Dialogue is the Sign of
CIVILIZED society

Any conflict can be resolved through dialogue. And dialogue happens
between whom? Between people of the same school of thought?
Between people who agree on everything?- No; Dialogue can only
happen between those groups or ideologies, who disagree with each
other. That means diversity is essential for dialogue. But intolerance for
diversity is the problem of today!
People of a certain type of
thought line want everyone
else to toe their line.
Whether in a domestic situation
or an institutional situation,
there is a tendency to eliminate
or boycott people who disagree
with your ideology. Boycotting
someone will not help to bring
about a dialogue.
A reformer can never be a ruler,
you know why? A ruler simply
gives judgments and punishes
people. A reformer never
punishes people, he educates
them. A reformer builds bridges,
not break them. A reformer will
not condemn anybody but will
bring them to an understanding
of love and peace. There is a
saying by a famous poet saint
in India, Kabir - “I went to look
out for a bad man but I couldn’t
find one. Then I went to look
out for good people, I could
find them everywhere.” When
you look at a culprit and point a
finger at him, you are a culprit,
you cannot reform him. You
have to take him by his arm
and make him realize that he is
a culprit. Inside every culprit
there is a victim crying for
help. We need to attend to that
victim. Heal the victim. Remove
the misunderstandings in the
victim. This is the path of
the reformer.
Dialogue in diversity is the
essence of education. It is a
sign of culture in society. And
now how to keep harmony in
diversity! I usually say that
fools fight over diversity, the
wise will rejoice in celebrating
diversity. Harmony in diversity
simply means that, the society
is getting better. People are
getting educated. They are
able to see the other person’s
point of view as well. And this is
much needed in society today.
When someone is stressed he
becomes violent, he doesn’t
hear or listen to anyone. Now,
with a stressed person you
cannot keep pointing a finger at
him - “You are so stressed, you
are hopeless, you are stupid,
you are foolish;” then there is
no chance of reforming him.
Same with kids, if you keep
telling a kid, “you are foolish,
you are dumb,” he will remain
dumb and foolish. This way, you
are not bringing up the good
qualities in them and allowing
them to blossom, to change or
to transform.
Most of the problems,
conflicts, in the world have
arisen out of lack of proper
dialogue, lack of proper
communication and lack of
mutual understanding. Usually
we say, let the other person
stretch their hand first, then I
will stretch. Each one will be
waiting for the other person
to stretch their hand first, and
it doesn’t happen. It is the
ego that brings about conflict.
Human values simply means
that you stretch your hand
first, whether the other person
stretches or not, it doesn’t
matter. When you stretch your
hand first, you will see that they
will stretch their hand too. The
power of love is much more
than the power of hatred. Hate
cannot be countered by hate.
Hate needs to be treated
with love.
If a person lacks human values,
what can we do to bring back
the human values in them is
what we need to look into. If we
all commit ourselves to uplift
human values in society, we will
leave behind a better world, a
more harmonious, loving and
beautiful world for the coming
generations.

their hearts, how will you
make them come to the
mainstream, how will they
understand human values.
No point in teaching human
values to someone who is
already peaceful, who already
nurtures human values. We
need the teaching of human
values for those who have
some bickering or hatred about
each other. Otherwise it will be
like - you open a hospital and
put a board saying “No entry
for sick people”. It makes no
sense. A criminal or somebody
who is not behaving well or the
anti-social elements are that
way because they were not
educated in the broad sense as
we have all been. We need to
educate them, I tell you, love
can transform society. I believe
in the power of love.
Spirituality to me is all that,
which uplifts human values.
Lack of spirituality brings two
problems in life, one is it brings
aggression and violence, on the
other hand it brings depression
and suicidal tendencies. If you
need to save yourself from
these extremities, you need
to nurture the human values,
the spiritual values which are
present in each and every one
of us. “No child is born criminal,
it is the situation, circumstances or
lack of education that makes them
to do those acts, of violence.”
We need to educate and uplift
people and bring to them the
knowledge of diversity, the
knowledge of human values.
Then, we will be able to create
a more harmonious, more
tolerant, loving and a better
world.
Stress is the main cause of
all problems in the world.
A reformer will never condemn
anybody. If you condemn
