Ministry invites… cont’d from pg 28
Columbia. Because of these responsibilities, the ministry
would like to ask for your opinions and ideas about how to
better support farmers, encourage farming and keep farmland
available for farming. We need to hear from British
Columbians on how best to move forward by asking for
your insight and opinions on how we can best:
• Support farmers and ranchers in the ALR to expand
and diversify their businesses
• Help new or young farmers become established on
the land and in business
• Ensure there is flexibility for residential options
while prioritizing agriculture in the ALR
Solutions to these challenges are needed now more than
ever as farmers face increased risks and unpredictability
related to climate change, rising land prices and pressure
to use farm land for non-farm uses. Your ideas are needed
so that the agriculture industry in BC continues to expand
and thrive. Feedback is invited until November 15, 2019
at 4 pm. To learn more go to https://engage.gov.bc.ca/supportingfarmers/
Apple pressing party a great success!
Just a few days before Thanksgiving, the Kaslo Food
Hub held its 5th Annual Apple Pressing Party outside the
Kemball Building in downtown Kaslo. Three old-fashioned
hand crank apple presses were set up and available
for anyone to use. Families and friends came down with
boxes of apples and empty jugs and after some hard work,
smiles and laughter, were able to go home with full jugs
of fresh pressed apple juice. All three presses were well
used and participants were grateful for the opportunity to
turn some of this year’s bumper apple crop into delicious
juice. At the end of the day all the leftover apple mash was
donated to a local pig farmer. The annual event is part of
the Food Hub’s Feeding Families Not Bears program which
seeks to reduce animal attractants in the community.
Ren is a sweet mellow male orange tabby who recently came to us as a stray.
His beautiful orange eyes look into yours so calmly and curiously. He makes
this lovely trilling sound to greet you. Yet this fellow has been through a
lot. When he first arrived, he was so infested with fleas that he had severe
anemia and was emaciated. Now that his fleas are gone, his strength is
returning and he’s beginning to gain some weight. If you would like to meet
this quiet beauty, come on over to the Nelson Branch today.
