Recently I sat down with the president ofthe Motor Corps, Bill Trusty, and Oriental BandDirector, John Grumbein to discuss the AnnualHorse Races and how they have contributed tothe good of Rajah Shrine. The conversation wasinteresting and enlightening because I had no idea,nor do I believe many other people know, just howmuch the horse races have benefited our temple.The concept of “armchair” horse races as theywere first called, originated with the Rajah ShrineClowns in 2003. The Motor Corps got involvedsoon thereafter. The felt racetrack and horses weremade by John & Mary Stahr. There were tworaces a year, held in the Multipurpose Room in thewinter and in the Pavilion in August. The Augustraces were complemented by an Ox RoastThe Oriental Band joined the project in 2004.The HorseRaces are a“Big Payout”for RajahShrineIt was the partnership between the Motor Corpand Oriental Band that kicked the horse races intohigh gear. In 2010 the August race was dropped by Sam Ellisand emphasis was put on the single February date.Since then it has been one of the most successfulunit fund-raising projects in Rajah’s history. Here is a list of just some of the items that have been contributed to Rajah Shinedirectly from the money raised in the horse races:- The shed behind the pavilion- The bar in the Banquet Hall- The flat top for the kitchen stove- A large electric cooler in the multipurpose room- ATM Machine- The macadam behind the Banquet Hall- Ice machine in the kitchen- The chandelier above the bar- Beer tap for the pavilion- New shed for the Pote’s Picnic clam supplies- 2 vacuum/sweeper and floor scrubbers- New 16-foot enclosed trailer16 foot trailer purchased in 2017Our thanks go out to both organizations for their outstandingefforts to improve the buildings and grounds of Rajah Shrine.
