Why the Grand Tour? 

Switzerland is a country with an infallible 

public transport system so why travel by 

car, I asked myself? The answer became 

apparent within the first few miles… 


“While my route incorporated popular 

tourist destinations such as Montreux – 

Interlaken – Lucerne, I could not help 

but get excited about new, unfamiliar 

sights along the way: Gland, a small 

village above Lake Geneva, stunning views 

of soft rolling mountain pastures in the 

Gruyeres – Pays-d’Enhaut region, a pit 

stop at a small local bar/restaurant in 

Beatenberg overlooking Lake Thun, a car 

ferry from Gersau to Beckenried across 

Lake Lucerne. These were all a revelation 

to an avid public transport user such as 

myself. Armed with my Grand Tour map 

and guidebook and helped by the many 

Grand Tour signposts along the way, it was 

much easier than anticipated. A Grand Tour 

by electric car is now the next challenge 

on my ‘Switzerland bucket list’!”

DAVOS – LUGANO (CA. 290 KM) 

Today’s journey takes you to Lugano 

in the south of Switzerland, where 

you have several opportunities to 

experience the Grand Tour attractions. 

We recommend a stroll around the 

historical old-town and an excursion to 

San Salvatore or Monte Brè. Overnight 

in Lugano. 

DAY 5 

LUGANO – ZERMATT (CA. 215 KM) 

Leaving Lugano for Zermatt. On your 

way lies Ascona. Continue your journey 

and arrive in the region Valais. Here lies 

the Aletsch Glacier. Continue moving 

down to Täsch which is your last stop 

by car before you continue by train on 

to Zermatt. Overnight in Zermatt. 

DAY 6 

ZERMATT – MONTREUX 

(CA. 150 KM) 

A morning trip up the exhilarating 

open-air Gornergrat railway is not to 

be missed. Back in Täsch your route 

begins with a stunning drive 

up through the Valais, heading 

through Sierre, Sion, Martigny and 

Aigle. Continue along the shores of 

Lake Geneva to Montreux. Overnight 

in Montreux. 

DAY 7 

MONTREUX – GSTAAD (CA. 330 KM) 

Drive through the orchards and 

terraced vineyards of the Lavaux to 

Lausanne and from here continue 

your drive to Freiburg. Further on your 

way you will pass the Greyerzer region, 

with its rolling green landscape. 

Overnight in Gstaad. 

DAY 8 

GSTAAD – LUCERNE (CA. 315 KM) 

Continue your drive to Interlaken. 

From Interlaken you can experience

courtyard, hall or room unveils a part

Montreux and explore the Old Town. 

Adjacent to the steep slopes at the 

edge of the forest, but just 10 minutes 

for the lakeside, amazing views,

The charming wine-growing village 

of Chexbres is only a short train 

ride from Montreux. A pleasant walk 

from the station will lead you to the 

family-owned estate Domaine Bovy,

region Lavaux. Wine lovers will love 

the cellars with large oak barrels,

Reichenbach falls and its meringue. 

From here take the train to avoid the 

steepest climb over the Brünig pass.

Follow the shores of Lake Sarnen 

towards Mount Pilatus, Lucerne’s

Faulhornweg, the ridge walk with 

birds-eye views of Lake Brienz 

and past the most idyllic lake in the 

Alps – Bachalpsee offers breathtaking

EIGER TRAIL 

The Eiger North Wall is close enough 

to touch from the Eiger Trail and 

the various climbing routes to the 

notorious Eiger summit are easy to 

spot from the trail. The 6km trail – 

in parts quite steep – leads from 

Grindelwald Eigergletscher to Alpiglen. 

DAY 6 

MÄNNLICHEN AND GRINDELWALD 

The starting point is the restaurant on 

Männlichen. The 3h trail will lead you 

over open pastures, past alpine huts, 

down below the tree line to the spring 

pastures just above Grindelwald.

Village via Vevey. We will visit Domaine

Vendanges” (Grape Harvest Festival)

single mattresses/ two duvet covers). Also, 

many double / twin rooms only take a 

maximum of one extra bed for children. 

ROOM CHECK-IN 

& CHECK-OUT 

Check-in times are usually between 2pm 

and 3pm whilst check-out can be from 11am 

to 12pm on the day of departure. If you 

have a later flight the hotel will in 

most cases agree to hold your luggage for 

a few hours after check-out. A later checkout 

or use of a day room (at additional 

charge) may also be an option and can be 

arranged locally. 

SINGLE ROOM 

Although supplements are payable for single 

accommodation, it should be noted that the 

standard size and location of single rooms 

are not always as good as a twin/double 

room (even if the twin/double room 

is booked for single occupancy). 

GUEST CARDS 

Some cities and towns in Switzerland 

provide guest cards for local transport and 

other discounts to guests staying overnight 

at a hotel. This can be a very convenient and 

cost-effective way of exploring a local area 

on public transport. Guest Cards are always 

issued by the hotel. 

DRIVING IN SWITZERLAND 

The roads in Switzerland are well developed 

and easily accessible. A motorway vignette 

is required when driving your own car 

in Switzerland. This can be purchased 

beforehand through us. 

Car Rental companies based in Switzerland 

include vignettes in their rental prices. If you 

are taking a rental car into Switzerland from 

France, Germany, Italy or Austria you will 

have to buy a vignette at the border. Expect 

queues in high season. 

INTERNATIONAL RAIL 

All our packages can also be combined 

with train travel by Eurostar from the UK via 

Paris or Brussels to Switzerland and from 

neighbouring countries Germany, France, 

Italy and Austria into Switzerland. We offer 

Interrail and Eurail tickets as well as pointto-point 

tickets on DB, Trenitalia, TGV Lyria 

services, SNCF, Italo / NTV and many more.
