AN EXPENSIVE
SIX BRITISH men have been
stranded in Alicante Province
for almost two months, after
getting involved in an assault
in Elche at the end of August.
The group have had to surrender
their passports and one
of their relatives has said that
they are virtually broke and
can’t afford any accommodation.
The friends from the
Northampton area flew in on
August 28th for a mini-break
and were scheduled to fly back
home from Alicante-Elche
airport on September 1st.
But they got involved in
a 3.00am fight with a group
of Spaniards after watching
a football match in an Elche
NIGHT OUT
by Alex Trelinski
city centre bar, and they were
arrested in the early hours of
August 30th.
They were later charged
with causing Actual Bodily
Harm (ABH), after a 36-yearold
man was seriously assaulted,
along with lesser injuries to
a man and woman, who were
all walking home.
They also faced charges of
resisting police arrest after running
off in different directions
when the National Police arrived
in the Paseo de la Estacion
area of Elche.
The group subsequently admitted
that they were involved
in an altercation but they claim
they were not the initial aggressors,
whilst those who
were assaulted told authorities
that they had never seen the
tourists before.
The British men, aged between
22 and 26, have had to
remain in the Elche area where
they are on police bail and have
to report to court every month as
part of their bail conditions, with
their passports being removed.
Some of the men, who have
already been in Spain for seven
weeks, have lost their jobs and
face losing their homes in the
UK.
A relative of one of the men
told Northampton’s Chronicle &
Echo newspaper:- “Shortly our
boys will be sleeping rough on
the streets as they cannot pay
the £360 per week for a shared
flat, or afford food. One mother
has two of her sons stuck out in
Spain and is heartbroken.”
“Two of the boys have had to
give up their homes in the UK
as they cannot pay the rent and
another has already lost his job.”
The Cruz Roja is helping
them with food but cannot
provide them with temporary
accommodation.
Bad weather returns
HEAVY RAIN returned to Alicante
Province at the start of
the week, with the Marina Alta
area taking the brunt.
Figures of up to 108 litres of
rain per square metre were recorded
in the Marina Alta on
Monday, with the first heavy rain
recorded south in the Vega Baja
region, since last month´s storms.
No significant problems were
reported, as temperatures fell to
daytime maximums of around 13
degrees in Alicante, and as low as
10 degrees in some inland areas. by Alex Trelinski
support from local residents,
the popular Benibus
that links Benissa
town and the coastal area
of the town will not be
running during the early
part of the winter.
The free service ran all
summer and was popular
with locals and tourists
alike, creating a vital link
between the two areas and
easing traffic.
However, for financial
reasons the Partido Popular
by Simon Russell
have said that, for the time
being at least, the service
will be ceasing.
There are still hopes that
the service will resume at
the start of 2020 rather than
wait until Easter as in previous
years.
A number of foreign residents
attended the meeting
about the issue, but as there
was no translation service
offered many of them left
early.

Getting the voters out
ALICANTE City is running a
special service to transport
the infirm and those with
reduced mobility to the
polls during the upcoming
election on 10 November.
This is being done through
a collaboration with the Red
Cross and Civil Protection
Volunteers and will also help
elderly people who have no
relatives or close friends who
will take them to the polls.
Ten volunteers will be running
three specially adapted
vehicles which will pick
people up direct from their
homes.
PHONE and internet operator
Vodafone has denied
that there have been negotiations
over selling its
operations in Spain to its
smaller rival MasMovil.
Reports had suggested
over the summer that Vodafone
rejected an offer from
MasMovil as not being high
enough by at least two billion
euros.
A Vodafone spokesman
by Alex Trelinski
said there was "no truth
whatsoever" to reports that
talks had taken place or that
the company was asking a
specific purchase figure.
City centre biker death
THE body of a dead motorcycle
rider had to be left
on a city centre pavement
in Alicante pending the arrival
of a coroner and judicial
authorities on Friday
night.
The 49-year-old man had
hit a tree at about three in
the morning on Avenida Jaime
II and an ambulance was
called by witnesses.
by Simon Russell
The emergency medical
staff soon arrived at the
scene but could only confirm
the death of the victim.
It appears that the man
had lost control before hitting
the tree, and toxicology
tests will be carried out. A
helmet lay on the ground
next to the body.
this year, with about 50 people
using the service.
Pseudo-science still
DESPITE the General
Council of Medical Associations
saying that they
have no place in modern
medicine, what are often
referred to as “pseudosciences”
are still being
taught in the Valencian
medical association.
These include homeopathy,
acupuncture, naturopathic
medicines and even
yoga.
The Spanish Collegiate
Medical Organisation said
that homeopathy “has not
been able to demonstrate to
date any scientific evidence
by Simon Russell
of medical efficacy outside
the placebo effect” and generally
these treatments are
“without foundation, with
high risks and costs, as well
as generating confusion for
many patients to be described
by some as 'alternative’
medicine”.
However contrary to the
WTO ruling the Valencian
Association continues to
have a section dedicated to
alternative medicines, as
they refer to them.
players’ houses whilst
they played, has been
Authorities detained four
people, all Albanian citizens,
and seized jewels and 10,000
euros in cash that were
believed to belong to the
players and their families.
Officials also recovered a
Champions League runners
from the house of Atlético
by Alex Trelinski
Madrid midfielder Thomas
The player’s passport also
Saving the seaweed
SEAWEED and algae is not
generally a welcome sight
for beachgoers, but ecologists
have long been saying
that it helps preserve
the sands.
Based on this advice Teulada-Moraira
council have
decided that from mid-October
until April 8, a longer
period than previous years,
they will no longer be clearing
the weeds and algae from
the Portet, l’Ampolla and les
Platgetes beaches.
by Simon Russell
The weed lessens the impact
that wave erosion has
while the task of clearing it
also loses sand.
There are fears that climate
change and the increased frequency
of storms will lead to
advanced coastal erosion and
measures like this, which
are cost efficient and easy to
implement, will be used more
frequently in regions such as
the Costa Blanca.
Ten year old project
back on the agenda
DENIA council is reviving
plans to fully renovate
Casa Torrecremada, one
of the town’s great old
buildings which has been
allowed to fall into a state
of neglect.
The project was originally
approved in 2006
and was in the Community
budget but, for various reasons,
the work was never
started and it failed to reappear
in the next year’s
budget plans.
Early blueprints for the
renovation work are now
being put out to tender
with a maximum cost of
€45,000 as the old plans
need updating.
The aim is to get this
agreed by mid-November
by Simon Russell
so that it will be eligible
for a central government
grant.
The final overall cost is expected
to be well into seven
figures, most of it from a regional
grant for works of this
type.
Green castle plans
ALICANTE City Council
is set to submit plans to
make the iconic Santa
Barbara Castle Spain’s
first sustainable castle.
They have said that this
arose due to the lack of
green areas in the neighbourhood
and room for
improvement with issues
such as recycling water
by Simon Russell
and cleaner energy.
Proposals will include
reforestation using native
trees, a “smart” walking
space, fully recycled water
and the use of solar panels.
There are also plans
for a special fitness area
including machines such
as exercise bikes that can
generate energy which
is measured on a control
panel.
Less low tech additions
include rest areas, extra
shaded spots, benches
and increased citizen
participation.
The final plans are set to
be announced in December.
to step up their campaign
for a Costa Blanca train
has been put on the
The Costa Train, if it ever
comes to pass, will link Alicante
and Valencia with proposed
stops at Gandia, Oliva
are also keen to see the train
than 100kg of methamphetamine
by chance in
a Madrid shopping centre
car park.
While investigating a
separate incident at the car
park on Wednesday, National
Police officers observed a
man acting oddly around a
parked car.
Police said the person
checked their mobile phone
by Alex Trelinski
several times and picked up a
vehicle key that had been left
on a front wheel of the car.
As the man tried to leave
the car, the officers stopped
him and searched the vehicle.
They found seven bags of
building materials with 66
bags of methamphetamine
hidden inside, and promptly
arrested the man.

Holiday Brit dies in India
A 69-YEAR-OLD British
woman from the Los Montesinos
area was found
dead in an apartment in the
South Calcutta area of India
last Saturday afternoon.
Helen West was staying at
the building at Jodhpur Park
with five other people from
the Vega Baja area, who had
started a two month tour of
India towards the start of
October.
Preliminary investigations
suggested that she died
of a heart attack.
RELATIVES of a British
father and son who went
missing on the Costa del
Sol nearly seven months
ago say they are not hopeful
that they are still alive.
Liam Poole and his son
Daniel travelled to Malaga
on March 31st but have not
spoken to relatives since the
following day.
Their hire car had not
been returned and their
luggage and passports were
found in their hotel room.
Sussex Police said the pair,
from Burgess Hill in West
Sussex, had travelled to play
golf and look at holiday homes.
by Alex Trelinski
Helen lived on the Florantiles
Camping and Caravan
site off the CV-942 Los Montesinos
road, close to the CV-
95 junction on the Torrevieja
to San Miguel de Salinas
route.
The tour group, organised
by Peter Sayles, flew into
India on October 6th from
Spain, and had been at their
Calcutta accommodation almost
a fortnight, ahead of a
scheduled flight to Mumbai
Unhopeful signs
by Alex Trelinski
But Daniel's grandmother
told the BBC: "Daniel didn't
play golf but he and his father
would keep coming back
there."
Kathy Catney said she suspected
the pair were "up to no
good" and had visited Spain
several times in a year. I do
think Liam's died, I think he's
been killed," she said.
Ms Catney said: "I knew
he [Liam] had done time for
drugs because he was with
my daughter that time, we
always suspected he was up
to no good but again we just
Helen West
didn't ask questions.
"I knew he was going to
Spain to meet up with somebody
to do some sort of deal.
Whether that was property [or]
drugs I really didn't know."
Ms Catney said Spanish
police had told the family
"two or three weeks ago" the
just hours after Helens´body
was discovered.
She had been sick and was
spotted lying unconscious on
a couch at around 10.00am
on Saturday in the sitting
room by one of her co-travellers,
Mary Hanratty, who
then called the authorities.
Medics arrived at the scene,
but Helen was pronounced as
dead on arrival at hospital.
The rest of the group subsequently
flew to Mumbai,
with local officials saying
that Helen´s body would be
hire car had been found in a
street near Estepona.
She said the family received
a phone demand for
£100,000 the day after the
pair disappeared and they
managed to raise the money
"in three hours", but nothing
further materialised.
released to her relatives,
after a formal post-mortem
had been completed.
No further details about
Helen´s family were released
by Indian authorities.
FRIDAY 25TH OCTOBER 2019 11
Kirsty’s parents
set for appeal
The parents of Scottish
newlywed Kirsty Maxwell,
who fell to her death from
the tenth floor of a Benidorm
apartment two and a
half years ago, are set to
appeal against a judge’s
decision to close the case.
They want Judge Ana Isabel
Garcia-Galbis to review
her ruling, made last month,
arguing that five British men,
formerly interviewed as suspects,
could be have been involved
in a case of homicide.
Brian and Denise Curry,
have instructed their legal
team to contest the decision,
claiming that the judge
placed too much emphasis on
the amount of alcohol their
daughter had consumed,
which tests concluded, would
have caused, 'blurred vision,
loss of balance and emotional
instability', in the hours
leading up to her death.
The five British men, under
investigation, who were present
in the room at the Payma
Apartment block, from which
Kirsty fell in April 2017 - Joseph
Graham, Ricky Gammon,
Anthony Holehouse,
Callum Northridge and Daniel
Bailey – were cleared of involvement,
by judge Garcia-
Galbis last month.
The family are unhappy
Kirsty fell from the tenth floor of the Payma Apartments
by Andy Mansell
that formal DNA tests were
never conducted on the suspects
and are convinced that
Kirsty died in ‘sinister and
suspicious’ circumstances.
However, lawyer Roberto
Sanchez, who represented
the British men, countered
with his own submission urging
the judge to reject the appeal,
highlighting the police
report concluding Kirsty's
death was most likely a terrible
accident and denying
claims of contradictions in
his clients' version of events.
Judge Garcia-Galbis insisted
in her ruling last
month that, 'There is no evidence
of the participation of
the men investigated in the
death of the victim,’ and is
expected to reject the Maxwell’s
family’s request for
appeal.
If that occasion arises,
Kirsty's family are expected
to take their battle to a higher
court where three judges
will be asked to review the
case.
The appeals process could
take until next summer to
resolve if judges from the
Provincial Court in Alicante
end up intervening.
Russian’s DIA quiz
SPAIN’S High Court will
investigate whether Russian
tycoon Mikhail Fridman
deliberately tried to
keep the share price down
of struggling supermarket
chain DIA, as he tried to
buy it.
Fridman’s LetterOne
fund snatched DIA from the
brink of insolvency earlier
this year after the retailer
continued to lose customers,
with the group losing
90 per cent of its market
last year.
The Supreme Court has
given the High Court a mandate
to investigate anonymous
accusations which it
said indicate that Fridman
may have manipulate share
by Alex Trelinski
prices; engaged in insider
trading; and damaged the
interests of minority shareholders.

TENNIS STAR Rafa Nadal
married his longtime girlfriend,
31-year-old Mery
"Xisca" Perello, in a lavish
ceremony on Saturday.
The wedding took place
at La Fortaleza, a privately
owned fortress on the
couple´s home island of Mallorca,
and was attended by
some 350 guests, including
the former king of Spain,
Juan Carlos I.
Nadal, 33, has been with
Perello for 14 years, and
by Alex Trelinski
they are childhood sweethearts,
having got engaged
in Rome in May.
The two managed to keep
the wedding fairly under
wraps, and Perello generally
shuns the spotlight.
Rafa and his bride left
notes on guests' seats reminding
them that this
was a private ceremony
and asking them not to
take photos.
They were asked to put
their cell phones in lockers,
though the Spanish tennis
legend and his new wife did
take to social media to post
a photo of their special day.
SPAIN’S Prime Minister
Pedro Sanchez accused
Catalunya’s pro-seccession
president of failing in
his duty to ensure public
order and peace between
pro and anti-indepedence
supporters as he visited
Barcelona on Monday following
a series of riots.
Sanchez said that Catalan
president Quim Torra
had “turned his back” on
the security forces and he
reiterated that Torra should
forcefully condemn the
unrest.
The riots followed the jailing
last week of nine Catalan
separatists found guilty
Glum PM in
Barcelona
of sedition over their role in
leading an illegal 2017 independence
A small crowd of protesters
greeted Sanchez as he
arrived, blowing horns and
yelling as he walked into
the National Police headquarters,
which has been
the focal point of much of
the recent violence.
on Sunday as shepherds
steered their flocks
The annual event, which
started in 1994, sees shepherds
exercise their right
to use traditional routes to
migrate their livestock from
by Alex Trelinski
northern Spain to more
southerly winter grazing
pastures.
The route would have taken
them through undeveloped
countryside a few centuries
ago, but today it cuts
through Madrid's bustling
city centre and along some of
its most famous streets.
Sheep farmers pay a
SPAIN has launched a
new national cyber-safety
helpline number which
anybody can call if they are
worried about their online
security being threatened.
The number, 017, can
be used to report internet
fraud, phishing, hack attacks
or dodgy websites of
any description.
The Business and Economy
ministry says that the
MOTORISTS in Spain will
not need to carry their
driving licence with them
in the future, so long
as they have a mobile
phone.
Spain´s DGT traffic authority
says a new mobile
App will leave drivers with
the option to show their licence
on their phone screen
to the police, as opposed to
grabbing for the original
plastic card.
The App will be called
MiDGT, and the new gizmo
will also allow the motorist
to display their vehicle registration
documents, which
currently by law, also have
to be in the car.
The App will also give
drivers to pay any fines online,
but as MiDGT is still
being developed, no release
date has been made public.

TAX GUIDE FOR NON-RESIDENTS
Paying tax is something we
all hate, but it is a legal requirement,
irrespective of
whether you live in Spain,
the UK, or elsewhere.
We at Sun Lawyers can advise
on what tax that you have
to pay as a property owner
in Spain, and under what
category you come under.
We cannot stress strongly
enough that even if you are a
non-resident property owner,
then you may well be liable
for tax payments, when
depending on purchase date
and whether you let out your
home or not.
It will be worth it to check
with us here at Sun Lawyers
to make sure that you do not
fall foul of the Spanish tax
authorities.
Putting it off or claiming
ignorance is not a legal
excuse, but as we are legal
and tax experts that you can
trust, we can sort everything
out for you.
This is the simple Sun
Lawyers guide on where you
stand as a non-resident:-
What group are you
in?
If you’ve bought a property
in Spain, then you will be
in one of the following three
groups:
1. Investor, to rent out
(not having Spanish
residency card)
2. Holiday home owner
(not having Spanish
residency card)
3. Permanent home owner
(having Spanish
residency card)
Are you a Spanish
fiscal resident?
You are a Spanish fiscal
resident if:
You live more than 183
days per calendar year in
Spain. Otherwise, you are a
fiscal non-resident.
However, both resident
and non-resident (unless
rented all year round) property
owners in Spain are
obliged to file annual income
tax returns, as the Spanish
tax system operates through
self-assessment.
Sun Lawyers will clarify
what exactly your position is,
and what you will have to do.
What is the Spanish
tax year?
The fiscal tax year in Spain
has more logic than that
in the UK, as it begins on
January 1st and ends on
December 31st.
Spanish fiscal non-resident
annual tax returns
are declared in arrears
and can be paid the following
year until the end of
December.
How much tax will
you have to pay?
Sun Lawyers have identified
two main categories for nonresidents.
1. Non-residents of Spain
from non-EU member
states or non-EEA countries
are required to declare
income earned in
Spain at a general rate
of 24 per cent.
2. Resident of an EU
member state or EEA
country which shares
your tax details with
Spain, means that you
will be charged a Spanish
income tax rate of
19 per cent.
In either category, the
general rule if you are a fiscal
non-resident is that your
tax is based on your income
earned in Spain.
To use the right terminology,
that’s your gross Spanish
source of notional income
(benefit of having an asset);
your total NET rental income
from a property that
you might let out; and on
any capital gain earned from
assets in Spain.
You are a nonresident
and
property owner,
what taxes should
you pay?
Sun Lawyers emphasise
that there is a key factor to
bear in mind, namely that if
a property is owned by more
that one person, each person
will be an independent
tax payer who will have to
declare separate tax returns.
We will keep you right and
ensure that you declare the
appropriate tax on time.
The final income tax
amount will depend on the
use of the property:
A) Notional income tax on
properties in private use
Let’s say you were not the
owner of the property during
the whole year. In this
case, you would only pay
notional income tax that
would apply to the period
where you were the actual
owner (proportion you
owned the property). This
same formula would apply if
you rent out property.
Notional income tax is
calculated according to the
calendar year and between
January 1st and December
31st.
B) Income tax on property
which is rented out
The rule here is simple,
where you have to declare
what you have earned in total
as a non-resident property
owner from letting out
your home, where you have
to declare the total amount
received, deducting the
costs involved with carrying
out the rental period and
you would be taxed over the
resulting NET income.
But unlike notional income,
this kind of tax is declared
quarterly as follows:
• 1st-20th April (1st quarter)
• 1st-20th July (2nd quarter)
• 1st-20th Oct (3rd quarter)
• 1st-20th Jan (4th quarter)
Don’t forget something
that we have covered before
which is the fact that you
may also need a tourist licence
to rent out your home
(depending on period of rentals),
and Sun Lawyers can
sort that out for you too.
Have you got any questions
If so, then please do let us
Expo torrevieja
by Alex Trelinski
LIFESTYLE enablers and
providers plus local clubs
and associations will once
again feature at this weekend’s
autumn staging of
Expo Torrevieja.
The twice-yearly lifestyle
event takes place at Torrevieja’s
International Auditorium
this Saturday and
Sunday.
Admission is free on both
days, with doors open between
10.00am and 3.00pm,
and there’s plenty of free
parking in the area as well.
Flood help pledge
A TOP European Union figure
has promised prompt
emergency funding to
help rebuild those parts of
the Vega Baja region that
were devastated by last
month´s flooding.
Speaking in Orihuela
City, Frans Timmermans,
also pledged to provide EU
help to the Madrid and Valencian
governments to improve
water management in
the area.
“The Vega Baja region
presents many challenges in
regard to what is happening
with climate change”, said
Timmermans.
“These kind of Gota Frias
by Alex Trelinski
do not happen every 50
years, but could now happen
annually due to climate
change. We need to fully
protect residents and take
immediate action”.
“It also doesn´t make
sense that you have so much
rain, but due to management
issues, you end up with
droughts”, the ex-Dutch
foreign minister added.
Valencia President Ximo
Puig said that working in
tandem with the EU was
crucial to help revive the
area, and that would “they
work together to make it so”.
Tapas variety
THE ANNUAL Orihuela
Tapas and Gin & Tonic
route will take place from
next Thursday October
31st through to Sunday
November 3rd.
The municipality says
that they hope the increasingly
popular event in Orihuela
City will be further
boosted by the fact that November
1st is a bank holiday,
with a 25 per cent rise in
the number of places taking
part.
There will be four different
by Alex Trelinski
categories besides one for gin
and tonic, with traditional,
gourmet, and desserts on the
list.
Tapas will be sold on
each day between noon and
3.00pm, and then 8.00pm
through to 11.00pm, with
the price for a drink and
snack at 2.50 euros.
Winter feed secured
AN INTERNATIONAL effort
has helped the Rojalesbased
Easy Horse Care
Rescue Centre to provide
vital nourishment for their
animals over the winter.
Last month’s bad weather
led to the centre losing
around three thousand euros
in forage for their horses,
ponies, and donkeys,
and replacing it has not
been easy.
Centre co-founder Sue
by Alex Trelinski
Weeding said: “78 per cent
of alfalfa in Spain is exported
to the Middle East
and China and we cannot
compete with the price the
producers are getting from
these countries.”
An appeal for help led
to financial donations, but
also people like Rune from
Norway tried to find actual
supplies of forage by going
Austria and Germany where
farmers donated hay which
was taken to a central collection
point in Germany,
ahead of a pick up and long
drive to Rojales!
Two more loads for next
month and for December
have been secured by Rune,
with each load last around
16 to 17 days in terms of the
animals getting through it.
The cost of transporting
the hay over to Spain has
been quoted at €3,300, but
the Deutschen Golfclub
Costa Blanca stepped in,
and with other donations,
they collected enough money
for the first load of hay to
be delivered this week.
Sue added:- “We are so
grateful to all our everybody
at this difficult time. This
is going to be a long winter
until the crops are ready for
harvest again, which won't
be until well into next year.”

Court approves
Mercadona
“spy cameras”
Sponsored By
Tel: 671 935 072
by Simon Russell
THE European Court of
Human Rights (ECHR) has
said that hidden cameras
used by Valencian supermarket
giant Mercadona
to monitor staff are legal.
The case came about after
the retailer fired five
employees who it recorded
stealing products at a store
in Barcelona.
In 2018 a Spanish court
ruled in favour of the workers
on the grounds of breaches
of privacy.
However, the ECHR ruling
effectively reversed this
in a decision which cannot
be appealed.
Compensation of €4,500
that was due to be paid by
Mercadona to the sacked
staff will not now stand. The
court found that the location
of the cameras was key in
the matter of privacy.
It said there should never
be CCTV in areas such as a
bathroom and in closed door
areas such as an office their
use should be limited.
However, in an open area
such as the shop floor which
is easily accessible by the
public and staff, CCTV is
justified and not a breach of
privacy.
Home&Garden
Sponsored By
Making
your garden
grow on you
SPRUCING up your garden
doesn’t have to cost a
fortune. An outdoor makeover
can make a big difference
to your home without
costing the earth.
Painting outdoor buildings
a different colour or
decorating old plant pots are
just some of the ways to give
your garden a new look without
spending a fortune.
Other tips include fertilising
your lawn with natural
remedies and taking
out weeds using a salt and
vinegar solution.
Turning shrubs into attractive
topiary sculptures
and planting perennial flowers
that return every year
are also good long-term options
that will liven up your
garden.
Simply cleaning garden furniture
and updating it with
new cushion cases and throws
can also make a big difference
to an outdoor space.
Using pebbles from the
beach to create a water feature
or hanging mirrors to
make it feel larger are a few
simple ways to create a better
space.
And installing solar powered
lights will save you
money not just on the makeover
but on your bills as well.
Here are the top 15 hacks
for an affordable garden
makeover:
Paint old plant pots
Give plant pots a new lease
of life by painting them with
interesting designs and complimentary
colours. It will
save you buying new ones and
will make your garden more
personalised to you.
Fertilise your lawn
Fertilising your lawn can be
a quick and easy way to give
your garden a new surge of
life. If shop-bought fertiliser
is too expensive then try making
your own using wood ash.
Clean your patio
Scrub away grime that has
built up on your patio and
you’ll notice the difference in
colour straight away.
Don’t forget to get in between
bricks and dig up
any weeds whilst you’re at
it.
Eliminate weeds
If weeds are ignored they
can make your garden look
neglected and unloved. It’s
worth spending the time cutting
them out from the root.
You can also try homemade
weed killers such as a salt
and vinegar solution.
Solar powered lights
Instead of outdoor lighting,
try solar powered lights instead.
They will spend the
entire day storing up energy
from the sun so when you
want to use them at night it
won’t cost you a penny.
Paint your
outbuildings
Garden outbuildings can be
a real focal point, so making
sure they look great will
give your garden a new lease
of life. Sand down and paint
the exterior to create the
look of something new.
Spruce up garden
furniture with
cushions
If your garden furniture is
looking bleak then spruce it
up with some new cushions
and blankets. Take the stuffing
from old ones and simply
sew new fabric around to
create some brand new seat
cushions.
Plant perennials
If you’re buying seeds or
plants make sure to buy perennials
so your investment
will last far longer. Popular
perennials include lavender
and Echinacea.
Create an allotment
plot
Why not spruce up your garden
by creating a small allotment
plot? Simply corner
off a section, prepare the soil
and begin planting. It will
look great and you’ll have
your own supply of tasty veg.
Edge uneven lawns
Spend some time focusing on
the very edges of your lawn
as they’re often missed by
the lawnmower. Grab some
garden scissors and trim
edges to look neat and tidy.
Mirrors
Hanging mirrors up in your
garden may sound strange
but it’s a quick and easy way
to make the space feel larger.
Use any unwanted ones or
grab some cheap ones from
a charity shop and hang on
walls or fences.
Bird feeders
Don’t throw away tin cans
from soup and baked beans.
Wash them out thoroughly
before painting and then
hang up in the garden. Fill
with birdseed and you’ll
have your very own bird
feeder.
20 FRIDAY 25TH OCTOBER 2019
Milan,
Italy
The second largest city
in Italy, Milan is located
in the North of the country
and is world renowned
as one of the world’s four
fashion capitals.
The city attracts around
8 million visitors annually,
and are catered to from a
wealth of luxury hotels in
the city – the fifth most Michelin
starred in the world.
Thankfully, there are other
options of accommodation
available too, for those who
are not millionaires!
Amongst the cities top attractions
are the Santa Maria
della Grazie, the Church
and Convent built in 1469.
The chapel was the original
home of the Titian artwork
of Christ receiving the crown
of thorns, however this was
looted by French troops in
1797 and now hangs in the
Louvre in Paris.
Art lovers will not be disappointed
however, as the
chapel’s Refectory is the
home of the famous work of
art by Leonardo da Vinci –
The Last Supper. This work
is an al fresco painted onto
the end wall of the now refectory.
Not a true A Fresco,
this work was nevertheless
painted onto a dry wall and
almost immediately after
completion, began to disintegrate.
The work has been
restored various times over
the years.
If you plan to visit, ensure
you buy tickets in advance –
visitors are only allowed in,
in controlled groups of 30
persons and for a 15 minute
slot due to the degradation
that modern conditions can
cause the painting. Tickets
the world, along with Paris,
New York and London. With
a history in fashion that can
be traced back to the Middle
Ages, the city was known for
its luxury cloths and materials,
which continued and
developed over the years
and was cemented thought
the 70s and 80s as young
designers launched their
new ranges in this city. This
makes it a mecca now for the
shopping aficionado, with
designers such as Dolce &
Gabbana, Armani, Versace
and Prada amongst some of
the most well known.
Amongst the most imporby
Worldwide Horizons
sell out months in advance
so plan in advance.
Other reasons to visit the
city – well for football fans
there is the city’s two famous
teams of AC Milan and Inter
Milan. Whilst getting tickets
for a match may be a little
more difficult, visits to the
legendary stadiums of San
Siro stadium and Casa Milan
can be arranged in advance,
and offers a fascinating
tour of the history of both
clubs through the years.
Both stadiums feature on
the routes of the frequent
Hop On/Off buses that tour
the city, taking in all of the
best places to visit.
Tickets for these are available
online and offer other
excursions such as day tours
to Florence and Turin, so if
your timetable allows for it,
take advantage of these reasonable
priced guided tours
in English.
Milan is also one of the
four top Fashion Cities of
tant shopping streets, visit
the Piazza del Duomo, and
the Quadrilatero della Moda
Amazing Atlanta
Atlanta Streetcar and Skyview Atlanta
FROM award-winning tattooed
chefs to hipster
artists with beards, Atlanta
is a dynamic city
with a thriving creative
class. While Atlanta is
highlighted by its main attractions,
the city’s charm
lies within its neighbourhoods
– each with its own
personality and character
and all within a two-mile
radius of Downtown. With
films shooting across the
city, new dining concepts
popping up daily and
new developments in the
works, it’s no wonder why
Atlanta is the Capital of
the South.
Atlanta began as a rail-
road terminus. It’s
still a transportation
hub, but with
a 21st-century,
global approach.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta
International Airport is the
busiest airport in the world
with direct, nonstop service
to more than 150 U.S. destinations
and more than 75
international destinations in
50 countries.
Upon landing in Atlanta,
it doesn’t take long to get settled.
Hartsfield-Jackson is a
short taxi or train ride into
Downtown, Atlanta’s walkable
tourist hub, with more
than 10,000 hotel rooms
and nearly 300 restaurants
within a one-mile radius of
Centennial Olympic Park
– home of the 1996 Centennial
Olympic Games. Once
Downtown, visitors can
hop on the Atlanta Streetcar,
a modern-day trolley
that transports passengers
from Downtown to the Historic
Sweet Auburn District,
birthplace of American civil
rights leader Martin Luther
King Jr. Visitors to the
Martin Luther King Jr. National
Historic Site can see
Dr. King’s birth home, burial
site and the church where he
preached.
Centennial Olympic Park
is marked by playful fountains
that draw visitors to
its core. Attractions abound
at Pemberton Place with the
popular Georgia Aquarium,
World of Coca-Cola and
Center for Civil and Human
Rights. American football
fans can ”Rise Up” at the
Georgia Dome for the Atlanta
Falcons, who played in
London’s Wembley Stadium
in 2014.
Dining is one of the most
popular pastimes for visitors
to Atlanta. The city boasts
more than 700 Zagat-rated
restaurants from upscale
gourmet cuisine to progressive
variations of Southern
staples. Eateries opening in
Atlanta cater to the neighbourhood,
providing a warm
welcome and inviting ambiance
to invoke the feeling of
dining at a friend’s house,
rather than a restaurant.
Even the city’s most highend
restaurants dish out a
homely feel. Today, new epicurean
markets, like Krog
Street Market near the Sweet
Auburn District and Ponce
City Market near Atlanta’s
Midtown neighbourhood,
serve as a gathering place for
locals and visitors and as a
showcase for established local
chefs.
Midtown is also home to
the largest concentration of
arts facilities and organisations
in the city with more
than 30 permanent performing
arts groups and 22 entertainment
facilities. Atlanta’s
arts scene is not confined to
within the walls of the city’s
world-class venues. Recently,
a new wave of visual art
installations and street murals
have rolled in, splashing
parks, facades, tunnels
and walkways with colour
and energy. Musicians play
live at more than 40 outdoor
festivals and neighbourhood
farmers’ markets.
From art without borders
to live music and worldclass
dining, Atlanta is a
thriving city for young entrepreneurs.
Urban development
such as the Atlanta
BeltLine allows many of
Atlanta’s neighbourhoods to
be explored on foot or bike.
The BeltLine is considered
one of the nation’s largest
Martin Luther King
Center Mural
sustainable redevelopment
projects that when all phases
are complete, will provide
a network of public parks,
multi-use paths and transit
along a historic 22 mile railroad
corridor that connects
45 intown neighbourhoods.
The most popular trail, the
Eastside BeltLine Trail, is
a 2 mile segment that connects
several of Atlanta’s
neighbourhoods including
Virginia-Highland, Old
Fourth Ward, Inman Park
and more.
Atlanta is quickly becoming
the “Hollywood of the
South.” As one of the top five
production destinations in
the country, the city hosts
eminent television and film
actors year-round who appear
on shows like The
Walking Dead. Locals and
visitors alike can experience
the magic of Hollywood with
a visit to a number of film
sites on tours led by Atlanta
Movie Tours, including The
Swan House at the Atlanta
History Center, a prominent
filming location for The Hunger
Games trilogy, and the
Georgian Terrace, the site
of the 1939 Gone with the
Wind premiere gala.
Atlanta’s skyline is constantly
changing and with
$2.5 billion in new development
coming over the next
five years, there’s no end
in sight. Atlanta sits at the
intersection of Southern
charm, creativity and sophistication.
It is easy to fall
in love with this beautiful
city – its world-class attractions,
award-winning dining
and hidden wonders – and
be inspired by the city’s endless
possibilities.
Pets
Are you giving the right
treats to your pooch?
MILLIONS of dog owners
worry that they are giving
their canine friends the
wrong kind of treats, new
research has revealed.
A study of more than 2,000
pet owners revealed that the
average family dog gets 27
treats a week.
But despite pampering
their pooches, six in 10 owners
worried that they were
giving their pets something
that wasn’t good for them.
Dog owners are also a
sucker for puppy dog eyes
– with 16 per cent of those
quizzed admitting they have
given in and given a treat
when their pet begs.
Acting ‘cute’, performing
tricks and behaving well
for a picture are among
other reasons why dogs are
treated.
However, one in ten owners
admitted giving chocolate
or grapes to their pets,
which is dangerous for them.
Ice cream, cheese and bacon
were also among the unhealthy
‘human foods’ used
as treats. And it means three
quarters have had
to take their pet
to the vet because
they got sick from
eating something
they shouldn’t
have.
And a quarter
of them had been
advised by their
vet to change their
feeding habits for
the sake of their
dogs health.
The research
also revealed that
one fifth of owners
polled did not know
what their dog
should or shouldn’t
be eating.
The findings follow warnings
from welfare experts
that coach-potato lifestyles
and harmful junk food diets,
scraps and treats are threatening
the health of millions
of pets.
With research showing
almost half of dogs are
overweight or obese, huge
numbers of our four-legged
friends are suffering devas-
tating health problems as a
result.
Henrietta Morrison from
pet food maker Lily's Kitchen,
which commissioned the
study, said: “The act of treating
brings you closer together
with your dog and helps
you form a stronger bond
with them, whether you're
giving them a treat for training
or treating them just because.
And there is nothing
wrong with treating a pet often,
as long as you're doing it
with healthy and nutritious,
proper treats.”
She added: “There are so
many wonderful guilt-free
ways to treat your pets. Just
like looking after our own
health is important, we’re
responsible for our pet’s
health too.”
FRIDAY 25TH OCTOBER 2019 23
Totting up
the costs
If you decide to buy a property
in Spain, don´t be fooled by
believing that your mortgage
is the only large expense.
You need to make sure that
you budget appropriately, as
there are plenty of other expenses
that you need to look at
as you buy your home.
The bottom line figure is to
make sure that you put aside
around ten per cent of your
property price to make sure that
all the bills and taxes are dealt
with, which will be a significant
sum.
Expenses include:-
1. Getting a notary, who in
granting a public deed of sale
will charge somewhere between
600 and 875 euros, depending
on the value of the property.
2. Another expense is registering
the deeds signed by the
notary. The fees are fixed by
regulation and depend on the
price of the property, although
by Alex Trelinski
they are usually between 400
and 650 euros.
3. A buyer must also have
extra savings to pay taxes, although
the amount will depend
on the price of the house and
whether it is new or secondhand.
There is VAT to be paid at ten
per cent on a new property purchase
price, and there is also
the Documented Legal Aid taxi
to be dealt with.
For second-hand properties
purchases, the key tax is the
Property Transfer Tax. In this
case, the amount depends on
the percentage applied to the
deeded price and the autonomous
community in which the
house is located.
In the Valencia region, a ten
per cent rate is applied.
4. One optional cost of buying
a home is that of hiring a solicitor,
which you would use to process
the settlement of taxes and
other paperwork.
5. Using a real estate agency
is another optional cost, and
you should shop around to see
what commissions and deals
that they advertise.
6. If you are going to buy your
new or second-hand home by
means of a mortgage, then you
need to add some additional
expenses to those linked to the
purchase and sale. That includes
appraisals, opening commissions,
taxes, land registry
and notary fees.
There is certainly a lot to
be factored in when you buy a
house in Spain, but this brief
guide certainly suggests that,
especially when you are a firsttime
buyer, you should always
go for trusted professionals to
help lead you through the whole
process, and to make sure that
you have budgeted properly.
24 FRIDAY 25TH OCTOBER 2019
Getting a repo bargain
by Alex Trelinski
There are still thousands
of repossessed properties
in Spain available, despite
the fact that we are talking
years since the recession
and the bursting of
the property bubble.
The prospect of buying a
bank repossessed property is
an attractive option because
it is often a good deal with
low prices.
The Costa Blanca region
has many such properties
still for sale, with Andalucia
further south as the market
leader.
One of the main advantages
of buying a property in
Spain directly from the bank
is the low mortgage rate and
the chance to arrange finance
for possibly up to 100
per cent.
On the flip side, you need
to be cautious when buying
a bank owned property, as in
some cases, the homes have
been neglected for some
time, and may also have
debts attacked to them.
Owners whose properties
have been repossessed have
left their former home have
often left them in poor condition
in regard to fixtures
and fittings, including power
cables cut.
Banks and real estate
agents are not always
aware of the deficiencies
a property might have, so
make sure before placing
your bid that you have done
the necessary legal and
building checks.
That means bringing an
expert like a builder to a
property that you might
want to buy to carry out a
thorough inspection, and
also hire a solicitor to help
you out.
Repossessed homes can
be sold for the outstanding
debt, but in most cases
banks want to get the most
out of it and sell them at the
price that suits them best.
Some banks are more flexible
than other over prices
and getting bids, whilst
others tend to be firm over
keeping to a fixed price.
Also important when negotiating
with the bank is
the demand for a specific
property. If there are many
potential buyers interested
in the property you may not
have a strong negotiating
position.
A knowledge of Spanish
is also very useful to work
your way around the various
websites of the banks to see
what is for sale, and there
are also English websites offering
listings as well, but of
course they will charge if you
go through them.
Rental control stays with regions
EARLIER this month the
Spanish Supreme Court
ruled that the regional authorities
have the power
to regulate tourist rental
activity.
Many fear that this will
leave private landlords in
the hands of local political
by Simon Russell
lobbyists such as hotels who
would like to see a drop in
the competition that has
come about since the rise of
platforms such as Airbnb.
Potential powers now in
regional hands include limiting
frequency and duration of
tourist rentals, requesting external
signage identifying the
property as a rental and the
offering of a 24 hour helpline.
However, it seems it is down
to the local authority whether
they choose to implement
these measures or not.
Bad bank playing
at estate agent
READ US ONLINE:
ONE of the biggest exhibitors
at last week’s
Mediterranean Real Estate
Fair in Valencia was
Sareb commonly known
as the “Bad Bank”.
They had 385 properties
at the event, located in all
three Valencian Community
provinces.
These were generally
available at a discount of
15% on the normal market
price and ended up in the
hands of Sareb primarily
Chiswick is a fairly average
family home it has one thing
that Hillview Farm doesn’t
– easy access to central
London.
Chiswick also has good
by Simon Russell
as repossessions.
Prices range from
€45,000 to €220,000, the
latter being for a number
of luxury apartments on an
urbanisation in l’Eliana.
Sareb now also has a
full time office in Valencia
as it tries to offload assets
inherited as a result of the
bank restructuring work
they have been charged
with.
It’s all about the location
PICTURES of two very
contrasting properties
for sale in the UK that
have gone viral illustrate
perfectly the huge difference
that location, location,
location makes, to
paraphrase a certain TV
programme.
For £625,000 (about
€725,000) you can buy a
three bedroom terraced
house in the not particularly
glamorous London borough
of Chiswick.
However, for slightly less,
£600,000, you can buy the
17th century Hillview Farm
in County Down, Northern
Ireland.
This has a viable business,
two large farmhouses,
four acres of land, stunning
views and plenty of
privacy.
Although the house in
by Simon Russell
shops, schools and other
amenities.
The two properties illustrate
for many people more
than ever how much location
drives the price, even in
this age of remote and home
workers.

....AGAIN!
The mother of Britain’s
22nd child.
Sue Radford, 44, confirmed
on Sunday that
she is expecting again
in a YouTube clip with
husband Noel, 48.
Confirming the news
by holding up an ultrasound
image, Mrs Radford,
who has given
birth to 21 children,
told her followers: “So now you know guys, we’re
having a baby.”
She added that the baby is due in April and revealed
that she is hoping for a boy. “I wonder if it will be 11 of
each - I am feeling a bit boy,” she said.
The Radfords featured in the TV show 16 Kids and
Counting six years ago, and Noel works as a baker.
The massive credit to the family is that they are not
state spongers, and just get a few quid in child support.
Full marks to them as their 10 bedroom house seems
to me to be on the small side, despite the fact that two
of the kids are grown up and have left the nest.
ENGLAND’S WOW FACTOR
England has been named the world’s
second-best tourist destination for
2020 due to its ‘timeless treasures’.
Travel guide publisher Lonely Planet
ranked the country behind only Bhutan
in the Himalayas.
The list was based on ‘topicality,
unique experiences and wow factor’.
The entry for England states: ‘Brexit
uncertainties have dominated the headlines
in recent years but one constant
amid all the confusion has been the timeless
treasures that England is famous
for: the historic castles and cathedrals,
the quaint villages and rolling country-
‘Taking a bracing walk on a windswept
pier, eating delicious fish and chips,
searching for marine life in rock pools,
finding fossils in ancient cliffs, building
sandcastles and dolphin-spotting on picturesque
beaches are just some of the
activities offered by the English seaside.’
OK, so no need to live in Spain then!
The top five incidentally was completed
by North Macedonia in south-east Europe,
the Caribbean island of Aruba and
Lisa Graves, 31, has seen experts
of a stroke that was noticed during
pregnancy with her first child.
The nail technician from Lincoln
says that she’s got used to them, but
sometimes they can be so loud they
have been compared to a dog’s bark
after it’s been stood on and the noise
of a chicken.
Lisa’s husband and two daughters
take them in their stride, but
strangers often need pre-warning.
She wants to find a cure, but until
then she says she has just to get
used to them. Lisa said: ‘I’m lucky
– I own my salon and the majority
of the girls that I work with have
grown used to it.´
‘I initially tried every hiccup remedy
in the book – people making me
jump, sucking on a lemon, literally
everything.´
By the way, the longest known
case of hiccuping is 68 years.
Charles Osborne, from Iowa, started
hiccuping while trying to weigh
a hog before it was slaughtered in
1922, and they only stopped when
he died in 1990!
WHO WANTS
100 POUNDS?
Has anyone
ever called for
a 100 pound
lifeline?
Has anyone actually failed at the first ‘Just thinking it through, Jeremy,’ Ross
hurdle on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? explained. ‘It’s a difficult one. I’m not
I’m not sure, but it very nearly happened going to lie,’ he said. ‘I’m struggling with
recently, when a contestant struggled to this one. I’ve never heard the saying
answer the opening, 100-pound question before, that’s the reason why it’s difficult.’
and very nearly asked for a lifeline.
The presenter began to suggest that the
Ross Robertson was the contestant, who contestant use a lifeline, adding: ‘Has
found himself in the hotseat opposite anyone ever used a lifeline on a £100
Jeremy Clarkson.
question before?’
His first question read: ‘According to a Ross then decided to guess at ‘variety’,
A LOAD OF BALLS
...THE MUSICAL
I thought I was seeing things
this week, when I read about
a Footballers Wives musical
being in the pipeline.
Now, I do realise, several
movies and TV shows have
had the musical treatment
recently, including Big, Back
to the Future and Only Fools
and Horses, but Footballers
Wives …. You’re having a joke.
But, no, Maureen Chadwick,
one of Footballers’ Wives original creators, confirmed to Radio Times
Footballers wives
ended in 2006
magazine that a musical version of the show is being written for the stage.
The adaption will be based on the first series of the show, which followed
Tanya Turner and her fraught marriage to footballer, Jason Turner.
The hit TV series following the off-field antic of wives and girlfriends aired
from 2002 to 2006 and come to think, even though the format may appear
dated almost 16 years later, if you take into account the current Instagram
spat between Colleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy, it’s actually still going on.
Maybe it’s not such a bad idea after all.
AVIICI DAD OPENS UP
In a month when Mental health
issues have been at the forefront of
news topics, it was heartbreaking
to read about an interview given by
the father of chart topping Swedish
Dj, producer Aviici, who took his own
life, around this time last year.
Klas Bergling was asked whether
he had difficulty mentioning the
word ‘suicide’ in relation to his son’s
death, to which he replied,
“Yes. Absolutely. To pronounce it, it’s
also to admit that you’re part of this
I came across a new celebrity word
this week, that aptly describes
someone who you used to dislike,
but who then becomes a bosom
buddy and it’s called ……’Frenemy’
You know, like Taylor Swift and Katy
Perry, or in the context of the pair I
was reading about, Katie Price and
Kerry Katona, who are apparently
very close, just now.
To me, the word sounds like a cross
between a Spanish cold cure and
something you put up your bum
when you have constipation ……
which perfectly sums up the two
talentless nobodies it refers to.
destiny, so to say.”
Tim Bergling, under his pseudonym
Aviici, with his mega-hit Wake Me Up,
released in 2013, became a global
superstar.
The song went to #1 in 22 countries
and the famously driven star, played
over 250 gigs a year, before quitting
touring to get his life together.
“He was much healthier and he
started exercising,” Klas said. “And
things really turned into a very, very
good direction.”
BE MY BEST
FRENEMY
Pass me the
‘Frenema’
Two years later, he took his own life.
“The suicide came as a shock to all of
us. And we thought that he was really
on a better way before.”
Tim’s parents released the third
Avicii album, Tim, with music he was
working on just before his death.
The proceeds are going to the Tim
Bergling Foundation, the aim of
which, described by his Dad is to, “Try
Apparently the latest season of The
Great British Bake Off is drawing to
a conclusion over the next couple
of weeks.
I’ve not seen any of this series,
which is a pity, because I find all the
talk of sticky buns, floury baps and
soggy bottoms endlessly amusing.
Glorying in the show’s doubleentendres,
my schoolboy humour
got the best of me this week, when
I read that one of the contestants,
Rosie Brandreth-Poynter had a nut
allergy, so they employed a ‘Nut
Runner’ to manage her allergy.
Not wishing to trivialise what can
be a life threatening condition, I
was just amused to imagine, the
contestant’s helper filling in her
last job on her CV.
Dolores pay the penalty -
last gasp Monte winner
ONE of those sterner tests
that CD Montesinos have
been awaiting, arrived on
Sunday with the visit to
the "Cauldron" of a midtable
Dolores side that,
whilst not exactly banging
them in for fun at one end,
boast one of the stingiest
defences in the league at
the other.
A good crowd, well in excess
of 200, including a good
sized contingent from Dolores,
eagerly awaited the
contest.
Photos by Terry Harris
by Steve Robinson
Missing talismanic front
man and leading scorer Gonzalo,
as well as the lynchpin
in the defensive triumvirate,
Santos, meant that Monte
had to shuffle the starting
pack yet again.
The first period was a
scrappy, lacklustre contest
with both sides evenly
matched and effectively cancelling
each other out. Although,
on balance, Dolores
just shaded the goal-scoring
chances chart, but honestly,
both looked somewhat toothless
up front. Not the "battle
royal" or goal-fest that some
had optimistically predicted.
The half petered out much
as it had started, all square.
HT: CD Montesinos 0 CD
Dolores 0.
The second half served up
pretty much the same stodgy
fare, with neither keeper or
indeed defence truly tested.
Montesinos looked sluggish
going forward, with
nippy midfielder Luis almost
alone if offering anything
imaginative.
Whilst Dolores seeming to
be happier going across the
pitch "crab like", rather than
penetrating forward with
any great intent. Like a lot
of sides I’ve watched at this
level, technically very good,
some excellent ball players
too, but, no team ethic or
purpose.
The match looked increasingly
like finishing as a bore
draw, when almost at the
death, the referee, who had
made more of a nuisance
of himself than some of the
players with his oblique
decision making, correctly
awarded Monte a nailed on
penalty for a clumsy foul in
the box.
Cometh the hour and all
that, up stepped towering
sub MANU SANCHEZ (9),
and calmly stroked the ball
in the corner. It would be a
cliché to say, the crowd went
wild, but they did, along with
11 of the players on the pitch.
Dolores looked suitably
crestfallen, given their efforts
to get something from
the game. The wind had
been well and truly, taken
from their sails.
A couple of nervous minutes
later, the final whistle
called time on an otherwise
forgettable match.
In the final, if simplified,
analysis, Monte will play
better than this and lose,
but the test of a good side is
to play badly and still find a
way to win. They certainly
did this time out and so, the
crusade to gain promotion
moves on to the next one.
RESULTS for week commencing
21st October,
2019.
Mike Mahony and Olga
Douglas had a great start
to their week. Having been
paired together in our ‘2
ball better ball’ competition,
on Monday, they took the
spoils with a tremendous 47
points.
Close behind them, with
a score of 44 points (which
would normally be enough
to win), were Bryan Neal
and the ‘evergreen’ Reg
Akehurst.
On Wednesday, it was
the third and final round of
our ‘Championship’ Medal.
Winner on the day, with a
net score of 70, was Olga
Douglas, who was followed
home by Trevor Pullyblank,
with a net 72. Mike Chapman
was in the frame with
73.
There were three ‘2’s today,
going to Dave Pulling,
Ron Phipps and Liz
Robertson.
Mike Mahony’s and Olga
Douglas’s run of form continued.
With the best two
cards out of the three to
count, Mike took the overall
men’s title with net 146,
whilst Olga came out top in
the ladies section, also with
146.
Mike only just triumphed
over Mike Chapman on
countback! Rachel Lee was
the ladies runner-up with a
net 148.
who is set to finish second in
Japanese Grand Prix for
his 10th race victory of the
Marquez, 26, who secured
his sixth world title by winning
in Thailand earlier this
Dovizioso. It was the Spanish
Honda rider’s third win at the
Twin Ring Motegi track, and
it also sealed Honda’s 25th
constructors title on home soil.
British Honda rider Cal
Crutchlow finished fifth with
the overall standings, managed
to accelerate ahead of
Marquez at the start, but the
Spaniard almost instantly
regained the lead and stayed
there for the remainder of
the race.
The next race takes place
month, finished ahead of Spain’s Maverick Vinales at Phillip Island in Australia
French rookie Fabio Quar-
Peace
deal
struck
BARCELONA and Atletico
Madrid have made a deal
over the controversial approach
to Antoine Griezmann,
who left Madrid in
the summer.
Barcelona were fined a
paltry 300 euros for holding
talks with the French star
before his release clause was
reduced from 200 million euros
to 120 million euros.
The peace deal between
the clubs will see Barca pay
Atletico 15 million euros and
an option to look at five Atletico
players in the future,
including Saul and Jose
Giminez.
The option doesn´t mean
THE first El Clasico of
the season between Barcelona
and Real Madrid
has been rescheduled for
Wednesday December
18th.
Barça were initially due to
host their arch-rivals at the
Nou Camp on tomorrow, but
the game was postponed by
the Spanish Football Federation
(RFEF) last week because
of security concerns in
Catalunya.
Both clubs rejected a proposal
that the game could
be played at Real’s Bernabéu
Stadium instead and
offered December 18th as
their preferred option.
Prograis’ title and the Muhammad
Ali trophy, as well
as retaining his own IBF
“Taylor will be a challenge,
he could potentially
be a threat,” said Prograis.
“I have seen his style before.
I have been in with big, tall
that Barca will have to buy
them, but they gave the La
Liga champions a chance to
match any bid that Atletico
might receive for those players.
a real good fighter and that’s
what makes it so intriguing.”
The other part of the double
bill headliner will see
an all British heavyweight
clash between Derek Chisora
and David Price, who
replaced New Zealand´s ex-
WBO Joseph Parker, who
pulled out at the start of the
month.
The two clubs have also
agreed to keep secret, emails
and conversations held between
Griezmann and his
representatives which revealed
that he wanted to
move to Barcelona back in
March.
HOME NATIONS
FACE
BIG
TEST
FRIDAY 25TH OCTOBER 2019 31
Mexican caution
by Alex Trelinski
MERCEDES say they are
expecting a difficult time
at this Sunday’s Mexican
Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton
seeks to tie up the
drivers’ title.
Hamilton will secure a
sixth world championship
if he out-scores team-mate
Valtteri Bottas by at least 14
points.
But that task will be made
harder by the fact Mercedes
do not expect the Mexico
City track to suit their car.
“The four remaining races
are not going to be easy and
we expect Mexico to be the
most difficult,” said Mercedes
boss Toto Wolff.
Mercedes sealed their
sixth consecutive constructors’
championship at the
last race in Japan and, because
Hamilton can now be
caught only by Bottas, they
set a record of six consecutive
championship doubles.
Hamilton has clinched his
last two titles in Mexico but
says he does not expect to be
able to repeat the feat this
year.
“Mexico is generally our
worst race of the year because
of the way our car is
set up and it’s going to be a
tough one for us. The last
few have been pretty shocking,
even though we’ve won
the title there”, said the
world champion.
THE 2019 Rugby World
Cup in Japan reaches
the semi-final stage this
weekend, as England and
Wales face two major obstacles
in trying to book a
place in the final.
Defending champions
and hot favourites New
Zealand meet England in
Yokohama this Saturday
morning(10.00am kick-off,
live on ITV), with England
hoping to make their first
by Alex Trelinski
World Cup final since 2007.
England have not beaten
New Zealand since November
2012, and England head
coach Eddie Jones has played
the psychological card by saying
that his side are underdogs
and that the pressure is
on the All Blacks to win.
He said: "No-one thinks
we can win. New Zealand
talk about walking towards
pressure – well the pressure
is going to be chasing them
down the street.”
On Sunday, Yokohama
then hosts the second semifinal
clash as Wales take on
South Africa(10.00am kickoff,
live on ITV).
Wales will be aiming to
reach their first World Cup
final, but the Springboks
have beaten them in the last
two tournaments, though
Wales have been victorious
four times since a tight defeat
in the 2015 semi-final.
It´s also nearing the end
of a Welsh era when coach
Warren Gatland bows out of
being in charge of the current
Six Nations champions.
The final will be played in
Yokahama next Saturday,
with a rather inconsequential
third-place meeting between
this weekend´s losers
being staged on Friday in
Tokyo.
Everybody out
by Alex Trelinski
ALMOST 200 women footballers
in Spain’s first division
have voted to strike
in a disagreement over
pay and conditions in the
top league.
The action was supported
by 93 per cent of players employed
by 16 clubs at a meeting
in Madrid on Tuesday after
more than a year of failed
negotiations.
Clubs are proposing a
minimum wage of €16,000,
but unions representing the
players are asking for at
least €20,000.
A date for the strike has
not been set.
One of the unresolved issues
relates to women players
being recognised as fulltime
professional footballers.
The salaries of those on
part-time contracts was also
a stumbling block, the Association
of Spanish Footballers
(AFE) said.
The three unions representing
the players want a
minimum of €12,000, but
the clubs are proposing
€8,000.
“We are 100 per cent football
players, every hour of
the day,” said Ainhoa Tirapu,
vice-president of the AFE
women’s football committee
and a goalkeeper for Athletic
Bilbao and the women’s national
team. “But there are
red lines such as bias.”
