High-Rise EdiblesVisit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.comWhatever the size of your plot,you can get more from it withhigh-rise gardening, with potentialin hanging baskets, wall troughsand window boxes as homes forvegetables, herbs and even fruit.So, what does it take to succeed?Larger containers allow for moreroom for your crops’ roots andeasier maintenance, as they willrun out of moisture and fertiliserless frequently, though obviouslyyou will have to balance this withthe space available.Use suitable supporting bracketsand screws for hanging baskets,window boxes and wall troughs,as they must support the weightof fully grown plants laden withcrops, which will be heavier afterwatering. Check walls, balconiesand windows sills will not beoverloaded, leading potentiallyto structural damage or injury topassing people. Consider usinglighter-weight composts, such asthose not including loam or thereadily available peat-free options,and lightweight containers madeof bamboo, plastics or fibre glass.Plant in high-rise planters arereliant on you for food, so usegood quality compost and feedcrops regularly throughout thegrowing period. In a lofty positionthe plants will also be moresusceptible to drying out, soregular and thorough watering isa must.If space is short and you want togrow runner beans, the dwarfrunner bean ‘Hestia’ with prettyred and white flowers is perfectfor containers. The seeds can besown directly into the compostin April, or raised in small potsor trays and then planted outinto the high-rise planter. DwarfFrench varieties do well in a goodsized window box – try ‘Duel’, orthe purple-podded ‘Purple TeePee’.Wall baskets, troughs andhanging baskets can play host tostrawberries. These plants trailnaturally so will obligingly hangover the container edges. Theplants can be bought from gardencentres or by mail order at thistime of year.Forget the idea that lettuce isjust a green, leafy addition to aboring salad – there are hugeselections of lettuce and othersalad leaves available in a widerange of colours and leaf shapes,making them a lot more attractivethan many ornamental plants!Pinks, purples, yellows and severalshades of green, they’re a fastgerminatingand fast-growingcrop and you can either buy smallplants or sow the seed directlyinto the compost yourself. Tryready-mixed seed selections orchoose your own favourites.If you like fresh herbs with yourmeals then herbs in a basket,trough or window box are a must.There are creeping or trailingforms of many herbs, and thymein particular lends itself to life in acontainer in a sunny spot. You canusually get thyme plants at mosttimes of year and, as it is hardy,you can plant it out straight away.Parsley, sage, tarragon, chives andbasil all look good in wall basketsor window boxes and thrive in asunny spot.Most of the oriental vegetables,such as the pak choi varieties‘Red Choi’ and Mizuna will doreally well in a window box or walltrough in a sheltered spot. Youcould combine the two and enjoythe really stunning finely dividedfoliage of the Mizuna positionedaround the edges of the containerwhere it will tend to ‘flop’ slightlyand make the container look allthe more attractive. There’s evena prettily purple-veined Mizunacalled ‘Mizuna Purple’. For a redand spicy theme you could alsouse ‘Mustard Red Giant’.Who can resist the taste of sunripened,fresh, juicy tomatoespicked sun-warmed and straightfrom the plant? Not me! And thegreat thing is there are severalvarieties which are particularlywell-suited to growing incontainers such as hangingbaskets. The classic for this is‘Tumbling Tom’, available in bothred and yellow varieties, and thered-fruited ‘Tumbler’. You couldraise your own from seed sownat this time of year or buy plantsready to pop into the containersin late April or May. If you like tinyfruited tomatoes, then there’s‘Hundreds and Thousands’. Othervarieties that have a bushy habitcan be grown in this way but thecascading varieties are best.Pack a window box or wall troughfull of chilli pepper plants such as‘Super Chilli’ and it’ll look stunningwhen the plants are coveredwith their red, yellow or orangeglossy fruits. Then you’ll be ableto add some fire to your food inthe months to come.
