alice 

Olds, Soon-Lee Spicer, and Alison Staniland. 

MCAC anticipates that approximately 300 artworks 

will be on exhibit, including painting, photography, 

sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, wood carving, and 

fabric works. As many as 140 artists from Selwyn 

District, the city of Christchurch, and countrywide 

enter each year. 

Darfield Artweek comprises two exhibitions this year. 

The Darfield Rec Centre will hold the main exhibition, 

with works that are in competition for awards. At 

the same time Selwyn Gallery will feature work by 

members of the Textile and Fibre Arts Network. 

“This exhibition’s variety of crafts—quilting, spinning 

and weaving, lacework, 

embroidery, and felting— 

are all creative, colourful, 

and skilfully executed.

is stunning”, Mr Baldwin 

concluded.

Do you think are aliens 

out there? 

Well, I’m always seeing 

strange and weird things 

out there at night. There 

are always satellites, space 

junk and meteors passing 

by us, but I think it would 

be a very lonely place and 

a very, very strange occurrence 

if human life was the 

only life in the universe. 

The problem I think is 

actually the distances 

involved and as an astronomer 

you’re acutely aware 

of how far away some of 

these objects are. Even in 

our own galaxy, which is 

around 200,000 light-years 

from edge to edge, our 

radio signals have only 

managed to get around a 

hundred light-years distant 

from earth so far, so I’m 

not surprised we haven’t 

run into anybody yet. 

You are from England, 

how long have you lived in 

the district for? 

I visited New Zealand 

in 2008 while I was living 

in Europe and I settled in 

West Melton after doing 

some travelling and decided

it’s a beautiful place to live, 

it’s amazingly dark at night 

and we have some land for 

my wife’s horses and room 

for my observatory.

Astronomical Society? 

I’m on the society’s 

committee and I hold a

couple of roles. I’m the 

webmaster and handle the 

website as well ticketing 

for events and Facebook 

updates. I’m also the 

membership officer. I 

also manage the content 

on the website and write 

the newsletter that we 

publish online monthly, 

we also publish a written 

magazine too. I play an 

active role in our public 

night programmes. Every 

Friday night we get about 

80 to 90 people visiting 

the observatory. I might 

drive one of the telescopes 

or just wander around 

with binoculars talking 

to the kids and showing 

them what’s in the sky 

and explain what they’re 

seeing. The kids love it, 

they’re always asking 

things like: ‘Oh can we see 

a black hole?’ So you can 

really have a lot of fun just 

wandering around talking 

to them and explaining 

the night skies. We do that 

from the end of March 

until the end of September 

and during July we also 

do KidsFest where we are 

open every night if it’s 

clear, for 15 nights in a row.

‘We know that feeling of loneliness’

“I feel like I’m just an ordinary 

mother who is doing something 

that I would have liked someone 

to do for me in my hour of need. 

“It is surreal to think the 

community have named me a 

hero for it but I’m very honoured 

and grateful for the accolade. It 

has truly blown me away,” she 

said. 

The charity currently supplies 

around 130 gift bags per month 

to the hospital. 

Mrs Buckland started the 

charity with her friend Joy Reid 

around three years ago following 

a health scare when her daughter 

Arabelle was 18-months-old. 

“It came about because Joy and 

I had both been in hospital with 

sick kids and we knew how lonely 

and isolating that can feel and we 

wanted to find a way to support 

other mums who will go through 

that journey too,” she said. 

Mrs Buckland took Arabelle to 

the GP when she developed what 

seemed like a stubborn nappy 

rash. 

When the doctor had a look, 

he told her that the rash looked 

like it could be meningitis and 

they needed to go to the hospital 

immediately. 

“My mummy brain just heard 

the word meningitis and went 

into an absolute frenzy in my 

head.”

calm but Mrs Buckland was 

struggling to cope. 

“When we were there she was 

actually feeling fine, it was me 

that was a mess. I was crying and 

I remember thinking I need some 

support and that’s where the 

original idea came from. 

“I didn’t have any family here. 

I had friends I could call to look 

after my toddler but not having 

that family here, like a lot of people 

nowadays don’t, it does just 

make it a lot harder,” she said. 

Mrs Buckland said their aim 

is to put a smile on the face of a 

mother or carer. 

“Because we know that feeling

we got through it and they will

Drop in interest rates sparks 

first home buyer interest

the $500,000 to $550,000 price 

range which is now right in 

the wheelhouse for first home 

buyers with incentives allowing 

them to purchase up to that 

price such as welcome home 

loans and Kiwisaver incentives 

on new built properties.” 

Mr Twiss said there was a 

drop in interest rates in August 

which has peaked the first home 

buyer interest and also lead to 

increased activity. 

The property report also 

shows the median house price 

in the district has dropped 

by two per cent in the last 

month. 

It now sits at $544,000 

compared to $555,000 last 

month. 

Mr Twiss said this could 

be due to the recent housing 

oversupply in Rolleston. 

“We see prices tending to 

flatten rather than increase 

when there is an oversupply 

which explains part of the 

median house price drop. 

“In summary, there has been 

a slight oversupply in Rolleston 

around the price point that first 

home buyers are looking and 

with interest rates at historic 

lows this has created strong 

activity in this market without

property,” said Mr Twiss.

E-SCOOTER TRIAL VOTE 

A report into Lime and local 

company Lava’s e-scooter 

proposals will be tabled at 

a district council meeting 

this week. In May, district 

councillors voted to give 

Lime Scooters a trial once 

it has worked with council 

staff on safety concerns. The 

concerns were around speed, 

safety, geo-fencing, costs, and 

bylaw implications. In the 

report, regulatory manager 

Billy Charlton said all of the 

concerns have been addressed 

to a point where a trial can be 

considered. At the meeting, 

district councillors will vote on 

allowing both companies a sixmonth 

trial. 

PLANTING EVENT 

Around 120 volunteers were 

in Hororata for the Te Kakariki 

Greenway Canterbury Trust’s 

second planting event for the 

year. More than 3000 natives 

were planted on four properties 

including the Thwaits family 

farm where 15 species of 

trees such as manuka, toe 

toe and ribbonwood were 

planted. The trust has opened 

applications on their website 

for new planting sites until 

mid-October at www.kakariki. 

org.nz 

West Melton speed 

indicators on the move 


SPEED INDICATOR devices 

will be rotated between different 

locations in West Melton in a bid 

to improve road safety. 

The West Melton Residents 

Association owns two of the 

devices and has decided to move 

them more often than initially 

planned. 

Chairman Tim Schurr said the 

decision was made by the association 

to try to improve safety. 

“The old locations were based 

around all of the construction 

happening on the main road 

with the new community centre 

and now that it’s opened we 

think the best practice is moving 

the signs around. 

“We wanted to put them in 

places children would be present 

and it would have more of an 

impact for them,” he said. 

The devices were originally 

stationed on West Coast Rd but 

have now been moved to 

Weedons Ross Rd, one at the 

northern approach to West 

Melton School, and one at the 

southern approach to the West 

Melton Domain.

West Melton residents have 

had concerns around road safety 

in the township for years. 

Last October, safety improvements 

at the Weedons Ross Rd 

and State Highway 73 intersection 

were put on hold by the 

NZTA due to funding shortfalls. 

NZTA figures show there have 

been 11 crashes at the intersection 

since 2006. 

One was serious and 10 were 

minor or did not cause injury. 

NZTA director regional 

relationships Jim Harland said 

the intersection did not meet 

the new threshold for funding 

under the investment assessment 

framework. 

A petition has been started in 

a bid to have the safety upgrades 

brought forward. 

It currently has nearly 800 

signatures and will be presented 

to Parliament by retiring Selwyn 

MP Amy Adams.

TWO TEENAGERS have been 

given the opportunity to put their 

business knowledge into practice 

at their school’s market day. 

Rolleston’s Kyra Clarkson and 

West Melton’s Ruby Lundy are 

year 10 students at Villa Maria 

College and were challenged to 

create a product and food item to 

sell to the college community. 

“We had to choose products to 

sell, identify the unique selling 

point, develop a business plan, 

make prototypes and work on 

our marketing skills,” said Kyra, 

whose group is called Super Mugs. 

“We decided to sell reusable 

coffee cups, filled with a ready- tobake 

cake mix and cookie dough.” 

Ruby said: “It was tricky to 

come up with a product that was 

unique and special so that we 

could attract lots of customers, 

but we’re really happy with our 

end product.” 

Commerce is an optional subject 

for year 10 students at Villa 

Maria College and is a combination 

of accounting, economics 

and business studies. 

The students will decide on a 

charity to donate a portion of 

their profits to after the market.

Horse riding trumps kidney disease 


WEST MELTON teenager 

Maddie Collins is not letting her 

kidney disease get in the way of 

her passion for horse riding. 

The 15-year-old and her pony 

Trig came first in the 16 years 

and under dressage division at 

the Stringer Trophy equestrian 

competition. 

Her team, Carnmore Equestrian, 

also took home the overall 

trophy for their combined efforts. 

Maddie’s mother, Sarah 

Manson-Collins, said watching 

Maddie win was a special moment. 

“For me personally, watching 

Maddie ride after being in the 

hospital for a few days with 

shingles and knowing how uncomfortable 

and painful they’ve 

been, is incredible. 

“I do feel very proud that she 

can really dig deep and think: 

‘I’m not going to let this disease 

and this failing kidney define 

me, I am going to do what I want 

to do’,” she said. 

A week out from the Stringers 

Trophy competition, Maddie 

developed shingles. 

‘She gave me the fright of 

my life. Maddie woke me up in 

the middle of the night saying: 

‘Mum I have a rash all over my 

body,’ and I thought oh my god

having to get IV treatment to 

slow it down,” Mrs Manson- 

Collins said.

The pair spent the next two 

days in the hospital trying to get 

rid of the infection. 

“Shingles make you tired, 

grumpy and sore so it was very 

tough.” 

The infection cleared up in 

time and Maddie was able to 

compete in the competition. 

“There were so many teams 

entered. We had really hoped we 

could take the trophy away but 

there were a lot of great riders out 

there. We are very pleased with 

the result.”

Mrs Manson-Collins said her 

daughter gets a lot of joy out of 

horse riding. 

“There will be days at home 

where she will be really struggling 

with all the medication, all 

the hospital visits and the tests 

and I can take her riding and you 

just see the stress and the worry 

fall off of her. 

“She is at one with her pony 

Trig, it’s just amazing to watch,” 

Maddie has been riding for 

about four years now and her 

skills have begun to outgrow her 

27-year-old pony. 

“Trig will always be her forever 

pony but we are desperately looking 

for a younger dressage pony 

for her.” 

Since being diagnosed with 

nephrotic syndrome, a kidney 

disease, in 2008, Maddie has 

received two different kidneys. 

More than $150,000 has been 

raised for Maddie’s journey 

which has seen her travel both 

around the country and internationally 

in an attempt to find a 

kidney match. 

In 2012, a kidney from her 

father was rejected by her body. 

Maddie’s current kidney was 

donated in January last year and 

she is currently attempting to 

fight off infections in order to 

stop her body rejecting it.

How about council getting back to 

actually doing what it was intended 

to do in the first place, handle 

the infrastructure of the district 

– roads, drainage, waste, etc and 

keep out of commerce. I object to 

this bylaw on cars displaying a for 

sale sign on them. 

The fact that it is for sale is 

not so much the issue, but the 

fact that it is parked probably on 

some roadside grass which is not 

meant for that purpose. 

The car pictured in the photograph 

appears to be safely 

parked, I can only assume it is 

currently registered and warranted 

and is not obscuring the 

roadway any more than a car 

parked without a sign on it, so 

where is the problem? 

If the car is currently registered 

and the WoF is current then it can 

be parked on any road legally for 

whatever time period is specified 

by parking signs – if these are 

present, provided it is parked 

correctly in accordance with 

the existing Traffic Regulations, 

Transport Act and council bylaws. 

There are already laws in place 

regarding the parking and use 

of vehicles, use them instead of 

making more and I would venture 

to suggest that you repeal the 

existing bylaw about requiring

reading. It was a complete 

reversal from what NZTA had 

been saying to us as recently as a 

fortnight ago. 

We had been saying for some 

considerable time that the project 

was a year behind, but had always 

been decried as not understanding 

how the work was proceeding. 

The entire process has seen 

massive overruns and very 

poor planning. A number of 

engineers have left as have many 

skilled workers. I can only 

speak about the area around our 

property but from speaking with 

workers it appears to be across 

the board. 

In general, the standard of 

planning and oversight by the 

contractors has been very poor 

and at times entirely missing. The 

only redeeming factor has been 

the work done by the people from 

AECOM. 

IT WAS MY birthday this week, 

which means it’s almost been a 

whole year that I’ve been the stayat-home 

parent. 

And in spite of the fact that this 

can be really hard work, it’s no job. 

I still wake up in the morning and 

am stoked about every coming 

day. Even if I’m waking up because 

a tiny person with too much energy 

is forcing my eyes open. 

It’s an absolute privilege to see 

my daughter grow and learn while 

forming a close bond with her. 

Part of her growth that I’ve noticed 

a lot of this past week is that 

she is becoming one sassy wee 

extrovert. She’s at the stage where 

she loves being centre of attention 

or at the very least, part of the 

action. I guess this stage might 

never end, but right now she’s got 

to try everything and be noticed 

while doing it. 

At our last couple of Wā Pēpe/ 

Babytimes, she’s spent the whole 

time in the middle of the group, 

dancing to the songs and bathing 

in the adulation of her fans (the 

other parents). My place has been 

downgraded to halfheartedly 

singing and dancing along so as 

not to feel too left out.

so this drew raucous laughter 

from him and a sort of giggling 

cringe from me.

WORLD ENDURO champion 

Hamish Macdonald is back 

home for a month off to “party” 

after a gruelling six-month 

campaign in Europe. 

The 20-year-old returned to his 

family home at West Melton over 

the weekend as the FIM 125cc 

youth enduro world champion 

after overcoming a serious injury 

in the middle of the season to 

claim the title. 

“I’ll have a month off the 

bike to catch up with friends 

and family and just party for a 

while,” he said. 

“I was signed on a one-year 

deal so I knew it was a case of 

make or break for me, which I 

guess is a fair bit of pressure but 

it has paid off,” he said. 

The result means he is likely 

to be back competing in Europe 

SPORT 

next year but nothing has been 

confirmed at this stage. 

“It’s always been a dream of 

mine to be a world champion,” 

he said. “It hasn’t always been 

easy, it’s been a hard road and 

there have been plenty of injuries 

but hopefully this isn’t my only 

world title. 

“To come home as a world 

champion is simply amazing.” 

Macdonald competed in the 

championship two years ago as a 

rookie and impressed in finishing 

second which saw him sign a 

one year deal with Sherco Racing 

for 2019.

trained by myself and because 

I was mostly on my own it was 

hard to figure out if I was going 

fast enough to be a genuine contender 

but it all worked out.” 

Macdonald has the interesting 

distinction of winning a world title 

before claiming a national title. 

He said of suffering a broken 

scapula in his shoulder and his 

clavicle in May: “It knocks your 

confidence when you’ve been 

riding so well. I was off the bike 

for over a month and you’d be 

surprised how much your fitness 

drops away. 

“Round five when I got back, 

it was tough, I struggled my arse 

off that day.” 

Macdonald credited his family 

for their unwavering support and 

always believing in his dream. 

He said to have so many 

friends and family there in 

France with him when he won 

made it all the more special even 

if the celebratory champagne did 

sting his eyes.

Have you voted yet? With just a few days left 

until voting closes in the local elections, it’s 

time to get your votes in. 

Votes must be received by the Council by 12 midday on Saturday (12 October). 

The best option this week is to drop voting papers in to a Council ballot box. These are available 

all week at the Council’s Rolleston offices, at the Darfield, Leeston, Lincoln and Rolleston libraries, 

Selwyn Aquatic Centre, Lincoln Event Centre and West Melton Community and Recreation Centre 

during normal opening hours, and on Saturday up to 12 midday. 

Anyone who is eligible to vote but hasn’t received voting papers, or who has moved since 

they last enrolled, can apply for a special vote by contacting the Council on 347 2800 or email 

electoral.officer@selwyn.govt.nz. 

Voters can also apply for a special vote at the Darfield, Leeston, Lincoln and Rolleston libraries 

during open hours. 

“There’s still time to vote, so it would be great to see more people getting their votes in over the 

next few days,” says deputy electoral officer Stephen Hill. 

“Local elections are an important way for people to have a say on issues that are important in their 

local communities, and on how services and facilities are planned and developed for the future.” 

Preliminary results for the Selwyn elections are expected to be available late Saturday afternoon, 

and will be published on the Council website as soon as they are available.

“This time we were crying happy tears”

In Ayyam O’Brien’s Rolleston home, neatly arranged wall décor fills the room with the words ‘live’, 

‘laugh’ and ‘love.’ On the fridge is a list of meals planned two weeks in advance. 

It looks effortlessly organised for the young mother of two. Yet life has not always fallen so neatly into place. 

Ayyam was five when her family left Iraq as refugees. Ayyam and an older sister lived in Turkey for two 

years travelling by bus to Istanbul to apply for asylum in different countries. They were rejected three times. 

“Every time we’d drive back on the bus, we were just crying the entire way, because we were so over 

living in Turkey and being so poor.” 

On their fourth application, New Zealand accepted the family. “I will never forget that moment. All of us 

were up that night just dancing. This time we were crying happy tears.” 

Arriving in 2000, she says New Zealand has given her everything she hoped for. 

“I feel like my country is New Zealand. I love how it’s accepted me as a person.” 

The one thing she missed was the community feel. Something she and husband Chris did not feel living in 

Auckland, spending up to four hours a day travelling in the car. “We’re very allergic to traffic,” she says. 

That all changed when they were offered the chance to work in Rolleston. 

Today, Ayyam coaches her son’s football team, organised a quiz night raising $4,000 for the Prostate 

Cancer Foundation and started The Dancing Bellies Selwyn Facebook page. She loves the people, the 

lifestyle and vibe of Selwyn. 

“It’s that feeling that I feel here that I guess I never knew I had until I moved here,” she says, “I thought, 

I actually really do love a community feeling, how everyone’s there for each other”.

ROADS 

On the roads this week 

Last few days for voting in 

local elections 

Footpath construction is taking place in Darfield on Torlesse Crescent, Coleman 

Place and Snowdon Place. These footpaths will be closed during the construction. 

Springs Road will be closed to all traffic between Birchs Road and Trents Road 7am 

Saturday 12 October to 6pm Sunday 13 October. A detour will be in place. 

Protecting our natural heritage 

A lone beech tree and a love of the high country led Ian Reed to 

protect some of Selwyn’s significant natural heritage. 

With Council and Environment Canterbury support, Mr Reed has 

protected four Significant Natural Areas (SNAs) on his farming block 

in the Malvern Hills. 

There are 71 SNAs in Selwyn, which are home to significant native 

plants and animals, which the Council helps landowners to identify, 

protect and manage. 

SNAs are at the heart of efforts to preserve our indigenous 

biodiversity, Council Biodiversity coordinator Andy Spanton says. 

“It’s like our natural heritage that’s part of our historic landscape. 

We’re seeing a change in attitude towards protecting, managing 

and restoring our native heritage. We have a tremendous group of 

landowners, and our community, who we work with to protect and 

manage significant sites.” 

Mr Reed says his love of the high country and native plants 

converged when a friend told him a lone tree he admired in a gully 

was a native beech. 

A botanist from the University of Canterbury identified it as a locally 

rare black beech and identified a wetland on the property that was 

later assessed as an SNA. 

With Council funding he fenced the area around the beech seven 

years ago and the wetland last year. Both are thriving with Elizabeth 

and David Forest planting the area around the beech with about 2000 

plants native to upper Selwyn and supplied by Graeme McArthur. 

Mr Reed’s biodiversity efforts have also spread to the family farm 

near Darfield where he is replacing removed shelter belts with native 

bushes, supported by the Canterbury Plains Water Environmental 

Management fund. 

“I have a son saying, ‘Why don’t we plant pines, we will have shelter 

in two years’, and I say ‘Use a longer vision, if you just plant pines 

for now you may regret it later. Work in generations and plant with 

the long term in mind.’”

We’re holding two community recycling drop-off days next month in 

Malvern and Ellesmere. 

This is a great chance to clean up your shed, backyard and garden 

and drop off garden waste, scrap metal, tyres, child car seats and 

e-waste to a local collection point. 

Garden waste: Prunings, tree trimmings and weeds. Charges apply. 

Scrap metal: Metals, bicycles, BBQs, small appliances, whiteware, 

tins, pots and pans. Free. 

Tyres: Car $3, 4WD $5 

Child car seats: $15 per seat. 

E-waste: Flat screen and CRT TVs and monitors, computers, 

printers, phones, cameras, stereos and cables. Charges may apply. 

Mixed recycling: Clean cardboard and paper, clean and empty 

glass jars and bottles, plastic bottles and containers (1–7) and clean 

steel and aluminium cans. No lids please. Free of charge. 

We don’t accept general rubbish, flax, cabbage tree leaves, trees or 

branches over 10cm diameter, gas bottles, items containing oil or 

fuel or tyres covered in dirt, polystyrene and soft plastic.

A pop up museum will be helping celebrate Selwyn’s history. 

The interactive and engaging museum will be at the Ellesmere A&P Spring Show at the Ellesmere 

Showgrounds on Saturday 19 October. 

The district’s museums, historic societies and heritage collection holders have come together with 

the Council to create the pop up museum with a modern twist as part of the Beca Christchurch 

Heritage Festival. 

The museum will provide an interactive experience using historic films, online tools and displays to weave 

together tales of Selwyn’s heritage and enable visitors to journey through time and across Selwyn. 

The museum is a great opportunity to enjoy and discover the things that have made the district what it 

is today, District arts coordinator Becca Bouffandeau says. 

“It’s been a huge collaborative effort from many different groups to put together something informative 

and fun that really speaks to who we are as a district.” 

Homebush Stables will also be holding an open day on Sunday 20 October 10am–4pm as part of the 

festival. The museum, historic buildings and gardens are on the historic family property of the Deans 

family, who were the first European settlers on the Canterbury plains.

Two bronze medals at 

nationals for versatile cyclist

ROLLESTON COLLEGE cyclist 

Nick Rush did not have much of 

a break during the first week of 

the school holidays. 

The 14-year-old competed at 

the national secondary schools’ 

road championships at Palmerston 

North, winning two 

bronze medals in the under-15 

points and road race before 

straight to Dunedin for the 

national secondary schools’ 

mountain bike championships 

last weekend where he finished 

fourth in his age-group. 

Nick said he was pleased to 

earn two medals at Palmerston 

North by using his strategy of 

making early attacks during 

both races to set a tone. 

“Going out fast early is something 

that suits me,” he said. “In 

the points race, I knew I’d have 

to conserve energy eventually, 

which I did, and the road course 

suited me.’’ 

The 18km road race was 

contested in windy conditions. 

Nick said on reflection he 

could have earned a higher placing 

if it was not for a couple of 

tactical errors. 

“After I made my attack, I

spent 10km on my own which 

was too long and at the end I 

forgot where the finish line was 

so I started sprinting 400m out 

instead of 200m, but that is how 

things go. 

“The road course suited 

me overall with its short, 

punchy climbs, while the 

points race is always tough, as 

the only rider from Rolleston 

College, so to finish third was 

pleasing.” 

Nick said his mountain bike 

nationals were hampered with a 

high heart-rate during the 20km 

race in Dunedin. 

“My average heart rate for that 

hour was 192. 

“I just couldn’t get the rest 

going downhill that I hoped I 

would have, and our race was 

delayed which meant I didn’t get 

the warm-up I wanted.” 

Nick will now set his sights 

on the national age-group 

mountain bike championships 

in Dunedin in January. 


SELWYN UNITED managed to 

take the spoils at their own South 

Island football tournament at 

Foster Park over the weekend. 

For the second year, the club 

hosted the South Island 10th 

grade festival with the Selwyn 

United Black team winning the 

Martin Allen Trophy in a penalty 

shootout against FC Nelson. 

Both teams were level at 3-3 

at full-time and the end of extra 

time, with the shootout going 

Selwyn United’s way. 

South Canterbury Green won 

the second-tier Jym Findlay Trophy 

while Waimak United won 

the 10th grade. 

Ground manager Gerard de 

Rooy said with 36 teams and 

more than 360 kids taking part, 

it was one of the largest football 

events in the South Island.

“Saturday’s wet weather made 

things interesting but the finals 

day on Sunday was wonderful 

and everything went smoothly. 

He said the festival approach 

as opposed to a tournament was 

based around trying to strike a 

balance between competition 

and getting kids involved. 

He said with it being a sevena-side 

tournament and squads of 

10, each player would be involved 

more in games and get more 

touches on the ball. 

“That’s where we are seeing 

success, if kids can feel like they 

are a part of something they are 

more likely to stay in the sport.’’ 

It is the second year Selwyn 

United has run the event, which 

drew teams from Nelson, the 

West Coast and South Canterbury. 

Mr de Rooy said the event 

would be back again next year.

Photo hunt keeps the past alive 

THE ARTS Centre as we know it 

has been part of Christchurch’s 

landscape for generations – 

but this glimpse of one of its 

buildings standing alone on a 

dusty unpaved road is unfamiliar 

to many of us. 

From 1877 until the mid-1950s, 

the Arts Centre was buzzing 

with students, as Canterbury 

College (now Canterbury 

University) and Christchurch 

Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools 

used the buildings as a campus at 

various times. 

The buildings were transferred 

to the Arts Centre Trust Board 

when Canterbury University 

completed its move to Ilam in the 

1970s. 

Designed by prominent 

architect Benjamin Mountfort, 

this Gothic Revival tower served 

as the Observatory and Biology 

HISTORY: This photo of the Observatory, Canterbury College, 

circa 1895, was entered in the 2013 Christchurch City Libraries’ 

Photo Hunt. 

building, with a telescope gifted 

by James Townsend located in 

the Observatory right at the top 

when this photo was taken. 

The historic Townsend 

Telescope, a six-inch refractor 

made by Thomas Cooke and 

Sons of York, England, in 1864, 

was recovered from the rubble of 

the Arts Centre tower after the 

February 22, 2011, earthquake. 

The Arts Centre and 

Canterbury University plan to 

restore the building and the 

telescope. 

The Beca Christchurch 

Heritage Festival 2019 starts 

on Monday and this year, as 

part of the festival, Christchurch 

City Libraries will celebrate 10 

years of the Christchurch Photo 

Hunt. 

Over the past decade, the photo 

hunt has collected hundreds of

Cooking with what is in season 

Lemons and fennel are in 

season and they make a 

perfect partnership. This 

subtle combination works 

beautifully on its own 

as a light dinner or will 

accompany seafood, pork 

and lamb 

Lemon and fennel risotto 

Ingredients 

1500ml vegetable stock, hot 

2 lemons 

2 Tbsp olive oil 

1 Tbsp butter 

2 shallots 

1 tsp fennel seeds, crushed 

3 bulbs fennel, sliced thinly and 

tops reserved 

400g risotto rice, such as arborio 

or carnaroli 

200ml dry white wine 

100g parmesan cheese, finely 

grated 

1 cup fennel fronds 

½ purple olives, stones removed 

50ml olive oil 

sea salt and cracked pepper 

Directions 

Bring the stock to the boil. In a 

medium-sized saucepan, heat the 

oil and butter, add fennel seeds 

and shallots and cook gently 

for 3min. Add the sliced fennel 

bulbs and cover with a lid and 

cook for about 15min until the 

fennel has softened and become 

sweet and fragrant. 

Add the zest of one lemon and 

juice from half. 

Add the rice and stir well so 

the rice gets coated. Cook until 

the rice becomes lightly toasted. 

Add wine and stir well until it 

has been absorbed into the rice. 

Ladle the hot stock in one ladle 

at a time. Stir well between each 

addition so the rice sucks up the 

stock and becomes creamy. 

Continue until the rice is 

tender and creamy and the sauce 

around the rice is thick and silky. 

If too thick, loosen with a little 

more stock, or if too runny cook 

out for a little longer. You may or 

may not need all the stock. 

Adjust the seasoning and 

finish by adding half the grated 

parmesan and stir to combine. 

To make the fennel and olive 

dressing, chop the fennel fronds 

and add to the olives and zest of 

one lemon. 

Stir together, add the olive 

oil and enough lemon juice to 

balance the dressing. 

To serve the risotto, spoon 

on to your plate, sprinkle over 

a little more grated parmesan. 

Spoon over a little fennel and 

olive dressing. 

Save your ripe bananas 

to make this sweet after 

dinner treat 

Banana loaf 

Ingredients 

140g butter, softened, plus extra 

for the tin 

140g caster sugar 

2 large eggs, beaten 

140g self-raising flour 

1 tsp baking powder 

2 ripe bananas, mashed 

50g icing sugar 

Handful dried banana chips, for 

decoration 

Directions 

Heat oven to 180 deg C. 

Butter a 900g loaf tin and line 

the base and sides with baking 

parchment. 

Cream 140g softened butter 

and 140g caster sugar until light 

and fluffy, then slowly add two 

beaten large eggs with a little of 

the 140g flour. 

Fold in the remaining flour, 

one tsp baking powder and two 

mashed bananas. 

Pour into the tin and bake 

for about 30min until a skewer 

comes out clean. 

Cool in the tin for 

10min, then remove to a wire 

rack. 

Mix 50g icing sugar with twothree 

tsp water to make a runny 

icing. 

Drizzle the icing across the top 

of the cake and decorate with a 

handful of banana chips.

Tips to improve your outdoor living area

almost there, the warmer weather 

is a sure indication Christmas 

is not far away. 

Wise are those who plan and 

work in advance. Unfortunately, 

most of us wait until the last 

minute to work on our gardens, 

just before the big day arrives. 

Often we find the task either 

too big or too difficult, hence 

a lot of us leave it incomplete 

or even worse, don’t start at all. 

Well, here are some simple tips 

to improve your outdoor living 

areas. 

You can always let the cobwebs 

inside take care of themselves, at 

least they catch flies. 

One: If your garden is too 

much to handle then simplify it. 

Look at what plants you have. 

Your likes and dislikes. Too big 

or too small? Leaf droppers or 

sun blockers? The list goes on. 

Ascertain what has to go and 

get rid of them. You may be 

surprised at how simple things 

make a big difference. 

Two: Remember, often less is 

best. At this stage you may need 

to seek some professional advice 

to help keep in mind the picture 

you want to create. 

Three: If your garden and 

plant maintenance is high and

added benefits of a well drained 

garden that is easier to maintain. 

You may even consider split 

level gardens which will add an 

aesthetic value to your piece of 

paradise. 

Five: Consider plants that 

either give off scent or produce 

food. This is an increasingly 

popular trend, with the benefits 

of producing organic fruit and 

vegetables being both healthy for 

the body, good for the soul and 

satisfying for the pocket. 

Six: Make your garden as 

maintenance-free as possible. 

Consider alternatives to bark and 

mulch using non-organic product 

such as decorative stone and 

using a quality non-woven weed 

matt for weed control. 

Seven: Consider painting or 

staining timber fences, retaining 

walls and other wooden structures. 

This will give a fresh look 

and can be colour co-ordinated 

to enhance your overall look and 

design. 

Eight: If the task is too much 

or you need some advice call 

your professional landscaper for 

help. There may be things you 

haven’t considered.
