CORPORATE AND GENERAL
NEWS
Poor communication, delays in
diagnosis and failures to recognise
pain. These are all common
complaints of people with a learning
disability. To combat this a team of
learning disability specialists are
making it their mission to ensure we
provide the same safe and effective
care to patients with learning
disabilities.
When a patient is unable to communicate
verbally, how do you know if they are in
pain? How do you know if they consent to
a procedure? Do they have the capacity to
consent? These are issues colleagues face
regularly. Until recently there has been little
guidance on best practice.
This month, the learning disability team
set off on a whirlwind tour of the Trust to
share their knowledge with colleagues.
Heartbeat caught up with Learning
Disability Project Facilitator, Pauline
Richards. She said “Whilst the care
provided by our colleagues to patients
living with learning disabilities and or
autism can be good, there still remains
gaps where it should be better. Staff that
are passionate and usually have a personal
interest in this field are a great resource
to us all and should be supported and
encouraged to share their skills and knowledge
to others. This would go a long way to
prevent and minimise the often variable and
unpredictable levels of service this group of
patients receives. The roadshows provided by
the learning disability team have given staff
the opportunity to come forward and ask
questions and learn how small changes can
have a big impact on patient care and positive
outcomes.”
Following in the footsteps of the roadshows,
the team will be hosting a free learning
disability and autis-m conference on 6
Team lead the way in the care of patients with learning disabilities
November at City Hospital. This will take place
at the postgraduate centre from 8.30am till
4pm.
The conference will show how colleagues can
improve the patient experience. They'll also get
to hear from patients with learning disabilities.
Attendees will receive a certificate that can be
used as evidence of continuous professional
development.
