Scenic route
Another way of discovering La Garrotxa is to see it
from a bird’s-eye view. La Garrotxa has a whole
host of natural vantage points offering a privileged
view of the district. Take the healthy route and
walk up to it along the different signposted paths!
If you are travelling from north to south, the first summit
to offer panoramic views of La Garrotxa is that of La
Mare de Déu del Mont. 1 Located in an area that left
its mark on the poet Jacint Verdaguer, it offers an
exceptional view of a large part of the region.
Slightly further south-west you can climb the Guilar 2
mountain in Argelaguer, from where you will have
great views of the Llierca valley, and the church in
Castellfollit de la Roca 3 offers a spectacular,
different and unique outline of this small municipality.

A little further south, near the village of Montagut, is
the shrine of La Mare de Déu del Cós, 4 a fantastic
vantage point of the middle course of the Fluvià river,
from the Puigsacalm until the Empordà plains on the
horizon.

In Olot, you can climb the Montsacopa volcano. 5 It
is located in the city centre, and its crater offers
different views of the city and its surrounding countryside.
One of the areas you will see is Batet de la
Serra, 6 a basalt plateau located half-way between
Olot, Santa Pau and the Fageda d’en Jordà beech
forest, which is also well worth a climb to admire the
La Garrotxa countryside and the Pyrenees mountains.
Continuing south, you can climb Puig Rodó, 7 the
perfect lookout over the plain of Les Preses and the
En Bas valley, Alta Garrotxa, the easternmost
summits of the Pyrenees and, weather permitting,
Cap de Creus and the gulf of Roses. The access road
is closed on Mondays.
The vantage points at the shrine of La Salut 8 , with
great views of the Hostoles valley, and Sant Miquel
de Castelló and Fontanills in the En Bas valley, for an
ideal view of the valley, are worth a visit in the
southernmost part of La Garrotxa.
To the south-east of the district is Santa Maria de
Finestres, 9 the highest peak of the mountain range
of the same name, well worth climbing for a view of a
large part of the district.
