The
Christmas
Present Tale
We have never been an extravagant present
giving family and every year I dread the whole
present buying shenanigans. I know I am a
miserable old Grinch but I can’t help it, along
with an aversion to cleaning, it’s genetic...
My mum prides herself on sourcing unusual
and often, it has to be said, strange gifts. As
a supporter of many a worthy cause she uses
their Christmas catalogues for inspiration.
Inevitably one of us will end up with a CD of
whale mating calls (usually Gary, thankfully!)
or a microwavable pillow stuffed with cherry
pips (yes that really was a thing).
Another recent corker (pun intended) was
a wine tasting evening for four (also given
to Gary). It sounded great. Free wine and
the promise of a complimentary bottle at the
end of the night. We persuaded two mates
(who don’t have naughty dogs) to host the
evening. I have to say it was one of the
most cringe worthy nights ever. Mr Vino
turned up with his cool box and proceeded
to give us dolls house sized samples whilst
generously topping his own glass up. At the
end of the evening he asked us for our order.
Tumbleweed blew across the fl oor... to fill the
crashing silence I foolishly asked how much
for a bottle...the cheapest was about £19,
minimum order of 12!!! Cue more tumbleweed
and stifl ed giggling. Then Mr Vino turned
nasty as he was ushered out by my poor
friend who hasn’t invited us back since.
Every year there are always smellies and
pants. I usually get a gift set of talc and
soap (does anyone even use these toiletries
anymore?). To make matters worse it is
usually lavender scented. Not being funny
but I’m not 90 yet (although by the end of
Christmas I usually look and feel it). And then
we get to the comedy pants (Gary again)...
Always hilariously over-sized and usually
with some super hero theme. However, when
these start to be worn on a daily basis (as
pointed out by youngest son), they are no
longer remotely funny and you know it’s time
for a trip to M&S.
Once the presents are purchased they must
be wrapped. Sitting cross legged on the
bedroom fl oor surrounded by paper, sellotape
and weirdly shaped gifts (why do I do that?)
I take a deep breath and begin, consuming
at least one chocolate orange in the process
(sorry dad, I’ll get you another one). Which
reminds me, a couple of years ago my dad
really excelled himself by wrapping presents
up in tin foil as he couldn’t be arsed to get
wrapping paper...and you wonder where I get
it from!
I will end on a note about cards. Why buy
Christmas cards for your nearest and dearest
when you can use the British Red Cross
freebies that come through the post? Yes
boys, I know...
I hope you all get what you wish for (and
plenty besides).

It’s Christmas time. . .
Hey, Christmas is here! Line up the Bing Crosby
albums on the gramophone and stick a copy of
It’s A Wonderful Life in the VHS player. Let’s
just be really clear before we get stuck in, this is not
going to be an article where I wax lyrical pining for the
good old days when Christmas was much better than
it is nowadays. Quite the opposite in fact, Christmas
today is great albeit a bit different to when I was a lad.
And just so we all remain friends Christmas in my
house doesn’t start until Bing Crosby goes on the Spotify
playlist and It’s A Wonderful Life gets a dusted off DVD
case (yes, I still own DVD’s). So what’s changed then?
Obviously the advent of being married with children
means that I get to have new traditions. Some of these
are shaped by my own upbringing, others by my wife’s,
and the rest we’ve made up ourselves with the kids.
When I was a lad we had a very clear structure to the
day. We’d wake up to stockings from Santa which would
be opened before the sun rose. Once we’d all eaten our
chocolate oranges we’d head downstairs for breakfast
and with that tucked away we’d help mum prepare
lunch. With this set we’d get dressed and head to church
for the Christmas Day service. Having completed the
formalities we’d return home to our set familial tasks.
My job, as the youngest, was to take the presents from
under the tree and sort them into piles for the various
family members. Then, the dinner…
Our Christmas dinner had all the trimmings, nothing
unusual there. A hearty family feast was had by all.
After our lunch we’d have to clear back and do the
dishes. Then, with that behind us the coffee and biscuits
would come out and we’d finally start to unwrap the
presents. At 3pm precisely we’d have to pause whatever
we were doing and watch the Queen’s speech. With that
done it was time to tune into the big Christmas movie
(usually James Bond) and we’d sit back and finally let
our lunch digest.
But that wasn’t the end of it, come 5 o’clock the tea
trolley would be wheeled in with a full cheeseboard,
a freshly cooked ham and an assortment of crackers.
Don’t mind if I do thanks! And yes, I’ll have a glass of
red wine while I’m at it.
At this point, those of us that were still awake would
start bartering for who got to choose the evening movie.
We’d rarely agree on what to watch, but somehow a
successful negotiation would take place that could
teach the UN a thing or two and at least a couple of
us would be happy. At some point on this journey the
sherry would get opened and after half a small glass
mum would probably be tipsy and start doing Billy
Connelly impressions.
And then, eventually, we’d head off to bed ready to start
again on Boxing Day when we either visited relatives or
they came to us and we started all over again.
Nowadays we don’t do half of this, for one thing we
don’t even eat turkey (the kids just don’t like it). But we
have created our own traditions and the big day has a
rhythm that is unique to us and takes the best bits of
what both my wife and I value. Whilst neither of us are
religious we view this time of year as an opportunity to
celebrate our family and friends and not take any of it
for granted.

you want, and thanks for reading my articles. I hope
they’ve made you laugh a little this year.
*Just to address the elephant in the room, I am well aware
that the Christmas I described in this article may be the
most middle class thing I’ve ever written. I’m not even
going to apologise for it. If you need me I’ll be in the east
wing admiring the view.

The new park and play area at Haywood Road
Green, Mapperley was officially opened in
September with a community celebration.
The park has been transformed from a bowling green
into a play area with rope pyramid, seesaws, slide,
roundabout, balance beams, swings, picnic tables,
benches and a table tennis area.
The Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Sandra Barnes,
officially opened the park during the family event that
included a table tennis challenge, community picnic, a
variety of stalls and activities and an art exhibition at
Haywood Road Community Centre, next to the green.
Gedling Borough Council and FCC Communities
Foundation Ltd, a not-for-profit business that awards
grants for community, conservation and heritage
projects, jointly provided the funding for the new
park. The council provided £70k and a further £70k
was provided by FCC Communities Foundation Ltd
following a joint bid by the council and the Haywood
Road Community Association.
Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John
Clarke said;
“The new facilities look absolutely fantastic, and what
a difference this will make for the community. The play
area looks brilliant and I’m sure it will be very popular
with local residents. We listened to the feedback from
residents and community groups and worked with
them to make this happen. I’d like to thank everyone
involved in this transformation.”

1990 What makes It’s a Wonderful
Home Alone is hands down my
Life an essential masterpiece?
favourite Christmas film of all time.
Everything about this film is great. Macaualy
Culkin plays Kevin so well at the age of only
eight. He portrays him as a bratty, annoying
kid to start off with but as it goes along, he
manages to add so much heart and humour to
the character that it’s truly impossible to dislike
him. The increasingly bombastic situations
across the film’s runtime are so entertaining
throughout as Kevin single-handedly sets up
homemade traps in an attempt to defend
his house from two criminals. These are also
standouts, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel
Stern who are so hilarious that you love to
hate them. The film has an amazing Christmas
atmosphere aided by the magic original score
by John Williams and it all makes for a true
Christmas classic and an absolute must-watch
family film.

and ‘film’ in the same sentence, there’s a
good chance one would
also mention Frank
Capra’s vibrant tale of
George Bailey in it too.
It’s A Wonderful Life has
inspired and sustained
people’s appreciation
of the holiday spirit for
over seven decades
with its stylish 40s swing
and it doesn’t take ‘the
richest man in town’ to see why. James
Stewart gives one of the most endearing
performances in a classic film of a beatendown
good-hearted man sacrificing his
happiness goals for the good of his small
community, only to realise his happiness
was with him all along. Every snappy scene
is full of twisted currents of chemistry, being
sacrificial with some painful breaks of the
working man’s condition when it needs to,
in order to make those shining re-arises
more wonderfully endearing. But where It’s
a Wonderful Life’s heart lies is in its heavily
flawed characters who often cycle through,
connecting and sadly breaking off. Why?
Because they’re only human. And the film’s
timeless message is that that’s not such a
bad thing. And as long as one gives and has
friends, happiness will always be perched
on your shoulder.

out their new venue on a Friday night and after only being
open eleven weeks the place is buzzing. It has the feel of
a pub that has been open for years and everyone looks at
home.
For starters we chose the Leek & Potato Soup, Chive Crème
Fraiche, Baked Breads £5.95, which was delightfully
creamy and fresh. Seasonal Mushrooms on Toast, Toasted
Ciabatta, Black Truffle Cream, Shaved Parmesan £7.50
absolutely delicious & Sliced Iberico Chorizo, Hot Crispy
Fried Brie, Tomato Tapenade, Capers & Water Cress £6.95
perfect for the cheese lover amongst us.
The mains we went for were the Braised Beef, Buttered
Spinach, Fondant Potato, Glazed Carrot, Braised &
Crispy Onions £18.50, which fell apart in the mouth and
was complimented beautifully with the sides. Vegetable
Pot ‘Pie’, Creamed Cabbage, Swede, Beetroot, Goats
Cheese, Mash & Crispy Onions £12.95 wow, an amazing
combination of flavours and textures, who would have
thought beetroot and goats cheese would go so well?
Lastly we picked Confit Creedy Carver Duck Leg, Crispy

Potato, Koffman Cabbage, Squash Puree, Duck Sauce

Next came the hardest decision of the night - the desserts.
In the end we decided on the Hot Chocolate Fondant,
Coconut Marshmallow & Passion Fruit Cream £7.95,
pure heaven on a plate. Peanut Butter Cheesecake,
Banana Caramel, Brandy Snap, Chocolate Sorbet £6.95,
an absolute treat for the taste buds. Sticky Toffee Pudding,
Muscovado Caramel Sauce, Vanilla Ice Cream £6.95, a
perfect winter warmer and Baked Apple Crumble Tart,
Toasted Oats, Tonka Bean £6.95, a twist on an English
classic that paid dividends.
Thankfully we didn’t need rolling out of the door, even

Party Favourites
As the Christmas party season approaches
I think it’s always handy to have a few dishes
up your sleeve that you can serve as and when
people pop round.
The recipe for coronation chicken was handed
down to me from my mum. I remember
parties where it would be the star of the show.
Originally created in 1953 by Rosemary Hume
and Constance Spry for the coronation of
Elizabeth II, coronation chicken is still as popular
today. Although there are hundreds of diff erent
interpretations of this dish, the recipe I have
shared is pretty close to the original. I also love
this chicken served in wraps or with jacket
potatoes.
Talking of which, potatoes are cheap and very
adaptable. Cook a few jacket spuds and before
you know it you have a couple of great party
dishes. Again these are very fl exible and you
can add whatever takes your fancy. Let your
imagination run wild and have some fun!

Granny Annie’s
Coronation Chicken
Small onion – chopped
1 tbsp olive oil
2 tsp garam masala
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground coriander
5 tbsp red wine
2 tbsp tomato puree
Juice and rind of 1 x lemon
2 tbsp apricot jam
Mayonnaise
Plain yoghurt or crème fraiche
Cooked chicken
In a small saucepan, gently cook the
onion for 10 mins until soft. Add the
spices and cook for 30 secs. Add the
red wine, tomato puree, lemon rind
and juice. Simmer gently for 10 mins.
Add the apricot jam and leave to cool.
Once cool, strain through a sieve into
a bowl. This is your concentrated
coronation sauce. Now, depending on
how much chicken you have, mix the
concentrated sauce with mayo, stir in
the chicken and serve in lettuce leaves.
As a rough guide, for 300g cooked
shredded chicken, use 2 tbsp mayo,
2tbs yoghurt or crème fraiche and mix
in 1-2 tbsp coronation sauce. Taste
as you go. There is enough sauce to
dress a whole poached and shredded
chicken. For a big party, you could
serve the chicken spread out on a big
serving platter. That’s how I remember
my mum doing it.
** The concentrated sauce can also be
frozen.
Crispy Potato Skins
6 x small baking potatoes
Olive oil
50g grated cheese
2 tbsp soured cream
1 x spring onion – fi nely chopped
Salt and pepper
Heat oven to 200°C. Pierce the spuds
with a skewer. Rub with olive oil. Bake
in oven until soft (about 1 hour). Remove
from oven and allow to cool enough to
handle. Half and carefully scoop out
most of the potato (leave a thin layer).
Increase the oven to 250°C, brush the
potato skins inside and out with more
olive oil, sprinkle with salt and place
on a baking sheet. Bake for 10 mins,
then fl ip over and bake for another 10
mins. Remove from oven, sprinkle with
grated cheese and return to the oven
for 2 minutes. Remove and allow to cool
slightly, then spoon in some sour cream
and sprinkle with chopped spring onion.
Makes 12.
Other fi lling ideas: cheese, crispy bacon
and half a cherry tomato; cheese, chorizo
and sour cream; Cheese, avocado and
crispy bacon
Potato Croquettes
Mashed potato (from the previous
recipe)
Butter
50g grated cheese
50g cooked ham – fi nely chopped
1 tbsp fl our
1 egg
2 or 3 tbsp breadcrumbs (I used panko)
Salt & pepper
Paprika (optional)
Olive oil
In a bowl mash the potato with a knob
of butter, the cheese and ham. Season
to taste and chill in the fridge for at
least 30 mins. The longer you leave
the potato the easier it is to handle.
Get 3 shallow bowls, put the fl our in
one, beaten egg in another and the
breadcrumbs in the third (add a tsp of
paprika if you want a bit more colour
and fl avour). Using your hands shape
small amounts of the potato into small
sausage shapes (about half a fi nger in
length). Roll in the fl our, then the egg
and then cover in the breadcrumbs.
Place on a baking sheet, chill in fridge
for 30 mins. This should help them
keep their shape when baking. When
ready to bake, spray with olive oil (I
used a 1 cal spray). Bake at 200°C
for 20 mins until golden brown. Makes
about 15 depending on size.

Market Square (14 Nov - 31 Dec).
Search for the perfect gift from the
traditional, Bavarian-style stalls, pick
up delicious homemade and artisan
cheeses, chutneys and chocolates. I
have a tradition now of taking a break
from shopping to enjoy a mulled wine
or hot chocolate with Baileys at the
unique Helter Skelter Bar but you can
also make a full evening of it at the
Sur le Piste, the UK’s biggest mobile
ice bar.
Relax and be entertained as you
enjoy a mince pie and chocolates at a
different experience at The Malt Cross
(7/8 Dec). Come along to an evening
of tales and stories that capture the
imagination and the pure spirit of
Christmas.
Christmas light switch-ons are usually
a good place to find some naughty
but nice treats. For example the
Marshmallow Kitchen will be at the
Arnold switch on (22 Nov).
Expect a spectacular evening of

(6 Dec). What's more you can party

Cotgrave Forest Walk
Walk distance: about 4 miles
Difficulty: Easy - but remember to bring your wellies
as the paths get extremely muddy!

Starting point: Lambing Gap Lane (free parking)
This walk can get very muddy during wet weather,
but the views over Nottingham and Trent Valley are
worth getting a bit mucky for.
Cotgrave Forest itself is owned privately and
although there are public footpaths and bridleways
throughout, there are signs advising shooting takes
place there, so it is a good idea to keep your dog
on a lead if you haven’t yet mastered a good recall.
Turn right at the sign and walk back into Cotgrave
Forest. Follow this track until you reach the fork in
the road again. Go round the left hand bend and
follow the road round until you are back to the
starting point.
Follow Lambing Lane down in the car until the road
bends to the right, here you will find a layby with
space to park your car.
When you have parked up, follow the public
bridleway sign down past a green barrier to the
right of the forest. Follow the path until it reaches
a fork in the road. Turn left and follow it downhill
and over a stream.

Continue on this path until you find yourself leaving
the forest and at the village of Clipston you’ll pass
a large farm shop- Harkers- which is open Tuesday
– Saturday.
Go straight down the road (ignoring all other roads
to the left) until it bends to the right and goes
slightly downhill (this is a public road so watch out
for cars). Keep a look out for a restricted byway
sign on the right and follow it through an open
field.
Keeping to the right of the field, walk to the top of
the hill and carry on down a farm track. Keep on
this track until you reach a crossroads (about 3/4
mile). Then turn right. Cross a stream and carry on
walking until you read a bridleway sign to the right.

Remember that food used should come out of your
dog’s daily allowance to help prevent weight gain.
Sandpit/earthpit: If your dog likes digging holes
in the garden, try building him/her their very own
sandpit. Fill it with dirt or sand and bury some of their
toys to encourage them to dig in this area and not
your flowerbed!
Exercise: Exercise is really important and should
be altered to suit your pet’s age and any health
conditions they may have.
Things to try:
Dogs with lots of energy will benefit from plenty of off
lead exercise if safe to do so.
Play with their favourite toys on walks.
Training: Practicing commands (sit, paw, lay down,
leave etc) will help keep their brain busy.
Attend obedience/ agility classes.

WHAT’S
STOPPING
YOU ???
You’ve hit a wall in your progress, and you’ve
tried everything...
...and I mean everything. Even the fad diet
skinny tea that does nothing at all for your
body, except a little hydration (let’s not
completely beat down on them).
So, what is stopping you? Why can’t you trigger that response
you had in the early stages of your journey? What changed
along the way?
Nothing you say, OK…. read on, this is for you.
How are you managing yourself? Your mind, your sleep,
your stress?
Ever tracked these factors when in a weight loss program?
I’m asking a lot of questions because they need answering in
order for you to “unlock the block”.
If your stress levels have increased or your results now match
your stress level capability, then results will stall. Remember,
dieting and weight loss are a stress and if your day to day
stress level is already high you’ve added to this with dieting.
“But I can’t change this Andy”, I hear this a lot; my client’s
stress management is often the reason that things slow down.
Family issues, work worries, social dilemmas…these things
can creep up on us without us being aware. You’ve stuck
to your plan, but nothing is happening, so you cut more
calories, start exercising more. What are you doing???
Increasing stress.
You might see it is being more proactive, dealing with the
weight loss plateau, but really all you’ve done is given the
body another reason to fight back.
So what can you do?
Here are a few coaching points I give clients:
1. Make a sleep log of each night.
2. Record how much water you’re consuming
daily.
3. Write out three priorities for tomorrow
before bed, and clear your mind.
4. It’s OK to have ME time. Go for a walk, sit
in silence or go do something to break the
pattern.
You don’t need to train harder, starve yourself or neglect
yourself mentally. What you do need to do is listen to the
signs and work out…. how do I get past this block?
Why not give those four pointers a try for the next week and
take note of what it is that’s coming up that seems to be
slowing down your progress. That’s the direction you need
to take.

Gedling Country Park, Arnot Hill Park and Burton
Road Jubilee Park joined a record number of parks
and green spaces collecting a Green Flag Award.
Arnot Hill Park, which celebrates its 100 year
anniversary later this month, has retained the award
for the 13th consecutive year, Gedling Country Park
for the 3rd year in a row and Burton Road Jubilee Park
also received the award for the fifth time.
The parks are among a record-breaking 1,970 UK
parks and green spaces and 131 in thirteen other
countries around the world that will today receive a
prestigious Green Flag Award, the mark of a quality
park or green space.
This international award, now into its third decade, is
a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest
possible environmental standards, is beautifully

spend an average of 3,515 full days
at work over the course of their
lifetime – that’s a lot of opportunity
to be unhappy and discontent.

Asters
STARS OF THE AUTUMN GARDEN
If one fl ower embodies the joy of
the autumn garden then it must
be the Aster, or Michaelmas
Daisy to give it its common
name.
These brilliant bloomers come in
a vast array of heights from low
mounds for the front of the border
to stately, towering giants for the
back and in colours including
violet, blue, crimson, pink and
white. To cap it all there are
even asters that bloom in spring!
The biggest range of colours
and heights comes from the
New York Asters including low
growing ones like the “Red
Robin”, through to 5ft giants.
These are the most prone to
mildew and good growing
conditions are essential. This
includes: compost-rich, moist soil
and a good dose of fertiliser in
the spring. The clumps should
be divided regularly in spring
and the small sections should be
planted around 9-12in / 22-
30cm apart to ensure good air
circulation. Cut the stems down
after fl owering and clear away
dead leaves and mulch in late
winter.
The heather-leaved Aster (Aster
ericoides) has tiny leaves like
a heather but grows into a 3ft
/ 90cm tall bushy plant and
is covered with masses of tiny
fl owers in autumn. This one also
needs good growing conditions.
The New England Asters like
the tall pink “Connie” and the
equally tall purple “Helen Picton”
are generally free of problems
and tolerate drier soils.
Earlier to fl ower and always
healthy in our garden is the 2ft
6in / 75cm, “Mönch” with his
large lavender blue fl owers from
late July into October.
Asters aren’t just good for us
to enjoy, they also provide a
wonderful nectar source for
butterfl ies like the Comma,
Peacock, Red Admiral and Small
Tortoiseshell that continue to
feed well into October. To see
a tall plant of aster “Daybreak”
(“Octendgloren” to give her the
proper Dutch name) covered with
butterfl ies on a sunny October
day is such a thrilling sight.
Some Asters give great value
in the garden from their dark,
almost black, glossy leaves
and stems: “Calliope” is the
best of these and looks great
for months before the masses
of small, lavender-blue fl owers
burst forth in October. She grows
to about 4-5ft / 1.2-1.5m tall
and spreads to form a sizable
clump. The pale violet fl owered
“Vasterival” is similar in habit.
Asters look great planted with
autumn fl owering grasses or
low growing Ice Plants (Sedums)
or even planted on mass for a
dazzling display of colour.
Oh, and that spring-fl owering
one? It’s the Alpine Aster and
you can grow this little plant from
seed – look out for Aster alpinus.

Get Cosy
this Christmas...
With Christmas around the corner,
now is a good time to think about
getting your home ready for winter.
No-one wants to be sitting down for
Christmas dinner without any heating
or hot water.
So what can you do to make your
home warm and cosy at Christmas?
BOILER & CENTRAL
HEATING
If your boiler hasn’t been serviced
regularly then now could be the
time to start. British Gas and many
other energy companies offer a
Homecare package that you can opt
to pay for monthly. Many plumbers
also offer a boiler service for about
£60. It’s worth shopping around and
seeing what your options are.
Currently, the big energy providers
are offering to replace your broken
or faulty boiler with a brand-new
energy-efficient one. You don’t
need to be on benefits to access
this money. You will need to pay
a contribution of £240. Be quick
though before all of the grant money
runs out!
DRAUGHTS
They are one of those annoying
things that can really have a
noticeable effect on the temperature
inside your house. If you have any
gaps in windows, doors, floors and
other junctions, it’s a good idea
to get them filled. Depending on
where they are, you can either do
this yourself or get a handyperson in
to do this for you.
Sausage dog draught excluders
are also a cheap option for doors.
Lining curtains and drawing them
in the evenings will also help keep
that precious heat in.
CHIMNEYS
Is your chimney open? If you don’t
use a fire then you could be losing a
lot of heat up the chimney. You can
buy a chimney balloon for £15 from
DIY shops. There is also a product
called Chimney Sheep which is a
breathable insulation. Remember,
your chimney needs to breathe.
If you block it up completely, you
should still ensure that there is an air
vent. You want to encourage warm
air from the room to be sucked up
through the chimney to get rid
of any moisture and dampness.
Even though your chimney may be
capped at the top, it should still have
a vent to enable air to escape.
FLOORS
Chances are, if your home is not
a new-build, the floor may not
be insulated. Most houses have a
suspended timber floor, which can
be draughty and make your room
feel very cold.
Depending on how easy it is to
access, you might want to consider
insulating this. If you can’t access
underneath the floor, then removing
the existing floor boards will be time
consuming and costly. However, if
you do insulate then fill between
the joists with Kingspan insulation.
Don’t insulate over the joists,
unless you plan to use wood-fibre
insulation. Check that your airvents
around the property are also
clear to ensure adequate airflow.
When timber gets wet, it will start to
rot and/or you may get woodworm.
If you are planning on having a new
carpet and don’t want to pull your
floor boards up (or you have a solid
concrete floor), then you can install
a thin layer of insulation before you
install your carpet and underlay.
Speak to your local carpet shop,
or you can buy a pack at B&Q to
lay yourself. This will help seal the
drafts and give you some respite
from the cold air beneath your feet.
LOFT & CAVITY-WALL
INSULATION
You can lose up to a quarter of the
heat in your home through your
uninsulated loft. By installing at least
270mm of mineral fibre insulation,
you could save up to £300 per year.
The large energy companies offer
an ECO grant (Energy Companies
Obligation Scheme). If you are on
benefits, you may qualify for free
loft and cavity wall insulation.
HELP WITH FUEL COSTS
The government provide a oneoff
tax free Winter Fuel Payment
between £100 and £300. If you are
eligible, you should have received a
letter from the government, telling
you how much you will get. In
very cold weather, you may also be
eligible for Cold Weather Payments.
The large energy companies also
offer a Warm Home Discount.
Check with your energy company to
see if you qualify as you may get a
£140 rebate.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Make sure you do some general
maintenance on your property, or
get someone in to help. So if the
gutter looks leaky, it’s probably
a good idea to get it repaired or
replaced before it gets any worse and
you have water entering your home.
So start on those niggly jobs now,
to make sure you have a cosy
Christmas.

Roads at Christmas

Mapperley in the 1830’s and 40’s was a tough
place for ordinary working people. Jobs were
scarce and those that were available were either
working short time or with reduced pay.
In 1839, as Christmas approached, the local
parish was under considerable pressure. The
Board of Guardians, who were responsible for
providing relief to these working people, were
receiving more and more applications and were
overwhelmed. There was no welfare state and
no unemployment benefits at the time. The only
available funds were the meagre resources
handed out by the local Board of Guardians.
These were made up of a rate levied on the local
population. In such desperate times, with so
many out of work, more payments were going
out and very little money was coming in.
The hardest hit appeared to be the framework
knitters and the glove makers. A large number
of local people were engaged in the hosiery
trade and the fashion for hose and stocking
had taken a downward trend. This was not
just the men, as whole families, including
wives and children, were also engaged in the
manufacturing process.
The only solution that the authorities could
come up with was to employ some of these men
in what would now be called public works. Not
enough money was coming in to pay them from
the normal funds, not even a small amount. The
money for these public projects could then be
used to pay the men and the community would
also benefit. It was agreed that out of work
men with three or more children would be so
engaged.
The men were given the job of building a
proper road through Mapperley. At the time
this was still a dirt track. They were also set to
constructing what would become Woodborough
Road and Ransom Road.
These were skilled men who had trained for over
seven years to use a stocking frame producing
fine socks, lace ware and silk items. They were
now digging up Mapperley Hills in the middle
of winter with spades and picks and using
wheelbarrows to remove the spoil. They were
used to sitting at a machine all day, not this type
of hard labour.
For this work they were paid, not in money,
but in bread and vegetables so at least they
had food on the table. The only other choice
for these men was to take their families into
the Basford Union Workhouse. This was not
somewhere they would want to go, only as a last
resort. Inside the workhouse the family would
be split up, with the men, children and women
all put in different wings of the workhouse with
no contact.
This was not the first time that local authorities
had to resort to this type of relief. Some 30
years earlier, Arnold framework knitters had
been employed to dig out the Redhill and to
make the cutting that we see today. All this was
carried out with picks and shovels by people
who were not labourers.
So, when you drive along Mansfield Road or
through Mapperley, bringing home the presents
and Christmas goodies, spare a thought for
the men who built the original roads to make it
better for you, just to stop their families from
starving.

Charlotte Mendly is the Musical Director for the
Your Community Choir group. She is a singing
teacher and pianist and runs community choirs in
Nuthall, Ilkeston and Brinsley.
Mindfulness and mental health are such current
topics in todays society. Creating the ideal work/
life balance can be a tricky task and so many of
us can relate to periods of stress, anxiety and
even depression. Finding an activity that ignites
endorphins (the happy hormone), is a step in the right
direction to taking hold of our mental health.
Did you know that singing in a group not only releases
endorphins, but also a rather special hormone;
oxytocin? This is sometimes referred to as the
bonding hormone, and it is the same hormone that
aids the social attachment between mother and child.
Oxytocin is released when singing in a group, as the
unity with the voices creates a sense community.
The great thing about community singing is that you
gain a whole new singing family, and the release of
endorphins and oxytocin are actually just an added
extra.
So how can I get singing? Look for a choir in your area
and give it a go. The ladies from Your Community
Choir tell me it’s the better than therapy, and a whole
lot cheaper!

Alzheimer’s Society’s Nottingham Memory Walk
back in September.
Joining Vicky in the sea of blue shirts were six
members of the acclaimed BBC programme Our
Dementia Choir – Ahmed, Betty, Chris, John, Jean
and Bernard, who are all living with dementia. The
group joined Vicky on stage to greet the enthusiastic
crowd, before singing Stand by Me (Ben E King) to
huge applause. Vicky then cut the ribbon alongside
John and Betty, to get the walk underway.
The event was Vicky’s ninth Memory Walk in
Nottingham. She is an Ambassador for Alzheimer’s
Society. The Line of Duty star completed the Memory
Walk with her fellow singers as well as members of
her own family in memory of her grandmother, Iris,
who was living with dementia before she died in 2015.
Vicky McClure said:
“There’s nothing nicer than seeing a sea of blue on
Wollaton Park! The choir members are true stars,
because they are so inspirational.
“We want to be in a place where dementia is getting
the right funding and we’re closer than ever to finding
a cure - which is why I’m calling on people all over
the country to join me and many others, by signing up

En-route a pit stop is scheduled at the Tree Tops
pub and restaurant on Mapperley Plains, before
completing the route into Arnold town centre.
Parking up in Arnold market place, there will be an
opportunity for riders to showcase their bikes, giving
local shoppers’ and their families a festive photo
shoot.
The Tour will then return to the Arrow for hot mince
pies, tea, coffee and the Mayors prize giving.

hELP FOR EU CITIZENS

We at Europe Direct East Midlands (North) would
like to provide information to help people who are
applying to the new scheme designed to register
EU citizens that wish to remain in the UK to live or
work after the UK leaves the European Union.
There are two status; settled (once a person has lived
in the UK for 5 years or more) and pre-settled status
(for those who reside in the UK but have not lived here
for 5 years).
The Government have agreed that EU citizens who
are resident in the UK before we leave the European
Union (scheduled for 31st October) have until
December 2020 to apply for settled or pre-settled
status. The requirements for EU citizens arriving after
the 31st October has yet to be decided.
EU citizens should only seek assistance from
recognised sources of help. All Citizens Advice
offices hold OISC Level 1 accreditation and can help
with standard applications. In Beeston the local
Citizens Advice run a Walk-in Centre on behalf of
Europe Direct East Midlands (North).
Digital assistance is available for those that require
help and are vulnerable as defined by the Home
Office. There are a number of agencies contracted
by the Home Office to assist vulnerable EU citizens
in person with their applications to the EUSS.
These include some Citizens Advice services, law
centres and other immigration advice centres. The
Home Office have published a list of contracted
organisations along with details of the various forms
of assistance.

It’s been a busy few weeks and
as ever I’ve got a few updates to
pass on.
First up, I’m pleased to report that
PC 2358 Mark Szeremeta has
joined the Gedling Neighbourhood
team as an additional officer. Mark
will be based at Carlton and is a
welcome addition to the team.
Last month the force supported the
national knife crime week of action
known as ‘Operation Sceptre’.
The Gedling neighbourhood team
and colleagues from across the
force were involved in a number
of proactive activities to try and

We also visited a number of
schools across Gedling Borough
to provide an educational input
around knife crime which was well
received by our local schools. The
force also carried out another
knife amnesty with the support
of Gedling Borough Council.
A number of unwanted knives
were handed in and will now be
destroyed.
September saw a slight decrease
in overall reported burglary
compared to August this year with
5 less offences. However, year
to date burglary continues to be
an issue. Offenders have mostly
gained entry by damaging windows
or doors and have targeted
properties whilst the occupants
have been away on holiday. I
would continue to ask that any
suspicious incidents are reported
to us as this may prevent further
offences from taking place. If you

In the last month I have attended
three community meetings with a
partnership meeting in Netherfield,
a Neighbourhood Watch meeting in
Daybrook and a visit to Calverton
Parish Council. I gave some
updates around our policing
activity across the area and the
work we are doing to reduce some
of the communities concerns.
Throughout the last few months
PCSO Trev Parkinson, based at
Carlton, has been working to
improve our ‘Community Road
Safety’ scheme. Trev has worked
to identify, recruit and train new
volunteers. We are aiming to
expand this work across Gedling
and recruit more volunteers. My
thanks to the individuals who have
given up their personal time to
support this initiative.
