POLICE HAVE identified two
alleged offenders they believe
threw rocks through the windows
of multiple homes in Bishopdale
and Casebrook last year.
Senior Sergeant Roy Appley said
the pair were identified following
inquiries and now a detailed investigation
will follow, once all of
the victims have
been identified.

grown the tallest sunflower in
a flower growing competition.
Kidsfirst Kindergartens Hei
Hei was named the winner
of the “Tallest Sunflower” in
Canterbury with their plant
measuring in at 220cm. A large
13,024 kindergarten children
across 11 regions have been
aiming to grow the tallest
sunflower and widest sunflower
head in their region. Nearly 250
kindergartens nationwide took
part in the competition thanks
to seeds sown by the Daltons
Sunflowers in Kindergartens
Project. In the city 1280 children
from Kidsfirst Kindergartens
were involved in the project.

‘It was a lovely surprise’

Zealand Institute of Registered
Music Teachers and was selected
to be an Associate of the Royal
Academy of Music last year.
Like many dedicated to
serving their community, Mrs
Stott was left “very surprised” to
receive the award.
“It is not anything I ever expected
to happen. It was a lovely
surprise,” she said.
Mrs Stott’s passion for teaching
and playing the piano began
in high school when she began
helping her own piano teacher
with teaching.
“I have just enjoyed it really,”
she said.
As well as taking private lessons,
she taught music at Canterbury
University for 20 years.
When she reached her 80s,
many asked her why she was still
teaching.
“As long as I could do it well,
why would I stop. The children
who came to my home were so
interesting and lovely,” Mrs Stott
said.
It was only in March last year
she retired, due to health issues –
and has been visited by many of
her students since.

2011, earthquake Mrs Stott
helped save the Clef Club,
now known as Music Alive
which provides performance
opportunities for amateur

She was also one of the first
New Zealanders to be appointed
as an international examiner
for the Associated Board of the
Royal Schools of Music in London
in 1991.
“It is quite demanding. You do
need incredible concentration,”
she said.
On her first tour as an examiner
in Hong Kong and Macao,
she recalled assessing 1000
candidates over 12 weeks.
“The adults get more nervous
than the children. I did have an
experience in Hong Kong. A
woman came in and she was so
nervous she couldn’t get past the
first few notes,” Mrs Stott said.
She said while the candidate
“scraped through by the skin of
her teeth” she was pleased she
encouraged her to get through.
Inspiring children

WHEN DAVID Denton first
started up an event aimed at
inspiring children to pursue
fishing – he never thought it
would grow to the success it is
today.
In the 1980s he had been
tasked by a group of influential
New Zealanders including
former Prime Minister Sir Jack
Marshall and long-distance runner
Murray Halberg to set up
an event aimed to get families
outdoors.
Upon receiving the phone call,
the Yaldhurst resident went on
to establish Take a Kid Fishing
– an annual family fishing event
at The Groynes which initially
attracted several hundred people
on its first day in 1988.
Years of dedication to outdoor
recreation and supporting youth
has seen Mr Denton recognised
with a Queen’s Service Medal.
He said it
was “very
special” to
receive the
honour and it

the blue.”

costs “thousands of dollars,” Mr
Denton said.
“We want to keep it free. We
have good equipment, we can
loan them a rod and reel and
good fishermen. It is a very safe
venue,” Mr Denton said.
Since 1988, Mr Denton has
formed many relationships with
sponsors, retailers, clubs and
organisations to ensure the event
remains free.
“That is something I am holding
onto dearly.”
While Take A Kid Fishing
has been a successful event, it is
only one of Mr Denton’s achievements.
In 1988 he also established
the New Zealand Future Fishing
Foundation to get children
involved in fishing.
Mr Denton was the Kids Fishing
Charitable Trust chairman
for 20 years, along with served
as the New Zealand Sports Dealers
Federation president and
executive member of the Sports
Industry Association.
A third-generation fisherman,
his father got him into fishing at
the age of 10 in the south branch
of Waimakariri River.
Since then he has fished for
about 75 years.
Mr Denton said most of the
time his interest is in catching
the fish rather than taking them
home to cook – and will often let
them go.
“Fish were a lot more plentiful
than they are today. I caught the
bug and loved it.”

recruiting hundreds of potential
athletes to represent New
Zealand in the Paralympic
Games has been awarded the
New Zealand Order of Merit.
Sockburn’s Hadleigh Pierson
has been recognised with the
honour after contributing nearly
20 years of service to the parasports
community.
He said it was “very nice” to
receive the award and was lucky
to be in a job he enjoys.
Pierson, 39, has had several
roles at ParaFed Canterbury,
based in Papanui. From 2001 to
2005, he was employed as their
sports co-ordinator and guided
the Canterbury athletes through
the 2004 Summer Paralympic
Games.
He developed programme

while working at Paralympics
New Zealand.
Pierson has played a significant
role in identifying talented
athletes as well as establishing
and maintaining athlete development
squads in the lead-up to
the London 2012 and Rio 2016
Paralympic Games.

Pierson said living with brittle
bones has never affected his life
or his swimming – other than he
uses a wheelchair for mobility.
“I have to be careful and aware
so I don’t put myself in a situation
that gets a fracture,” he said.
Brittle bones is a genetic
disorder characterised by fragile
bones that break easily.
Over his life, Pierson has had
about 30-40 fractures – but he
said that was mostly from when
he was younger and now that
he is older he makes “smarter
decisions.”
“It hasn’t stopped me at all,”
he said.
Getting into swimming was a
natural progression for Pierson,
he started at the age of nine
before competing from 10.
“Swimming naturally happened
– whenever I broke my leg
I would be in swimming to do
rehab,” he said.
In both events, he made the
top eight.
In 1998 he competed in the
World Para Swimming Championships
at the old Queen Elizabeth
II Park placing fifth.
In 2015, Pierson returned to
ParaFed Canterbury as sports
manager.
He said the greatest part of the
role is seeing the achievements
of young people coming through
the sporting ranks.
His goal is to continue
providing more opportunities
for athletes.

Plunge ‘as cold as it was 50 years ago’

FIFTY YEARS after ushering in
the 1970s by jumping into Lake
Wakatipu and blowing his bugle,
Bishopdale’s Robin Bickley
returned to Queenstown to
welcome the new decade in the
same quirky fashion.
After accepting the challenge
from Queenstown mate Lawrence
McSkimming, Mr Bickley,
an MC for the city council’s
monthly citizenship ceremonies,
said: “I tell you what, the water is
as cold as it was 50 years ago.”
“My friends down there put
me up to it. They said come on
it has been 50 years, you need to
celebrate this anniversary,” Mr
Bickley said.
Mr Bickley recalled jumping
off the pier three New Year’s eves
in a row, but he entered the water
more sedately this time.
“There was some trepidation,
after all I am now 75 years old.
But I considered myself fully fit
and accepted it,” he said.
While Mr Bickley entered
the lake alone, he had a “huge”
crowd to cheer him on.
He said it wasn’t taking the
plunge in Lake Wakatipu which
was the attraction – it was being
able to go into the lake playing
the bugle.
Once in the lake, he again
played Reveille on the same wellworn
bugle, with strings hanging
off it, that has accompanied him
almost his whole life.
“It was originally from the
Southland Boys’ High School
brass band or bugle band.”
A lot has happened since Mr
Bickley first jumped into Lake
Wakatipu in 1970.
Born and raised in Riverton,
he went on to study a Bachelor of
Arts at Otago University, before
moving to Christchurch to study
teaching for a year.

His first teaching job was at
Whakatane High School.
In 1969, Mr Bickley travelled
to Canada to teach for one year
before moving to Thailand in
1970.
Initially, he taught English
before becoming a training consultant
for the Thailand Ministry
of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
His role involved helping
Thailand government offices to
design effective training programmes
for their staff members
to work in agriculture development.
In 1991, Mr Bickley, his wife
and two children moved to
Christchurch, where he went on
to work for the city council for
14 years.
He worked as an employment
co-ordinator in human resources
with his role involving advertising
job vacancies, collating job
applications and distributing
documents.
About 20 years ago, Mr Bickley
offered to MC the city council’s
citizenship committees – and
has been in the role ever since.
He now works as a freelance
professional translator and
interpreter.

Events to promote key
dementia message
PEOPLE WITH dementia are
still themselves.
This will be the message
promoted during Dementia
Canterbury’s Walk for Dementia
on February 2 at Nga Puna Wai
Sports Hub.
This is part of the Still Me
campaign, which is aimed at
reducing the stigma associated
with dementia.
An estimated 7500 people in
Canterbury have dementia, and
with an ageing population, this
number is expected to triple by
2050.
A diagnosis of dementia can
bring a sense of relief because it
explains changes in behaviour,
but for many, it creates a fear of
what lies ahead.
Dementia Canterbury manager
Darral Campbell said whatever
the future holds, a person with
dementia is “still me” and can
live well.
Dementia Canterbury is
supporting the nationwide campaign,
co-ordinated by Dementia
New Zealand, with events in
Christchurch and Canterbury
including the Walk for Dementia
next month and a charity golf
tournament on March 6 at
Pegasus Golf and Sports Club.
Both events will raise money to
pay for the free support services
and education programmes offered
by Dementia Canterbury
throughout Canterbury and the
West Coast.
Ms Campbell said contrary
to what many people think,
dementia is not a normal part
of ageing. It affects people of all
cultures, intellectual abilities and
lifestyles, and while it is more
common in people over the age
of 65, it can also affect people as
young as 35.
“The Still Me campaign has
been designed to help change the
way we think, feel and talk about
dementia. It is a reminder that
we need to see the person not the
condition and to recognise the
brave person who is supporting
them,” said Ms Campbell.

Elderly in several
homes targeted

The reports included at least
three elderly people living alone
who had their windows smashed
by the offenders.
One victim, a 94-year-old
woman, was sitting at home
watching television when a rock
smashed through her lounge
window.
She got up to call the
police, and when she was out
of the lounge, a second rock
came flying through the
already broken window.
The woman phoned a neighbour
for help, and not long after
the neighbour arrived, a third
rock was thrown at her kitchen
window, which luckily did not
smash.
Residents living on Highsted,
Veitches and Cavendish Rds
in Bishopdale and Casebrook
reported similar incidents.
Homes on Harewood Rd
and Cotswold Ave were also
targeted.

for national cycle event

High School student Bailey
O’Donnnell will be part of the
national team that will contest
the New Zealand Cycle Classic.
THe 19-year-old had a twomonth
stint racing on the
roads of Belgium last year, an
opportunity organised by former
New Zealand cyclist Hayden
Roulston.
O’Donnell won a 100km race,
often referred to as a kermesse,
in Deinze, west of Flanders in
August.
The five-day race is scheduled
to begin today in the Wairarapa.
There will be 108
riders competing, they represent
18 teams from 12 countries
including Australia, France,
Great Britain, Guam, Japan,
Malaysia, Malta, Moldova,
Netherlands, New Zealand,
Romania and Taiwan.
The event will see riders
complete a total of 668.6km over
five stages.

US training camp goal
for young gymnast

PAYTON Hutchinson’s passion
for gymnastics will hopefully get
her to the United States this year.
The nine-year-old who commutes
to Hornby’s Olympia
Gymnastics Club from Rangiora
four times a week for three-hour
sessions, is looking to raise more
than $3000 to attend an international
camp in Pennsylvania
in June.
The money raised will allow
her to spend two weeks at the
camp, where she would do 20
hours of gymnastics training a
week.
She would be coached by some
of the best international coaches
and will get the chance to meet
some Olympians that also come
to the camp to talk.
Payton’s dream is to represent
New Zealand at the Olympics
and get a scholarship to attend
an American college and then
become a gymnastics coach.
Payton’s mother, Natasha
Huchinson said her daughter
had being doing gymnastics
recreationally since she was four
and had been competing for the
past three years.
Last year, Payton finished
ninth in the South Island for her
age.
“She has a love of the sport,
and she’s had three weeks off
over Christmas and it’s like she
lost a limb,” Ms Hutchinson
said.
“She just can’t wait to get back
into it for the year.’’
The trip will cost $8000 all up
with the hope she will attend
this year or in 2021.
“It’s a great opportunity for
her to go to this summer camp
and improve her skills so it
would be great to get her there,’’
Ms Hutchinson said.

Say hello to haloumi this summer
On the table in under 20min,
this easy vegetarian haloumi
salad is perfect when time
is short
Super Easy Haloumi Salad
Ingredients
250g pearl couscous
500g haloumi sliced
1 Tbsp Moroccan spice mix
2 zucchini, sliced
250g cherry tomato medley,
halved
½ cup fresh parsley leaves
½ cup fresh mint leaves, torn
1 Tbsp tahini
2 Tbsp Greek yoghurt
1 small garlic clove, crushed
1 lemon, rind finely grated, juiced
2 Tbsp pomegranate arils or
1 pomegranate, arils removed
2 pita breads, toasted, torn
Directions
Cook couscous in a saucepan
of boiling water following packet
directions. Drain.
Meanwhile, pat haloumi dry
with paper towel. Sprinkle with
spice mix. Spray a non-stick
frying pan with oil. Heat pan over
medium heat. Cook haloumi
1-2min each side or until golden.
Set aside. Spray pan with oil
again. Cook zucchini 1-2min
until just coloured.
Combine couscous, zucchini,
tomatoes, parsley and mint in a
large bowl. Season well. Combine
tahini, yoghurt, garlic and lemon
rind in a small bowl. Season. Add
lemon juice to taste.
Divide salad among serving
bowls or arrange on a platter. Top

Ingredients
½ fresh pineapple, peeled, cut into
3cm pieces
180ml sweetened coconut cream
60ml unsweetened coconut milk
240ml white rum
2 Tbsp fresh lime juice
60ml dark rum (optional)
Cherries and lime wedges (for
serving)
Directions
Place pineapple pieces in a
resealable plastic bag, laying them
flat. Freeze until solid, at least 3
hours.
Shake coconut cream and
coconut milk in their cans before
measuring. Purée pineapple,
coconut cream, coconut milk,
white rum, lime juice, and
3 cups ice in a blender
until smooth. Transfer
blender cup to freezer
and freeze until mixture
is thickened (it should
be the consistency of a
milkshake), 25-35min.
Blend again until mixture
is the perfect slushy frozen
drink consistency. Divide
among glasses. Top off each
with a drizzle of dark rum, if
using, and garnish each with
a cherry and lime wedge.

Oaklands School
Oaklands School in Halswell is being
transformed, with three new purpose
built blocks and the refurbishment of
remaining buildings.
Last year the redevelopment of the
school began as part of the Canterburywide
school building programme
following the earthquakes.
The first part of the redevelopment
involved a new building linking and
expanding the junior block; a new
administration block; the transformation
of the former office into a dedicated
high-technology hub for Yr 7 and 8
students; and construction of a new
combined library and flexible learning
space.
This year the redevelopment continues
– and will be completed – with the
refurbishment of existing buildings,
including two long brick ‘Canterbury
blocks’ that were built in the 1960s when
the school opened.

now more than half way through the

project, and everyone’s patience was
greatly appreciated, Mrs Trotter said.
The Ministry of Education funded the
‘building’ part of the redevelopment
but a lot of costs, such as playgrounds,
landscaping, furniture, curtains and new
technology items, would be paid for
by the school’s Board of Trustees and
the Parent Teacher Association, Mrs
Trotter said. This community input to the
school’s future was valued, she said.
The redevelopment is scheduled to
finish before the end of 2020.

Six exercises to help Sciatica
Reclining pigeon pose
Pigeon pose is a common yoga pose. It works to open the
hips. There are multiple versions of this stretch. The first
is a starting version known as the reclining pigeon pose.
If you are just starting your treatment, you should try the
reclining pose first.
1. While on your back, bring your right leg up to a right
angle. Clasp both hands behind the thigh, locking your
fingers.
2. Lift your left leg and place your right ankle on top of the
left knee.
3. Hold the position for a moment. This helps stretch
the tiny piriformis muscle, which sometimes becomes
inflamed and presses against the sciatic nerve, causing
pain.
4. Do the same exercise with the other leg. Once you can
do the reclining version without pain, work with your
health care professional on sitting and forward versions
of pigeon pose.

1. Sit on the floor with your legs stretched out straight in
front of you.
2. Bend your right leg, putting your right ankle on top of
the left knee.
3. Lean forward and allow your upper body to reach
toward your thigh.
4. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds. This stretches the glutes and
lower back.
5. Repeat on the other side.
FoRwaRd pigeon pose
1. Kneel on the floor on all fours.
2. Pick up your right leg and move it forward on the
ground in front of your body. Your lower leg should be
on the ground, horizontal to the body. Your right foot
should be in front of your right knee while your right
knee stays to the right.
3. Stretch the left leg out all the way behind you on the
floor, with the top of the foot on the ground and toes
pointing back.
4. Shift your body weight gradually from your arms to
your legs so that your legs are supporting your weight.
Sit up straight with your hands on either side of your
legs.
5. Take a deep breath. While exhaling, lean your upper
body forward over your front leg. Support your weight
with your arms as much as possible.
6. Repeat on the other side.
Knee to opposite shouldeR
This simple stretch helps relieve sciatica pain by loosening
your gluteal and piriformis muscles, which can become
inflamed and press against the sciatic nerve.
1. Lie on your back with your legs extended and your feet
flexed upward.
2. Bend your right leg and clasp your hands around the
knee.
3. Gently pull your right leg across your body toward your
left shoulder. Hold it there for 30 seconds. Remember to
pull your knee only as far as it will comfortably go. You
should feel a relieving stretch in your muscle, not pain.
4. Push your knee so your leg returns to its starting
position.
5. Repeat for a total of three reps, and then switch legs.

Sciatica pain is triggered when vertebrae in the spine
compress. This stretch helps create space in the spine to
relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
1. Sit on the ground with your legs extended straight out
with your feet flexed upward.
2. Bend your right knee and place your foot flat on the
floor on the outside of your opposite knee.
3. Place your left elbow on the outside of your right knee
to help you gently turn your body toward the right.
4. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat three times, then switch
sides.

This stretch can help ease pain and tightness in the
hamstring caused by sciatica.
1. Place your right foot on an elevated surface at or below
your hip level. This could be a chair, ottoman, or step
on a staircase. Flex your foot so your toes and leg are
straight. If your knee tends to hyperextend, keep a slight
bend in it.
2. Bend your body forward slightly toward your foot. The
further you go, the deeper the stretch. Do not push so
far that you feel pain.
3. Release the hip of your raised leg downward as opposed
to lifting it up. If you need help easing your hip down,
loop a yoga strap or long exercise band over your right
thigh and under your left foot.
4. Hold for at least 30 seconds, and then repeat on the
other side.

Be cautious and work with the flexibility of your body. If
you attend a class or watch YouTube videos, those people
have been practicing for a while. Don’t compare yourself
or push yourself. Flow with your body and if you have
kind of pain, you should stop. You can try again at another
time.
