EWL at Marymount Manhattan College explores texts and cultures from around the globe and gives you the tools to
become both a critical reader and sophisticated writer. The three concentrations in EWL are about the power of the
written word in its many forms of expression.
LITERATURE CONCENTRATION
Literature transports us across space and time through the imaginative craft of language and story-telling. The
Literature concentration at MMC goes beyond the usual reading lists with its global, cross-cultural approach. The
program also goes beyond simply reading: our students analyze, interpret, discuss, and debate the meaning of
compelling texts, classic and contemporary.
LITERATURE AND MEDIA CONCENTRATION
Within the Literature and Media concentration, the classic inspires the cutting edge; text
transforms into contemporary media. This is EWL’s home for budding film-makers, video
documentarians, long-form journalists, fan fiction writers, and social media practitioners
who bring literary sensibilities to their work.
CREATIVE WRITING CONCENTRATION
Is there a better place in the world to be a writer than New York City?
In the Creative Writing concentration, compose poetry, fiction, and
creative nonfiction in collaborative, workshop-based courses.
It’s all about the process: creative spark to draft, revision,
submission, and publication. See the work of our writers

History
The past is very much our present:
HIST at MMC
History has traditionally been a go-to major for undergraduates who want to
understand themselves and their world in context. Where we are now—and where we’re
headed—is embedded in history. This is still the spirit of the major at MMC, but our
interdisciplinary program puts you in charge of the exploration. Mix and match courses
from 23 available “areas of inquiry” to tailor a program to your exact historical interests,
such as history of the performing arts, medieval history, American history and culture,
or film/media history. Our innovative program teaches the fundamental skills that the
History major is known for—analyzing sources, evaluating evidence, and constructing
effective written and oral arguments—but it changes the game by placing you at the
center of the inquiry.

Interdisciplinary Studies
Imaginative and ground-breaking, just like you: IDS at MMC
Construct your own college degree at MMC with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies. Each IDS program is
individualized, self-designed, and boundary-crossing—an exact fit for your interests. Do sound design with technical
know-how and insights from the study of music and poetry. Make films about environmental sustainability, drawing
upon your knowledge of science, history, and international development. Examine the psychology and sociology of fan
fiction writers. The possibilities are endless. As an IDS major, you will work closely with a faculty team to assemble a
program that is yours, and yours alone.

The innovative program in International Studies at MMC puts
the pressing issues of our time in global perspective. Focus on
regions, governments, international relations, human rights,
development, and sustainability, all against the backdrop of
culture and economics. Then travel the world through our study
abroad programs or gain concrete experience right here in New
York City: the MMC United Nations Program offers qualified
juniors and seniors a full-time, semester-long professional
immersion at the UN, working with non-governmental
organizations (NGOs) and permanent missions of member states.

Politics and Human Rights majors at MMC examine
the world of politics in all of its complexity, with an
eye toward recognizing and addressing injustice right
here, in our communities, cities, and nation. PHR
covers the bases of a traditional political science
major but also locates these foundations in a broader
examination of society and culture. Excursions in
