BILLY KIMMERLY
a role model in his new school,’’ said Frontenacs
academic advisor Kim Hulton.
Wright, along with coach Kurtis Foster, was invited
to represent Canada at the World Under-17 Hockey
Challenge in Alberta/Saskatchewan from Nov.2 to
Nov.9. He captained Team Canada (Black) while
scoring four goals and seven points in five games.
The soon to be 16-year-old (Jan 5 birthdate)
entered Wednesday on a five-game point streak
seeing him collect 5 goals and seven points recording
four goals during two wins against Sudbury and
Mississauga. He leads all OHL rookies with 69 shots
on goal. Sitting second in Kingston points (18) and
goals (10), his 0.95 points per game average leads
the team despite missing four games while playing
for Canada. He’s tied for the team lead in powerplay
goals with Nick Wong (4) while playing a smart game
being called himself on just one penalty so far.
Coach Foster has confidence in the rookie
employing him in pivotal moments because of his
smart 200-foot game. Out for a face-off with 20
seconds left in the win last Sunday vs Mississauga
is what Wright wants encompassing a strong desire
being a player to be counted on in his own end as
much as scoring. He’s won 47.2% of face-offs taken
(136/288) showing strong numbers for a first-year
player.
With his propensity to make big plays in key
moments going back to the OHL Cup setting up
the winning goal in overtime, he’s already excited
Kingston fans with two game-winning goals with a
shootout winner in Peterborough and an overtime
thriller against Niagara. His tenacity in playing defence
is noticeable as his two-way game complements his
offensive IQ well.
He lists his parents Simon and Tanya as his role
models while his hockey idols are Sidney Crosby and
Matthew Barzal. KF
