St Andrew’s finally crack Gillette Cup competition • By Gordon Findlater FOR ST Andrew’s College first XI coach Mike Johnston, 18 years of coming agonisingly close was worth the wait when his side qualified for the Gillette Cup for the first time. When St Andrew’s defeated Christ’s College by 186 runs in the Gillette Cup Canterbury regional qualifying final at Mainpower Oval in Rangiora they created history. St Andrew’s have never qualified for the national tournament, which has been the Mike Johnston pinnacle of secondary school cricket since it was established in 1990. “It’s taken a long time. I’ve been to a lot of finals before, but to finally crack it is awesome,” said Johnston. The final against Christ’s was the sixth Johnston has been involved in while coaching the team. Many have gone right down to the wire and one of the most heart-breaking losses even resulted in a draw. That loss came in 2008 when the St Andrew’s team, containing Black Cap Henry Nicholls, Wellington allrounder Logan van Beek and Auckland pace bowler Matt McEwan, lost in a bowl off to St Bede’s College which featured Matt Henry. The Gillette Cup tournament will take place at Lincoln University and Hagley Oval from December 1-6. St Andrew’s will play the winners of the regional qualifying tournaments in Otago, Central Districts, Wellington, Auckland and Northern Districts. “Now we’ve got there our aim is to perform really well and hopefully we can win it because we’ve got a very well balanced side,” said Johnston. •More sport, page 13 SARAH LAWRENCE will perform at the famous London Globe Theatre next year with the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company. The Rangi Ruru year 13 student is one of four Christchurch students who has been selected as a member of the young Shakespeare company. Cashmere High School’s Jorja Farrant and Michael Higgs, as well as Catholic Cathedral’s Lucy Sparks, will be among the 24 secondary school students to head to the United Kingdom next year. The students will attend workshops at Shakespeares’ Globe in London, have question and answer sessions with actors and directors, and go on behind-thescenes tours of the globe in their two weeks in London. Sarah and the other young actors will watch professional performances and attend rehearsals with a globe director, before performing scenes from one of Shakespeare’s plays on the globe stage in front of an audience. They will also spend a week in Stratford-upon-Avon, the village where Shakespeare was born. Said Sarah of working in the production: “The experience of playing Lady Macbeth in the Pipitea Marae on the Wellington waterfront then again in the Legislative Council Chamber in Parliament was unforgettable.” Sarah will travel to London in July and is planning to study law and arts at Victoria University for the first half of the year before she leaves.
