“Making Lauder Blooming Lovely!”
Festive Foliage - Saturday 7 th December 10-12 in Lauder Public Hall
Come along to our annual Festive Foliage workshop where we’ll be making the
150 bunches to decorate our town from one end to the other. There will be
mince pies for the helpers! If anyone is cutting back their laurel or similar
evergreen foliage we can make use of 2 foot lengths. Thank you.
Friends of Lauder in Bloom. Perhaps you’re looking for a gift for someone then
why not take out a year’s membership of our ‘Friends of Lauder in Bloom’. For
less than 3p a day members receive a quarterly newsletter and are automatically
entered into a prize draw every 3 months. Joining forms are available in Lauder
Library, The Flat Cat and The Purple Plum.
Co-op Community Fund. If you shop at the Co-op and like what we do then why not choose Lauder in
Bloom as your local cause for this next round of the Co-op Local Community Fund.
https://account.coop.co.uk/sign-in These funds will help provide spring and summer floral displays as well
as helping us to continue our other projects including our Juniors & Seniors club, our Garden Helpers
Service to those in need in our community along with our army of Lauder Litter Lifters. Help keep our town
looking lovely for locals and visitors alike. Thank you!
Working with ‘In Bloom’ groups across the Borders. Following the reduction in Council services to 'In
Bloom’ groups in the region we saw this as a positive opportunity for groups to come together to share
information and best practice as well as providing a support network for each other. We were delighted by
the response and we’re hopeful that this new Network will enable groups to find positive solutions to help
fill the gaps which SBC are no longer able to provide including sourcing bedding plants, grass maintenance
and street weeding as well as providing an invaluable support network for groups. Thanks to SBC for
helping us to circulate the invites and to the Lauderdale Hotel for accommodating us and for providing the
best home-made shortbread biscuits.
National Beautiful Scotland Conference. We recently attended the national Beautiful Scotland conference
in Stirling where we were asked to present on our award-winning Juniors & Seniors Club as well as our
Pollinators Patches @ The Park. Our presentations and stall were very well received and we hope we’ve
inspired other groups across Scotland to give it a go.
Real Christmas Tree Recycling. Save yourself a trip to the dump and don’t forget to bring us your real
Christmas tree for recycling on Saturday 4 th January between 13:00 and 15:00 at the Primary School.
Thanks to Firebrick Bakery, The Purple Plum and Lauder Co-op for accommodating our collection tins and
to Lauder Library for hosting our on-going free Seed Swap & suggestion box. Contact us at
lauderinbloom@gmail.com, find us on Facebook or chat to any of the Team who are often out and about
in our blue ‘Lauder in Bloom’ polo shirts. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Lauderdale Hotel
On Saturday 2nd November 2019, the Lauderdale
Hunt met for their Opening Meet at Thirlestane
Castle. There were around 70 mounted followers
ranging from pre-school children on lead rein
ponies to ex-racehorses and everything in between,
together with lots of people on foot keen to see the
hounds. The horses and ponies were immaculate
having been bathed before hand and manes
plaited. We set off down to the Eagle Haugh and
crossed the Leader which was quite high adding to
the excitement. It had been very wet so the river
crossing and muddy fields meant those beautiful
turnouts didn’t stay clean for long. We followed the
hounds and huntsman, Claire Bellamy, across the
Thirlestane Policies before crossing over the A68
onto the hills beside the Kennels. The bold then
followed the hounds over a series of jumps in the
walls while the rest of the field quickly navigated
through the gates. There is always a way round.
It was great to be out, enjoying a bond with your
horse, watching the hounds work and having the
opportunity to see the marvellous Lauderdale
countryside. Thanks to the landowners, farmers
and other land users for making it possible.
We hunt every Tuesday and Saturday until the
beginning of March weather permitting.
Our next social event is the Lauderdale Hunt
Supporters’ Christmas Supper & Auction at Lauder
Public Hall on Friday, 6th December at 6.30 pm.

Community
Council News
November 2018
Our purpose in holding the bonfire and fireworks again this year
was not only to address some of the requests that came out of
our older survey “The Big Question” but by hosting a community
event we hoped to minimise the number of private fireworks
parties.
A big thank you to those of you who supplied the bonfire with
wood and of course the Batman Guy! The total amount raised
from the buckets on the evening was £96.00 and £40.00 as a
donation from the Ice cream Van and Sweetie Stall, all of which
all will go towards the total cost of £750. If any of you missed
the bucket or would like to make an additional donation please
speak to one of the Community Councillors or message them via
Facebook or the Website.
We would like to thank Lauderdale’s Rotary Club for supplying
the hot food, The Lauder Ice cream van for supplying the ice
cream and, last but not least, Earlston Sweetie shop for the
wonderful toffee apples and sweets.
Thank you also to all conscientious parents for picking up the
metal rods from the sparklers and a huge congratulations to all
the youngsters who behaved impeccably. All in all, this event
seemed to be a success and the feedback received so far seems
to confirm that holding an organised event does discourage
‘back garden fireworks’ reducing potential anxiety levels for
others, pets and farm animals.
Some of you may also have spotted our new Leaderdale and
Melrose CBO PC 5158 Calum Wilson who dropped in just to
check everything went okay.
VE Day
As many of you will know May Day is traditionally held on
a Monday but next year will be held on Friday 8 May 2020 to
celebrate VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day. VE Day marks the
day towards the end of World War Two when fighting against
Nazi Germany came to an end in Europe. The holiday will
form part of a three-day weekend of commemorative events.
Lauderdale Community Council are hoping that most, if not all,
groups within Lauderdale, will pull together and participate in a
‘Joint Community’ event and we will be holding a meeting in the
New Year where all Groups will be welcome to attend to bring
their thoughts to the table.
Many of you may not know that PC 5955 Michael Norrie, is now
not Leaderdale & Melrose CBO. Our new CBO is PC 5158 Calum
Wilson, CBO. He can be emailed at calum.wilson@scotland.pnn.
police.uk or LeaderdaleMelroseCPT@scotland.pnn.police.uk
Meantime, if there is anything we can help you with, please,
feel free to attend our Meetings which take place on the 2nd
Monday of every month. We would also ask that, in the event of
bad weather, we all pull together to help each other, but, please
remember that elderly neighbours may appreciate some extra
consideration.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Very
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Lauderdale Choir
Since returning to Choir after holidays we have been on
"Eggheads" on TV: our team did so well and so nearly
beat the opposing team. Well done to Emma Emmerson,
John McPherson, Tommy Syme, Sandy Sutherland &
Julia Loudon!
We are very busy preparing for our next concert on
Saturday 7th December at Earston HS. We are perfoming
music that has been composed and/or arranged by
women; the focus being a five-movement piece entitled
'Snow Angel' by Canadian composer Sarah Quartel.
This will feature the choir plus cello and piano (it would
be good to mention the two Claires) Other composers
we are including are Scotland's own Karine Polwart,
Ali Burns and Annie Lennox. We will also perform a
beautiful arrangement of 'Flowers of the Forest' by one
of our own sopranos, Karin Griffin. Tickets are available
from choir members and Woodside Garden Centre,
Ancrum.
We love welcoming new members to our choir!
Membership of the choir is open to anyone. There
are no auditions and there is no requirement to read
music. Enthusiasm and a desire to sing are the only
requirements.
If you would like to give singing a try, come along on
any Thursday at 7.30pm to Lauder Public Hall with
no obligation. You don't have to become a member
immediately - feel free to come to a couple of rehearsals
first to see if it's for you. There are section reps for
the individual sections to help new members settle in
and guests receive a music folder for use during the
rehearsal. If you would prefer to contact someone first,
you can e-mail join@lauderdalechoir.org.uk or use the
contact form and someone will be in touch.

as our individual pieces. These will be on show at
our next exhibition.

With Christmas fast approaching the importance of
home safety is more relevant than ever trees and
lights going up, decorations, ornamental candles,
these all lead to an added risk in the household!
For home safety advice speak to any of the local
firefighters or call the station on a Wednesday night
between 6.30pm and 9.00pm on 01578 718906.
We are still on the hunt for new faces to join the crew,
do you fit the bill? Do you want a new challenge?
Could you provide the time to serve and protect your
local community? If so, we would like to hear from
you!

1st Lauder Guides have had a very busy term so far;
we had a ball at the Tartan Gig in Glasgow in August,
where the girls saw some of their favourite music icons
perform - a very memorable night for them as always!
In the Guides we have been working very hard on our
skill builders to earn badges. One or our patrols did
a bake sale for the charity “Dreams Come True” and
raised £44.46. Well done girls; you did amazing!
We had great fun at Bowhill, where the guides had
a great day outside, despite the rain. We were den
building and playing in the adventure playground,
where we made lots of new friends, before heading
inside for some creative fun.
Back at Lauder, we have all enjoyed making sock
monkeys, had Waste Aware Lauderdale in and made
posters for them to advertise, before making our
reusable beeswax wraps, which reduce waste and help
the environment.
We recently had our Halloween party where the girls
dressed up and had great fun apple bobbing, before
putting their faces in flour to dig out sweets - this
produced some “ghostly” faces - and put their hands in
goo to get more. We then had some yummy snacks and
pizza. Later, we went outside and celebrated bonfire
night with sparklers and made patterns with them.

Lauderdale Library
TENNIS CLUB
Winter nights are here so it’s a good time to settle
down at the fireside with a good book so do pop down
to the Library and browse our extensive collections
for both adults and children.
To get you in the reading mood we will be having
an Advent Countdown to Christmas in December
on Facebook. Look out for a different featured book
every day!
The Library was very glad to recieve a number of books
and papers relating to Lauderdale from local resident,
Andrew Mercer, recently. These have been added to
our archive and are available to everyone for reference.
There are still some of the 1913 Lauder booklets and
1832 Lauder maps available, both cost only £3 and
would make good stocking-fillers. They are available
from the Library, the Post Office, the Spotty Dog and
the Purple Plum.
The last Library session before Christmas will be
Saturday 21st December, and we will re-open on
Saturday 4th January.
Our usual opening times are -
Tuesdays 2-4pm: Thursdays 5-7pm
Saturdays 10am - noon
The nets are now down for winter but we have put up an
oldish net on one court for any brave souls to enjoy a knockup
on a crisp day?
The Club has enjoyed a quiet season with some Club nights
being missed because of poor weather – likewise the Sunday
tournaments didn’t happen every month. Our annual
AGM will take place in January – watch our FaceBook page
for date/time.
The landscaping and clearing phase one is now complete
and the Club is again, so grateful for the fantastic efforts of
John Heatlie and his Criminal Justice Team and help with
the maintenance of the clubhouse. We wish a very merry
Christmas and great New Year to all the Lauder Tennis
players from all on the committee and look forward to
seeing you and new members on court in 2020.

BORDERS VINTAGE AUTOMOBILE CLUB
BVAC members and friends from the Rolls Royce
Enthusiasts Club took a variety of interesting old
cars along to Thirlestane Castle in August to meet
Peter Davison and Christopher Timothy (remember
‘All Creatures Great and Small’?) and film a piece for
their Channel 4 series ‘Great British Car Journeys’. It
was broadcast last month and is still available online,
but hurry, as by the time you read this it will only be
available for a few more days! Series 2, Episode 3
is the one you want. It takes the pair on a run from
Edinburgh to Hadrian’s Wall through some lovely
Borders countryside.
Meanwhile, although you don’t see so many of the
old cars on the roads through the winter, we’re not
idle. Maintenance, repairs and refurbishment keep
going and of course planning is underway for our
next big show at Thirlestane! More details will be
announced in the spring, but the date for your diary
is Sunday, June 7th.
David Hunter
The day visitor season at Thirlestane Castle may now be
over for another year but the holiday apartments are as busy
as ever and available throughout the year.
We now have five apartments available and can sleep a total
of 16 people within the castle.
We are currently finalising our summer events and hope to
have a number of special events at the castle throughout the
summer including outdoor theatre and of course the BVAC
Classic Festival of Motoring which will be held on Sunday
7th June. We will be announcing our 2020 Events in the
New Year so please follow us on social media to keep up to
date with what we have planned. You can also check our
website for news and all our events -
www.thirlestanecastle.co.uk
We are always looking for new volunteers to help look after
our vistors at the castle. If you have a few hours spare over
the summer months and would like to offer your time please
get in contact. You don’t need to be an expert in history,
we have several different roles to suit different interests and
skills.
We have the Historic Houses Christmas cards for sale which
feature a beautiful snowy Thirlestane captured by Lauder
photographer Phil Wilkinson (below). Please contact the
castle directly if you are interested in purchasing a pack.
We will be selling a selection of Christmas Trees from
Thirlestane Castle Caravan Park this winter. If you are
looking to purchase a tree to decorate then these will be
available shortly with a donation from every sale going
towards the charity Click Sergent.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the castle in 2019.
We wish all Lauderdale residents a very Happy Christmas
and send good wishes for the New Year ahead.

Since the last edition we have been busy with the
Scottish Horse of the Year Show and the English Home
Pony along with the regular shows here in Scotland.
Amy had a very successful weekend to finish off her
time in 138cm Ponies with a win at Muirmill on the
Saturday and then she won the Scottish Horse of the
Year Show 138 Championship on Forest Brambles just
before Brambles headed south to her new home.
Megan had very good placings on both Norbet and RS
Capello who is now back in work again and coming
a very creditable 4th in the leading show jumper at
SHOYs
We then headed south to the English Home Pony at
Southview Cheshire where both girls were picked to
represent Scotland again on the 148cm team. The
team rode superly and managed to pick up the Bronze
medal! Amy had a very successful show on Tobar
King (Charlie) coming second on the first day in the
qualifier and then winning the class the next day.
Sadly the final jump off was not best suited to Charlie
who loves tight turns but this had more long runs so
she finished just outside the placings. She also had
her young home produced pony, RSCassini (Cass)
down with her and he jumped a lovely dc the first day
so that’s him now qualified for the newcomer second
rounds to try and qualify for HOYS next year. He went
on to win the class on both of the next two days in a
row in classes of over 60 starters .
Then it was back to our local venue, Ian Stark’s, where
Megan had her new ride, Jumping Toby, out for the
first time and they won both the 90cm and the 1m
classes! Sister, Amy, took 2nd in the 1m on Cass and
then Megan, jumping on her new horse took 2nd in
the 110m class.
We now have the Scottish Branch Trophy Show
coming up then we’ll have a quieter few weeks until
Amy starts the winter premier shows and Megan will
move full time into horses as she is off ponies at the
end of this year. Next year is going to be challenging
as we’ll need to juggle horse and pony shows !!!

WESTRUTHER & CHANNELKIRK PRIMARY SCHOOLS
WESTRUTHER PS - P7
CHANNELKIRK PS - P7
CHANNELKIRK PS PARENT COUNCIL
Back in September the parent council held a
sponsored walk around the village which raised
a fantastic £429 which was followed by our
bingo night, making our own Christmas cards
and shortly our wreath making evening adding
further to the funds. The children have been
busy making lots of plans for wthat they would
like to put the money towards in the new year
and we look forward to seeing all their ideas
going forward.
Laura Brotherstone
What a fantastic first term we have had here at Westruther
and Channelkirk Primary Schools! I am delighted and
privileged to be here as the new Head Teacher of both
schools and am very much enjoying the new challenges this
is bringing. The families, children and staff of both schools
have been lovely - warm and welcoming - and have helped
me to settle in quickly.
The year got off to a flying start with new P7s being appointed
as new ‘P7 Leadership Teams’ (pictured). In P7 the children
are given many opportunities to lead – whether it be in
ECO improvements, encouraging Sport and fitness (Junior
Active School Co-ordinators) or supporting Road Safety
(Junior Road Safety Officers) and other leadership roles
as they arise throughout the school year to support them
to become Responsible Citizens and Confident Individuals.
Both schools involve children of all ages in ‘Committees’ to
take ownership of developments in and around their school
which helps develop team work, citizenship skills and a pride
in their school.
Early on in the term all children participated in their Village
Flower Shows and displayed some lovely artwork for all to
see. I enjoyed visiting both Flower Shows and continue to
be very impressed by the gardening and crafting skills of our
communities! Such straight carrots, giant leeks and shiny
potatoes!
Both schools have squeezed in educational trips out of the
Borders already – in Westruther PS the whole school visited
the Scottish Seabird Centre at North Berwick to support their
learning around the water cycle, sustainability and obviously
coastal wildlife. At Channelkirk the P4-7 class visited
Amazonia near Glasgow to support their learning around the
rainforest theme.

2019 comes to an end with a good piece of news from the
Tim Stead Trust.
Tim Stead’s estate has received an archiving award from the
Foundation Art360 and thus Tim Stead is now officially one
of the Leading Scottish artists with a secured place in art
history.
Sir John Leighton, Director General, National Galleries
Scotland gave this statement: “Many artists and their estates
face formidable challenges in preserving their valuable
archives. Art360 is a truly transformational initiative that will
help a diverse range of artists to organise and care for their
archives while also ensuring that these are accessible to be
enjoyed by future generations.”
The programme has received the generous support of
Creative Scotland, the Henry Moore Foundation, the P F
Charitable Trust and National Galleries Scotland.
This is a very important development for the Tim Stead Trust.
The impact on the work of the Trust is indirect: it does not
help financially with the physical securing of the house and
collection and archives. What it does: it raises the profile
of an unrepresented artist on a wider national scale, and
hopefully will encourage hesitant sponsors and donors to
feel confident to support a good cause.
We are pleased to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year!

Lauderdale Historical Society
History covers everybody in Lauderdale!
Your Society has been in existence since 2003.
We have monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of the
month in the Scout Hall opposite the Lauderdale Hotel and
enjoy hearing and discussing a wide range of topics. The
Society covers the whole of Lauderdale including the villages
of Oxton, Blainslie and surrounding areas and membership
or visitation is open to everyone, resident or non-resident.
It is really quite extraordinary the width and depth of local
history knowledge.
Society News
The Society would like to express its deep appreciation to
all of the speakers who gave their time and imparted their
knowledge of their subject matter.
We kicked off the Michaelmas term on the 18th September
2019 when Charlie Robertson covered the history of the
Border Union and Border Show, originally conceived in 1811
as a means of improving farming and livestock in the Borders.
The next talk in the series about farming and rural life will be
on the 19th February given by David Waldie.
On 16th October, Henry Borthwick followed up his original
talk in 2018 with a highly entertaining and informative
presentation in part 2 of The Soutra Plateau. He covered
the east side of the A68 with a wide variety of subjects and
people including Lourie’s Den, Margaret the Witch, The
Herring Way, Midside Maggie, the Dalkeith and Lauder Light
Railway scheme, Cold War Defences, Kate’s Cauldron and
other topics.
On 20th November, John Findlay, Professor of Scots Law at
Glasgow University, gave an interesting and enlightening talk
on Border Lawyers between 1700 and 1850, embracing law
agents as well as advocates and judges. This period covered
times of intense change in Scottish as well as British history.
Forthcoming Events
The Society’s Christmas dinner for members and partners
and friends will be on Wednesday, 4th December at the
Lauderdale Hotel, Lauder.
The Society is open to all so why not become a member?
The Lauderdale Historical Society was delighted to attract a
number of new members during the year and now has over
65 members but we are very keen to attract others either
as additional members or as one-off visitors. You will find a
warm welcome and as well as hearing about topics relevant
to Lauderdale and beyond and there is always tea or coffee
and a biscuit afterwards as well as the opportunity to meet
the speakers.
Families can join for the very reasonable annual fee of £20;
Single Adult £15. Junior member under 17, £15. Senior
citizens and disabled £10. Entry for visitors is only £3 with
tea/coffee and biscuits for £1 which is very good value for
an evening’s entertainment.
If you are interested in becoming a member you can do so
by coming to one of our meetings which are held on the
third Wednesday of the month in the Scout Hall, Lauder or
by getting in touch with the Secretary, Mike Scott, on 01578
722974 or by email at hausscott@btinternet.com or with the
Treasurer, Elma Middlemiss, on 01578 750223.
Finally, we would like to thank the Lauderdale Scouts for the
continuing use of their much refurbished and now much
more comfortable Scout Hall.

Lauder Footpath Upgrade
The Lauder Paths Group have been doing excellent work
upgrading and improving footpaths in our area.
SBC tries to help out where it can, and it was as a result
of representation by the Paths Group at a Community
Council meeting that saw the path which runs behind
Thirlestane Drive to the Piggery Field upgraded. The
work to upgrade the path was carried out by the Criminal
Justice team and community offenders and the materials
were paid for by SBC.
The Paths Group have once again made a suggestion
to improve paths in the Burn Mill. The plan shows the
network of paths in red which are going to be upgraded.
The upgrade will involve wooden edging with Type 1
materials being laid, and once again the work will be
done by Criminal Justice and community offenders with
SBC paying the cost of the materials.
As yet, we don’t have a start date for the work and
the path upgrades often take some time because it
depends how many community offenders are available.
The total cost of the materials is £6,700 but if these
works were to be paid for and delivered by a contractor,
the upgrade would be considerably more expensive.
Thanks to Lauder Paths Group for highlighting this
scheme.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Our first meeting of the year was held in September.
President Liz Dalgliesh welcomed everyone at the start
of the new season and introduced Sharon Cairns from
Lucky Finds, Earlston. Sharon’s topic this evening was
upcycled furniture, some of which she had on display
and she explained in detail the procedure to change their
appearance and produce a new look. She also showed us
a beautifully hand crocheted scarf she had made. After a
quick Q& A, Hostess, President Liz gave the vote of thanks
to Sharon for her interesting talk and for judging the
competition.
Wooden Ornament - 1st Elma Middlemiss (Harley
Davidson motorcycle): 2nd Helen Lumsden (Ducks); 3rd
Wendy Bryson (Birds).
Q: What do you call a line of men waiting for a
haircut?
A: A barberque!
At the November meeting, President Liz Dalgliesh
welcomed everyone before for this evening, before
introducing well known Selkirk lady, Edith Scott. Edith
gave a very interesting, informative and entertaining talk
and Power Point presentation on Kidney transplants. She
is also a great fund raiser for the Kidney Association and
is on various committees. The photo shows Predident Liz
presenting a cheque to Edith on behalf of LauderSWRI.
Hostess, Wendy Bryson gave the vote of thanks to Edith
for her interesting talk and for judging our competition
Beanie Hat - 1st Helen Lumsden; 2nd Christine Brandeschi;
3rd Wendy Bryson.
We then discussed business matter before President and
Secretary, Liz, thanked everyone for coming, providing
raffle prizes and thanked her supportive committee before
closing the meeting.
In October, President Liz Dalgliesh welcomed members to
our October meeting. Sheila Hardie and Annette Holton
had prepared five different “Mocktails” (non alcholic)
drinks. The “Mocktails” were served to each member who
had fun guessing the contents, after which President Liz
handed out recipes for Tropical Fizz; Pineapple and Lime
Mocktail; Mojito Cocktail; Driver’s Punch and Mulled
Apple Juice.
Hostess for the evening, Carol Patterson gave the vote of
thanks.
Thanks also to Alison, Janitor of Lauder Primary School, for
judging our competition.
Tray Bake - 1st Wendy Bryson (Lemon Fudge); 2nd Joanne
Watson (Walnut and Apricot Slice); 3rd Sheila Hardie
(Mixed Tiffin).
Business matters were then dealt with before President
Liz gave the usual thanks to her committee and members.
On a sad note, our President mentioned the passing of
Miss Mary White. Mary attended our meetings regularly
and will be very sadly missed.
The ladies of Lauder S.W.I. have hand knitted 21 hats
which will be given to the Street Pastors in Galashiels, who
will distribute them to people in need on a cold winter’s
night.
President Liz, thanked our members for generously
donating gifts for the Radio Borders Cash for Kids
Christmas Appeal and went on to give her usual thanks
to all concerned for making the evening a great success.
Thanks must also go to Eugene Brandeschi of Lauder
Historical Society for lending and setting up the screen for
this evening’s presentation.
Our next meeting is in Lauder Primary School, on Tuesday,
3rd December at 7.30 p.m. The speaker will be Ron
Campbell, “Jig Bits” - there will be presentation as well as
items for sale. The competition is 3 Mincemeat Pies. All
welcome.

This is Hannah. Hannah
celebrated her 13th birthday
on November 1st and decided
to do something special to
mark becoming a teenager.
In April 2017, Hannah cut
off 13 inches of her hair
and donated it to "The Little
Princess Trust", who make
real hair wigs for children
who lose their hair to cancer
treatments. Hannah also
raised over £1700 through
donations at that time.
So, she decided she'd like to do it again!! On her
13th birthday, she cut off another 12 inches of hair
for the charity, but felt it a bit cheeky to ask people
to donate again. So the selfless teenager sent her
birthday money along with her hair, and also wrote
them a lovely letter.
Next season they will continue to play on Mondays but
will tee off at 10.30am
Hannah was delighted to receive back from them a
t-shirt, bag and certificate.
What a lovely gesture. Well done Hannah!
JUNIORS
Monday night coaching had a large increase in numbers
of juniors taking part and was ably organised by our junior

Weigh Greener
A Zero Waste Refill Shop for Lauder
Fed up with unnecessary single use plastic packaging?
Weigh Greener wants to be able to offer you a
solution!
A zero waste refill shop in Lauder would give the local
community and the surrounding areas more choice to
shop packaging free. We plan to sell loose, packaging
free products, offering a waste free refill service on a
range of staples from pasta to shampoo.
As well as reducing waste from packaging Weigh
Greener will help towards tackling the massive global
food waste problem as customers will be able to buy
only what they need. The shop will also stock a range
of eco products such as bamboo toothbrushes and
soap bars.
How does a zero waste shop work?
You simply bring your own containers, or bags to
fill up with whatever products you need and in the
amounts you want.
So you weigh your container, fill it up, re-weigh, label,
and pay.
The amazing response from our recent market
research has been fantastic and overwhelmingly
positive with over 320 surveys completed so far, and
over 98% of respondents saying yes to a refill shop
for Lauder.
We’ve had so many supportive comments indicating
that people are ready to change the way they shop.
Weigh Greener will be a Community Interest Company
meaning that our profits will be reinvested into the
local community, supporting your environmental
projects. We are launching a crowdfunding campaign
to meet the initial set up costs for our zero waste
refill shop.
Wishing our customers
a very Merry Christmas

Our Crowdfunding campaign is all or nothing

your support. Together, we can do it, giving us all an
opportunity to live Weigh Greener!

At the end of September, the Rotary Club once

supported and our thanks to everyone who attended.
Special mention to Sylvia and The Bright Ideas

as very generously donating a patchwork quilt and
a cushion to auction, helping to boost the funds by
a marvellous £123. The total raised on the morning
was a fantastic £780.21 all for this very worthy
cause.
Thank you too to everyone who came along to our

evening a tremendous success, raising over £669 for

identify a dog’s deposit and before you know it you’re
having to scrap your boots off or the kids are coming
in covered.
Scottish Borders Council needs your help to tackle
dog fouling by reporting it to us when you see a
person not collecting their dog’s deposit.
The Community Action Team (CAT team) can consider
serving a fixed penalty notice if you know who the
person is or where they live and are willing to make
a statement saying when and where you witnessed
the fouling occur, along with a brief description of the
dog. We only have seven days from date of offence
to issue a fixed penalty notice fine, so reporting the
fouling quickly is key.
If you don’t know the person who is failing to pick up
after their dog, there are still things we as a Council
can do.
We can arrange to have the area cleansed as long as
it is a public area.
We can have anti-fouling posters erected and stencils
sprayed on the ground. The Council’s Dog Education
Officer can also organise dog poo surveys with the
local community including schools to publicise the
issue and tackle the worst affected areas.
The seasons should not be an excuse for irresponsible
dog owners. It shouldn’t matter rain or shine - always
have your poo bags close by.
Always pick up after your dog or an £80 fine awaits
you.

CORNET, CHRIS PURVES, REFLECTS ON HIS EXPERIENCES THIS YEAR
Wow! What a year this has been so far, I cannot and will not
ever be able to explain the sense of pride and honour I had
when I was selected as Lauder Cornet 2019, to represent the
town and community of the great Royal Burgh of Lauder!
I’ve followed the Common Riding for many years and as
a young boy I always dreamt of being Cornet but I never
believed this dream would come true.
The excitement began on Picking Night, standing behind
the closed door of the Lauderdale Post Office door to then
hearing my name read out and being carried high on the
shoulders of Right and Left hand men, Chris Rodgerson
and Hagen Steele. The speech was concerning me as I have
never liked public speaking, it is a little bit out of my comfort
zone, not being much of a person to read out speeches this
was all new to me, but I knew this was once in a lifetime
opportunity so I decided to take a breath swallow hard
and go for it.
Threepwood Rideout was my first official Lauder Ride, I
had ridden this previously with my sisters and Mum but
cantering up the hill I took a moment and turned to look
back, and it really hit and I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, this
is real - I really am Lauder Cornet!’
Life was completely taken over for the next few months
with the many rideouts and balls in the local towns, being
ably assisted by my Right and Left hand Men Chris and
Hagen. I had been told that I would never have to drive
but strangely enough I seemed to often end up as the
designated driver! Accompanied by Lauder Lass, Zoe Bruce,
I have never dressed up as much or had so many clean
white shirts in my life being used to working on vehicle
recovery or as mechanic at family business, Adam Purves
& Son ltd in Lauder.
I thought it was a long run up to Lauder Common Riding
but attending all other local festivals and Common ridings
gave me an insight to other towns’ festivals. I met so many
people and made lots of friends for life. I have even learned
to dance!
Finally... the big day was here! When I got up in the morning
and looked out I didn’t think the weather looked good as
I live at the top of the hill in Blainslie all I saw was thick
fog, but on arrival in Lauder I was relieved to see it was
clearer there.
It is so difficult to explain all the emotions and excitement:
everyone told me I would be so nervous on the day, and
although when I woke up that morning I felt strangely calm,
when I marched down the street in the morning with the
Excornets and the Selkirk silver band, I felt it was all totally
surreal and I only just managed to hold myself together
when I saw everyone. Being presented with the flag to carry
on horseback I felt such an overwhelming sense of pride
and I just couldn’t stop smiling!
I remember every single second of it, but for a moment
when I was riding up over the hill I was thinking it was like
being in a movie, I had to keep pinching myself - especially
when I was up on the hill and could see the cavalcade of
horses and riders following as well as hundreds of people
following on foot.
Stopping at the Watering Stane, with Excornets and
Lauderdale riders and the many supporters, was amazingand
it was unbelievable to see so many more riders and
spectators rising out of the mist.
On approach to the town I cannot begin to describe how I
felt; I really thought my heart was going to burst with pride.
29
Riding through the town carrying The Royal Burgh of Lauder
Flag supported all the way by Chris and Hagen was very
nerve wracking and at the Memorial, although I held myself
together pretty well, there were many moments that made
me very emotional.
Everyone had told me to take in every minute as it goes by so
fast and so it did... I’d love to relive every minute of it again!
It has been a once in a lifetime privilege and opportunity to
represent The Royal Burgh of Lauder as Lauder Cornet 2019.
The people I met, the whole experience and the way the
whole of Lauder comes together as a town was wonderful.
I cannot thank everyone enough for the amazing support,
guidance and organisation with a special mention going
to the Lauder Excornets Committee, their Chairman Ian
Middlemas and Ian Fallas for answering my daily questions,
all the towns-folk of Lauder and, of course, Zoe Bruce as
Lauder Lass for attending every function with me and also
for managing to surprise us all by riding the Common Riding!
Thanks, too, to Chris and Hagen who helped and pointed
me in the correct direction, most of the time! Friends
for life! Finally, thanks to my parents, sisters Auntie and
Grandparents and my fiancé, Amy, for all their following
and support.
I would like to wish All the Best my friends and everyone
who lives in the Royal Burgh and across Lauderdale - have
a Great Christmas, a Happy New Year and here’s to 2020!

Lauderdale Limpers
Jedburgh Ultra Relay
The Lauderdale Limpers had members in two teams taking part in the Jedburgh Ultra Relay.
Team ‘Reservoir Jogs’ (pic left) included members Calum Stewart, Jamie Entwistle, Mark Sutherland and Leahn Perry.
The team came first overall with a new course record of 4:38:57.
Team ‘Mummy Shark’ (pic right) included Limpers Kyra Tweddle and Jessica Entwistle who were also joined by David
MacPherson and Gavin Tweddle. They completed the 38 miles course in 6:49:17.
First leg of the Borders XC 2019/20 Series: Lauder
Extremely challenging, wet and muddy running conditions were tackled by
runners for the 1st round of the Borders Cross Country series. With glimpses
of the fantastic views of Lauderdale in between showers, the Lauder course
did not disappoint!
With everything you could ask for in a cross country race, runners navigated
tight twisting waterlogged paths before climbing up, high into the countryside
on narrow trails followed by steep slippery descents into the valley. With the
added challenge of extra large water jumps, many found themselves up to
their necks in plunge pools before bracing themselves for the final leg sapping
muddy climb and welcome descent to the finish line.
With 343 runners in total, we had a fantastic turn out for the Lauders XC ‘Tough
Mudder’ experience. Congratulations to Marc Winkinson who lead the Senior
Limper charge finishing 9th overall (00:28:31), and to Chloe Summerfield first
home for the ladies, finishing 00:35:15. Great performances also from our
Junior athletes with Dylan Theedam Parry first home in the M14-15 age group
(13th overall) and Ava Richardson F10-11 age group leading the girls over the
finish line.
Event two in the series took place in Galashiels on Sunday, 17th November.

The Lauderdale News held its AGM in November, and the Committee office bearers remain unchanged -
Lesley J Wilkinson (Chair); Diane Mitchell (Vice Chair); Kate Farnsworth (Treasurer); Alison Macgregor (Editor); Wendy Perry
(Secretary); Committee members - Walter Brotherston; Judi Gunn; Jaqui Miller; Rhona Neil; Jane and Mike O’Neill.
Thanks to all of our committee for their continued support.
Annual Report from the Chair -
‘The Lauderdale News has had another busy year made possible by the hard work and enthusiasm of committee members and
distribution team who all give up their free time to ensure the Lauderdale News continues to be a great source of information for
the people of Lauder and surrounding areas.
Due to the advertising revenue from local businesses, the Lauderdale News’ finances are very healthy and as a result we have
managed to donate money and gifts to various community groups and residents in Lauderdale throughout 2019. However we
mustn’t become complacent and we are always on the look out for new (and existing) businesses to advertise in the Newsletter.
On a personal note I am honoured and proud to be laying the wreath on behalf of the Lauderdale News at the War Memorial on
Remembrance Sunday.
Thank you to each and every member of the Committee for your commitment and I think a special mention must go to Alison and
Wendy who keep us right issue after issue!
We are always looking for new volunteers to help our delivery team. Please get in touch if you can help!’
