considering using drugs to reconsider, or take steps to 

prevent overdose, following several severe illicit drug 

overdoses in the Castlegar area. 

The overdoses appear to be the result of cocaine contaminated 

with fentanyl. 

Anyone using illicit drugs is advised to take steps to 

reduce the risk: 

• Don’t mix different drugs (including pharmaceutical 

medications, street drugs and alcohol). 

• Don’t take drugs when you are alone. Use in the 

company of someone who can administer help or 

call 9-1-1 if you experience an overdose.

It is with great sadness 

that the family 

of Dennis Jensen 

announces his passing 

on October 16, 2019 at 

the age of 79. 

He passed away 

suddenly in the early 

morning hours in 

the Trail hospital 

surrounded by family. 

Dennis will forever be remembered by his partner 

Bonnie and his daughters Debbie, Traci, and Susan 

(Adam); his three grandchildren Cory, Shawn 

and Angela; his siblings Leslie, Stan (Colleen), 

Laura (Peter); and his nieces and nephews. He was 

predeceased by his wife Verna-Mae (2009). He will be 

dearly missed by his family and friends. 

A celebration of his life will be held at the Kaslo 

Arena viewing area on Saturday, November 9 at 2 pm 

followed by a reception in the curling lounge. 

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be 

made to either the Kaslo Logger Sports or the Kaslo 

Curling Club.

The family of Kenneth John 

Frie sadly announce his passing 

in Victoria, BC, on October 12, 

2019, at age 86. Ken was born 

August 16, 1933, in Trail, BC, 

third child to Bernard and Vera 

Frie. The family moved to Kaslo 

in July of 1945 for a healthier life. He married an Australian 

nurse, Patricia Hoad, on October 20, 1962. Ken is survived 

by his wife Patricia, son Gavin (Marnee) and daughter Tana; 

grandchildren Camyrn, Jenna; sisters Irene Edwards and 

Verna (Ken) Booth; 11 nephews and six nieces in Canada 

and Australia. He was predeceased by his parents, Bernard 

and Vera Frie and in-laws John and Gwyneth Hoad; his older 

brother Denis (Marie), brother-in-law Albert Edwards and 

Noel Hoad and nephews Rocky Frie and Jeffery Booth. 

He worked throughout his life as a faller and miner in 

various locations in the area, as well as up in Kitimat for the 

building of the smelter; on the construction of the Duncan 

Dam and finally with the Ministry of Forests until he retired. 

He was an avid gardener and RVer and loved getting 

out in his trailer. He was a active parishioner at Sacred 

Heart Roman Catholic Church. He was active in Kinsmen 

and served on the Council for the Village of Kaslo. He 

particularly enjoyed volunteering at the Kootenay Lake 

Archives as he had a great memory for people, places and 

events in the community. He enjoyed being a member of 

the Kaslo Senior Citizens Society and was very social and 

generally interested in others. He was always ready to lend 

a hand to anyone who asked and had a steady smile and was 

always cheerful. 

Funeral services were held Sat. Oct. 26, 2019, at Sacred 

Heart Catholic Church in Kaslo, BC. In lieu of flowers, the 

family kindly asks to please make donations to Kelowna 

General Hospital Foundation and their Advanced Heart

Kaslo May Days Event Planner 

Background: Kaslo Chamber of Commerce oversees 

and promotes this annual spring celebration on behalf 

of the Village of Kaslo and the town’s businesses and 

organizations. 

Expectation: That the successful candidate will coordinate 

the May Days 2020 by applying the best practices 

as are outlined in the ‘How To May Days’ manual, supplied 

in digital form at the request of all interested parties. 

After receiving the instructional manual, interested 

parties will submit their applications that will demonstrate: 

their understanding of, and their ability to plan such an 

event by completing a timeline of tasks they believe will 

culminate in a successful May Day celebration. 

The Chamber Board will be looking for a methodical 

and logical sequenced timeline based on the information 

given you. Familiarity with grant writing an is asset. 

Applicants are required to include proof in the form of 

accessible references from past event planning or similar 

experiences.

Apple pressing party a great success! 

Just a few days before Thanksgiving, the Kaslo Food 

Hub held its 5th Annual Apple Pressing Party outside the 

Kemball Building in downtown Kaslo. Three old-fashioned 

hand crank apple presses were set up and available 

for anyone to use. Families and friends came down with 

boxes of apples and empty jugs and after some hard work, 

smiles and laughter, were able to go home with full jugs 

of fresh pressed apple juice. All three presses were well 

used and participants were grateful for the opportunity to 

turn some of this year’s bumper apple crop into delicious 

juice. At the end of the day all the leftover apple mash was 

donated to a local pig farmer. The annual event is part of 

the Food Hub’s Feeding Families Not Bears program which 

seeks to reduce animal attractants in the community.
