LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
MISSION
OUR DUAL MISSION:
Breakthrough Manchester provides six years of intensive, tuition-free programming
to support under-served Manchester students on the path to college.
We are building the next generation of teachers through competitive recruitment,
research-based training, and coaching from master educators.
PROMOTING CAREERS
IN EDUCATION
High school and college
students receive training,
support and hands-on
experience. They are
inspired to become
the next generation of
educators and leaders
in our community.
Dear Breakthrough Community;
Despite the ongoing construction happening
on Derryfield School’s campus, Breakthrough
Manchester had a spectacular Summer
of 2019! On June 12, we welcomed 24
Teaching Fellows to Orientation from as close
as Manchester and as far away as Ireland!
They were a dynamic force of teachers and
learners — eager to make a difference in the
lives of our Manchester middle schoolers. We
were having so much fun preparing for our
students that I almost didn’t want Orientation
to end! However, on Monday June 24th, the
buses arrived to great cheering and fanfare
and Breakthrough was off and running! We
experienced 6 weeks of intense learning,
creative extracurriculars, dynamic public
speaking, inspiring musical performances,
awesome field trips, wonderful student and
teacher connections and lots of crazy FUN!
It was all that I had imagined — and more!
Executive Director, Deb McLoud
with a Breakthrough student and
her Jayme’s Bear that was crafted
during “Service and Gratitude Day“
to comfort children in a local hospital.
We are thrilled to finally have students in all six years of Breakthrough Manchester
programming! Heartfelt appreciation is extended to Derryfield School who
founded Summerbridge (now Breakthrough) Manchester 28 years ago and
continues to provide very generous in-kind support. We are also grateful that
Breakthrough’s College-Bound program is fully supported by Southern New
Hampshire University.
However, we could not provide this valuable programming for our Manchester
students without the support of Charitable Foundations and generous donors
who are now fully recognized on our website. Please sit back and enjoy this
Year in Review and thank you for your support of Breakthrough Manchester.
Gratefully,
Debra McLoud
Executive Director, Breakthrough Manchester
THANK YOU LUCY WEATHERS!
For three summers, she enthusiastically cheered alongside our
Breakthrough students and teachers! Lucy made all the details
of recruitment and programming happen like magic. However, it
wasn’t magic; it was her hard work and dedication to educational
equality that made everything happen so seamlessly. We will miss
Lucy as she moves to Gear Up and continues to work with students
in Parkside Middle School. Good Luck Lucy!
A SUMMER DAY
FOR A TEACHING FELLOW
Angela Romilla, a Breakthrough student alum, has returned as a
Teaching Fellow for the past two summers. As a fifth grader who
was quiet without much confidence, the Breakthrough program
encouraged Angela to come out of her shell and find her voice.
Teaching for the past two summers, Angela has helped other
students advocate for themselves. Her sister Carmina is now a
student in the program, and Angela loves being able to see the
same transformation in her sister. Angela is proud to give back
to a program that has made such an impact for her family.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF
A TEACHING FELLOW
7:30am
MORNING
HUDDLE
As students arrive by bus or drop
off, we greet them outside with
a “high five” line then a themed
welcome activity. Each student
receives a personal
“good morning” and
handshake from a Director to
start their day.
8:00am
ATTENDANCE
& CHEERS
We solo-teach two
academic classes daily.
I taught 9th grade writing. As part of
my lesson plans, the students worked
on writing college essays as well as a
research paper based on a social justice
issue of their choice. We work closely
with our Instructional Coaches, who
provide support with lesson planning,
modifying curriculum, and
classroom management.
12:45pm
LUNCH &
RECESS
For Community
Block, we enjoy different
activities as a whole
community. Being on the
Boston Trip Committee, we
prepared students for our
annual Boston field trip. There’s
also a College Fair held during
the summer, with information
presented by each teacher on
the college they attend.
1:30pm
EXTRACUR-
RICULAR
SETH stands for Study,
Enrichment, Tutoring, and
Homework. As teachers, we help
our students get started on
homework, and give them extra
help when needed. Another
opportunity for working
one-on-one!
3:00pm
STUDENT
DISMISSAL
We attend faculty
meetings along with the staff.
We have announcements, kudos
(a chance to shout out thank you’s
to fellow teachers), and
snapshots (sharing cool moments
of our students). We vote on
spirit stick winners weekly, which
are students who exemplify
the Breakthrough spirit.
4:00pm
COMMITTEE
MEETINGS
There are often
follow up meetings.
On Mondays, we have
a Faculty Social with
snacks and time to relax
as we start the week.
The teachers have many
opportunities throughout
the summer to bond
with each other!
Our mornings start by
setting up our classrooms
and reviewing lesson plans,
followed by a huddle of all
Teaching Fellows and staff.
During this meeting,
leadership reviews the
upcoming day and offers
an inspirational thought.
7:50am
WELCOME
STUDENTS
As Teaching Fellows, we
are assigned 4 student
advisees who we sit with at
breakfast. We have a very unique
attendance at BTM which includes
many cheers from our growing list
of almost 100! We have individual
cheers, advisory cheers, and a
question of the day. It’s great to
have all students participate!
8:40am
ACADEMIC
CLASSES
At lunchtime, all the
Teaching Fellows join
students and have lunch together.
This is a really fun part of the day
because the students are more
relaxed and I am able to get to
know them on a more personal
level to really bond with them.
After lunch, we go outside for
fresh air, sports and games.
1:00pm
COMMUNITY
BLOCK
Each summer, fun classes
known as extracurriculars,
are chosen by the Teaching
Fellows based on their
interests. This summer,
I chose Journalism. The
students worked on writing
articles and interviewing
skills, and culminated in a
student newspaper that
was posted online.
2:25pm
SETH
Teachers walk the students
outside to be picked up by the
bus or a family member.
We wave and sing songs as they
are leaving, such as “Big Bus”
or the “Homework Song”.
Some days we even get to ride
the bus with them!
3:15pm
FACULTY
MEETING
We have training sessions
throughout the summer presented
by the heads of committees for
upcoming events, such as
Olympics, Spirit Week, or
Service and Gratitude Day.
COLLEGE-BOUND
AT SNHU
Breakthrough Manchester College-Bound at
SNHU successfully completed its third year of
high school programming. In 2018-2019, the
program supported 9 juniors, 16 sophomores,
and 27 freshmen who began their college
access journeys with Breakthrough Manchester
as rising 7th graders. In fall of 2019, the high
school program moved into serving all four
grades for the first time, accepting 30 new
freshmen!
The College-Bound Program
is fully funded by
Southern New Hampshire University
“My favorite part of
College-Bound is the
workshops on Saturdays
and that I had an advisor
to communicate with and
help me through my first
year of high school.”
BREAKTHROUGH IMPACT
CARL DESIR
Carl Desir, a Breakthrough College-Bound
student who was born in Haiti, is currently a
sophomore in high school at the Academy
for Science and Design. Carl has been
a Breakthrough student since 2015 and
served as Program Assistant this past
summer. In this role, Carl gained experience
in communication skills, team building,
leadership, and reliability to ensure every
day ran smoothly. Carl developed a strong
connection with the students and strived to
inspire them to be themselves. Carl will be
returning as Program Assistant for the current
School Year Program, which will give him an opportunity to continue growing
his leadership skills.
Carl was recently invited to attend a Breakthrough Collaborative “Catch
the Breakthrough Spirit” national event to speak on his experience with
Breakthrough Manchester. Carl had the opportunity to visit San Francisco on behalf
of the national organization with Deb, our Executive Director, and speak at this
annual fundraiser with fellow Breakthrough students and teachers from across the
country. He shared that, “Breakthrough Manchester is not only a place where
kids come to learn and get guidance for college but also a place where kids
come to get out of their comfort zones, express themselves without the worry of
judgment and reach for goals that they thought they would never achieve.”
four grades, 9-12, will be participating in the program.
WELCOME BACK
Breakthrough Manchester is excited to
introduce our new Assistant Director,
Chau Ngo. Chau has been involved with
Breakthrough Manchester since 2006 as
a student, Super Saturday Teaching Intern,
and Teaching Fellow. She is a graduate of
Massachusetts College of Art and Design
with a B.F.A. in Art Education and is excited
to share her vision as Assistant Director.
Prior to joining Breakthrough, Chau
completed the U.S. Fulbright Program
serving as a cultural ambassador and
teaching English in Rich Gia, Vietnam.
Living in Vietnam for 10-months, she
was able to experience working in the
Vietnamese school system, fostering
opportunities for cultural exchange, and
explore her roots and heritage.
Chau Ngo
Assistant Director
Breakthrough Manchester
Her identity as a first generation, Vietnamese-American from a low-income
family plays a significant role in shaping who she is, the work that she does,
and her professional goals — to cultivate an environment where students
are given equal opportunity in education, and are able to celebrate their
background and experiences.
As Assistant Director, she expresses that
“Breakthrough is a program whose mission is to increase academic
opportunity for motivated students by preparing them for college.
It supported my family and me in areas where there were gaps.
I discovered that, with the right resources, students,
with backgrounds similar to my own, can meet their goals.
Working at Breakthrough in the past has afforded me the opportunity
to better understand the significance of education equity
and I am honored to contribute to this work.”
