6 Tuesday November 19 2019 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz November 2019 WESTERN NEWS Commitment, Achievement, Resilience, Respect Time to celebrate the year’s successes Achievements recognised On Monday November 4, Hornby High School celebrated a wonderful evening, acknowledging student achievement. Mrs Kaye Banks a former student herself, gave a wonderful speech on the achievements of Hornby High School in the last 12 months. Kaye is the current Board of Trustees Chairperson. The Head Girl and Boy – Shardey Harris and Lachlan Hickford – respectively, delivered speeches that would have inspired every student in the auditorium for the rest of their school years. The passion in the Principal’s address from Mr Robin Sutton was a clear indication of why Hornby High School is going from strength to strength. Well done all award winners. Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo e lelei. Bula. Fakaalofa atu. Namaste. Kumusta. Haere mai haere mai ki Te Kura Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka. Warm greetings to the Hornby High School community. I love term 4. It’s a time of celebration of so much that is great in any kura, and Hornby High School is no exception. Our senior prize giving showcases the extraordinary range of achievement that our students produce, whether it be in academic or cultural work, or the sporting, leadership, or community spheres. Our delight at the announcement of the Dux of the school, or the winner of the Hornby Rotary Creative Excellence Award, are particularly special moments. This year our joy was multiplied many fold with the announcement of a special flight scholarship for Year 11 student Anaru, and the standing ovation he received from students was enough to melt the heart. When I joined the school in 2016 I introduced what I hoped might become a long-lasting tradition to celebrate one particular type of achievement. We have those students who achieve their NCEA qualification, endorsed with Excellence, before they even enter the examination room for external examinations in November. This is not easy to achieve. The “tradition” is a special morning tea with the Principal. In 2016 there were two students who achieved this feat. This year, 2019, I have taken 13 students out to morning tea. This is an outstanding improvement. I notice increasing achievement at the Merit and Excellence levels in NCEA across all three levels, and across all ethnic and gender groups that make up our school community. These things speak to me not only of improving achievement, but also higher, deeper, aspiration amongst our rangatahi. Ka mau te wehi!! Let’s also not forget the achievement of so many others that lay behind those results. We are all different, our capabilities, the things that allow us to be the magic that we are, may not fit neatly into award categories, and it is the capacity of Hornby High School to nurture these special talents that gives depth to our community. It builds and supports the manaaki that IS our kura. In this last column for the year, I’d like to pay special tribute to the wonderful colleagues it is my privilege to work with. Their dedication to and aroha for our tamariki is outstanding. It has been an extraordinary year, and in fact three years, with the planning and final completion of our full school rebuild, and I am grateful to our whole staff team for keeping the focus clearly on the wellbeing of our rangatahi and their achievement throughout these difficult and disruptive times. Ngā mihi nui Robin Sutton Tumuaki Every Wednesday, a small group of Year 7 and 8 students visits the Hornby Elderly Daycare Centre. They take things to share and enjoy a morning tea together. The students comment that it is great being able to learn what life and school was like for the elderly when they were their age. The Community Impact Projects (CIP) are curriculum innovation projects run with Year 7 and 8 students, designed to give their learning real-world contexts, and provide opportunities for students to make a real change in their communities. “The students’ engagement with their learning is amazing; so wonderful to see,” Principal Robin Sutton says, noting that developing an attitude of kindness has been one of his key messages to students over these past two years. These students have achieved NCEA endorsed with Excellence before even entering the examinations room for external assessments. This requires a huge amount of commitment and hard work, and these students are targeting similar grades in their external examinations. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER PLANS TO open a mural dedicated to remembering the significant role Hornby played in the 1974 British Commonwealth Games will be delayed. The Greater Hornby Residents’ Association was initially planning to unveil a mural and a memorial plaque honouring Stanley David Denton this summer. But the two projects planned to brighten up Denton Park will likely be delayed by a year due to further work needing to be completed on the artist design briefs. Chairman Marc Duff said it is expected for the projects will not be complete until next summer. “It is better off to do both projects once and to do them right as they are going to be there for a long time,” he said. A design brief is expected to go out early next year. Both projects are estimated to cost in total between $20,000- $25,000 and the association is looking at various ways to fundraise from applying for grants to running events. Since late last year, the association has been looking to paint a mural on the front of the Denton Park Velodrome. The 1974 British Commonwealth Games logo is the main artistic design being considered for the mural. This is due to Denton Park being built in 1970 for the games with the Denton Park Velodrome being one of the last Commonwealth buildings standing that was used. Mr Duff said different sports clubs lease and own parts of the Denton Park Velodrome and it was important the association worked with them to get the design of the mural right. The memorial plaque to honour Mr Denton, who donated to Denton Park in 1952 is planned to be placed in front of the velodrome. Mr Duff said he hoped an artist will be working on the mural by the beginning of next summer. A COMPLETE revamp is planned for the Annandale Park playground in Ilam. The city council has also proposed moving the playground closer to the path to improve access and limit noise heard at nearby houses. All existing trees will remain in the park. A new sealed path is proposed, along with a picnic table, plants and more trees to make the area more inviting for families and picnics. Members of the public can submit on a series of proposed pieces for the playground, including swings, a mulberry bush carousel, which has multiple FUN: A swing set planned for Ilam’s Annandale Park playground. Park revamp views sought levels so children of all ages can play safely, a slide and rockers. Once the consultation closes on the playground, the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board will make a final decision of the improvements in February.
