MARYMOUNT MANHATTAN…
THEATRE
ARTS AT MMC
A liberal arts education is an integral part of
students’ theatre studies and training. It is our
philosophy that the more well-rounded the education
of theatre students, the better prepared they are to
create and produce compelling and imaginative
theatre. We take great pride in mentoring our
students. Faculty meet with students on an ongoing
basis to review class work, discuss progress, advise
on projects, and guide artistic growth.
COMMITMENT
TO EQUITY
The Theatre Arts Department faculty and staff pledge
to develop and implement recruitment strategies,
curriculum, pedagogy, and theatre production
practices that are anti-racist, anti-sexist, gender, body,
ability, national origin, and LGBTQIA+ inclusive. The
Department is committed to creating a culture and
curriculum that are ethical and equitable. Systemic
discrimination and oppression exist in society, including
in the professional theatre; therefore, academic
institutions like ours must work diligently to dismantle
and reform those systems. The Theatre Arts faculty
and staff will engage and collaborate with students
in teaching, service, and scholarship that challenges
racism, sexism, and all forms of bias and oppression,
while also empowering all of us to work to eradicate
these structures. We endeavor to hold our faculty, staff,
and students accountable to this ongoing work on equity
now and into the future.
BFA in MUSICAL THEATRE (Audition Required)
BFA IN
ACTING
(Audition Required)
The BFA in Acting is an intensive acting program that
prepares students for professional careers, and offers
education and training in contemporary realistic acting,
as well as in a variety of genres and styles from across the
globe, Shakespeare, and acting for film and digital media.
The BFA in Musical Theatre is a rigorous program
combining training in acting, singing, and dancing
with a robust liberal arts education. Our curriculum
prepares our students for successful professional
careers in the musical theatre industry while also
giving them the education to be global citizens and
contributors to society.
Acting, singing, and dancing are at the center of
our musical theatre curriculum. Our students take
acting classes dedicated to spoken word and singing
alongside daily dance (four full years of dance, five days
a week) and a weekly private voice lesson. Additional
program requirements include Music Fundamentals,
Musical Theatre History, Voice and Speech, and
Professional Preparation: Musical Theatre.
Performance opportunities include three musicals
per year in either The Theresa Lang Theatre or at offcampus
venues, with partners including The National
Dance Institute and The York Theatre Company. In
addition, we offer elective performance classes in
Cabaret Performance and Rock/Pop Performance
as well as a variety of master classes and lectures
with leaders in our industry. Past guests include Rob
Berman, Jason Gotay, Betty Buckley, Jeff Calhoun,
Adam Guettel, Marc Kudisch, Norm Lewis, Donna
McKechnie, Lonny Price, Hal Prince, Chita Rivera,
Stephen Sondheim, Tommy Tune, and Frank Wildhorn.
The curriculum prepares students for professional
careers with courses such as Professional Preparation:
Musical Theatre and Song Portfolio, as well as showcase
opportunities with agents, managers, and casting
directors in New York and Los Angeles.
Our faculty roster includes a large and diverse group of
working professionals and academics representing the
finest New York City has to offer.
Our BFA in Acting major is an atypical 60-credit
program. Most conservatory-style BFA programs require
90-credits in theatre and cannot offer the integrated
liberal arts education that Marymount Manhattan
College provides — this curriculum prepares students for
the wide range of drama and life experience presented in
the professional world of acting in theatre, film, television,
and digital media. BFA in Acting majors are exposed
to a wide variety of writers and acting styles, and the
curriculum prepares them for professional careers with
courses such as Professional Preparation: The Business
of Acting, and showcase opportunities with agents,
managers, and casting directors in New York and Los
Angeles, while also educating students to be responsible
global citizens and contributors to society.
The acting, voice and speech, and movement faculty
in the BFA in Acting is comprised of a diverse group of
theatre professionals that represents the finest New York
City has to offer.
Beginning in the spring semester of the first year, BFA
in Acting students audition for main stage and studio
productions that are produced in the Theresa Lang
Theatre or off-campus at a professional venue, and
student directing projects and advanced playwriting
projects produced in the J. William Bordeau Box Theatre.
BFA IN THEATRE
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
(Interview required)
The BFA in Theatre Design and Technology major
offers students the opportunity to study with New York
design and theatre professionals, design mainstage
productions, establish professional contacts, and
obtain internships with some of New York’s influential
theatre designers and theatres, while completing
the 60-credit BFA course of study. This exciting BFA
program combines the study of theatre design with
a robust liberal arts education. Students study one
or more areas of theatre design: Scenic, Lighting,
Costumes, Sound, Theatrical Media, or Technical
Production. Students work on premieres of new
works, contemporary and period plays, and film/video
projects, as well as musicals and dance concerts in
the Theresa Lang Theatre and the J. William Bordeau
Box Theatre. Our curriculum prepares students for
successful professional careers in theatre design and
technology while also offering the education needed
to be global citizens and contributors to society.
Our faculty is composed of professional designers
with careers designing on and off Broadway, in
regional theatre, and in film and television. Students
often have the opportunity to learn from visiting
guest speakers, including Tony Award winners Tony
Walton and William Ivey Long, as well as Broadway
lighting designer Steven Louis Shelley. In addition,
our students have had the opportunity to work with
guest faculty in design, which includes a diverse
group of working professionals representing
the finest New York has to offer. Since MMC is
an undergraduate college, design students do
not compete with graduate students for design
opportunities. Our small class sizes allow students to
interact closely with the instructor and their peers.
BFA IN STAGE & PRODUCTION
MANAGEMENT
(Interview required)
BA IN THEATRE ARTS
With its four concentrations, the 42-credit BA in
Theatre Arts offers students opportunities to study with
theatre professionals, work on main stage productions
or video/film projects, establish professional contacts,
and obtain internships with New York City’s major
theatres and professional organizations.
Directing (Audition and Interview Required)
Our student directors discover their artistic voices
through learning to analyze texts, making conceptual
choices and guiding actors in the rehearsal process,
as well as directing one-act plays and assisting faculty
and guest directors on the mainstage.
Theatre History and
Performance Texts
(Online Application Required)
Students explore many aspects of theatre studies
including dramatic literature, theatre history,
performance dramaturgy, and criticism. Elective
courses span a variety of fields, including
art history and film studies. This concentration
is particularly beneficial to students interested
in careers in literary management, dramaturgy,
education, journalism, historical research, and
directing.
Theatre and New Media
(Online Application Required)
Students interested in video, music, the web, social
media, writing, theatre, and performance will explore
emerging media technologies and learn to work across
media platforms to create their own content and modes
of expression. Internships, field trips, and projects with
innovative companies in the field connect students to
the digital arts scene in New York City.
Writing for the Stage
(Interview Required)
Students develop individual voices and writing
techniques through classwork and collaboration with
actors and directors to present their work in staged
readings and productions. Electives in creative writing
and screenplay, television, and webisode writing
help students to expand their abilities. An internship
in literary management places students in literary
offices and script departments of New York theatre
companies that match their interests.
In this 60-credit major, you call the shots and
watch your creative eye come to life in the heart of
New York City. As a stage or production manager,
you’ll blend critical logistics with artistic vision and
collaborate with production teams from first rehearsal
to closing curtain. Our program emphasizes the
interconnectivity between management, leadership,
and the technical aspects of theatre arts to bring
stories to life on stage. This program combines
classroom and practical applications within a
robust liberal arts education, preparing students for
successful professional careers while offering the
education needed to be global citizens.
Stage and Production Management students develop
management, organizational, technical, and cuecalling
skills that support a variety of production
styles and settings while working on College and
professional productions. They build communication
and collaboration skills needed to become a successful
member of creative and production teams, and develop
the ability to discuss and problem solve physical and
technical production needs, including using nontraditional
research skills.
Students have the opportunity to stage manage
mainstage, studio, and off-site productions, studying
with New York theatre professionals. They establish
professional contacts with AEA Stage Managers,
especially through internships with some of New York’s
best theatres. Students learn to use New York City as
their campus. Whether attending productions on or
off-Broadway, in venues downtown or in Brooklyn,
or traveling to an off-campus internship, students
experience all that the city has to offer.
“If you want to survive in this business, you have to
be open and adaptable to an array of working styles.
The college faculty is so talented and diverse, that I
was prepared for whatever was thrown at me during
professional auditions. In my classes, one day I was
doing Chekhov and Shakespeare scenes and the next
day, it was Carousel! Marymount is a place where you
don’t have to be the same. It’s OK if you march to the
beat of a different drummer. You don’t have to conform
or be linked with one particular group. I was able to be an
independent thinker at MMC and really do my own thing.”
“I moved to New York wanting to be
an actor. MMC helped me realize that
there were other careers in the theater.
If not for the flexibility of MMC’s liberal
arts programs, I would not have been
able to make the transition from in
front of to behind the curtain so easily
or fruitfully.”
To schedule a Theatre Arts audition or interview,
please visit our website at www.mmm.edu and begin
your application to the College. Once a completed
application has been submitted, you will gain access
to your Admissions Portal, where you will be able to
schedule the type of audition or interview you prefer.
Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will offer
three options for auditions or interviews for Spring and
Fall 2022:
1) In-person auditions or interviews conducted on
the MMC campus at 221 East 71st Street.
2) Live virtual auditions or interviews conducted
online through Acceptd - AuditionRoom.
3) Digital audition or interview materials submitted
through the MMC Admissions Portal.
Please check the Theatre Arts webpage at
www.mmm.edu/theatre where updated information
and specific guidelines will be posted regarding each
option for auditions and interviews, and instructions
to schedule the option that is best for you.
For the BFA in Acting, the In-person Audition or the
Live Virtual Audition consists of one contemporary
monologue (from a full-length play) no more than
two minutes in length.
For the BFA in Musical Theatre, the In-person
Audition or the Live Virtual Audition consists of one
contemporary monologue (from a full-length play) no
more than two minutes in length. In addition, please
prepare two contrasting 16-32 bar cuts (one song
should be written prior to 1970 and one should be
written after 1970). Sheet music is required for Inperson
Auditions, and pre-recorded accompaniment
is required for both Live Virtual and Digital auditions.
Only In-person and Live Virtual Auditions will hold a
brief dance call for placement purposes. Prospective
students auditioning for the BFA in Musical Theatre
program are automatically considered for the BFA in
Acting program at the time of their audition.
For the BFA in Theatrical Design and Technology or the
BFA in Stage and Production Management, students
participating in either the In-person Interview or the
Live Virtual Interview will be asked to share a portfolio
of their work with the faculty interviewer. This portfolio
serves as a starting point for a conversation about
theatre and your interests with the faculty conducting
the interview. Portfolios may include designs, sketches,
photographs, renderings, prompt books, or anything
that you feel comfortable sharing about your work.
For BA in Theatre Arts major with concentrations
in Directing or Writing for the Stage, students
participating in either the In-person Interview or the
Live Virtual Interview will be asked to share a portfolio
of their work with the faculty interviewer. This portfolio
serves as a starting point for a conversation about
theatre and your interests with the faculty conducting
the interview. Portfolios may include prompt books,
research, scripts, plays, creative writing, or anything
else that you feel comfortable sharing about your
work. Prospective students applying for Directing must
also present an acting audition that consists of one
contemporary monologue (from a full-length play) no
more than two minutes in length.
For the Theatre History and Performance Texts
or Theatre and New Media concentrations in the
BA Theatre Arts major, students applying to these
concentrations must complete an online application for
consideration and acceptance. The online application
is available on the MMC Admissions Portal.
