Why is it called Boxing Day? 

Boxing Day is named after a British tradition that 

was first mentioned in Samuel Pepys’ diary in 

1663. The servants of the nobility were allowed 

to take the day after Christmas off to visit their 

families. The employers would give each servant 

a box to take home containing gifts, bonuses, and 

sometimes leftover food. Kinda like a yuletide tip!

resulted in 151 fires that 

burned 72,856 hectares within 

our region. 

• There are more than 180 

annual festivals or special 

events within the Columbia- 

Basin Boundary.

part of the State of the Basin 

Initiative that monitors and 

reports on indicators of social, 

economic, cultural and environmental 

well-being in the 

Columbia-Basin Boundary. 

The initiative helps inform 

citizens and organizations

Andrea Superstein 

jazzes Rossland 

Andrea brings her modern take on 

jazz to Rossland this January! ‘Super,’ 

as she is affectionately known, is an 

award-winning vocalist, composer 

and arranger with lots of heart. She 

has a unique approach to songwriting 

and it comes out in her work. 

Her performances showcase powerful 

vocals that exemplify both the 

gentle and the strong, the light and

Andrew John Porter 

1934-2019 

Peacefully and surrounded by his 

loving family, Andrew John Porter 

passed away on December 11, 2019 

in Trail, BC. Andy was born in 

Vancouver, BC. on December 2, 1934 

to parents Mary and Andy. 

Andy grew up in Trail and started his 

career as a butcher working for his 

uncle. He moved to Kaslo in 1956 

where he met the love of his life Betty 

(Aldous). They were married in 1957. 

Andy and Betty owned and operated 

Eric’s Meat Market for 40 years before 

passing the torch to their son Doug. 

After retirement Andy enjoyed doing 

woodworking projects, trips with 

family and watching sports. Andy and 

Betty often made the 4 hour round 

trip from Kaslo to Trail to watch their 

grandsons play hockey or baseball. His 

grandsons were his pride and joy. Andy 

will be remembered for his great sense 

of humour, his love of life, family and 

all the people he met along the way. He 

welcomed everyone to his home and 

would most likely offer them a beer! 

Andy was predeceased by his sister 

Rosemary Christensen, brothers-inlaw 

Charlie Christensen and Charlie 

Klein. 

Left to mourn his loss are his wife 

Betty, son Doug (Denise), daughter 

Holly (Derrick) Bouma; grandsons 

Erik (Morgan), and Luke (Alexa); 

step-granddaughters Jennifer, Shauna 

(Ryan), and Tara (Yoeun); sister-inlaw 

Ruth Klein; nieces and nephews 

Karen (Ed), Rick, Kathy (Andre), Joan 

(Brad), Ron (Deanne) and Jennifer 

(Gary). 

A celebration of life will be held at a 

later date in Kaslo, BC. Eric Toneff of 

Alternatives Funeral and Cremation 

Services has been entrusted with 

arrangements.

Trust CEO looks 

ahead to 2020 

This coming year the Trust is turning 

25. It’s a chance to celebrate all 

that we have been able to accomplish 

together with people and communities. 

It’s also a time to recognize and 

honour those who saw an opportunity 

in 1995 to create this unique, regional 

organization that would support the 

efforts by the people of the Columbia 

Basin to create a legacy of social, 

economic and environmental wellbeing 

in the region most affected by 

the Columbia River Treaty. The focus 

then was on the future and in this 

coming year, we’ll be asking residents 

to look ahead to the next 25 years. 

We are entering the last year of 

our five-year Columbia Basin Management 

Plan. This plan sets out 13 

primary strategic priorities and has 

shaped our programming and initiatives 

since 2016. Last year, we delivered 

a record $62.6 million in benefits 

to our communities through more 

than 70 programs and initiatives supporting 

over 1,750 projects. 

The Trust supports regional priorities 

that enhance our quality of life 

and make this region such a desirable 

place to live. Significant investments 

in affordable housing, creating techenabled 

spaces, broadband, ecosystem 

enhancement and environmental 

education, child care and arts, culture 

and heritage are only a few examples 

of the work we are doing to support 

regional priorities. 

The Trust’s focus as we move into 

2020 is engaging with people in the 

Columbia Basin about their bold and 

innovative ideas for the future of this 

region. We’ve already started some of 

the engagement by speaking with our 

board, staff and advisory committees. 

Starting in the spring, we will be hosting 

conversations in communities 

and online about where people see 

opportunities. 

What will this plan look like? What 

are we hoping to achieve? What can 

we learn from the past that will inform 

how we work in the future? What do 

we want our region to look like five, 

10, 15, even 25 years from now? These 

questions will form the basis of our 

discussions with residents in 2020.

symposia in the fall. For the first time 

we are hosting the events in two locations 

to allow more people to take

Campaign challenges 

stigma 

According to a BC survey conducted 

by Insights West in 2018, 

more than 70% of respondents felt 

people living with dementia experience 

stigma. 

Stigma – which is negative attitudes 

and misconceptions held by 

family, friends and professionals – 

can be a barrier that prevents people 

from seeking out a diagnosis if they 

are beginning to see possible symptoms, 

or it may keep them from 

accessing services. 

This January, residents of Castlegar 

and other West Kootenay communities 

are invited to take part 

in Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, 

a national campaign focused on 

changing the general public’s perceptions 

of what it means to live 

with Alzheimer’s disease and other 

dementias. Changing perceptions is 

key to reducing stigma, which ultimately 

supports people living with 

dementia to stay active and engaged 

in the community. 

The Alzheimer Society of BC connects 

people living with dementia, 

their caregivers and family members

climate talk to Trail 

“The way we see the world shapes 

the way we treat it.” That’s a quote 

from David Suzuki who is coming 

to Trail on May 1, 2020 to speak at 

a public event at the Trail Memorial 

Centre. 

An evening with David Suzuki - 

‘Human impact on our environment’ 

will feature his observations about 

our collective impact on the environment 

and what we need to do to 

address the climate crisis. 

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity 

to hear one of Canada’s most 

respected scientists and environmental 

advocates share his insights 

and experiences in a no-nonsense, 

exciting and enlightening evening, 

in person. There will also be a 

question and answer period after his 

presentation. 

Bill Van Beek is chair of the Lower 

Columbia Community Development 

Team Society (LCCDTS) and their 

sustainability committee is organizing 

Dr. Suzuki’s visit. “The outcome 

we hope to see from this event is help 

with building capacity in our communities 

to be able to address ideas 

of how we can have an impact on the 

climate crisis. This is an opportunity 

to us, for our communities, to take 

the initiative and take steps to build a 

stronger and more resilient economy 

and healthy communities,” he says. 

Suzuki’s theme is the anthropocene, 

the current geological age 

when human activity has been the 

dominant influence on climate and 

the environment. Humanity has 

experienced massive growth and 

change in population, science, technology, 

consumption and economics 

that have endowed us with the power 

to alter the biological, physical and 

chemical properties of the planet. 

Now we have to decide how we 

respond to the climate crisis and how 

we change course again to reduce our 

impact and achieve sustainability.

Distraction: Dangerous, 

Careless, Preventable 

It’s a scene that is far too familiar 

on roads across Canada: a cell phone 

sounds an alert, the driver reaches 

for the phone and in the short time 

it takes to read the screen, a collision 

has occurred. 

Distracted driving is a trend on the 

rise, a dangerous and life-threatening 

behaviour that must be stopped. To 

mark this year’s National Safe Driving 

Week, the Canada Safety Council and 

the Insurance Brokers Association of 

Canada (IBAC) share a crucial message: 

Distraction behind the wheel is 

entirely preventable. Just don’t do it. 

The statistics: Distracted driving 

tatistics are understated because disraction 

isn’t always easy to prove. In 

atal accidents where distraction was 

possible factor, there may not be 

vidence of phone usage or, sadly, a 

iving witness to tell the story. This 

as resulted in a significant undereporting 

of the issue – still, the data 

urrently available reveals staggering 

umbers. 

According to Transport Canada, 

istraction was a contributing factor 

n 21% of fatal collisions and 27% of 

ollisions resulting in serious injury 

n 2016. Comparatively, those numers 

were reported at 16 and 22% 

espectively, in 2006. 

The Canadian Council of Motor 

ransportation Administrators 

CCMTA) provides further context 

o these numbers: 1.7% of fatal colliions 

and 1.9% of collisions resulting 

n serious injury involved electronic 

ommunication devices between 

010–14. While more recent statisics 

are not available, the prevalence 

f mobile devices in today’s society 

akes it a reasonable assumption that 

hese numbers, too, are on the rise. 

And if you’re fortunate enough 

o avoid injury or fatality, you’ll still 

e subject to fines and potentially 

emerit points depending on your 

rovince. 

To further compound the financial 

osts, your auto insurance premiums 

ould sharply increase if you’re found 

o have been operating a vehicle while 

istracted. 

“Insurance is all about risk and disracted 

driving is an extremely risky 

ehavior,” said Peter Braid, Chief 

xecutive Officer of IBAC. “That’s 

hy insurance brokers are partnering 

with the Canada Safety Council to 

raise awareness of the danger and 

encourage drivers to keep their eyes 

on the road. The stakes are high – 

death, injury, property damage, fines 

and rising insurance premiums. 

Whatever the distraction, it’s not 

worth the risk.” 

The challenge: The challenge in 

addressing this issue is cognitive dissonance 

and, where distracted driving 

is concerned, willingly engaging 

in behaviours that are known to contribute 

to the likelihood of collisions. 

Studies in provinces across Canada 

have borne out the same result: a 

majority of drivers understand that 

distracted driving is dangerous and 

illegal; yet, the same respondents 

report using their devices behind the 

wheel anyway. 

“Personal accountability is a major 

component of society’s role in reducing 

distracted driving deaths,” said 

Gareth Jones, president of the Canada 

Safety Council. “If you’re in the majority 

of road users who understand the 

risks, you owe it to your family and 

to fellow road users to put the phone 

away and otherwise minimize distractions. 

It’s a choice that each of us 

has completely within our control. 

Building a culture of safe driving happens 

one person and one decision at a 

time, so let’s choose well.” 

Other types of distraction: While 

the topic of distracted driving is often 

discussed in the context of texting and 

calling behind the wheel, other forms 

of distraction exist and can also be 

harmful. Distracted driving is characterized 

as any action that removes 

your focus from the road. This can 

include eating, adjusting music, heat 

or GPS, applying makeup and interacting 

with passengers in the vehicle. 

Tips to avoid distraction behind the 

wheel: 

• Put your phone on silent or 

on Do Not Disturb mode. You 

won’t be tempted by an alert 

you don’t hear. 

• Even better, use an app or a 

built-in function that activates 

a Do Not Disturb feature 

automatically when connected 

to your vehicle’s Bluetooth 

or when increased speed is 

detected. 

• Out of sight, out of mind – put 

your phone in a glove compartment, 

a zipped purse or 

knapsack, or even the back 

seat. 

• Make sure to leave enough 

time in your schedule to eat 

and groom before getting in 

the car. 

• Ensure that your temperature, 

music and GPS are set before 

you leave. 

• If it’s really that important, pull 

over. 

Above all else, remember that driving 

is a potentially deadly task that 

requires your full attention. You 

wouldn’t take a call while operating 

a bulldozer; why do the same with 

a vehicle capable of going at much 

higher speeds?

Light Up the Hospital!

perform cardiac ultrasounds. 

A cardiac ultrasound, or echocardiogram, 

is a painless test which 

uses sound waves to provide detailed 

images of the valves, muscles and 

chambers of the heart to aid in diagnosis, 

treatment and follow up in patients 

with suspected or known heart disease. 

Echocardiograms are one of the 

most widely used diagnostic tests in 

cardiology and are essential to early 

diagnosis of cardiac issues. There are 

currently approximately 95 echocardiograms 

performed every month at 

Kootenay Lake Hospital and the wait 

list for this test is up to four months. 

The addition of another cardiac ultrasound 

machine will allow us to perform 

more than twice the number of 

echocardiograms, reducing the wait 

time for this essential test. 

KLH’s Internal Medicine Specialist, 

Dr. Brandon Tuvel says, “Your generous 

donation will help patients in need 

of cardiac care to be assessed and diagnosed 

earlier, ultimately leading to the 

best possible outcomes.” 

Any funds raised in excess of our 

goal will be directed to the purchase of 

other priority medical equipment for
