A Taste of Flavor
Atlantic Avenue Area
Happy Hour Guide
by Ralph Johnson
During their visit, James and Teressa elected to venture out
and explore the nearby Atlantic Avenue in search of gourmet
food and drink. What they found couldn’t have been
more of a surprise and delight, a tremendous selection of worldclass
cuisine establishments, all within walking distance. Teressa
came across the Atlantic Ave Magazine while wandering the strip
and began to review dining tips from the publication.
James’ mother, Betty, suggested they look for reciprocal timeshare
resorts in Delray. During the hunt, they discovered their favorite,
Berkshire by the Sea Resort, a beautiful place just across the
street from the beach and still in walking distance to the Atlantic
Avenue restaurants. Betty traded her own time share points in
2013 & 2014 for all three of them to stay there together.
After consulting with the Berkshire Resort Manager Marianne
Lund, the Woodwards purchased two consecutive weeks in late October
and arrived for their first ownership stay in 2015. It was a
very bittersweet trip for them because Betty Woodward, who was
entirely responsible for leading them to the moment, had passed
away just two months before in August after battling breast cancer.
Since their previous stay at the Marriott in 2009, James & Teressa
had befriended the hotel’s Chef Concierge, Patricia Ozborn and regularly
shared restaurant tips every year. While visiting with her in
2017, she found out that they were published cookbook and wine
guide authors and said, “You guys have been to more places and
know more about the restaurants and bars here than we do, why
don’t you write a comprehensive happy hour guide?” After contemplating
the enormous undertaking, they decided to take up the task.
During their two-week stay in October of 2018, the Woodwards
began the challenge of attending over 50 establishments and documenting
all of their operational information while purchasing and
Oklahomans James and Teressa Woodward
discovered Delray Beach in 2009 while
shopping for a “boot camp” location to celebrate
her 50th birthday. She located one on-line at the
Delray outlet, Vita Vie Retreat operating through
the Marriott on Ocean and Atlantic Avenue.
taking photographs of the happy hour food items. When finally completed
a year later in 2019, they also created a color version in an
electronic “flipbook” form available to view on a personal computer
monitor, tablet or even on a smart phone. The Berkshire board members
were so pleased with the efforts their owners had made, they
insisted upon printing hard copies for all of the resort’s rooms.
The Woodwards created the extensive guide all at their own expense
and did not reveal anything about the project to any of the
establishments during the process. They consider Delray a second
home “Foodies” dream vacation and will update the publication
during their future visits. When asked if someone were to complain
about anything with their Atlantic Avenue Area Happy Hour Guide,
James replies with a wink and says, “They can have their money
back.” To access “A Taste of Flavor” Atlantic Avenue Happy Hour
