FLOODS
Early Tuesday in
Los Alcázares
FLOODS returned to the Mar
Menor region this week, as
some residents are still trying
to get their lives together
after September’s recordbreaking
downpours, and
parts of Los Alcázares town
being under water for the
fourth time in three years.
The fresh storms hit the whole
of Alicante Province and the
Murcia region, but fortunately
the Vega Baja only saw a handful
of roads flooded, with little or
no property damage reported.
The main problems caused by
this week’s deluges were in the
Mar Menor, with around 100 people
evacuated from properties in
Los Alcázares on Tuesday morning,
and motorists stranded in
their cars by flood water around
the San Javier municipality.
Though the flooding was
at the same severity level as
in September, there was still
plenty for emergency services
to deal with.
A dozen trunk roads were
blocked around the Mar Menor,
as over 100 litres of rain per
square metre fell in the early
hours of Tuesday in just three
hours, with some local routes
still closed well into Wednesday
morning.
The Vega Baja region saw
several roads that are usually
flooded during heavy rain once
again having to suffer overnight
between Monday and Tuesday,
most notably in Torrevieja and
on the Orihuela Costa.
The AP-7 tunnel at Pilar de
la Horadada, that was blocked
for days after September’s Gota
Fria, was also hit.
Access though largely returned
to normal as Tuesday
morning progressed, and inland
areas of the Vega Baja saw
no repeat of the September’s
flooding caused by the high
level of the Segura river.
For the Mar Menor though,
amidst criticism in Los Alcázares
that not enough was
done to help residents with
flooded homes.
Tuesday saw Los Alcázares
town centre home owners with
ground floor apartments and
single-floor homes on ten streets
evacuated to a nearby church.
Nearly all of them were able
lunchtime, with shops and businesses
also flooded, with one
businessman describing what
had happened as “a disaster”.
Schools were closed across
the municipality and the weekly
market scrapped.
Mayor Mario Pérez said that
this week’s events meant that
there was “no more room for excuses”,
and repeated the need
to stop muddy flood water pouring
down into the town from
the Rambla de Balsicas.
“This matter has been denounced
30 thousand times by
me and my predecessor”, said
Pérez.
Further north in the San
Javier area, Santiago de la Ribera
suffered the worst with 40
motorists travelling at Tuesday
dawn having to wait for emergency
services to get them out
of their cars.
I often wonder how people get drawn in
by scammers, you hear of it all the time
but how does it happen? How do people
allow it to happen?
I was recently approached by a couple
who were considering investing their
life savings. They had recently sold
their house here in Spain and wanted
a low risk investment which would
provide them with a steady income. In
the past this could have been achieved
by depositing cash with your bank and
getting a reasonable return on your
savings, however with interest rates at an
all-time low, people are being forced to
shop around.
So where do you start on your search for
an investment product? Well my clients
understandably googled ‘safe’, ‘low risk’
investments and were overloaded with
many different options. Not knowing
where to start, they postponed their
research and opted to speak with a
professional who can at least explain in
simple terms how investments work and
what would be most suitable. Days later,
my client was on his laptop checking
his emails when he noticed a ‘low risk’,
‘safe’, ‘capital protected’ advert appear
on the top of his screen. Inquisitively
he clicked on the advert and it took him
through to a professional looking website
where he discovered they had a fixed
interest savings plan which was capital
guaranteed and offered a set 6% return
for the next 5 years with NO FEES! This
is exactly what they were looking for so
they completed the form to receive further
information.
Days later they received a phone call
Finance Feature
provided by...
Are scammers becoming more sophisticated?
from the company who were based in
Malaga where a seemingly professional
adviser gave them confirmation that they
could have guaranteed returns of 33.82%
over 5 years with no risk to their original
capital. In fact he went as far as putting it
in writing to them, illustrating that if they
were to invest £50,000 in 5 years it would
be worth £66,910!! Being sensible they
started to research the company, and this
fixed interest, risk free savings plan. They
were re-assured by the professionalism
of the product, the company boasted that
they were operating in 189 countries
including UK, Spain, Hongkong, Thailand
and many more. Struggling to find
anything negative the couple agreed to
meet with their ‘so-called’ professional
adviser.
Having already made an appointment
to see me prior to this they popped into
the office to see what Chorus could offer
and it wasn’t long before the clients
were telling me all about the ‘risk-free’,
guaranteed returns that they were about
to sign up to, asking whether we had
anything similar.
Straight away I knew this was a scam! As
an independent adviser constantly looking
for the best options for my clients, and as
someone with nearly 10 year’s experience
advising here in Spain, all the alarm bells
began to ring.
As I started to investigate the product
in more detail, it became very clear,
very quickly that this was a completely
unregulated product, the capital guarantee
was about as useful as a chocolate teapot
and all over its literature were the words
‘for professional investors only’ (these
OBSCENE VIEWING
A TORREVIEJA pervert
who downloaded and distributed
obscene material
via a computer and mobile
phone has been given a
two-year-jail sentence by
an Elche court.
No further details about
the man was given except
that he came from the La
Mata area of the city, and
that his prison term was
suspended because it was a
first offence.
He was placed on probation
for three years and
warned that we would go to
by Alex Trelinski
jail if he offended again.
National Police cyber officers
were alerted to his
La Mata home, when they
tracked him accessing disturbing
sexual material involving
young children and
animals amongst a variety
of perverted subjects.
The bonus for police was
that they were also able
arrest other people across
Spain who were watching
and passing on the same obscene
Notes’ which were miss-sold and left
devastating damage to the life savings of
many here on the Costa Blanca as part
of the Continental Wealth scam). This
couple narrowly avoided a scam that could
have swallowed their entire life savings,
and do you know what………. It could
have easily happened. On the surface,
to an untrained eye, this product looked
legitimate, and it was a mixture of luck
and fate that walked them into my office
that day.
I’m sorry to say, but in a world where
central bank interest rates are effectively
0%, it is impossible to guarantee returns.
The idea of a guaranteed, capital protected
5, 6 or 7% is preposterous to anyone who
knows their stuff, and truly understands
our current economic environment.
Yes, there are low risk, highly diversified
investment funds out there that have
consistently achieved growth over many
years, but they are not guaranteed and the
risks need to be properly discussed with
an independent professional to assure
suitability.
My advice is stay clear of the internet
when it comes to shopping for
investments, seek professional advice
and make sure the company and the
products you use are fully regulated and
are appropriate for you. By fully regulated
this means they will be listed with local
regulators here in Spain, and preferably
other trusted regulators like the UK FCA.
Whether it’s a product provider or a ‘socalled’
financial adviser, they are legally
obliged to clearly display their regulatory
details, reference numbers etc on everything
– articles, business cards, emails etc.
Always get a second opinion before you
commit to anything and remember, if it
seems to good to be true, it probably is. If
you are considering any new investment
TIGERS
SPANISH
TREK
RIDDLE OF MISSING BRIT
THE GUARDIA CIVIL have
found no trace of a missing
British man who was
last seen on Saturday November
23rd kayaking out
of Torrevieja marina.
Kenny McPherson’s family
fear that he may have been
carried out to sea by strong
currents and launched social
media appeals for information
on the 62-year-old Aberdeen
man.
The Scots-born offshore
survey engineer flew to the
southern Costa Blanca last
month to spend a few weeks
by Alex Trelinski
at his holiday property in the
Torrevieja area.
His step-daughter,
23-year-old Anna Mitchell
said:- “My mum said he
had kayaked when they had
been abroad with a tutor but
on this particular occasion
he had decided he wanted to
do a bit by himself.”
“He had just bought a kayak
and had been out on the
Friday before he went missing
just down the road from
where he was last seen. We
were unaware he was going
to go out on the Saturday
again.”
Mr McPherson’s neighbours
saw him leave with
the distinctive lime green
kayak early on Saturday
November 23rd, and his car
was was left at Torrevieja
Marina.
“The weather conditions
early in the morning were
good but we were told it got
bad later in the day and the
wind speed picked up around
midday and the sea turned
quite choppy,” Anna added.
FIVE TIGERS have arrived
at their new home in Alicante
Province, after they
were intercepted in a bad
state in a lorry by Polish
border guards.
The animals were en route
to to a Russian zoo after an
arduous journey from Italy.
by Alex Trelinski
They are now based at the
Primadomus Wildlife Refuge
in Villena, which specialises
in helping exotic non-domesticated
animals.
Two Polish zoos gave nine
tigers temporary accommodation,
with experts describing
the animals as “emaciated,
dehydrated, with sunken
eyes, excrement stuck to their
fur, urine burns, in a total
state of stress, and without
the will or desire to live” when
they were first discovered.
Beware the
cherry pickers...
Successful investing is not about cherry-picking the latest
high-flying fund (there are plenty of examples where these
turn out to be over-ripe and over-valued).
Instead it is critical to ensure that your adviser matches
your investment portfolio to your personal appetite for risk
and overall financial planning objectives.
Confirm that they are personally qualified to advise on
both the investment and financial planning elements of
their recommendations.
At Blevins Franks, our first steps are to thoroughly assess
your risk tolerance and characteristics using a combination
of psychometric questions and other methodologies, and
to understand your needs in term of income, future capital
requirements and estate planning.
Only then do we start to construct a diversified portfolio
that is suitably aligned to your particular needs. We spread
the underlying investments across a range of asset types,
geographic zones and underlying investment managers so
that you are not over-exposed to any one area.
Politician dies in hotel fire
by Simon Russell
Teacher
accused
of abuse
THE authorities in Andalusia
have confirmed that
a schoolteacher has been
arrested in the region in
connection to suspected
child abuse charges.
Due to the age of the victim
few details have been released
although it is known
the charges relate to a
by Simon Russell
schoolchild at a school in the
Velez-Malaga municipality.
The local authorities have
opened a separate enquiry
to that of the police as the
abuse took place on municipal
property.
THE sole victim in a fire at
an Ibiza hostel has been
named as Pedro Tesoro,
a 53-year-old Spanish national
and prominent member
of the local Vox political
party.
The fire broke out at the
Hostal Balearic last Thursday
which is located in the
popular tourist town of San
Antonio. Mr Tesoro, the proprietor
of the establishment,
was lying on the floor when
the emergency services arrived.
He was declared dead
at the scene and it is believed
that he may have suffered a
cardiac arrest not directly related
to the fire.
The victim was a member
of the steering committee for
the Ibiza and Formentera
THE court inquiry into the death of
a customer after eating in a prestigious
Valencia restaurant has
found that this was most likely due
to natural causes and not food poisoning
as first suspected.
The 46-year-old had a meal with her
husband and child in Michelin starred
“Riff” back in February. She became
Vox party who expressed their
sadness at the loss in a social
media statement.
There were 30 other people
Michelin “food poisoning” may
have been natural causes
by Simon Russell
in the hostel when the fire
broke out and they were all
evacuated without injury although
at least one person
very ill the same evening at home and
died. Due to her symptoms, at first
food poisoning was suspected, possibly
caused by mushrooms.
The initial ruling in the court this
week was that while the victim may
was treated for a panic attack.
Mr Tesoro helped with the
evacuation and was believed
to have collapsed shortly after.
have had gastroenteritis, the cause of
death was most likely an underlying
medical condition that she may not
even have been aware of. The court
decision can be appealed. Riff was
closed for several weeks while food
inspectors did thorough forensic tests
of the establishment’s kitchens and
other areas.
come to the area on holiday,
when his car travelled
the wrong way down the
The unnamed Brit was
driving a Ford Focus car and
lost his life instantly, after
he smashed head-on into another
vehicle that was on the
correct carriageway.
The incident caused a six
vehicle pile-up, with three people
taken for treatment to San
Javier’s Los Arcos hospital.
It was unclear whether
the dead British national
or whether there was anybody
else in his car.
It was the third death on
the Murcia region´s roads
this year caused by drivers
travelling on the wrong side
of a motorway or dual-carriageway.
10 thousand euros
next week to a regional
group that try to help
people with a variety of
mental problems to live as
fundraising, will handover
to a cheque to the ADIEM
charity during this Tuesday’s
the HAH money coming as a
major boost to ADIEM.
The property has a commu-
Record roam
for tiger
A WILD tiger in India,
which had a radio collar
fitted at birth, has been
tracked as roaming over
more than 1,300 kilometres
(800 miles) in the last
five months.
The mammoth trek –
roughly the equivalent of
walking from Valencia to
Paris – has surprised experts
as the big cats are generally
home bodies.
However, the tiger population
in India has grown
by over a third in just four
years, putting pressure on
the territorial animals.
In this instance it is
thought that the animal was
looking for territory, a mate,
or possibly both.
The male, named simply
C1, was born in Tipeshwar
two years ago, one of three
male cubs.
The males may have been
fighting over the same space
when they matured, prompting
C1’s odyssey which has
so far taken him to Hingoli
by Simon Russell
FRENCH Premier Emmanuel
Macron has been
among the many who
have expressed their horror
and sadness after the
desecration of graves in a
Jewish cemetery near the
city of Strasbourg.
Swastikas and other anti-
Semitic graffiti were sprayed
on over 100 gravestones and
this week Interior Minister
Christophe Castaner visited
the site and condemned the
act.
At the site he said “I want
to say to those who think
they can come here in the
middle of the night and tarnish
the memory of those
who are buried here that
they tarnish the memory of
our French republic.
I want to tell them that we
will not leave them alone,
and all our means will be
mobilized to follow up and
act on this”.
This is seen as part of wider
backlash in France, which
is home to half a million
Jewish people, the largest
such community in Europe.
Earlier this year a similar
incident happened in the Alsace
town of Quatzenheim.
by Simon Russell
where it is though he may
finally have settled down.
There was one incident in
the long walk where a human
was “accidentally injured” after
the tiger stumbled upon
their camp, and some people
in India have concerns about
the danger to humans as
the big cat population keeps
expanding.
There has been a 74% increase
in the reporting of
anti-Semitic acts this year in
France, although partly that
may be down to more willingness
to report such crimes by
minority communities.
President Macron has
promised that his government
will fight what he calls
a scourge.
However, what is widely
regarded as France’s second
most powerful party, Marine
Le Pen’s National Rally, has
been criticised for its supposed
anti-Semitic stance,
particularly among many of
their supporters.
The biggest worry is that
while due to careful management
the tiger population in
India is doing well, their natural
prey, mainly medium to
large mammals, continues to
shrink in number.
A mature tiger needs a
“food bank” of 500 breeding
prey animals to allow it to
survive, worrying some that
they may turn on domestic
animals – or even people.
A WOMAN’S scheme to
fake illness to get a better
seat on a plane had unintended
consequences after
the flight was diverted
and ended up making an
emergency landing.
The unnamed passenger
was flying from Pensacola in
Florida to Miami when she
told the air crew that she was
having breathing troubles.
Her acting skills were
clearly very good as the pilot
took her health issue so
seriously that he took the
decision to reroute the craft
AN American man regarded
as one of the world’s
best free climbers died
after falling hundreds of
metres from a sheer rock
face in Mexico last week.
Brad Gobright, aged 31,
was descending after a successful
climb of El Sendero
Luminoso, regarded as one
of the toughest peaks in the
world.
He was abseiling down the
mountain when the tragedy
by Simon Russell
back to Peniscola, telling the
airport authorities he had an
inflight emergency.
The crew’s suspicions were
first raised after the “sick”
woman refused to leave the
plane after the emergency
Christmas Fayre
Success for the
AFA Alzheimers
WHAT a fabulous turn
out of people for the Marina
Bar Christmas Fair on
Saturday 23rd November.
With a minimum amount
of time to organise and to
make pleas for donations, the
effort was well worth it, raising
a brilliant 1493.56 Euros
for the AFA Alzheimers
Torrevieja.
The last minute influx
of donations that literally
covered the billiard table
ensured that stalls and the
Tombola were well stocked
for the event.
David and Lorraine Whitney
brought their unique
fundraising and organising
skills to the fore and together
with Rita and Dave
Monaghan, and their loyal
bar staff, worked very hard
to ensure the event was a
success.
The Phoenix band played
a variety of well known
Christmas tunes and Santa
himself found time in his
busy schedule to hand out
Chocolate Santa’s to the
throng of excited children,
many who had written their
Christmas wish lists to hand
in to him personally.
A great afternoon with
fabulous raffle, tombola,
stalls, music, name the bear
and of course crowds of loyal
supporters ensured the success
of the event.
Thanks must go to all of
the people who helped and
who donated to this event,.
Their generosity and loyalty
was much appreciated.
The amount raised, together
with the 200 Euros
raised at the recent
totals 1693.56 Euros for this
worthwhile charity.
FRIDAY 6TH DECEMBER 2019 17
Business & Money
Getting your number
AN NIE number is vital if
you spend any time here
in Spain, and that applies
even to people who
spend a limited period in
the country and who own
a property, or want to do
most kinds of important
business including opening
a bank account.
If you want to buy a property
in Spain, you must get an
NIE, and time may be of the
essence, Sun Lawyers can
get it all sorted for you, and
make sure that you have all
the right papers to keep the
process as straight forward
as possible.
Get in touch with us to see
what we can do for you, and
here is a brief guide to the
world of the NIE:-
What is an
NIE?
Its full name is Número de
Identidad de Extranjero,
which translates as ‘Foreigners’
Identification Number’.
All non-Spaniards require an
NIE in order to have a fiscal
identity in Spain.
You will need your unique
NIE number, which will
start with an ‘X’ or ‘Y’ followed
by seven or eight digits
and then a final letter,
to complete any type of financial
transaction or legal
documentation, from buying
a property or car, to starting
a business, being employed,
getting connected to utilities
and filing your Spanish
tax return (which even nonresident
homeowners must
do).
Some banks will ask for
your NIE just to open an
account with them.
Remember that an NIE is
a separate thing to getting a
residencia, which is a different
process altogether. New
arrivals in Spain should
obtain their NIE within 90
days of moving here, whether
or not they are purchasing
property.
Applying in
person
There is nothing stopping
braver people applying for
their NIE themselves, but
for peace of mind, Sun Lawyers
will take you through
everything, which is especially
daunting if you are
new to Spain.
Applications must be made
at any police station that has
an immigration office, or
‘Oficina de Extranjeros’.
You’ll need to submit your
completed NIE application
forms (EX-15) along with
supporting documentation.
You’ll also need to pay the
small application fee (approximately
€10) at a bank
using a Model 790 form,
showing proof of payment at
the police station.
Supporting documents
typically includes your
passport and photocopy of
the main page, a document
(and photocopy) that validates
your reason for getting
an NIE (eg a notarised
letter or deposit contract for
a property) and a passport
photo.
We will make sure that
you have the the right papers,
but in some instances,
you may need to make an
appointment, otherwise you
can simply turn up, but be
prepared to wait.
Once your application is
submitted, you must wait
for your NIE certificate to
be issued, ready for collection
from the police station
or sent by post to an address
in Spain.
Using Sun
Lawyers
In the vast majority of cases,
it really does make sense to
use a legal firm that you can
trust, and that is where Sun
Lawyers are here to help!
Many of our clients ask
for this to be included in the
package of services we provide
them, so that you have
more time to deal with the
property purchase.
It gives you one less thing
to worry about at the start of
your buying journey, helping
to make the whole process
more enjoyable.
Sun Lawyers will ensure
that your application form is
completed properly (in Spanish),
that all the supporting
documentation is in order
and that the fee is paid.
Our local knowledge
means that we know not
only the most convenient police
station to go to, but we
will organise the best time to
go with you.
When your NIE certificate
is ready, we can then collect
it for you in your absence or
make sure that is posted to
one of our offices.
An even more hands-off
option is to grant us powerof-attorney
rights, which
means that Sun Lawyers
can take care of the whole
process in your absence.
The importance
of timescales
It’s not unknown for NIE
certificates to be ready for
collection or posted the same
day as the application was
submitted in parts of Spain,
but Sun Lawyers work on
the basis of a fortnight here
on the Costa Blanca.
For buyers who have committed
to a property purchase,
a delay getting your
NIE can hold up completion,
as your NIE must by law be
on your Escritura (deed).
In addition, not being able
to complete on the agreed
date can also land you with
a financial penalty.
The best option for buyers
right now is to apply for their
NIE as soon as possible, ideally
before you have found a
property you wish to buy.
Even safer, appoint Sun
Lawyers and give us power of
attorney to start the process
as early as possible.
And when you do find your
dream home, Sun Lawyers
could include a clause in
the purchase contract, typically
signed within 30 days
of reserving a property, protecting
you from penalties
if your NIE hasn’t arrived
by the agreed completion
date.
PUIG MEETS UK
AMBASSADOR
VALENCIAN President
Ximo Puig once again
made more soothing noises
to British expats, as he
welcomed the UK ambassador
to Spain, Hugh Elliott
to Valencia City last
week.
It was Elliott´s first official
visit to the Valencian
government since becoming
ambassador in August.
Puig guaranteed the
maximum “cooperation and
collaboration” of his government
to minimise the effects
of Brexit on all people living
in the Valencia region, as
well as businesses, especially
those related to tourism.
“The Valencian Community
has a deep and friendly
relationship with the United
Kingdom”, said Puig who
also pointed out that around
a third of all British expats
in Spain live in the region.
He also stressed that the
local economy was boosted
by Alex Trelinski
by five billion euros of business
with the UK over the
last year.
Puig stated that the UK
had to leave the EU with
an agreement rather than
“crashing out” and added:-
“Britain may stop being a
member of the European
Union, but it will stop being
European.”
The President repeated
his regional government´s
guarantee over healthcare
provision for British residents,
and stated that his
administration had put together
a post-Brexit plan
with measures such as “an
investment of around 11 million
euros to promote the
area as tourist destination
in the UK market”.
Puig went to London on
INCREASING numbers of
are looking to reconnect
with nature and improve
their well-being by creating
an indoor oasis of greenery.
As people in their twenties
and thirties look for a
calmer and more purposedriven
lifestyle, their choice
of houseplants becomes ever
more important to them,
experts say.
And with so many to
choose from, there is no
shortage of options when
it comes to stylish indoor
plants that make people feel
good.
A recent YouGov study
found that on average people
are spending nearly 22
hours a day indoors.
And as a result of being inside
for long periods of time
they are experiencing negative
effects on their mood,
sleep, performance and even
respiratory systems.
Costa Farms’ garden expert
Justin Hancock says:
“Millennials are looking for
plants that look great, and
also make them feel good.”
He points out that there
is a diverse choice of houseplants
from around the globe
that can enhance people’s
surroundings as well as
their well-being.
The Top
Three Plants
Love
POTHOS
Pothos is ideal for houseplant
beginners. It grows
best in medium to high light,
but also tolerates low light.
Hang it in a basket, let it
climb or place it on a window
sill. Choose from tried-andtrue
varieties such as golden
pothos or go with something
new like ‘Manjula’ pothos for
stylish plants with gorgeous
variegation.
IVY
Easy-to-grow ivy adds a
touch of greenery and tranquility
to indoor spaces. It
grows in low light and tolerates
inconsistent watering.
Place in hanging baskets,
allowing it to climb, or let
the vines drape elegantly
over a container on a side
table. Varieties include ‘Lauren’s
Lace’, which has ruffled
leaves that are playfully accented
with golden-yellow
edges.
FITTONIA
Also known as nerve plant,
Fittonia adds a pop of colour
with leaves that have bright
pink, white or red veins. Its
petite size allows for it to be
placed almost anywhere. Fittonia
prefers medium to low
light, but tolerates direct sun
if the light is filtered through
a sheer curtain. All 15 varieties
of Fittonia bring vibrant
colour and peace to homes.

CHRISTMAS lights are no
is now being used in a myriad
of ways to enhance the
style and look of our home
interiors and exteriors.
Illuminations are used to
great effect to create visual
impact and ambience in our
surroundings and to fashion
that stunning Instagram-worthy
perfect picture, not just for
Christmas but all year round.
Festive lighting has come a
very long way from the hazardous
candlelit trees of old
and since the first appearance
of an electric Christmas tree
back in 1882.
Edward H Johnson, the vice
president of Edison’s Electric
Light Company, decorated his
tree with 80 specially made
bulbs that he displayed in the
window of his Fifth Avenue
home in Manhattan, New
York.
At the time, WA Croffut, a
veteran writer for the Detroit
Post and Tribune wrote: “At
the rear of the beautiful parlors,
was a large Christmas
tree presenting a most picturesque
and uncanny aspect.
“It was brilliantly lighted
with...eighty lights in all encased
in these dainty glass
eggs, and about equally divided
between white, red and
blue.... One can hardly imagine
anything prettier.”
Joyti Gohil, lighting expert
at hardware retailer Robert
Dyas, explains: “Festive lighting
has evolved, and we are no
longer confined to a tangled
string of fairy lights wrapped
around the Christmas tree.
The right lighting can literally
transform a room into a magical
setting.
“There is now such a wide
variety of lights to choose from
and with the advent of LED
lighting and advances in lighting
technology generally, it
makes bathing your home in
beautiful light easy, cost-effective
and energy-efficient all at
the same time.”
Trelinski’s
Stars In My
Eyes
NO LAUGHING
MATTER
I can think of a number of so-called
comedians that deserve a rough ride, but
certainly not the amiable Nish Kumar who
was booed off stage after making Brexit
and political jokes at a charity event on
Monday night.
Kumar, who hosts the BBC’s Mash
Report and is a panel show regular, was
performing for free at the Lord’s Taverners
annual charity cricket lunch.
“You are the only audience in my entire
13-year history of performing that have
actually thrown something at me,” Kumar
said, after a bread roll hit the stage.
The event, at London’s Grosvenor House,
was raising money to give vulnerable
children a start in life through sport, but
audience members couldn’t see the funny
side.
Kumar refused to leave the stage after the
boos and a slow hand clap started, and
the show host eventually escorted him off,
after also having a go at the crowd.
Radio 1 DJ and Taverners’ ambassador
Greg James said the behaviour of some
of the crowd was “appalling”, but hey it
could have been worse.
What would have happened if Frankie
Boyle had done a turn?
ELLIE’S
BOOZE
PROP
Singer Ellie Goulding has revealed
she turned to alcohol after struggling
to adjust to life in the spotlight.
“I had to be a fake person to deal with
the surreal situation I was in,” the pop
star said.
“Usually for me it involved alcohol. I
assumed I couldn’t be good enough,
smart, funny, or crazy enough to be
with certain people without it.”
However the double BRIT Award
winner – who performed at the Duke
and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding
reception in 2011 – says she never
had an alcohol problem.
“I wasn’t an alcoholic,” she said. “I
could go months without a drink, too.”
She revealed her marriage to old
Etonian Caspar Jopling in August has
helped calm her emotions.
“When I met Caspar, this anger thing
just went away.”
ROCKETMAN LETS RIP
Sir Elton John isn’t one to mince his words and I loved
his revealing BBC TV interview with Graham Norton
last week, which was the perfect companion to one
of the best movies of 2019, Rocketman. The star made
the headlines earlier this week during his latest
concert in Australia, after he slammed his security for
allegedly manhandling his fans. He’s on his Farewell
Yellow Brick Road tour and was performing on stage
in Perth when he spotted a security man escorting
someone out. Not liking what he was seeing Elton
began an expletive-ridden outburst, labelling them the
C-word as well as ‘morons’ as he told them to ‘f*** off’
and get the woman back into her seat ‘immediately’.
The band had stopped by this stage, with the HBF
Park Stadium audience able to clearly hear Elton’s
anger at the bouncers. Afterwards it was claimed
by a journalist attending the performance that Elton
apologised for his behaviour.
MUST
SEE
MURRAY
If at the start of the decade you’d have said that
tennis star Andy Murray was full of public star
quality, then a quick meeting with the men in
white coats may have been in order.
But a lot has changed on and off the court over
the last half dozen years or so, and especially
the kind of person that he these days when the
cameras are rolling and the microphones are
switched on.
Yes, tennis is pretty much my favourite sport,
and so I may be biased, but the knighted
Scotsman now stars in one of the best TV
documentaries I’ve seen this year.
Resurfacing(streaming on Amazon Prime)
is just a fantastic emotional and gripping
rollercoaster ride of how Murray has fought for
over two years against a hip injury that nearly
destroyed his career.
This two-hour doc will make you smile but
also get you fully caught up in Murray’s
emotions with revelations about his Dunblane
schooldays and how he pretty much called it
quits at the start of this year, before rolling the
dice on a “must succeed” operation.
That op by the way is Certificate-18 stuff to
watch, but the sheer candour of Murray and his
friends and family shines through a bit of mustsee
TV that will appeal to viewers who have
little or no time for any sport, or even the man
himself in the past.
THE ONLY WAY IS MEGAN
Being a professional UK TV celebrity is
a good way to make money, so having
made a bit of a name for herself on The
Only Way is Essex, Megan McKenna
then did Ex On The Beach, Celebrity Big
Brother, Celebs Go Dating and Celebs
on the Farm. I reckon you can pick up
the theme there for the 27-year-old who
said on Saturday that “she’s living her
dream” after being crowned the winner
of ITV’s The X Factor: Celebrity.
She told viewers: “Thank you so much
for everybody that voted for me, I’m
living my dream and I can’t even explain
how excited I am.”
Her winning song was a cover version of
It Must Have Been Love by the Swedish
pop group Roxette.
During the final, Simon Cowell
told Megan the show had been “a
redemption” for her following her time
on The Only Way is Essex.
And if you’ve not had your fill of The X
Factor, then a week-long search to find a
new band starts this Monday on ITV, and
it runs for every night!

Panama City
PANAMA City (or simply
Panama) is the capital
and largest city of
the country of the same
name, located in Central
America and surrounded
by Costa Rica, Columbia,
the Pacific Ocean and the
Caribbean sea.
The country can trace its
routes back beyond the 16th
century when only indigenous
tribes lived there. It
was declared a city in 1519
by a Spanish conquistador
and remained a colony of
Spain before breaking away
to form a part of the Republic
of Columbia, before seceding
in 1903 from this latest
union and becoming independent.
In the years 1904
– 1914, American troops
built that which it is prob-
ably most famous for – the
Panama Canal.
A city with much history,
it was burned to the ground
in 1671, to be rebuilt close
by, however the ruins and
remains of the original city
still remain and form an important
tourist attraction of
the city.
Being strategically situated,
Panama became the
launching point for the exploration
of Peru, and much
of the Inca Gold travelled
through Panama en route
to Spain. With the launch
of the railroad, this brought
closer ties to the United
States and was influential
in the rapid expansion of the
by Yvonne Hollywood,
Worldwide Horizons
city and it’s wealth.
Today, the city is a mix of
modern skyscraper buildings
and hotels in the new
part of the city, and old rustic
colonial style in the old,
the Casco Viejo. Originally
inhabited by the city’s poor,
this area has undergone a
complete transformation and
is now filled with bars, restaurants
and trendy hotels.
Also in this area are the
best places to buy local
souvenirs such as the traditional
cloth called Mola.
Of course, no visit would
be complete without pur-
chasing the quintessential
Panama Hat, however be
warned – the origins of this
hat are from Equador! Made
of a specific tight weave, the
hats manufactured and sold
to passing Gold prospectors
needing protection from the
hot Equadorian sun.
There is lots to see and do
in the City, which you can
use as a base for a holiday,
travelling around the country,
or equally, as the main
resort. In the hotels, there
are plenty of tours and excursions
being offered, such as a
visit to San Blas, one of over
300 islands close to Panama,
with beautiful white sandy
beaches and fabulous opportunities
for snorkelling.
For refreshments, tails and speciality Gin are
cock-
on offer at Pedro Mandinga,
Panama’s first artisan gin
distillery. Mid afternoon this
venue is popular as the heat
rises and the local residents
cool off!
The cuisine in Panama is
heavily influenced by its Caribbean
roots, with a typical
dish consisting of chicken or
seafood with rice, vegetables,
plantain and coconut flavours.
There are many traditional
restaurants to choose
from, with a typical meal costing
around 10 USD. However
for the best prices, look for
where the locals are eating
and avoid those with English
menus, or be prepared to pay
the price!
Of course, one of the main
attractions is the Panama
Canal, a massive engineering
project started by the
French and finished by the
Americans, which created a
massive 82km of waterway
connecting the Pacific and
the Atlantic Oceans. If you
are planning to visit the canal,
try to time it with one
of the many Cruise or cargo
ships are passing through.
You can then see the massive
lock structure and marvel
as the water pressure is
adjusted to allow the ship to
continue en route.
FRIDAY 6TH DECEMBER 2019 23
Fort Lauderdale
There's no better time to drop by
TWENTY-THREE miles of
Atlantic beaches – Hillsboro,
Deerfield, Pompano,
Lauderdale-By-The-Sea,
Fort Lauderdale, Dania,
Hollywood, Hallandale –
each with their own personality
and more than
300 miles of Intracoastal
Waterway and navigable
canals make Greater Fort
Lauderdale the "Venice
of America" and yachting
capital.
In 1986, the city began
a transformation process
that changed Greater Fort
Lauderdale from a springtime
college destination to a
year-round, family-friendly
retreat.
The story of spring break's
history in Fort Lauderdale
dates back to the 1930s – and
its future is continually being
told, retold and refashioned.
Some of the old haunts –
from hotels to bars – are still
open, with proprietors keen
to retell the tales of Spring
Break's heyday in the 60's,
70's and 80's.
Success can be seen in the
calibre of shops, restaurants
and hotels along the beach
front.
Today, visitors include
families and couples, meeting
attendees and international
travellers – and even
a few college students.
The arts and culture scene
in Greater Fort Lauderdale
has blossomed.
Today it includes arts districts,
festivals and a countywide
$100 million art in public
spaces programme.
For those keen on serious
shopping, Greater Fort
Lauderdale takes it very
seriously.
Domestic and international
travellers are known to
visit area shopping centres
and mega-malls and buy
suitcases just to bring home
their new purchases.
The Galleria: accessible by
car or water taxi (from the
nearby Gallery One – a Doubletree
Suites by Hilton),
this mall reflects Greater
Fort Lauderdale's upscale
style.
Sawgrass Mills (and nearby
Ikea): One of the nation's
first mega-outlet malls, Sawgrass
Mills includes retailers
Prada, Michael Kors, Off
Saks, Bloomingdales Outlet,
Coach, Judith Ripka, True
Religion Brand Jeans, TAG
Heuer, Tumi, Tommy Bahama's
Outlet, Giorgio Armani
General Store, Burberry
Outlet and Kate Spade,
among scores of others.
Some hotels run shuttles to
area malls.
The mall's Bags To Go
programme will fetch and
forward shoppers' luggage
to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood
or Miami International
airports.
Las Olas is known as
Greater Fort Lauderdale's
"style mile," lined with
stores and restaurants of all
kinds serving all tastes.
Independently-owned
boutiques feature couture,
jewellery, home décor, art
galleries and specialty gifts.
Florida has become the
third most active gambling
state in the U.S.
Greater Fort Lauderdale
is in many ways the epicentre
of that activity. Pari-mutuel
betting venues and freestanding
casinos combine
the excitement of traditional
table games; slot machines;
horse, dog and harness racing;
jai-alai; simulcasting –
and all the excitement that
comes with them.
The short list found in
Greater Fort Lauderdale
includes the Seminole Hard
Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood,
Gulfstream Park,
the Isle of Capri Casino and
Pompano Park Racing, and
the Mardi Gras Casino and
Poker Room offer casinos,
thoroughbreds, dog racing
and race simulcasting.
Jai-Alai (pronounced "Hi-
Li") at The Casino @ Dania
Beach features the "world's
fastest sport" and a poker
room.
Just off Greater Fort
Lauderdale's 23 miles of
clean, Blue Wave-certified
sands is a three-tiered living
coral reef system and
more than 76 artificial reefs
that have made this one of
Florida's most popular dive
destinations.
Snorkelers can swim a few
hundred feet off shore (remember
your buddy and dive
flag) to reefs that begin at
less 15 feet in depth in places
like Lauderdale-By-The-Sea,
just south of Anglin's Pier
at Commercial Boulevard;
Greene Street, three blocks
north of Hollywood's North
Beach Park; Dr. Von D.
Mizell-Eula Johnson State
Park in Dania Beach; or at
the new Shipwreck Park in
Pompano Beach.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood
International Airport,
is ranked 21st in the US in
total passenger traffic and
13th in domestic origin and
destination passengers –
there are more than 325
departure and 325 arrival
flights a day on 30 airlines.

DROP QUOTES
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms,
in that the goal is for the solver to
uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white
crossword-style grid is set
up for each quote, with a number of
letters “hovering” above each column.
Your task is to “drop” each of those
letters into the appropriate square in
each column, until the entire quote is
revealed. All punctuation (commas,
periods, dashes, etc.) has been
removed. Good luck!
Pets
Don’t leave your pet home
alone over the festive time
ANIMAL experts are urging
people to be #DogKind this
Christmas after a survey
revealed a fifth of owners
believe it’s okay to leave
their dogs alone for over
24 hours.
They are urging people to
be aware of ‘separation anxiety’
and ensure they have
considered appropriate care
for their pets as the busy festive
season approaches.
The RSPCA survey also
revealed that 39 per cent of
dog owners leave their fourlegged
friend home alone for
seven or more hours on an
average day.
The organisation’s #Dog-
Kind campaign manager Daisy
Hopson said: “The festive
season is nearly upon us and
we know that it’s a busy time
of year for most families.
“As people prepare for office
parties, long days out
Christmas shopping and plan
to go away for the holidays,
it’s extremely important that
dog owners consider their
pets too. For those dogs who
are happy being left home
alone, we recommend leaving
them for no more than four
hours at a time.
“If you’re going to be out
more during the festive season,
have you thought about
how to help your dog?
“Perhaps you could ask a
friend or relative to pop in
and give your pet some company?
Or, do you need to hire
a dog walker?
“Perhaps your pet can come
with you when you go away
to visit family? These are really
important questions that
your dog will appreciate you
asking.”
Campaigners say that millions
of dogs could be struggling
to cope when home
alone
Daisy added: “We know
that many dogs form very
strong bonds with their owners
and for some dogs, being
left alone can be extremely
difficult. Unfortunately,
many dogs don’t know how to
cope when their owner isn’t
at home and become unhappy
when left alone.”
Research has also suggested
that 85 per cent of dogs
may suffer from separationrelated
anxiety, feeling frightened,
lonely or sad whenever
their owners head out to work
or pops out for the evening.”
Up to 50 per cent of dogs
don’t show signs that they’re
struggling, the experts say.
They are urging people to
check for hidden signs, such
as pacing or excessive lip licking,
by filming their dog when
they’re out.
Dog welfare expert Dr Samantha
Gaines said: “Some
dogs who suffer when they’re
left home alone may display
quite obvious signs – such as
barking, whining, toileting or
destroying things.
“But others will simply sit
there, suffering in silence,
which means you may not
know if there’s a problem.
“Thankfully, you can help
your dog learn that it’s okay
to be left alone and there are
techniques you can try at
home to help your dog feel
happier when you’re out.
We hope that #DogKind will
highlight this problem and
help owners ensure that their
beloved pet is happy.
“If you’re concerned that
your pet may be displaying
signs of separation related
behaviour then we would
strongly recommend speaking
to your vet or a clinical
animal behaviourist for some
specialist advice tailored to
his or her needs.”

ISLANDS SEE
BIGGEST HIKES
Average prices for both
new build and secondhand
homes in the Balearic
and Canary Islands
grew by 11.3 per cent in
November compared with
the same month last year,
according to Tinsa, one
of the leading real estate
valuation services.
House prices increased by
an average of 3.7 per cent
across Spain as a whole last
month, in line with the yearto-date
increase of 3.8 per
cent.
Only the island territories
have seen an annual average
increase of over 5 per cent in
2019.
Average house prices in
regional capitals and bigger
cities have gone up by 4.6 per
cent and 2.5 per cent respectively
over the past year.
The Mediterranean coast
by Alex Trelinski
on the other hand has seen
a year-on-year rise of only
0.3 per cent, lower than that
seen in smaller towns or
“remaining municipalities”
where prices have risen by
1.3 per cent over the past 12
months.
Compared with figures
published at the end of 2018,
house prices across Spain
have gone up by an average
of 2.4 per cent.
Only the islands, regional
capitals and big cities have
shown above average increases,
with rises of 6.2 per
cent and 3.6 per cent respectively.
Since the house-price lows
registered at the end of the
recession, house prices in
Spain have gone up by an
average of 16.8 per cent, with
bigger leaps in the case of the
Balearic and Canary Islands
(+29.1 per cent), regional
capitals and big cities (+26.8
per cent), the Mediterranean
coast (+15.8 per cent) and
metropolitan areas (+13.6
In all other areas
the rise was much
smaller
(5.5 per cent).
BUYING ON AN
URBANISATION
Living on an urbanisation
or private estate formed of
apartments, houses or villas
is common practice in
Spain, and has a number
of things going for it, especially
if you are looking buy
over here for the first time.
Facilities like swimming
pools, communal gardens and
play areas for the kids, give
you everything you need right
on your doorstep.
It’s also good to keep family
members coming to stay with
you nice and occupied, rather
than having your whole day
mapped out for you.
Most estates have their own
supermarkets and restaurants.
Urbanisation properties
tend to make for a good holiday
home, and even better,
when you’re not there, there
should be plenty of opportunity
to rent it out to other people
looking for a short-term
holiday let. Community spirit
is all too lacking nowadays,
but living on an urbanisation
gives you a chance to make a
group of friends, either of the
same nationality as you or
from around the world.
Things to watch
out for:
While all the legal aspects
of buying a property on a
residential estate are usually
very secure thanks to the fact
that the whole community,
everyone else who has bought
there, are all under the same
contractual obligations.
It is still advisable, as whenever
you buy property, to use
a solicitor rather than doing it
yourself.
In this way, you can ensure
that you don’t get bitten by
any unexpected maintenance
costs all year round for the
communal areas, as these can
raise the total buying price
considerably.
Also, be advised to research
very carefully where exactly
the urbanisation is located if
you are virtually new to the
area.
Check out road links and
public bus services, and of
course visit an urbanisation
yourself, before making any
kind of commitment.
If you are after a finca in a
quiet spot, then that of course
is what some buyers want.
But there are others who
would regard as living on an
urbanisation as the perfect option
for them.
Just do your research carefully.
Good time for
mortgages
READ US ONLINE:
www.weekender.news
Spain is one of the best
countries in Europe to get
a property mortgage, with
many good deals around,
along with low costs and
flexibility.
After the new mortgage
law came into force in June,
buyers are in a better position,
certainly in theory.
Banks now have to pay the
setup costs over a mortgage
including the Actos Juridicos
Documentados(AJD) tax.
In the past, the house purchasers
were in charge of
paying the registration fee,
stamp duty, and the notary
fees, but now the bank assumes
that cost.
On buying a property, the
two things to will have to
shell out for are:-
The valuation fee that the
by Alex Trelinski
bank needs to realize in order
to assess the real value
of the property. That is a
fixed fee of between 300 and
500€.
Arrangement fee, which
varies from bank to bank,
but usually is one to oneand-a-half
per cent.
There are some banks that
are even assuming these two
costs, making it even a better
deal for you (but not all of
them will).
Other factors in play in
getting a good mortgage
deal are Spain’s low interest
rates, which are the lowest
for some three decades, but
on the downside with everything
that has been mentioned,
banks are generally
only financing up to 70 per
cent of a property.
In Spain there are three
main types of mortgages:
variable (adjusted with the
Euribor interest rate), fixed,
and mixed (a combination of
both).
Buy-to-let and interestonly
mortgages are not
available in Spain.
Mortgage terms are usually
from five to 40 years
maximum, and if you are a
non-resident you will be at
the lower end of this range,
as opposed to being a fulltime
resident.
It will take up to a couple
of months to get a mortgage
done and dusted, and you
will be able to enjoy your
property.

New study
highlights
dangers of
the air we
breathe
LIVING within 50 metres
of a major road in may increase
your risk of developing
lung cancer by up to
10 per cent, a shock new
report has revealed.
The worrying study also
says that the levels or roadside
air pollution in busy cities
can stunt children’s lung
growth by up to 14 per cent.
And it comes as a new survey
revealed that two thirds
(71 per cent) of Europeans
think the EU should bring
in tougher measures to improve
air quality.
The report, written by
King’s College, London, has
been released by a coalition
of 15 health and environment
NGOs.
It shows an increased
risk of cardiac arrest, heart
disease, stroke, lung cancer,
bronchitis.
And it is the first time that
such a wide range of health
conditions and cities have
been analysed in one report,
with the research comparing
13 different health outcomes
across 13 cities in the UK
and Poland.
The research focused not
just on hospital admissions
and deaths but also symptoms
such as chest infections.
The report also says that
living near a busy road can
trigger bronchitic symptoms
among children with asthma.
And if pollution was reduced
by one-fifth, there
would be 3,865 fewer cases
of children with bronchitic
FRIDAY 6TH DECEMBER 2019 29
symptoms every year in London
alone.
Andrea Lee, clean air campaigns
and policy manager
at campaign group ClientEarth,
said: “Toxic air puts
an unfair burden on people’s
lives. The good news is that
Health&Lifestyle
solutions are available. But
much more needs to be done.
“If politicians were not already
convinced by the abundant
evidence that air pollution
seriously harms our
health, could this new research
be the tipping point?”
Dr Rob Hughes, senior fellow
at the Clean Air Fund,
described the situation as a
public health crisis.
He added: “Air pollution
makes us, and especially our
children, sick from cradle to
grave, but is often invisible.”
DOCTORS are warning
people to watch out for a
condition called ‘feather
duvet lung’ after revealing
a man developed a sudden
and severe reaction
to his bedding.
The unnamed 43-year-old
was referred to respiratory
specialists after 3 months
of malaise, fatigue and increasing
breathlessness
which affected the simplest
of activities, such as going
from room to room and
walking up the stairs at
home.
His symptoms worsened
to the point where he could
only stand or walk for a few
minutes without feeling as
if he were about to pass out.
He was signed off work and
managed to do little more
than sleep all day.
He was quizzed about possible
triggers for his symptoms:
there was a small
amount of mould in the
bathroom, and he owned a
cat and a dog, but no birds,
so the doctors concluded
that these factors were unlikely
to be responsible.
But he had recently
swapped a synthetic duvet
and pillows for feather filled
bedding, he said.
Blood tests revealed antibodies
to bird feather dust,
and his chest x-ray was consistent
with hypersensitivity
pneumonitis--a condition
in which the air sacs and
airways in the lungs become
severely inflamed as a result
of the body’s exaggerated
immune response to a particular
trigger.
Is your bedding
making you ill?
The man was diagnosed
with feather duvet lung –
which is caused by breathing
in organic dust from the
duck or goose feathers found
in duvets and pillows.
He was given a course of
steroids to quell the inflammation
and told to revert to
synthetic bedding. After 12
months his symptoms had
cleared up and his life had
returned to normal.
The patient was treated
by doctors at Victoria Hospital
in Kirkcaldy and Aberdeen
Royal Infirmary in
Scotland.
And his case was highlighted
in the British Medical
Journal. Its report said:
“This is just one case, and
it’s not known how common
feather duvet lung is, say
the authors, precisely because
it is often missed as
doctors rarely ask patients
about feather bedding.”
It added: “Repeated exposure
to the culprit trigger in
hypersensitivity pneumonitis
can lead to irreversible
scarring of the lung tissue,
so it’s important to identify
this promptly.”

SANTA POLA POLE-AXED
Monte Maintain The Pace At The Top Of The Pile
TEAM:- Carlos (13), Pepe (3), Manuel Sanchez (9), Santos (4), Manu (5), Diego
Ramirez (12), Luis (19), Dario (21), Maccan (23), Gonzalo (22), Andres (24).
SUB’s:- Morante(2), Alfredo (10), Diego (15), Dimitry (20), Nickel Chepov (7)
A brace either side of the break saw off
a spirited display from a decent Santa
Pola XI last Sunday and top scorer GON-
ZALO (22) showed he also has finishing
skills from the spot in his locker, but
also his dark side too.
Santa Pola started the encounter much
the better team and, surprise surprise,
opened the scoring with a few minutes gone
when a loose ball (yet again!) wasn’t cleared
in the box allowing the striker to prod home
(yet again!). When will Monte stop giving
these daft early goals away?
Balance, however, was restored a few
minutes later when a trademark LUIS (19)
slide-rule pass sprang the offside trap allowing
MACCAN (23) to coolly finish. At
last, Monte were up and awake.
Monte then moved in front when an inexplicable
hand ball in the box gifted them a
penalty. Up strode GONZALO (22) with an
audacious chip over the prone keeper that
just stayed under the bar. Breathtaking
stuff for the 50+ travelling support.
Monte went in for the half-time orange
much deserved of their lead.
Any lingering hopes of yet another Monte
defending freebie for Santa Pola were
dashed at the start of the half, when apparent
confusion over a penalty appeal saw a
statuesque home defence allow MANU (5)
to cheekily flick home.
It was pretty much all Monte from that
The 2019 – 2020 swimming
season has got off to
a fantastic start for members
of the CN Torrevieja
Masters swimming team.
The Masters team has recently
been re-established
with the first three swimmers
participating in the first two
competitions of the season. Already
6 national records have
been smashed by Beryl Altabas
in the 75+ age category.
In the season’s first competition
on 10th November,
held in the 25m pool, Monte
Tossal, Alicante 381 swimmers
from 15 of the regions
clubs competed across a
range of races. Beryl Altabas
started with a new record
in the 100m Individual
Medley event with a time of
2:03:24. She quickly followed
this with a second record in
the 200m freestyle event,
point on, although the home side tried to
mount attacks they were easily repelled by
a combination of stout defence and alert
keeping.
Monte went further in front when a
marauding MACCAN (23) was ruthlessly
hacked down in the area allowing GONZA-
LO (22) to complete his brace, smashing the
ball home this time.
There followed a series of forced/unforced
Monte substitutions that disturbed the previous
equilibrium and allowed Santa Pola
back into the game and with 10 minutes to
go, a direct free-kick, out wide left, slipped
by everybody, giving the home team a glimmer
of hope.
The game closed out with a collection
of bizarre and unnecessary refereeing decisions
that ultimately ended with a distraught
Gonzalo (22) getting his marching
orders, presumably for dissent.
He’ll now miss an indeterminate number
of games. His presence and goals will be
missed.
Despite the numerical disadvantage,
Monte more than saw the game comfortably
out, but the dark spectre of accumulated
yellows now hangs over a squad that
must continue to pull together in the same
direction if they are to beat off their challengers
and win promotion. Vamos Monte.
running out the eventual winner
The 50m Butterfly record
for the 75+ female category
had stood since 2006 but
Beryl knocked 3 seconds
off the record with a time
of 1:00:04 and continued to
follow this with a further
record in the 800m freestyle
knocking 1:30 of the previous
record set last year with
a time of 15:29:40 and will
also achieve a further record
in the 200m freestyle for her
time split from this race.
EAR OPEN
England will face Austria and Romania
in June during their pretournament
training camp for Euro
2020.
Gareth Southgate’s side will play
Austria in Vienna on Tuesday June
2nd prior to hosting Romania five
days later at a venue yet to be decided.
Those games have been added to a
match against Denmark at Wembley
on March 31st.
The FA said an opponent for a game
at Wembley on Friday March 27th will
“be confirmed in due course”.
In Saturday´s draw, England were
put with Croatia, the Czech Republic
and a play-off winner from Scotland,
Norway, Serbia and Israel in their
Euro 2020 group.
The tournament starts on June
12th.
Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino says he is
“open to listen to projects” in Europe as he plans a return
to management.
The 47-year-old spent five-and-a-half years in charge of
Spurs before being sacked last month and replaced by Jose
Mourinho.
“There are a lot of clubs and attractive projects for me to
take on,” Pochettino told Fox Sports Argentina.
“It is my intention to return to manage in Europe.”
He added: “But now I need to be calm for a few days and
see what happens.”
He has returned to his native Argentina following his exit
from Spurs and has been linked with Arsenal and Bayern
Munich.
Arsenal have Freddie Ljundberg in charge after Unai
Emery´s sacking on Friday, while Bayern have Hansi Flick
in interim charge following their dismissal of Niko Kovac.
Captain Joe Root
says he is proud of
the way England
“learned lessons
quickly” in their Test
series defeat in New
Zealand.
Beaten by an innings
and 65 runs in
the first Test, England
established a firstinnings
lead of 101 before
the second Test in
Hamilton was drawn
on Tuesday.
Root made 226 and
opener Rory Burns
101 in England’s 476.
“I feel like we’re a
more rounded team for
being out here,” Root,
28, told the BBC.
England end the
year without a Test
series victory for the
first time since 1999,
and have won only two
of their past 11 away
series.
They next travel
to South Africa for a
four-Test series which
begins on Boxing Day.

PULLING NO
PUNCHES
La Liga president Javier
Tebas resigned from his
post on Monday in a move
to boost his position in a
re-election.
Tebas, 57, has been in
charge since 2013, when he
replaced Jose Luis Astiazaran,
with his existing mandate
due to run until October
2020.
“I have decided to resign
from my role as president so
that a new electoral process
by Alex Trelinski
starts, which I plan to run
in,” Tabas said.
“I hope to gain support to
stay four more years.”
Tebas, who previously
stood down in 2016 before
being elected unopposed,
explained his decision by
saying elections in October
would be too close to the
launch of new tenders for La
Liga’s audiovisual rights.
BRITAIN’S Anthony Joshua
will go for revenge in
Saudi Arabia this Saturday
night(10.00pm) as he
looks to regain the three
heavyweight belts that he
lost in a shock defeat to
Andy Ruiz Jr in June.
Joshua told the BBC that
he chose to “reinvent” himself
after defeat to the outsider
and and feels “different” going
into Saturday’s rematch.
The so-called ‘Clash on the
Dunes’ is the highly anticipated
rematch of Joshua’s
shuddering defeat at the
hands of Ruiz in New York,
when he was floored no fewer
than four times before being
waved off in the seventh
round as he steadied himself
against the ropes of his own
corner.
“There is fire in the belly.
There are things I have had
to do to take me to the next
level.
I am confident I can be victorious
and when I am I will
tell everyone of how I went
wrong.”
Joshua is set to pocket the
biggest-ever payday for a
British fighter with a purse
of 75 million euros, but a
second defeat will it tough
for him to return to the top
of the sport.
“Andy is still the same
person. He will come game
and I’ve got to change some
of my bits and bobs”. said the
Brit.
Ruiz Jr. said this week
that all the pressure will
be on dethroned champion
Joshua.
“We’ve got to see where
he’s at because all the pressure
is on him. The pressure
isn’t on me because I
followed my dream, made
my dreams come true,” Ruiz
said in Riyadh.
“Of course I want more
though — I want the legacy
of Andy Ruiz Jr.”
