The Pegasus Radio Sailing Club has been awarded the inaugural International OneMetreClass Oceania RegionalChampionships. It won the right to host the championshipaftervenues from across Australia and New Zealand were considered. The New Zealand RadioYachting Association, in conjunction with the AustralianRadio YachtingAssociation, announced last week thatthe clubhad won the right to hostthe eventonthe 18hectarelake. The lake is 500 metres long and varies between 100 and 200 metres wide, providing 3.5km of foreshore with five different sailing areas to cater for all wind conditions. The event is endorsed by the International Radio Sailing Association and supported by the International One MetreClass Association. The event will run from <strong>December</strong> 2to 5next year. It is the firstmajorInternational One Metre(IOM) eventtobehosted by either of the two countries since the 1997IOM WorldChampionship in Wellington and the 20<strong>05</strong>IOM World Championship held in Mooloolaba, Australia. It will become aregular international eventscheduled on abiannual basis in nonWorld Championship years. Hosting rights will be alternated between New Zealand and Australia. Entries for the 2020 eventwill be limited to 60 skippers, with an allocation of 30 places beingawardedtothe host country, 20 places to Australia and 10 guestsplaces allocated to skippers outside of the two countries. Allocation of placesfor the Australiaand New Zealand skippers willbebased on the current ranking systemsinboth countries, with ranking points awarded for participation in each country’s regional events. Just afew weeks before the event, the New ZealandIOM championship will be sailed at the lakefrom November 27 to 29, providingthe chancefor sailors to finetune their sailing before the international event. It will also give spectators the chance to enjoy the sailing. Woodend Lions president Ian Lennie says he is looking forward to handing over the memorial to the community at the end of atwoyear journey. ‘‘It’s all go. The memorial is almost finished. ‘‘The flag pole is up and the council just has one last tidyup to do before Sunday. ‘‘It’s been atwoyear journey. It took a while to get the funding in place and then 10 months to get it built.’’ The Woodend Lions led the fundraising project with nearly $60,000 raised, while the Waimakariri District Council’s greenspace team projectmanaged the construction of the memorial. Mr Lennie says the memorial, located next to the Woodend Community Centre, will carry around 30 names of soldiers who lost their lives. They have been taken from memorial boards in the Woodend Community Centre and in the Brick Mill Cafe in Waikuku. Unlike the memorial boards, the new memorial will be accessible at all times. Mr Lennie hopes it will become afocal point on Anzac Day. ‘‘Right from the start we identified that Woodend didn’t have awar memorial and we wanted to create one with aunique and modern design.’’ He says the project has been made possible with the support of the Rangiora and Kaiapoi RSAs, the council and the wider community. ‘‘Whenever we’ve asked for support, it’s been forthcoming. It’s been ajoy to be involved in it.’’ The memorial will be unveiled during ashort ceremony at 11am on Sunday, with national RSA president BJ Clark, Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon and MP Matt Doocey invited to attend.
