Happy New Year!!
2019 has been an eventful year for the
Kaslo Senior Citizens’ Association. Our
membership has been actively meeting every
Friday morning for lively discussion, coffee
and tasty goodies.
On September 21st we hosted a Seniors’ Fall
Celebration dinner, which was a great success
and had 125 senior citizens from Kaslo and Area D in attendance.
At that event we also launched our “Let Us Hear & See – Our
Living Legacy” website. Major sponsors included the Community
Foundation of North Kootenay Lake Society, Columbia Power,
Kootenay Savings Community Foundation and the Regional District
of Central Kootenay – Area D. Beautiful door prizes were provided
by contributions from individuals and generous Kaslo businesses.
Our membership has experienced constant growth and we have been
happy to welcome new members again this year. It is also very nice
to see so many of our regular members renew their membership. We
are truly grateful for the volunteer support we have received from so
many individuals.
Thanks to the Village of Kaslo, we now have a new bingo game, which
has been tested by some of our members. We will be hosting some
fun and game afternoons in the new year.
This year our Annual General Meeting and Election of Officers
will take place on Tuesday, February 4th at 1:00 pm following our
monthly luncheon. Nominations for all positions can be forwarded in
writing to our nominations committee members Elizabeth Brandrick
or Andy Shadrack, no later than Friday, February 28th.
We appreciate the many successes we have experienced in 2019 and
look forward to another wonderful year in 2020!

Austin Tremblay was born in Nelson BC and
lives in Meadow Creek. He spent his childhood
summers in Creston with his grandparents.
Austin started working at Front St Market at
the end of grade 7, just one week before May
Days ! He has had many different roles at the
store starting with meat room clean up, bakery
breakout, cashiering and is currently in the
bakery/deli. He says he likes the customers and his coworkers best about his job here.
In his free time Austin enjoys dirt biking, driving and hanging out with his friends.
He is skilled in wood and metal work and is learning about beekeeping. He has also
been a committed volunteer golf instructor for youth going on 4 years now!
Austin enjoys learning about his family history and his aboriginal roots. Next year he
plans to attend college. He comes to work with a positive attitude every day,
is agreeable to any task, and is confident to learn anything new.
Everyone loves Austin’s friendly personality and we have really enjoyed
having him here at the store for over 5 years! Thanks, Austin for being such
a fun person to work with!

The Kaslo & District Public Library
is turning 100 this year! To begin the
celebrations, the KDPL Board decided
to eliminate overdue fines!
“Making this policy change aligns
with our vision to provide equal and
inclusive access to resources,” says
Anne Heard, KDPL board chair. “We
encourage everyone in Kaslo & Area D
to get a library card.”
Most items are lent for three weeks
with up to two renewals. If you are
a bit late returning items, we won’t
charge fines. However, items that are
42 days overdue will automatically be
marked lost. If an item is lost or damaged,
a replacement fee is charged.
E-books borrowed simply expire when
due unless renewed.
At least 24% of public libraries in
BC have gone completely fine-free
and 21% are fine–free for specific
user groups. We are excited to join
this movement in our centennial year
and plan to do other fun things to
celebrate. Stay tuned for announcements
and Happy New Year!

Rail Trail winter
fun day
This year the annual Winter Day on
the Slocan Valley Rail Trail will take
place on Sunday, January 19 from
noon to 2:30 pm at the Winlaw Station.
The crew from the Slocan Valley
Heritage Trail Society (SVHTS)
will once again partner with Slocan
Valley Recreation to offer a fun-filled
afternoon. Volunteers will offer a ski
waxing demo; get your skis waxed
for a $15 donation. Volunteers groom
and track-set the Rail Trail so you can
enjoy a great ski.
Slocan Valley Recreation will bring
along skis and snowshoes for those
needing an introduction to a great
winter pastime. There may also be
individual and group lessons offered
to round out your afternoon experience.
If conditions allow, a track
could be set up around the
Winlaw School field for
some fun races and games.
Of course, everyone is
invited to come out and
explore the Rail Trail and
see what winter has to
offer this year. The swans
have been seen all along
the Slocan River and you
might find a few hanging
around. There’ll be a
bonfire going and refreshments
plus veggie chili
and hot dogs will be sold with proceeds
helping the volunteer group
maintain one of the most popular
recreation resources around. You’ll
be able to find out what’s been happening
on the Rail Trail and what the
future holds in store.
The Winlaw Trailhead can be
reached from Highway 6 in the Slocan
Valley. Watch for the large directional
signs located on the highway.

Pasta’s Up! Research
study concludes
In August 2017 Kaslo Sourdough
announced a research partnership
with the University of Calgary’s Dr.
Jane Shearer. The research project
aimed to compare sourdough pastas
against conventional pastas to see if
there was an impact on blood glucose
response and the human microbiome
or gut bacteria in our intestines.
Kaslo Sourdough is now pleased to
share the results of this research.
Owner and operator Silvio Lettrari
couldn’t be more excited. ‘We are very
happy with the results. Dr. Shearer
was able to ask additional questions
to expand on the two initial ideas and
from data gathered during the study,
including the sequencing of the DNA
from our sourdough culture, we now
have a story to tell from the culture,
the pasta and its passage through the
human body.’
According to Dr. Shearer, “Very
few studies examine fermented products
from their initial cultures to the
product and how it influences the
body. This is an exciting continuum
and has the potential to explain why
fermented products exert specific
health benefits.’
Kaslo Sourdough’s sourdough
starter culture was sequenced to
establish the microorganisms present
in the culture. Subsequently the fermented
sourdough pasta product was
analyzed and compared to conventional
pastas to identify what organisms
are present in each and finally,
the stool of participants were analyzed
to see if there were any noticeable
differences.
Healthy Lactobascilli from the
sourdough pastas can contribute to
a healthy microbiome because they
crowd out other bacteria, some of
which can be harmful to humans.
Lactobascilli may also promote the
growth of good bacteria in the gut
microboime. In this sense, a higher
presence of Lactobascilli is a good
thing. The gut microbiome contains a
variety of different bacteria
and fungi – good
ones and bad ones, and
the proportions of each
fluctuate at different
times. Interestingly, the
results also showed that
the Lactobascilli from
Kaslo Sourdough’s fermented
pastas also “crowded out” the
growth of fungi, so there was lower
fungal diversity in participants after
they had eaten the sourdough pasta.
Overall, the results show that the
Lactobascilli both directly and indirectly
influence the fungal and bacterial
diversity in participants. In
conclusion, a healthy, dominant Lactobascilli
in the digestive tract is associated
with a healthy gut microbiome
and reflect the health-promoting
qualities of sourdough pasta.
Lettrari is very positive about the
results. “Having a healthy microbiome
takes maintenance and it’s
important to eat the right foods that
help support good gut bacteria, and
from what we’re seeing in the results,
our pastas contribute to that,” he said.
Further, he summarized that “The
Lactobacilli bacteria in our sourdough
culture play an important role
in producing the lactic acids that support
the flourishing of good gut bacteria
and that suppress the growth of
other bacteria and fungi – they are a
“police force” to be reckoned with!”

rewarding to be a part of the study
with Dr. Shearer and in the coming
months we’ll be working on figuring
out how we can support the research
publication. We’re also grateful to all
the people who took part in and supported
the study.”
For more detailed results feel free

Next Steps: The results of the study
will be published in an academic
research article that Dr. Shearer is
working on. Academic studies may
take three months to write up, and
a further three to five to publish, but
Kaslo Sourdough will let you know
when it’s finished.

Our dear mom, Lillie Kyler,
passed away peacefully in her
sleep on December 15, 2019
at Pleasant Valley Manor in
Armstrong, BC, three days after
celebrating her 97th birthday.
Christmas dinner in Kaslo
On December 18 the Community
Cares Network organized a community
Christmas dinner in Kaslo for
the second year in a row. Great food,
live music, door prizes and lots of
community spirit made the evening a
huge success. Two hundred and seventeen
people were gathered to share
a meal and a festive atmosphere at the
Kaslo Legion Hall.
The Community Cares Network is
a coalition of North Kootenay Lake
Community Services Society, Kaslo
Senior Citizens Association, Royal
Canadian Legion Auxiliary (Kaslo),
St. Andrew’s United Church, Sacred
Heart Catholic Church and St. Mark’s
Anglican Church.
– Kaslo Food Hub
Mom was born and raised in Sidney, BC,
about one mile away from the present day Swartz Bay
Ferry Terminal. After she married Hershell (known as Pat)
Kyler, they moved Salt Springs Island in 1948 and raised
their children there. In 1975 they moved to Kaslo and lived
here for 6 years, then to Falkland for 10 years and finally to
Armstrong in 1991. She was devoted to her family, loved
watching sports (especially hockey), keeping track of the
weather, playing crib and scrabble, and Christmas.
She was predeceased by her husband Pat in 1993, son
Phillip in 1986, son Rick in 2001 and daughter Dawn
in 2018. She leaves behind her daughter Diane (Ron)
Coutts of Vernon, son Ken of Qualicum Beach, and
daughter Denise (Trevor) Kyler-Funk of Meadow Creek;
11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nieces and
nephews, and extended family.
The family would like to thank the friendly staff at
Abbeyfield House in Armstrong, and the wonderful, caring
staff at Pleasant Valley Manor for the care they gave our
mother for the 22 months she was there.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children’s
Make a Wish Foundations. Arrangements were entrusted
to Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Services of
Armstrong; her service was held in Armstrong, December
30, 2019.

theme
KAST (Kootenay Association
for Science and Technology) has
relaunched the Kootenay Contraption
Contest for 2020, presented in
partnership with FortisBC. The contest
invites students in Kindergarten
to Grade 8 to imagine, design and
illustrate a ‘contraption’ that solves a
problem.
Classes or individuals can participate
by coming up with the most
imaginative responses they can
dream up to solve this year’s challenge:
Create a contraption that
helps improve, solve or raises awareness
in your local community about
an important issue that is related to
climate change.
“We are pleased to relaunch this
fun contest for kids as part of the
KAST Glows program,” says KAST
Executive Director, Cam Whitehead.
“It’s a great way for students
to engage and to get creative about
solving real problems in their communities.
Kids think about problems in unique ways,
which can sometimes be exactly what’s needed to make
progress.”
KAST and program sponsor FortisBC will judge submissions
by grade level for creativity, ingenuity and originality.
Participants can win an educational kit for their
class (KEVA kit or Climate Action kit) and one lucky
individual will win the grand prize of a Lenovo Notebook.
“We’re looking forward to seeing all the submissions
from the creative kids in this community,” said Blair
Weston, community and indigenous relations manager,
FortisBC. “We’re expecting to see some very inspiring
work. Our thanks to KAST for their ongoing work coordinating
opportunities like this.”
To enter, students need to illustrate their idea in the
entry form found at www.kast.com/contraption-contest
Students are encouraged to have fun and be creative by
using anything from art supplies, illustrations, multimedia
and video in their contest submissions.

BC Timber Sales, Kootenay Business Area, hereby gives notice that proposed Amendment #5 to its 2017 to 2022 Forest Stewardship
Plan (FSP) is being made publicly available for review and written comment before it is submitted for approval to the delegated
decision maker for the Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development.
The FSP is a landscape-level plan that identifies how the holder of the plan will be consistent with government objectives for
managing and protecting forest and range values through the results, strategies and measures proposed in the plan. The FSP
guides forest development planning and operations, road construction, timber harvesting and silviculture activities.
FSP Amendment #5 proposes a number of new and amended results, strategies and measures that will apply to BC Timber Sales’
planning, operations, licences and permits within the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District and the Selkirk Natural Resource
District, covering areas of the Boundary, West Kootenay and East Kootenay regions.
A Compendium of Changes document, that summarizes the revisions proposed through Amendment #5 to the currently approved
BC Timber Sales 2017-2022 FSP, will be available for public review and written comments from January 2, 2020 to March 2, 2020,
during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday) at the office address noted below.
