growers look at a number of factors,
such as commodity pricing, labor availability,
water, mechanization, etcetera,
a number of crops to plant begin to
emerge; almonds, walnuts, pistachios,
wine-grapes, and more.
“Then, growers will look at commodity
pricing, certain commodities rise in
their economic conclusions and others
decline.” Matoian said. “In pistachios,
we have seen annual plantings rise since
2003 to the present. Throughout those
years, we have seen plantings as low as
7,500 acres in a given year, and other
years around 15,000 acres. We have
been averaging about 11,000 acres per
year over the last 15 years.”
