Every year more than 40,000
children in the UK are left
with a brain injury as a result
of an illness or accident. Many
children make a good recovery, but
thousands have to live with ongoing,
long-term difficulties.
Not only do the children require
specialist medical attention and
rehabilitation, but the families also need
a huge amount of support. This is where
The Children’s Trust comes in – the
charity delivers rehabilitation, education
and community services to children and
young people, as well as their families, at
this extremely difficult time, and Viking is
proud to offer its support.
WHAT THE CHARITY DOES
Last year, The Children’s Trust supported
over 1200 children and their families,
both at its rehabilitation centre in
Tadworth, Surrey – the largest unit of
its kind in the country – and through its
Brain Injury Community Service.
The charity supports each child by
tailoring a rehabilitation programme
to suit their individual needs and
with a variety of different specialist
therapies, including physiotherapy,
occupational therapy, speech and
language therapy and music therapy.
The ultimate aim is for all children
with a brain injury and neurodisability
to have the opportunity to live the
best life possible.
FUNDRAISING EFFORTS
The Children’s Trust needs to raise £7m
each year to support children and families.
THE CHILDREN’S TRUST AIMS TO:
• Maximise each child’s potential
• Restore lost skills if possible,
develop alternative skills and
provide compensatory aids
• Facilitate new learning beyond
the end of the child’s natural
recovery period
• Develop an understanding of
the child’s needs
• Ensure the child’s environment
at home is modified for the way
they will function after their
brain injury
• Prevent secondary problems
from developing
To hit its fundraising targets,
the charity runs a wide range of events
throughout the year. These include a
Rhythm & Grooves Ball and Fireworks
Night and an annual Christmas concert.
Two other events for 2020 are the Spring
Golf Day in May and The Children’s
Trust Supercar Event at Goodwood Motor
Circuit taking place in late July.
The Children’s Trust is also always on
the lookout for keen runners, cyclists and
golfers to participate in sporting events,
such as the Virgin London Marathon
and Ride London 100, as well as general
fundraisers and volunteers.
Viking has carried out a number of
fundraising activities throughout the year
to support The Children’s Trust, including
an office dress-down day and donating
cruises as auction prizes, and the charity
is delighted
it has been
selected to be
one of Viking’s
charities of
the year.
