KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT

DON MILLS FLYERS REUNION AT LEON’S CENTRE

FIVE ROOKIES FROM DON MILLS SKATE WITH EACH OTHER FOR THE FIRST TIME

Anyone following the OHL draft in April is aware of

how many members of the 2018-19 Don Mills Flyers

were selected by OHL teams. Tonight’s match-up

features 5 players from that team. Two players from

the Frontenacs, Shane Wright and Francesco Arcuri,

will face their former teammates for the first time.

Alex and Paul Christopoulos and Liam Arnsby are

playing in their rookie season for the Battalion. Arnsby

led North Bay rookies in scoring with 8 points heading

into their game in Peterborough on Thursday night.

He was followed closely by Paul Christopolous who

had 7 points. Paul and his twin brother Alex had both

scored two goals so far this season.

Kingston’s Francesco Arcuri has had a strong start

to his OHL career as well. His 8 points match the output

of Liam Arnsby’s. Arcuri scored on Wednesday

night against Ottawa after being reunited on a line with

Shane Wright in the second period. Shane drew an

assist on Arcuri’s goal, like he did many times with

the Flyers, giving him 19 points in his rookie season.

That puts him second in OHL rookie scoring despite

missing 4 games while at the World U-17 tournament.

The Battalion can’t be fans of playing at Leon’s

Centre. They have lost 9 straight games as the visitors.

Their last regular season victory in this building came

on Nov. 7, 2014. Kingston has won 10 of 12 all-time

regular season games at Leon’s Centre between the

two teams. KF

Shane Wright officially became a member of

the Kingston Frontenacs on April 6th, 2019

after gaining exceptional status (first since Connor

McDavid) in March for eligibility in the Ontario

Hockey League as a 15-year-old. When the Kingston

Frontenacs made the 1st overall pick in the 2019

OHL Priority Selection, Wright was brought in to be

an integral part of a young nucleus the team can

build with on the ice. Just as important, the selection

brought in a player any team would be proud to have

represent them off the ice.

A standout before bantam hockey, Wright played

23 games with 27 goals and 53 points in select

tournaments between 2013-17. In 2017-18, the

Burlington, Ontario native collected 15 points in 8

games for the Don Mills Flyers Bantam AAA squad

and was named Bantam OHF Championship

Tournament MVP. With the Oshawa Generals Selects

Under-15 club he played in six games with three

points joining current Frontenac Maddox Callens.

2018/19 saw the bantam aged Wright suit up

for the Don Mills Flyers AAA midget system in the

Greater Toronto Hockey league where his offensive

game would explode. Helping the Flyers to a title

while recording 150 points in 72 regular-season

games during an unbelievable year, they lost just

once all season. During the championship, being

named the MVP, he set-up the game-winning goal in

overtime to clinch the OHL Cup for Don Mills leading

tournament scoring with 18 points (one less than

Connor McDavid’s record) in seven games.

16

Don Mills saw eight players selected in the top-50

at the 2019 OHL Priority Selection including Wright

and Brennan Othmann second overall by the Flint

Firebirds. It was fitting that Wright had played with

Othmann for three years and considers him one of his

best friends. Current teammate Francesco Arcuri was

also selected from Don Mills by Kingston with their

second pick.

Wright represented Team Ontario last Feb/Mar

at the Canada Winter Games in Alberta capturing a

silver medal scoring six goals and 12 points in six

games. The youngest on the team, he served as

captain. Additionally, he was also named Marlies

Holiday Tournament MVP and GTHL TOP Prospects

Tournament Team MVP over that year.

The beginning of the 2019/20 season saw the 6

foot, 180 pound forward suit up in four exhibition

games with a goal and three assists. He made his

Frontenacs OHL regular-season debut on home

ice against the Oshawa Generals on Sept 20th,

recording his first goal/point in his third game against

the Andrew McLean in Oshawa on Sept 29th. He

registered his first multi-point game including the

game-winning goal in overtime the next game against

the Niagara IceDogs on Oct 4th giving Kingston its

first win of the year.

Being named valedictorian for his Grade 8

graduating class at the Hill Academy in Vaughan,

he continues his scholastic efforts being named

OHL East Division Academic Player of the Month

for October maintaining a 95% grade average at

Holy Cross Secondary School. “The staff at Holy

Cross are exceptionally impressed with his maturity,

commitment to his studies and his ability to act as

OFFICIAL GAME DAY MAGAZINE, VOLUME 47, ISSUE 12

BILLY KIMMERLY

a role model in his new school,’’ said Frontenacs

academic advisor Kim Hulton.

Wright, along with coach Kurtis Foster, was invited

to represent Canada at the World Under-17 Hockey

Challenge in Alberta/Saskatchewan from Nov.2 to

Nov.9. He captained Team Canada (Black) while

scoring four goals and seven points in five games.

The soon to be 16-year-old (Jan 5 birthdate)

entered Wednesday on a five-game point streak

seeing him collect 5 goals and seven points recording

four goals during two wins against Sudbury and

Mississauga. He leads all OHL rookies with 69 shots

on goal. Sitting second in Kingston points (18) and

goals (10), his 0.95 points per game average leads

the team despite missing four games while playing

for Canada. He’s tied for the team lead in powerplay

goals with Nick Wong (4) while playing a smart game

being called himself on just one penalty so far.

Coach Foster has confidence in the rookie

employing him in pivotal moments because of his

smart 200-foot game. Out for a face-off with 20

seconds left in the win last Sunday vs Mississauga

is what Wright wants encompassing a strong desire

being a player to be counted on in his own end as

much as scoring. He’s won 47.2% of face-offs taken

(136/288) showing strong numbers for a first-year

player.

With his propensity to make big plays in key

moments going back to the OHL Cup setting up

the winning goal in overtime, he’s already excited

Kingston fans with two game-winning goals with a

shootout winner in Peterborough and an overtime

thriller against Niagara. His tenacity in playing defence

is noticeable as his two-way game complements his

offensive IQ well.

He lists his parents Simon and Tanya as his role

models while his hockey idols are Sidney Crosby and

Matthew Barzal. KF
