Fears for elderly pedestrian
safety on busy Spreydon road
• By Matt Slaughter
THE SPEED limit on a busy
Spreydon road will not be
decreased in spite of it being
dangerous for elderly residents to
cross.
Athelstan St resident Sally
Stanley says before she started
using a walking frame it was
difficult to cross her street, but
now cars stop for her.
The only protection for pedestrians
who cross the road at the
end that Ms Stanley lives at is a
traffic island.
She said cars sometimes
drive too fast along this street,
which one of Barrington Mall’s
exits is on, and this is putting
her fellow elderly neighbours in
danger.
“Man alive, do they [motorists]
put their foot down.
“I’m a local and I’ve been here
all my life. That road was never
made for the traffic it gets.
“We have trouble getting
across.”
City council staff have
declined a request in a letter
to the Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board signed by six
of Ms Stanley’s neighbours for
the speed limit along Athelstan
St to be reduced from 50km/h to
30km/h.
Meeting to address Hoon Hay crime
• By Matt Slaughter
CRIME AND safety concerns in
Hoon Hay will be discussed at a
community meeting.
Hoon Hay Community
Association chairman Alastair
Berney, said he has seen
residents
reporting
more crime,
particularly
car break-ins
recently.
Senior
Sergeant Roy
Roy Appley
Appley said
he is not
sure which
crimes have happened most
often in Hoon Hay, but thefts
from vehicles, burglaries,
neighbourhood disputes and
anti-social driving (boy racing)
have been happening the most
frequently across Christchurch.
Concerned residents, police
and neighbourhood support
representatives have been invited
to attend the meeting, organised
by Wigram MP Megan Woods.
It has been scheduled for
Thursday at 6pm at the Hoon
Hay Community Centre.
Senior Sergeant Appley, who
will be at the meeting said the
level of crime reported in Hoon
Hay recently does not indicate
‘There are pockets where
I think the crime rate has
gone up a wee bit’
– Alastair Berney
it has increased. However, he
said it is important to meet with
the community to encourage
people to report crime to give
police a more accurate picture
of this.
“Not reporting crime for me,
is actually good because it keeps
crime down, but it’s bad in the
respect of we don’t actually know
what the true picture is so we
can’t commit more resourcing to
an area if we don’t know,” said
Senior Sergeant Appley.
Said Mr Berney: “There are
pockets where I think the crime
rate has gone up a wee bit,” said
Mr Berney.
Senior Sergeant Appley said
the ideal outcome of the meeting
for police would be “that they
[residents] get reassured as to
what the police are doing in their
CONCERNS:
Residents
are reporting
more car
break-ins to
police.
area, secondly that we actually
discover everything that we
need to know about that area
and thirdly, that we might go
on to look for solutions that will
resolve the issues raised, which
also might include community
solutions, not just police
solutions.”
Street compared to highway
• From page 1
The letter said the street is near
Barrington Mall, Barrington
Medical Centre, bus stops, taxi
stands and a lawyer’s office and is
very busy and stressful for some
older people to cross. These concerns
were raised with the board
in June.
The board requested city council
staff consider reducing the
speed limit along the street and
other traffic calming measures.
City council staff have reported
back to the board saying this is
not necessary.
Said the report from staff:
“2016 surveys indicate that the
average daily traffic flow for
Athelstan St 3921 vehicles per
day, with vehicles’ speed averaging
40km/h. An additional speed
survey on August 19 2019 showed
the average speed was 42km/h.
• HAVE YOUR
the speed limit
along Athelstan
St should be
reduced to
30km/h? Email
matt.slaughter@
This would see Athelstan St rated
as low risk according to New Zealand
Transport Authority’s Speed
management guideline, it said.
“Of the three crashes on the
street in the last five years none
have involved pedestrians. Staff
have concluded that the safe and
appropriate speed for this street is
50km/h.
“Staff note that the constant
relatively high volumes of traffic
faced by local pedestrians would
not be affected by a reduced speed
limit. Staff noted also that traffic
calming measures are currently
not funded in the council’s Long
Term Plan.”
Ms Stanley is unhappy with
this decision.
“I just think it is disappointing.
She compared Athelstan St to
“a busy highway” at peak times of
the day.
Stolen artwork replaced in Halswell Quarry
ART: A new
artwork from
Adelaide
has been
unveiled in
Halswell
Quarry to
replace
another
piece that
was stolen.
A SCULPTURE stolen from
Halswell Quarry has been
replaced by a new one from
Adelaide.
The piece called Kaurna Wailyu
(Kaurna Leaves) which was
created by South Australian artist
Karen Genoff, Kaurna Wailyu
replaces another one of her
works, 2002 bronze sculpture,
The Spheres.
The work went missing in
April 2015, with only the stone
plinths left standing.
A weathering steel leaf and tree
and grit-etched Adelaide Hills
granite artwork now sits in the
same spot at the entrance to the
Adelaide Garden.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel said
Kaurna Wailyu underlines the
similarities between the cities.
“We both recognise the importance
of the arts in the life and the
vitality of a liveable city,” she said.
“Both cities foster creativity
and innovation, and wonderful
works of art can prove uplifting
even in difficult times.
Representatives from Halswell
School performed waiata at the
unveiling ceremony, which was
also attended by Ngāi Tūāhuriri
representative Aroha Reriti-Crofts.
“Our sister city has always
reached out to us and continues
to provide support, with this
wonderful new work further
cementing our 47-year partnership,”
said Ms Dalziel.
The city council’s Christchurch-Adelaide
Sister City Committee
has commissioned the
artwork, with support from the
city of Adelaide.
Adelaide’s Lord Mayor Sandy
Verschoor said the work includes
indigenous elements in its design,
“an important reference to
Adelaide’s Kaurna history and
community,” she said.
“The City of Adelaide is proud
to present this artwork to the
people of Christchurch as an
enduring symbol of our special
relationship,” Lord Mayor Verschoor
said.
Committee chairman Dr Peter
Cottrell said it has been wonderful
to see all the committee’s
hard work come to fruition with
the delivery of Kaurna Wailyu.
“The artwork is the culmination
of more than four years
of interaction between Karen
Genoff in Adelaide and a large
group of people in Christchurch,
centred on the Sister City Committee,”
he said.
Ms Genoff said she “was
happy to create the sculpture for
Christchurch and to do my part as
an artist to work towards healing.”
“I thank Kaurna elder uncle
Lewis O’Brien for his stories and
the language which brings the
work to life,” she says. “It’s been a
privilege to represent my city to
create this work, she said.”
Feedback sought on Linwood bus hub
• By Matt Slaughter
OPTIONS BEING considered
to improve the public transport
hub on Buckleys Rd in Linwood
could make it safer and more
appealing.
Said Norwich St resident Neale
Tomlinson, whose house is near
the hub: “Where the bus stops
are now, which is over our fence,
there is a bit of a problem, it’s
not as bad as it used to be, but
it is a bit of a problem with the
bus stops getting smashed really
quite regularly and rubbish and
what have you.”
The city council has reported
the bus shelters on Buckleys Rd are
small and inadequate for the about
1400 passengers who use them a
day. It says getting across Buckleys
Rd is also difficult for passengers
because of the high volume of traffic
that uses the road.
It says some of the 480 buses
that use the Buckleys Rd stops
each day block people’s driveways.
The city council is asking for
feedback on possible options to
upgrade the bus hub and reduce
these issues.
It is proposing two potential
options. The first option is to
cul-de-sac Norwich St. It says
this will allow the bus stops to
be grouped together and more
space to be created for bus passengers
waiting.
PLEASED: Norwich St resident Neale Tomlinson supports the
city council’s proposal to improve the public transport hub on
Buckleys Rd, Linwood.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
This option will mean buses
will no longer stop across driveways
but it will stop vehicles
travelling between Norwich St
and Buckleys Rd.
Mr Tomlinson supports the
first option and said it could also
reduce vandalism of the bus stops
because the area they would be
moved to is not hit with damage
and graffiti as often.
He said grouping the bus stops
together could mean if they are
vandalised, the area to clean up
would be much smaller.
Said city council transport
planning and delivery manager
Lynette Ellis: “With the cul-desac
option there is space for some
form of seating, trees, a grass
bank, a drinking fountain and a
paved play area.”
The second option is to retain
a left turn from Norwich St onto
Buckleys Rd. This option would
split the bus stops but enable limited
access to be retained between
Norwich St and Buckleys Rd.
“With the left-turn option
there is space for some planting
UPGRADE: The city council is asking people for feedback on
their prefered option to improve the bus hub next to Eastgate
Shopping Centre in Linwood.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
and a seat or a drinking fountain,’’
said Ms Ellis.
“We want to build better bus
shelters so waiting passengers
have more protection from the
weather and we want to install
a signalised pedestrian crossing
so that people can get across the
road more easily.
“We also want to move the bus
stops to the end of Norwich St so
we reduce the likelihood of people’s
driveways being blocked,’’
she said.
People have until December
2 to share their views on which
of the two options they prefer
at https://www.ccc.govt.nz/
Students win enterprise awards
• By Matt Slaughter
CASHMERE HIGH School
students have won three regional
titles for their business as part of
the Young Enterprise Scheme.
The group made up of year 13
students Josh Dalley, Luisa Birkenhake,
Wayo Whyte and Riley
Flanagan have invented and
brought to market their product
called Pivot.
This is the world’s first instant
ice strapping tape. It is strapping
tape that goes ice-cold with the
addition of water.
The team have been recently
recognised by winning one of
two regional spots to compete
for Young Enterprise Scheme’s
Company of the Year award
in Wellington on December 4.
Winning this award would mean
Pivot would gain great exposure,
said its chief executive Josh Dalley.
Pivot also won the regional
excellence award for innovation
and the regional award for enterprising
technology.
Josh said winning these awards
made all of the hard work that
went into designing the product
pay off.
“It was absolutely fantastic, a
real honour, to be honest. I suppose
it’s when you work really
hard at something for a whole
year and it’s in a big group of
people, every once in a while a
fire sort of gets lit and we feed off
each other and we managed to
do something really amazing.”
He said the team hopes to
keep growing the Pivot brand
and some of its members are
planning to study business at
university, while others will
study engineering.
“We’re looking to move on and
expand and get a real manufacturer
on board hopefully and
we’ve got some big sales channels
and opportunities with some
celebrities actually for endorsement,
said Josh.
“We’re looking to go into the
medical industry, not just the
sporting industry.”
In 2018 there were over
250,000 sports-related ACC injury
claims. The top five injuries
were different types of sprains
which could have been treated
with the Pivot tape, said Josh.
placing
• By Matt Slaughter
A TEAM of Hillmorton High
School students have come
second at Christchurch’s
Middle School Ethics
Olympiad competition.
Two teams of five Year 7, 8
and 9 students competed at the
event, which saw 18 teams from
12 schools go head to head to
present arguments and answer
questions on contentious ethical
cases on November 13.
They had to answer questions
about an ethical case involving
giving to charities and the effectiveness
of charities. They then
respond to arguments about
parents using tracking apps to
monitor children.
Hillmorton High School head
of English Andrea Hotter said
the students had been preparing
for the competition for about
three months and were not
expecting to come second.
“I think, to be honest, they
were quite surprised at how well
they obviously did and I think
the points were quite close across
a number of the teams, she said.
“We’re very proud of them.”
Eco-friendly transport use on the rise
PEOPLE ARE using their cars less
and walking, biking or scooting
more, a survey has found.
The life in Christchurch
transport survey findings show
while travel by car is still the
most popular mode of transport
in the city, there has been an
increase in the use of alternative
ways to get around.
The survey questioned about
3500 Christchurch residents
about their travel habits and the
city’s transport network.
Said city council monitoring
and research team leader Kath
Jamieson: “The proportion of
people who say they are using
their car less now compared to
12 months ago is 27 per cent –
up from 19 per cent in 2018.”
More than 40 per cent of
respondents said they cycle more
often now than they did a year
ago while 21 per cent say they
walk more often.
Ms Jamieson said the arrival
of electric scooters in Christchurch
has also impacted the way
people move around the city.
“Nineteen per cent of
survey participants reported
that they have used a rental e-
scooter more than once a month
in the past 12 months, while
two per cent of those surveyed
said they own their own e-scooter
so it has become a popular
alternative form of transport,’’
ECO-FRIENDLY: The life in Christchurch transport survey has found more people are opting to
cycle, walk and scooter around the city.
Ms Jamieson said.
The number of people using
public transport has risen from
29 per cent in 2018, to 32 per
cent this year.
Ms Jamieson said the survey
showed the condition of roads
and footpaths are continuing to
trouble people.
“Fifty-one per cent of the people
surveyed said they were dissatisfied
or very dissatisfied with
the condition of Christchurch’s
roads. Ongoing patch repairs to
road, potholes and uneven road
surfaces are the main reasons
people gave for their dissatisfaction,’’
Ms Jamieson said.
The city council recently
revealed an investment case that
seeks $25-30 million funding to
improve the safety and condition
on more than 100 roads in
suburban areas of the city.
The areas proposed for
roading upgrades are New
Brighton, Richmond, Linwood,
Woolston, Spreydon, Somerfield,
Waltham, Beckenham and
Riccarton.
Estuary shellfish
collection signs
soon to go up
SIGNS STATING the daily limit
for shellfish collection in the Avon
Heathcote Estuary will soon be in
place.
Residents have been concerned
about groups or individuals taking
more than the recreational
limit of 150 per person as there are
currently no signs indicating the
rules.
However, Ministry for Primary
Industries director of fisheries
management Stuart Anderson said
signs will be put up in the estuary
in the next couple of months.
The impact of shellfish gathering
in the estuary on shellfish numbers,
birdlife, and human health
has been of growing concern for
its surrounding communities.
Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai
Trust chairman Kit Doudney
said a reduction to shellfish collection
limits in the estuary may
be the next step to improving its
health.
He will write to the Ministry for
Primary Industries to request the
daily recreational limit be lowered
from 150 to 25 per person.
It would take a minimum of one
year to lower the recreational daily
limits in the estuary, as the process
would include formal consultation
and the Government’s approval of
any changes.
Tough kids get wet and muddy
MORE THAN 5000 primary and
intermediate school pupils took
on mud pits, obstacles and tyre
runs as part of the annual MASH
Tough Kid challenge held in
South New Brighton last week.
The event first started following
earthquakes to encourage sports
participation and boost morale,
now it also helps reduce screen
time and improve mental health.
Schools from across Canterbury
got involved, with some
coming from as far as Hanmer
Springs and Windwhistle.
The 2.7km course included
waterslides, mud pits, inflatable
obstacles and tyre runs. It ran
through the forest and followed
the estuary, finishing in the
South new Brighton Domain.
Said event co-ordinator, Isaac
Sutherland: “It has been so exciting
to see the number of schools
getting involved with this event.
We have schools that have been
with us from the beginning,
schools who send the entire roll,
and new schools who have come
on board to sample what the
event has to offer.”
Said Cathedral Grammar
School teacher Kirsty Bond: “The
kids love getting out and getting
wet and muddy. The smiles on
their faces speak for themselves.”
Stedman eyes Tokyo Paralympic medals
DETERMINED: William Stedman wants medals in both track
and field at next year’s Tokyo Paralympics.
• By Jacob Page
HILLMORTON’S TRACK and
field star William Stedman is
eyeing medals in two disciplines
next year at the Tokyo
Paralympics.
The 19-year-old earned
bronze in the 400m T36 final
at the World Para Athletics
Championships in Dubai. He
also added a fifth place finish in
the long jump later the same day
which made him eager for double
delight in Japan.
“Next year, Tokyo 2020,
medals in the long jump and the
400m is the goal.”
The double Paralympic
bronze medallist from three
years ago in the 400m and
800m, who has cerebral palsy,
competed in the T36 100m,
400m and long jump.
He missed the final in the
100m but said he tried to
conserve energy in the heats of
his favoured 400m event.
“I went out for the first 200m
at my normal pace, just trying
to get out fast and practise for
tomorrow,” said Will.
“Then I had around 120m
to go and saw that I was ahead
so slowed down a bit, and then
slowed even more for the last
50m,” he said.
Stedman crossed the line in
54.28sec with the race won by
Australian James Turner, in a
new world record time
Stedman.
of 51.71sec. Silver went to
Evgenii Shvetsov of Russia in
53.18sec.
“It’s the second fastest time I’ve
ever run so I was pretty happy
with that,” he said.
“I didn’t quite run the first
200m quite as quick as I should
have, so that may have affected
the time slightly, but overall I
think I ran well and I’m really
SPORT
TEAM: Coach George Edwards with his main charge William
happy with the bronze medal.”
Stedman also competed in the
long jump T36 final.
He had a best jump of 5.39m
and finished fifth overall in the
competition.
Stedman has found success
with long-time coach George
Edwards who is a Canterbury
coach who he first met five years
ago.
Kirkwood Intermediate
Opportunities
At Kirkwood we are very proud of our children and their achievements.
Our pupils have many opportunities to participate in a wide range of education activities including Technology; ICT;
Music; Drama; Education Outside The Classroom; Leadership roles; Camps; Academic challenges; and Sports.
Our pupils develop a wide range of skills which helps them develop educationally, socially, emotionally and physically
during their time with us. Just a few of the opportunities our pupils have experienced this year are as follows:
Education Outside the Classroom
We visit many different places within our community such as Canterbury Museum,
Riccarton House and the Art Gallery. We also offer class camps for our Year 7 and
Year 8 pupils. This year our Year 7’s camped at Purau Bay where they experienced
canoeing, abseiling and camping skills, along with getting to know their class and
developing friendships.
Sport at Kirkwood Intermediate
We participate in a large variety of sports including: Netball, Football, Cross Country,
Skiing, Swimming, Rugby, Basketball, Waterpolo, Touch Rugby, Korf Ball, Table
Tennis, Badminton, Mountain Biking, Athletics and Gymnastics. We also compete in
the Canterbury Association of Intermediate and Middle Schooling competitions.
Our school is well known for the courtesy, co-operation and sportsmanship of our
teams and we value this highly.
Some of the highlights this year are as follows:
Tuesday Sport - Our A Football
team came second in their
competition.
Indoor Tournament - We took
two basketball teams, two Volleyball
teams and five Badminton teams.
Many of our pupils have been
selected to represent Canterbury
and/or have been selected for the
Nationals in various sports which
makes our school proud.
Wellington camp
This year the Year 8 students attended a school camp in Wellington.
Going on camp was a wonderful experience for the Year 8 students and
they made memories to last a lifetime.
We spent four days in Wellington and the timetable was packed with activities that
related to our school curriculum. We flew to Wellington by plane and spent our first
afternoon at the Beehive, where we had a tour and even had the chance to see
Parliament in session! Following that was a visit to National Library of New Zealand
where we saw the Treaty of Waitangi, the Declaration of Independence and the
Women’s Suffrage Petition.
Our next day began with the filming of a live TV show at Capital E. Our students
took on every role from Director to Sound Technician to News Anchor and worked
together to get the show done. We spent the rest of the day at the Wellington
Museum and Te Papa in the care of two fantastic educators. After dinner, we took an
evening stroll down the water front to Ferg’s Rock where we did some rock-climbing.
On the third day, we walked through the
Wellington Botanical Gardens to get to
Zealandia – a predator-free native bird
sanctuary in the Karori Valley. It was
incredible to see Kaka, Saddlebacks,
Takahe and even Tuatara up close. This
visit related closely to our Term Four
Science topic – New Zealand Birds. In
the afternoon we went to the Wellington
Zoo and had a tour. It was interesting to
compare the lives of animals in the Zoo
with those in the Sanctuary.
Our final day was mostly a travel day as
we took the ferry to Picton and then the
train back to Christchurch. We had a
wonderful time in Wellington. It was so
special to make such amazing memories
with our school friends before we all
leave to high school next year.
Written by Room 12
School Production
Every second year we produce a school performance for all interested pupils.
Our next School Production will be in 2021.
Technology
Our on-site technology centre provides our pupils
with a range of creative learning experiences in
different areas: Foods, Electronics, Robotics and
Materials (metal, wood, fabric and plastic). Our
pupils have created a large variety of work this
year. We also participate in Robofest, Future in
Tech programmes, EPro8 and 3D printing.
Programmes focus on Planning for Practice, Brief
Development and Outcome Evaluation.
Don’t forget, there are still some places available for
Year 7 and Year 8 for 2020.
Shops bursting with
festive gift ideas
The countdown to the big day is well underway, so making up the
Christmas gift list will now be a top priority… if you haven’t already done so.
Finding those special gifts and stocking fillers as
well as the Christmas treats for the table is so easy at
our city’s malls and shopping centres, where the shops
are bursting with festive merchandise.
Every woman likes to receive body pampering
gifts, and there is a huge selection of these priced
to suit all budgets at the many pharmacies and gift
shops around the city. Perfume is another favourite
and again there is a wide selection to choose from,
ranging from exciting new releases to the well-known
fragrances that have stood the test of time. Lingerie,
jewellery, fashion accessories, homewares and decor
items – there’s no end to the ideas for the women on
the list.
The men are equally well catered for, from the
sophisticated metro-male boyfriends, to the car-crazy
brothers and the DIY enthusiast and keen gardener
husbands and dads. Choose from clothing, books,
tools, personal grooming items and gadgets to put a
smile on their face on Christmas morning.
Speaking of smiles, nothing gives families more joy
than seeing the excitement of the children opening
their presents. Whether they are delivered by Santa
or snuck under the tree by mum and dad, the cuddly
toys, games, dolls and building blocks, the candy
canes, toy trucks and pretty dresses currently filling
the shops will bring squeals of sheer happiness from
the smallest family members.
The tweens and teens usually have their own ideas
about what they want for Christmas, so the gift cards
offered by a wide range of retailers are the perfect way
to please.
McMaster & Heap
Veterinary practice
Open Day
november 30th 2019
FINALLY, our “new build” is complete and we’d love to personally
show you all around on our OPEN DAY, which is fast approaching.
We are very proud of what we have achieved,
something that hasn’t been seen in small
animal practice before - completely separate
cat and dog reception, consulting, surgical
and ICU treatment areas.
This new edition has been seven years in
the making - a lot of time and energy has
been dedicated to this project as well as
decisions to be made on a daily basis. We
bought the old house next to the clinic in
2012 anticipating we would expand one day.
It was so exciting to finally see foundations
being laid.
grow it, but we have. We now we have a
staff of 27, a team of eight veterinarians with
different skill sets and interests - something
we are very proud of and have tried hard to
achieve. We want our clients to have all their
needs met, and those of their precious pets,
all under one roof.
Old house converted to new extension.
Demolition time.
To go back 20 years ….. In 1999 we took over
the reins of Rozens Vet Clinic ( which was an
old house situated in our carpark). We have
very fond memories of our early days there
and we were a small yet enthusiastic staff
of six back then. Our small garage doubled
as a cattery, our carpark was flooded most
of winter and inhabited by Mallards, X-rays
were manually developed in the toilet and
often we were so busy cages were stacked
on top of each other in the surgical area.
Our young sons, Connor and Dylan, often
watched their mum and dad perform
surgeries, cuddling and playing with kittens
in the small staffroom. They were good times
and we got to know some terrific, animal
mad clients, who are still with us 20 years on.
The Practice we work out of now was built
in 2008 and never thought we would out
Smartflow patient monitoring.
Cat ICU and treatment area.
Aside from the separate cat wing, our new
280 square metre addition will feature
space for rehabilitation and physiotherapy,
a state off the art theatre and surgical wing
for referral surgeries, a double dental room,
another feline ward, large ultrasonography
room and extra kennelling for about 20 dogs
plus storage galore.
We are very proud to now be able to offer
Referral Surgery at McMaster & Heap Vets. Dr
Helen Milner has now joined the team who
is an Australian and New Zealand Registered
Specialist in Small Animal Surgery. She will
be able to offer a wide array of soft tissue,
orthopaedic and neurological surgeries.
ORIJEN and ACANA
are proud to support
McMaster & Heap with
their hospital and NEW cat
only treatment extension.
The ORIJEN and ACANA
Dog and Cat food range
are available in the
clinic.
McMaster & Heap
Veterinary practice
We are also very fortunate to have the
services of Dr Richard Lucy who does
all the Echocardiography, Endoscopy
and Abdominal and Musculoskeletal
Ultrasonography in the Practice. Richard
has also put pacemakers in dogs, performs
our spinal taps and can also interpret MRI’s
and CT scans. He’s consulted a lot by us all.
Richard and Helens ethics, empathy, genuine
love of all animals, professional style and
incredibly high skill level fits with our aim of
becoming a “Centre of Excellence”.
Our other vets are also skilled up in areas
of interest and passion to them - Steve
with Ophthalmology, Dentistry and
Reconstructive Surgery, Sara enjoying
Dermatology and Exotics, Olivia a whiz at
all tricky Dentistry, Kirsty is very competent
in Soft Tissue Surgery, Chemotherapy and
Transfusion Medicine and Catherine is a
fantastic Medicine and Intensive Care expert
as well as performing Ultrasounds whenever
Richard is away. Me, I’m a jack of all trades,
doing a little of everything but my passion
lies with consulting and meeting new pets
and people, radiography and surgery.
Michele and steve in the cattery.
In the past 20 years we have learnt heaps
about running a successful business and
working together as a team. One of our goals
is to lead by example and empower our staff
to be their best, enjoy what they are good
at and love coming to work for us every day.
The right people, with the right set of skills
and attitude, are the key to our success.
The NZL Veterinary industry is rapidly
changing with many Practices being bought
by Corporate Entities and amalgamating with
practices. The need to keep up, diversify,
provide flexibility and options for people
and find your niche area is our future aim.
We will never stand still and be complacent.
We will listen to our clients and staff and see
what they want from us going forward in the
future.
Cat clinic entrance.
Theatre preparation & surgical scrub area.
We have also moved fast with regards to
technology. I’m not really a starter for change
but Steve persisted and eventually had me
sold on our new veterinary software system,
EzyVet and our new patient monitoring and
billing system, Smartflow. We are virtually
paperless and you’ll see our nurses walking
around with iPads updating flowsheets and
monitoring anaesthetics. Now I couldn’t
go back. This system is so accurate, very
professional and way more efficient.
I hope McMaster & Heap will stand the test
of time, cementing itself in Christchurch, as a
hospital who pride themselves on excellence,
expertise, quality patient care and full
commitment to our people and their pets.
We would love to see you on Saturday
30th November between 12-3pm for a look
around at where your special furries stay
when they are with us and enjoy a coffee,
sausage sizzle and get advice or just enjoy
a chat from our super staff and industry
representatives who will be present on the
day also. There will also be cat and dog
goodie bags, raffles and discount vouchers
on some foods.
Hope to see you real soon.
